I'm from China, and I can say that the kumquats here are way better than described in the video. The aroma profile is similar, but it is 100% sweet here and not sour at all. I'd say that it even tastes just as sweet and like marmalade! We have the round kind, and they are green with streaks of orange.
I live in AZ and have two kumquat trees. We eat them, raw, make curd, marmalade, jam, roast them and use in salads, on oatmeal, etc. It can be an acquired taste. The sour is balanced by the sweet peel. Best yet, the tree yields fruit from December and I'm still picking in late April. I love this little beauty.
Bought some kumquats to try this unusual fruit. Had to TH-cam to find out what to do and found this channel. Yes, tart juice then followed by burst of sweetness as you chew the peel. Loved the experience. I will definitely buy these again. Thank you👍🏻🙂
My favorite plant as a kid was the little kumquat tree growing in our Tampa backyard. We used to eat these little guys directly off the tree. I still love them today and find that they are most plentiful (in the Midwest, where I live today) at the Asian markets around the time of the Chinese New Year. I have been told that the golden fruits are reminiscent of gold coins and symbolize good fortune. (I have not verified that, but that's what I heard.)
In China, all citrus fruits are a symbol of good fortune. Decades ago, we used to be told that the first thing to do on CNY day when you wake up is to say your blessings to your grandmother, and they'll give you a piece of mandarin to eat for good luck
I read somewhere says you have to roll the kumquat between two fingers with a bit of a squeeze to soften the skin and to get the nice aroma out before you eat the fruit.
You can definitely do that! I don't do that and I have eaten a ton of them, but yes if you roll them you will loosen it up a bit and release the smell. Hopefully you get to try them sometime.
We have kumquats on our farm in Misiones province, Argentina. We enjoy eating them like you were doing in the video. We also made some marmalade with them. Tasty! We also used them as a filling in a bread roll. We enjoyed your video.
i try the chinese one lately and amazingly the inside also sweet. the skin look thicker and no orange sags inside. it looks round not oval. The skin or peel looks smoother than normal, totally different from regular kumquat i tried all over the world.

Hi Matt. I absolutely love Kumquats! For some, it’s an acquired taste. I love biting into one and tasting that sweet, sour and sometimes a little bitter skin. Definitely one of my favorite fruits.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt just curious how the taste compares to a regular orange marmalade. I guess depending on how much sugar you add they taste similar.
@@karenrom1513 they taste similar for sure, but I think kumquat marmalade is better. :) Probably since the peel is already better/sweeter to begin with. Since you actually eat the kumquat peel raw. But it is made pretty much exactly the same way as Orange marmalade is.
