    I really have to question the practicality (and the safety) of trying to jumpstart Picard's heart by sending electric shocks DIRECTLY INTO HIS BRAIN. Imagine putting the defibrillator paddles on someone's face. "Well, his heart is beating again. Both of his eyes exploded though."

    My all time favorite episode of TNG. Rewatched this a few years back when I was feeling down and, no kidding, it's been helping with my depression ever since. I'd recommend even non Star Trek fans to watch this, as it's a great take on appreciating what you have and realizing that no matter where you are in life, at least some good choices brought you there, and it's not all bad.

    From what we know of Picard's history he doesn't sound like he had the background and was the type of person that he would need something like being stabbed in the heart to get his ass in gear.
    Now in an alternate history if Barkley was stabbed in the heart and he was more daring that would be believable and cool.

    • @Noplayster13
      @Noplayster13 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, the show actually contradicts itself on this point. If Picard had never been stabbed, he would never have learned to be cautious. He would have remained a devil may care hotshot his whole career. That’s a far cry from the timid man that he becomes in this episode.
      Honestly, this episode really made no sense.

    • @user-do2ev2hr7h
      @user-do2ev2hr7h 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's just it though, almost everything we know about Picard's history would have been post stabbing.

    • @qam2024
      @qam2024 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@user-do2ev2hr7h We kind of knew. Picard bucked his family and left the farm to join Starfleet. If he were that timid he would just stayed on the farm. Picard also described himself as arrogant and hotheaded during his cadet days. So it doesn't really make sense he would completely change into someone more timid.
      What would have been more realistic, Picard not experiencing being stabbed, never learned to examine all points of view and all options and instead he stayed hotheaded and always acted impulsively and his recklessness ended up causing some tragedy (aka Ensign Ro or Tom Paris).
      So when he returned to the "present", he finds himself either in jail for gross negligence, back at the farm because he was kicked out of Starfleet, or he could still be the Lieutenant we saw, but he never advanced because he is hated and now a broken man over the incident he caused.

      @@qam2024 I think that's kind of the point though. Picard avoiding the fight is so against his nature that it represents a fundamental change in his entire character. (it's also worth keeping in mind that this entire situation is at least arguably some sort of simulation on the part of Q so he may be putting his finger on the scale, so to speak, regarding Picard's alternate present.)

    Q claimed Picard's historical changes wouldn't affect anyone except himself, but for some reason Troi goes back to wearing her flamboyant councilor outfit during Picard's alternate life sequence. This also implies that Captain Jellico never took command of the Enterprise and told her to wear a standard uniform during 'Chain of Command'. 🤔

    Picard waking next to Q is probably the funniest thing ever on Trek. Q: "Morning, darling." *awkward* and "Is there a John Luck Pickard here?" 🤣
    I really like this episode. The Q and Picard banter is, as always, outstanding. Both De Lancie and Stewart pull this off so well, in lesser hands, this might not have worked. I liked knowing a bit more about Picard's back story. A-

    I agree with Nick. It was a good episode. It fleshes out more the idea of Picard having the artificial heart, which, you did not mention, was first brought up in the episode "Samaritan Snare". I do agree it would have been better if they did a Quantum thing, like someone of lesser rank being in charge. But a Quantum thing is done in a later series 7 episode called "Parallels". This episode, "Tapestry" was good. It would have been nice, though, to have heard some of Picard's stories that he was starting to tell at the end.
    A- for me.

    I agree with Nick more think this episode was a good one.
    Of course they are going to do this with Picard, he is the main character. Its important to get to know who he is, and why is he the way he is.
    Its also a message for the audience "Your past makes you who you are today". You cant take out important events from your formative years and be left the same person. We are the sum of our teachings and experiences.
    I also quite like that its certainly possible that the entire episode was about Q saving Picard. Simply being stabbed half an inch in a different direction could be the difference between him surviving beverli's abysmal medical care or not.

    'Felt kinda dragged out' was not something I was expecting to hear when talking about this episode. I enjoyed any chance we got to get into Picard's backstory. This also had character development for Q, turning him from the Hanging Judge in Farpoint to a far more sympathetic character. He's not merely agitating Picard for no reason, he's trying to help humanities growth. I guess that Q decided that Picard dying that day was not good for the future of humanity, so Dr Crusher all of the sudden comes up with a mysterious solution at the end of the episode. Well, I think Q made Picard go from critical to stable, but at least he got to teach him a lesson about regretting mistakes made in youth, which unfortunately gets dragged up again in Picard S2.
    Also, I don't care that Picard just got 'Inner Light', an episode I like a lot less than this one. Stewart was the best actor on the show, of course he's going to get screen-time. You don't see the rest of the crew's IMDB pages showing them in much post TNG. Almost all good TNG episodes revolve around PS in some way with a couple of exceptions. The side characters, honestly, I couldn't care less. Their performances were fine, but they didn't detract from the storyline. Picard is supposed to be older than the crew, so of course you aren't going to see him interacting with a 10 year old Worf or a teen-aged Beverly. I think this is one of the top episodes of the show's run, not the best but top 10 for sure. Solid A to A- for me.

    This makes me wonder how many people in their galaxy are walking around with memories of entirely different timelines. They should have an episode where Picard gets captured and the ship is in trouble, but some rando moisture farmer says he lived an alternate timeline where he was captain and knows how to save the day. Have a B plot where his friend changed timelines with him and used to be married to Troi in the other timeline, but she doesn't know it. The friend regrets leaving her and seems to know everything about her which comes off as creepy as he attempts to woo her in this timeline.

    As always good review! I always like the witty banter.
    Polarizing grades on this one. B- for me...field goal!
    The primary reason for this grade is the same reason for the C+ grade, it seemed too soon for another Picard-centered episode. I think it was done well, but Picard is really carrying a lot of load in this series.
    One of the commentators below made an excellent point; this would have been an excellent plot device for someone like Barclay (or Broccoli as I like to call him), but instead of not doing something, he actually does something out of the ordinary that enhances his future life significantly. I think Dwight Schultz was a good enough actor to pull that off. However, perhaps the Lawnmowerman episode was too much like what a future self-confident Barclay would have looked like. I'm rethinking that now... No, wait, how many Picard-centered episodes have we had? Screw it, it would have been refreshing to have one more Barclay-centered episode.
    Anyway again, good review, good/not great episode.

  • @navyreviewer

    Yeah this episode gave alt Picard a raw deal. Let's be honest. Life is a series of choices. That doesnt make one better than the other. So alternate Picard isnt captain but what IS he? Maybe a world where he got married and became a famous archaeologist? As I pointed out on an another review it's also a bit disingenuous of Riker and Troy to scold him for not taking risks. This is the same Riker that has pasted up (at this point) 3, yes 3, commands. As for Troy despite being a commander (at this point) she still has yet to take the command test. The bigger problem is LT Picard knows everything captain Picard does but hasn't made the mistakes. I dont think it would be hard for him to catch up.

      I dont think it is preachy: the whole episode was an ''what if'' situation, if you had the chance to go back and rectify certain mistakes before happening, would the present you be the same? Our mistakes and experiences define us so changing them would turn us into a different person, that is why Picard would turned out as a different person if he avoided the stabbing heart incident. When Picard looked at his other self he rejected it, he was just comparing to his other self. Not everyone can be Picard, and that is good. Perhaps it is good that we are unable to meet our other self if they were to exists, it would be jarring to compare ourselves with those other versions of ourselves.
