Yes! There are different varieties, one like this that is green on the outside and pink in the middle and this honey pomelo th-cam.com/video/u_UMWczMrk0/w-d-xo.html
I just tasted one for the first time! A sweet lady at my Air BnB was celebrating the full moon when I arrived, so we had mooncake, pomelo, plum and tangerine. I had never heard of or seen a pomelo until a couple days ago! Really awesome piece of fruit!!
Pomelos are awesome. But we in Southeast Asia cut it in a different way than you did. Im an Indian, and we just sorta peel it like you would peel a potato and get rid of the thick skin on top. Then we go ahead and seperate the teardrops from the white bitter part by hand. That way you won't be wasting any and it will be less messy.

My daughter and I saw some of these in the grocery store here in Houston last night. Hi Alexis! Yes you can eat it that way, that is very similar to the first way I showed. Growing up that is how we ate grapefruit, cut it in half, but then I would cut around it, and through the individual pieces just to make them easier to dig out with a spoon. If you love grapefruit you will love these!

Got my first pomelo I've ever tasted lol and had to search this up! got the rather orange white ish variety and I always think the reddish one tastes better lol
u need to do 5 'skin' deep cut from top to bottom (pomegranate).. and peel the skin off like a banana or like a coconut husk then you will get each segment .. just like a large oranges...and u can enjoy every single pulps.. try it..
@@nicekit unfortunately, this skin and pith (white stuff) is way thicker than an orange and harder to peel off. The ways I show in the video work just fine. :) With that said, it may depend on the ones that you get. Meaning the ones that I buy here may be harder to peel the pith off than other varieties grown and sold around the world.
Pomelo is a difference species and larger than a grapefruit. The grapefruit is a cross breed between a pomelo and an orange variety. But the main difference is the growing location, color and size. If you like grapefruit you will like the pomelo and vice versa. :)
@@inthekitchenwithmatt ooh That's interesting.... unfortunately I have never tried a grapefruit nor have I tried a Grapefruit, I hope to try them someday :) it was just curious, thanks for the information amigo
Ive never had one! But... i have ocd and i have a very picky way of eating citrus by removing all the skin and i love love love the oranges that arent that juicy or sweet which is weird to ppl. But i love the texture of those little vesticles or whatever they're called. The actual little fruit sacks! And i search for the largest almost unripe dry oranges or grapefruits to eat this way. So this seems like the absolute perfect citrus for me bc they tear apart into those perfect little sacs that i love so so much! Omg now i must go get a few!! Thanks for showing how to eat one!
Fla born and raised, but had never heard of them until the local fruit stand in Melrose, Fl said he had them available. Will have to stop and try a couple... Thnx. 😊😎
Awesome, John!! Yeah we grow a ton of Citrus here in Arizona. In fact, Citrus is one of the 5 Cs of Arizona. And I hadn't heard of them until recently. They are pretty awesome! If you like citrus, I think you will like these. :) Let me know how you like them after trying them.
I tasted one today! It taste a little sweet mostly sour because it was a bit unripe the flesh was orange but like a grapefruit and a orange but pretty good!
Thank you for this video. Never seen or heard of them. BJ's has a coupon. Now I'm interested in trying them. 🙂 I'm upstate New York. Too cold to enjoy fresh from the trees. They do look delicious.
You are welcome! Yes please give it a try sometime when you can and let me know if you like it or not. I really like them! There is also a variety called the Honey Pomelo which is yummy too, I have a video for that here: th-cam.com/video/u_UMWczMrk0/w-d-xo.html
Pomelos are amazing, a grapefruit on steroids. Having tried both the "right" preparation (method 2), and the "wrong" way (method 1), hands down method 1 is a much more enjoyable eating experience. It is more tedious to cut along the cell membranes on both sides of each cell (vesicle), and then to score again along the outer edge (especially if you take care not to cut the membranes separating each cell). That modest investment in time pays huge dividends, as you can then use a spoon to very easily extract the juicy and delicious nuggets of fruit almost entirely intact!! Wonderful!
Hi Bill!! I know right, steroids is an understatement. I feel like these could have been used as projectiles instead of rocks for catapults lol. Yeah I always do method 1, that is how I like doing my grapefruit too. I like that it is in its own "bowl" and I can just scoop it out with my spoon and sprinkle a bit of sugar or salt on top. So yummy! Glad you like it that way too!
I usually tackle them the way they do it in SE Asia. The Thai's seem to be able to get the sections out without much pith. I've watched it done. A lot depends on the Pomelo. There, you can buy one sectioned for $1.50. When buying them here, I'm very careful about finding heavy one's with a ripe smell. Otherwise, it's a waste of money and time.
Yeah the heavy ones are the way to go. Those ones in the video were quite nice. They don't have them very often here at my supermarket however, just a few short weeks that they are available. Might have to hit up the Asian Market.
Grapefruit rind minus the peel is fried with chicken spices by Cubans. It tastes like chicken cutlet. This fruit would yield more rind for this recipe.
I bought one of those for the first time today at the grocery store. $2.50 / pound at 3.65 pounds came to almost $10 for one fruit. I haven't tried it yet but they are a little too pricy for my pallet.
Pricy indeed, I think this is the beginning of the season, although the season actually doesn't last that long for these, like it does for lemons and oranges. I wonder if you will see the price go down.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt same, about not having enough info. I hate false information, & some sources say yes, some say no. It's like why is it so hard to find a true answer?
@@nickyricardo7034 Yeah agreed, for some things there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer. But my whole life I haven't eaten any citrus seeds on purpose. I have accidentally swallowed some though haha.
I was at Jewel Osco today and bought one just to try it. However the one I got is a lot smaller. Almost the size of an orange or large apple. But it's squishy. Wish me luck!
I just purchased one of these today 😉. Now I know how to cut it. It looked interesting and I googled the name before buying because this is the first time I seen this fruit at the grocery store.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt So I went back to the grocery store for another Pomelo and some (red) grapefruits. This time they had sweeties/oroblanco. I of course googled before purchasing and decided to purchase a couple. Okay so I only eat the red grapefruit. The regular grapefruits are not my cup of tea AT ALL. Gives me chills or a very weird feeling 😫 when I eat them 😂. The Pomelo was pretty good. Sort of a light sweet taste. Not too sweet, just enough sweetness. The Sweetie was more like the red grapefruit but with a slight sensation (😫) of the regular grapefruit but not too much that I couldn't eat it. So to sum it up I will stick with the red grapefruits and the Pomelo (while in season) 😊. The sweetie didn't provide enough sweetness that I could see choosing that over the (non-hybrid) grapefruit. I will enjoy the ones I purchased though 😂.
I love citrus so much, have just come from watching your video on candied citrus. I buy citrus in larger volumes from a Crowdfarming project, so I have a lot to process while it is at its best. I made a lengthy list of all that I could make with these fruits, but I haven't as yet found someone who supplies pomelo. Sadly, the choice in some of our supermarkets is getting more restricted, I used to see Pomelo and Tangelos in the shops years ago, now I guess they would have to be bought from specialist grocers. I know of a farmer growing them in Corsica, but I am finding varieties of limes and pomelo etc harder to come by. Have you tried using Pectinex to remove the white membrane? If you peel it as far as you can without damaging the membranes, you can soak the fruit in Pectinex which will break down the pith. Thanks Matt.
Yeah, Citrus is so awesome and yummy! Even here it is hard to find Pomelo, the season is so short. Maybe like a couple weeks out of the year I can find them at my supermarket. now I haven't tried Pectinex, that sounds like a cool trick.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt Thanks, I bought a small bottle on Amazon, it used by patissieres in order to strip the fruit segments so that they look perfect on their cakes etc. It is a natural enzyme.
Excellent directions 👍I bought a Pomelo from my supermarket since I'm always looking for non-traditional fruit to increase my daily fruit servings. I didn't find your video until I sectioned it. Not the best way to eat a Pomelo 🙃I will definitely use your 1st method next time 😋
I found both the Pink (Red) & White Pomelos at a Asian Market that was about two blocks from me. I loved both color...and was BLOWN AWAY BY THE AMOUNT OF VITAMIN C ONE POMELO PROVIDED!!! 🤯🤯🤯 HOLY AMAZEBALLS!!! 🤯🤯🤯
I absolutely LOVE Pomelos. I watched another video on how to open one and Option 2 is actually the correct way, but either way, it eats the same. As you said, it's sweeter than a regular grapefruit, and the texture of the fruit reminds me of eating a big navel orange. Those little juicy "teardrops" are amazing! I just wish they didn't have such a short season. Sometimes I can't find any in the area where I live and then I have to wait a year for the next short season. I always say I'm only going to eat half of one, but they are so good I can't leave them alone and the next thing I know, I've eaten the entire pomelo. Nope, no guilt at all. LOL
Yeah Pomelos are awesome! Honestly there isn't really a correct way. However people want to eat them, it doesn't matter, like you mentioned it eats the same. I know right? such a short season. They are so good, I ate each one all at once as well, not half at a time, haha.
@@baomichael If they don't sell them at your local supermarket, try a specialty Asian market, or farmer's market. Or you can probably always buy them online, but they will be more expensive.
3 yrs after ur pomelo video in OH! Just saw first pomelo (yellow ) in my weekly grocery ad. What is that! Can’t wait to try it. Ur video is very informative, easy to follow, good speaking speed. Can’t wait to try. My siblings & I (OH & NYC) stopped buying peaches, pears, most apples & strawberries all of us won’t buy all unless from a local farm or pears (I buy Harry & David for fruend’s birthday; not myself) So tired of wasting money for fruit that’s mealy texture & zero flavor. Also don’t like seedless watermelon cuz 50% of time it’s yuck & mushy frozen like flesh. Bought first melon I found in years at Giant Eagle( supermarket) with old fashioned black seeds & was not disappointed. it! We have local orchard in Kent, Ohio -Beckwiths that takes us back to childhood when it was rare to get any bad fruit. In NEO late July thru Fall check Beckwith’s out. Call ahead for season opening date first!
Hi Annette! Glad you found this video and liked it. Let me know how yours tastes. I love local farmer's markets and International markets that sell fresh fruit, much better than the standard grocery store variety.
I never watched a video on how to peel it just kinda figured it out I did the 2nd way save yourself some time and do it the first way I just ate a yellow one it was a pane in the ars to eat with all of the tiny seeds it tasted like a orange mixed with a little bit of grapefruit but not bitter surprisingly my fruit was clear inside and not crazy sweet but still varry good not as acidic as a orange or grapefruit it was quite pleasant like you can eat a lot and not get tired of it it has so much juice I just wish they made a pomelo juice now that would be amazing
Yeah the first way it how I like to do my grapefuit, have been doing it that way for years and years. You can also like I briefly mention in the end, just use a knife and cut around it, you can do that even with the peel on and cut further in, kind of how you would cut a pineapple. You may have some fruit stuck to each piece, but that is a quicker way to do it as well.
I got one of these for the first time. Without knowing I did method #2 Really good. I only could eat 1/2 so I have the other half for today. They are putzie but really good. I got it in WI at woodmans
Ok I think our pomelos are not.. pomelos... ours are huge but they have a weird hat on top and are yellow inside.. and taste like sweet lemons. They have a very thick peel.. very thick.
There are a variety of pomelos. The one you are referring to, I believe is called a honey pomelo or maybe a different variety. It can be yellow inside. Yes they all will have a very thick peel, like the one I show in the video, the peel is nearly an inch thick in places.
Very similar, although the white part (Pith) is much thicker than a grapefruit. But one of those methods I showed where I cut it in half and then cut around just the fruit part and scoop it out with a spoon is exactly how I eat a grapefruit as well.
hahaha but you are missing the definition of promote. Promote isn't just someone "promoting" a product, etc. It literally means, "further the progress of something, etc." "Promote weight loss" is a very common phrase in the English language. It doesn't have to do with someone speaking.

Hi there, Michael, unfortunately it didn't say at the supermarket, it just gave the name Pomelo, I believe it was a Green Chandler though.
Thank you. I would love to make marmalade? Not quite sure how as it can be very bitter.
I'm from South Africa and sell my jams and marmalade at our kiosk at our retirement complex.
You are welcome! And that is awesome! I don't have a marmalade video, but someday I will make one. You should make candied orange peel as well and sell that :) Here is a video I have on that. th-cam.com/video/Yp4EF9GCUO4/w-d-xo.html
Got my first pomelo I've ever tasted lol and had to search this up! got the rather orange white ish variety and I always think the reddish one tastes better lol
Awesome!! Was it the honey pomelo? I have a video on that as well here th-cam.com/video/u_UMWczMrk0/w-d-xo.html
u need to do 5 'skin' deep cut from top to bottom (pomegranate).. and peel the skin off like a banana or like a coconut husk
then you will get each segment .. just like a large oranges...and u can enjoy every single pulps.. try it..
Yeah you still have the pith around it when you do that. I show that during the second half of the video.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt u just peel the pits
Same like oranges
@@nicekit unfortunately, this skin and pith (white stuff) is way thicker than an orange and harder to peel off. The ways I show in the video work just fine. :) With that said, it may depend on the ones that you get. Meaning the ones that I buy here may be harder to peel the pith off than other varieties grown and sold around the world.
Yeah I do think that's better. That's the traditional way anyway
Is this more better than a lemon or lime?
I think so! :) Lemons and limes are much more sour. These are sweet. :)
@@inthekitchenwithmatt makes total sense.

👋 Hello... someone may tell me what is the difference between a pomelo and a grapefruit?
Pomelo is a difference species and larger than a grapefruit. The grapefruit is a cross breed between a pomelo and an orange variety. But the main difference is the growing location, color and size. If you like grapefruit you will like the pomelo and vice versa. :)
@@inthekitchenwithmatt ooh That's interesting.... unfortunately I have never tried a grapefruit nor have I tried a Grapefruit, I hope to try them someday :) it was just curious, thanks for the information amigo
@@Pol_Olimon You are so very welcome, Paul!
Awesome, you will love these then, if you can find them. :) Let me know how you like it once you try one. :)
I got mine at Publix. They only had 5 for sale and now they only have 4.
grapefruity. 🤔😊
Does a pomelo have seeds?
Sometimes they will have lots of seeds, very few, or none at all.
I tasted one today! It taste a little sweet mostly sour because it was a bit unripe the flesh was orange but like a grapefruit and a orange but pretty good!
@@jamestropicals8262 Nice! Glad you were able to try one.
Just a little unripe but it was more sour but not bitter at all
how do you rate It out of 10?
I would say 7 or 8, maybe even a 9. If you love grapefruit, you will love this!
First attempt. Peeled it like a grapefruit. Delicious 😋
So delicious!
How does the pith taste?
Grapefruit rind minus the peel is fried with chicken spices by Cubans. It tastes like chicken cutlet. This fruit would yield more rind for this recipe.
Nice!
his smile is so cute aw
Thank you! :)
Whose smile...Fruit or presenter..?
yes
I bought one of those for the first time today at the grocery store. $2.50 / pound at 3.65 pounds came to almost $10 for one fruit. I haven't tried it yet but they are a little too pricy for my pallet.
Pricy indeed, I think this is the beginning of the season, although the season actually doesn't last that long for these, like it does for lemons and oranges. I wonder if you will see the price go down.
I paid $3.78 last night
I don’t find the white bitter at all
Great!
Are pomelo seeds edible?
I haven't found enough information saying they are safe or not to eat, so I personally wouldn't eat the seeds.
Cool!
I just purchased one of these today 😉. Now I know how to cut it. It looked interesting and I googled the name before buying because this is the first time I seen this fruit at the grocery store.
That is awesome, Shania! I am glad you are trying it. I love them!
@@shaniaday2739 Awesome! So many different things to try, haha. I need to see if there are some Pomelo being sold here right now. So yummy!
Hi I'm drinking a pomelo and pink pepper tonic. And it's SO good. Take care and all the best. 👍👍👍👍
Awesome! Thank you!
@@voxintenebris6367 Very cool!!
You should get your hands on some chat masala with pomela! That is just tooo lovely
Cool idea, I will see if they have it at my supermarket, the next time, Pomelos are there.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt I bought one in Asianfresh Market in Philadelphia Pa. SO delicious! Thank you.
@@minasmith-segal4577 Awesome, glad you found one to try. :) You are welcome!
Excellent directions 👍I bought a Pomelo from my supermarket since I'm always looking for non-traditional fruit to increase my daily fruit servings. I didn't find your video until I sectioned it. Not the best way to eat a Pomelo 🙃I will definitely use your 1st method next time 😋
Thank you! glad you got to try one!
I found both the Pink (Red) & White Pomelos at a Asian Market that was about two blocks from me. I loved both color...and was BLOWN AWAY BY THE AMOUNT OF VITAMIN C ONE POMELO PROVIDED!!! 🤯🤯🤯
HOLY AMAZEBALLS!!! 🤯🤯🤯
I know right?? So much vitamin C!! Seriously one of my favorite citrus. I can't wait to have a yard where I can grow them.
You can buy them on line
This is the worst way to eat a pomelo. But it works i guess
Whatever you say. Yes, it does work. I showed three different methods on the video, not just one method. Pick which way works the best for you.
Tell us a better way?
Just tried it. Good fruit.
Glad you tried it!
The Mandarin, the Citron, and the Pomelo are the ancestors of all citrus, mostly. The Kumquat, Papada, and a few others round out the group.
Yes those are all citrus
It tastes like a fruit we called shaddock, are they related
Yep! they are the same thing. Shaddock is another name for it. :)
Where can I get this variety of shaddock pummelo thx
@@baomichael If they don't sell them at your local supermarket, try a specialty Asian market, or farmer's market. Or you can probably always buy them online, but they will be more expensive.
6:55 it Almost looks like a small young coconut with the green skin and the pith
yeah, it does!
Interesting,I’m gonna try some
Awesome!! Definitely try it if you can find it.
I bought one for 1.79 a lb. Mine weighs 2.5 lbs. I a looking forward to eatting it.
Awesome, Kevin!! Let me know how you like it after tasting it. :)
I don’t like to waste any of the fruit due to cutting!! 😬
I got one of these for the first time. Without knowing I did method #2 Really good. I only could eat 1/2 so I have the other half for today. They are putzie but really good. I got it in WI at woodmans
Awesome!! Glad you tried it and liked it! It is definitely one of my favorite citrus.
What happened to the heath benefits information??😢
You must have missed it. I mention the health benefits at 1:58 in the video
That’s Huge! It looks like a massive Green orange
I know right? It is the largest of the citrus!
i just got one to try then came home with it and didn't know what to do with it.
nice!
I loved this guy as Stanford Blatch in Sex And The City- so glad to find out that he has a YT channel!
"Method One" is a lot easier when done with a "grapefruit knife", (available everywhere.)
sure if you want to buy a specific knife just for grapefruit, if you aren't eating grapefruit very often, it is not worth it.
You can get them at Costco.
Yeah here in AZ, when they are in season, which the season is very short, they can be found at most supermarkets.
I like the bitter variant
Cool!
We call it jambura in our country
Nice! Yeah there are several names for it, depending on where you live.

I have tasted a small piece of an orange peel without eating it and it taste like toothpaste but way worse
yeah haha
I also grow this Pomelo.
Cool!!
It becomes more tasty when we put curd, suger, salt, red chilly, oil and mix well ..
Yes, all kinds of things you can add to it!
Yup. We do that in Nepal haina ta
No, in Vietnam, we peel the whole skin, then the meat & eat raw or with shrimp salt :).
So peel it like a grapefruit!?!?
Very similar, although the white part (Pith) is much thicker than a grapefruit. But one of those methods I showed where I cut it in half and then cut around just the fruit part and scoop it out with a spoon is exactly how I eat a grapefruit as well.
I ate one of these when visiting the solomon islands. I thought it was a strange variant of grapefruit.
That is cool, Joshua! Yeah it is very similar to a grapefruit.

“May promote weight loss “ well, I had no idea fruit could talk let alone act as your fitness coach!
hahaha but you are missing the definition of promote. Promote isn't just someone "promoting" a product, etc. It literally means, "further the progress of something, etc." "Promote weight loss" is a very common phrase in the English language. It doesn't have to do with someone speaking.
