My humble suggestion.. eat the dosas, the idlis or the vadas at location.. when its hot n fresh.. you will love all the condiments that come with it. The coconut chutney, tomato chutney and mint or coriander chutney

Looks like you've been a British curryhouse style place. It's not authentic Indian food at all. It's Indian influenced food adapted for the western palate. I'm from the city of Chennai, previously known as Madras and we have no gravy called Madras. Also, our gravies is more watery and spicy. Looks like the "Madras" is creamy and sweet according to your description. That's a British thing.
