The fucked up thing about this episode is that, in a way, Ensign Sito is sort of "groomed" for this suicide mission by Picard. Holding her past actions over her head, pretending she's up for a "promotion" she's desperate for, telling her he wanted to give her a chance to prove herself etc. It makes my stomach turn a bit, it's what commanders have done to young people since the dawn of war, getting them to go out and kill others and themselves for some abstract personal glory or fulfillment.

When Picard said "secret mission", he meant "svicide mission". Makes a lot of sense though. Send a freshman to a mission that is extremely dangerous, even though she has zero experience. The surprise would be if she survived. Her chances to survive were the same as winning the lottery jackpot. 😀

I totally agree with the the A- rating. This episode gives us insight into how the junior officeers live. We learn they don't have their own cabins. We learn the other staff in 10 Forward are civilians like Guinan. We get to see the senior officers through a window like perspective. At the end, every time I hear Picard announced Sito's death I get that lip quiver. So well done.

Lower Decks the cartoon - I liked it from the start. Minor spoilers follow:
They do referencing, but most of it isn't annoying.
The show reminds me of Futurama. Only warped but in a good way.
They do explore new ideas very well.
There is also drama. If you get used to the characters and character archetypes, there is fun to be had.
There are some plot developments and revelations in later episodes that had my jaw dropping and in a good way.
The show impressed me but some needed a few episodes, and others outright hate it.

I expected to hate Lower Decks just like the two guys in this channel. But I loved the premise enough to give it a chance. I'm not a fan of family guy or futurama. Rick and Morty was decent enough. I enjoy Lower Decks though. There is some low brow humor in it, but we just watch an episode of TNG, and how many others, with space ghosts raping/seducing the bridge crew. I think a lot of Lower Decks comedy comes from normal people's perspective on that stuff. the same reason I find this channel funny is what I find funny about Lower Decks.

I can't see anyone taking that deal except maybe an established and aging producer trying to give a younger relative a boost. Also, as macktheinterloper says above, I'm not even convinced this tale is true rather than a long-standing internet rumor. It's not like Ronald D. Moore is some obscure presence. Ensign Sito is great, the dressing down from Picard is done really well, and it's good she redeems herself (with hinting from Worf) and her death is handled really well (although they should have told her friends before telling the entire ship, poor Nurse Ogowa found out in the middle of examining a patient!)
So Troi and Riker not only evaluate every single crew member, they also do it in public in ten-forward?!

I went in like ya'll thinking it would be Family Guy or Rick and Morty meets Star Trek. I suppose it kind of is, but it's really an animated Star Trek. Most of the comedy comes from the Lower Deck crew having the same perspective as ya'll do. It's like this youtube series. But it's not just a mockery of Star Trek. I think it also deserves respect as its own series. Give it a shot as your next youtube series. The show often references episodes from previous series like TNG. I watched an episode the other day where they visited the two planets where one had the other addicted to drugs.

One thing I liked about this episode was that the issue with Ensign Sito reminds me of a similar incident on Murder She Wrote with a character called Preston Giles. Preston starts out in the first episode (The Murder of Sherlock Holmes) as a publisher, but winds up at the end to be the murderer. He returns for a second episode later in the series and winds up being killed at the end. This episode with Ensign Sito is similar, because she, too, was involved in an incident where someone died and then she showed up in another episode and died at the end.
I give this an A, as well.

This episode takes on a more sinister tone, when you realize Warf Knows Sito will be sent on a suicide mission, and Picard is basically sentencing her to her death, knowing full well the Cardassians won't permit an escape pod to ... escape. Sito should also realize this is a set up, because when the Captain of a Federation Starship says he can not order her to do something, it's because he's protecting himself from the liability of her very likely death. She should have declined the offer to be a 'prisoner'. They could have spared her life by 'injuring' the Cardassian, and setting the damaged shuttle adrift towards Cardassian space, so unconcious, he would be rescued by his people.

Lower Decks got good & especially good at bringing back old canon that the show would often ignore, answering the "what happened?" questions with a lot of actors coming back to reprise their characters. However as it gets closer to Abrams stuff it'll downgrade fast. Picard is built on the aftermath of Abrams, helmed by 2 men who openly despise Star Trek, staffed by actors who needed a paycheck, content to randomly kill off character & now the Enterprise-D is back and... who cares.
Mariner went to the academy at the time of "First Duty" & blamed Nick Locarno for not only ruining the careers of his squadron but also Sito's death. It became personal when Nick shows up again, refusing to accept any personal blame & still claiming Starfleet was unfair, having gathered a bunch of ships to his cause. McNeill had returned as Tom Paris in LD prior & they do once make a comment on how Locarno looks like him.

Lower Decks is comedic, but a lot of the humor is the same sort of self-referential poking fun at Star Trek tropes as you guys do, so you might enjoy it.

I've heard two different things about them, Taurik and Vorik are either fraternal twins or first cousins. But definitely two different characters. Enberg is a talented actor, because upon watching Voyager and then a rewatch of ST:TNG Lower Decks, you realize he did some consistent things that distinguish Vorik from Taurik; change of facial expressions, vocal modulation and pitch... Vorik felt much more like a character that was hiding internal chaos, whereas Taurik felt much more comfortable and in touch with his (controlled) emotions.

I think a great new show would have been one about Ensign Nog. You have a racist instructor at ST Academy assign him to a Garbage Scow for the 1st season. After he turns the crew around Nog is transferred to an Escort Ship for the second season with a whole new cast. And so on up through the ranks and a different ship almost every season. This would have been a real Lower Decks.

Good review. Good episode. I don't see giving this quite an A-/A grade, because we really don't see these types of characters enough (or again) to get a complete view of their development. However, the way they did this was well done. B+.

I think Nurse Ogawa felt out of place in this episode because of her age compared to the other ensigns. She was substantially older than the others and it just didn't seem like she would fit in to that group. It was another weird Star Trek age/rank disparity having a 40-year-old playing a lowest rank officer. Ogawa is older than Geordi and Deanna but still only an ensign?

You should give the Lower Decks cartoon a chance. It's definitely not as bad as I expected. Sure, it's got some very silly plots but it feels like a comedy cartoon made by actual Star Trek fans rather than the new live action shows feeling like Star Trek being made by people who hate Star Trek.
