I picked up a 3060 12gb last year. It runs everything I have thrown its way at 1080p with a comfortable amount of fps. I upgraded from a GTX 1050 ti so playing nearly every game I tackled on Ultra settings has been mind blowing. You served me well my 1050 ti!

@@jakisrandom826 As far as I know the 3060 ti is not a 12gb version. The 12gb one is the non-ti version. The 3060 ti is 8gb and is stronger than the 12gb model. And it is reasonable to believe the 3070 is even stronger than that. The appeal of the 3060 12gb non-ti is probably its vram size. I say go for the best value for your needs and affordability.

I'm a texture artist this is why choosing a high VRAM is one of the greatest factor since 2012.

Linus is a nvidia fanboy pure and simple. He literally hates AMD and doesn't even try to hide it. Partly that's butthurt over old Radeon encoders because his actual profession is video editing and rendering for a living and Radeon's GCN encoders etc sucked. But he is still a fanboy, and it is still a cope for nVidia's notoriously bad VRAM. It was nVidia who got hit with literally a class action lawsuit over their VRAM practices--and lost, being forced to pay millions in compensation to 3.5gb GTX 970 owners. Why does this matter is because swapping to system RAM after running out of video memory causes crashing and stuttering. They always put just enough on their 80ti to stay relevant, then gimped lower end cards with just enough to last until next marketing cycle. This matters for games a lot at ultra settings, especially high texture memory and raytracing that use lots of vram. 3070 ages badly for that reason. That's why it's basically a 1080p card despite being fast enough for light 4k. Ironically it'd be some of the most premium hardware if it wasn't run like some coconut banging tinpot company out of a van in Brooklyn. If it just had 12gb VRAM it'd still be a relevant gaming card. But it's not. So at 1440p you have to lower settings or watch it stutter and crash.

for laptops, even though 4080m and 4090m is only 4gb vram and 10% performance difference, the latter can push higher resolutions or pushing extreme load like multiple android emulators and a game at the same time, vram already ran above 14gb, so 4080m just lag out at that point due to running out of vram. my load is pretty specialized though

I heavily roasted this card when it came out because its rasterization was so pathetic compared to the 3060 ti, and it having more VRAM than a higher performing card was useless since it would most likely be a 1080p card, and that VRAM makes it more expensive than it needed to be.
I still roast it because it's a shit card in the 3000 lineup (but so is the 3070 ti with its measely 8GB), but damn am I mad at Nvidia for giving a low powered card that much VRAM when they should have been packing 10 GB+ into the 3060 ti (10 GB), the 3070 (12 GB), and 3070 ti (12GB). THAT would have made more sense. MY 1070 ti had 8 GB... what the hell Nvidia.
The 3060 is technically more suited for 4K gaming even if you run it on low settings compared to the higher priced cards which can theorically handle higher rasterization. It's like they completely forgot that games have been getting more VRAM demanding. Or they did this intentionally to force sales of the 4000 series - which is funny cause sales are at an all time low. So they better get their act together and start being consumer friendly or they'll feel the losses.

It's not a "shit card", it's just overpriced most of the time. Put that sucker a bit under MSRP and it's a steal.

If you look at the specs and comparisons the 1080ti is almost exactly the same as the 3060, the 1080ti has 384bit memory bus and is faster with raster processing, but the 3060 has DLSS and better drivers now, as well as Ray tracing cores since it plays Control pretty well with RT enabled at least. I was debating between the two for £300 on ebay, went for the 3060 and since upgraded to a 2K 240hz screen and it runs all my games pretty well, older ones at higher fps of course but even newer ones at 60+ full graphics mostly, which is surprising to me I wasn't expecting it to cope well at 2K

if 3060 ti had 16 or atleast 12gb vram then definitely it would be the best card ever, but since future proofing is a considerable thing, atleast 12gb vram gpus should be considered,
192bit is low but not that low, 12gb 192bit is much better that 8gb 256bit.
horizon zero, Valhalla , fc6, cyberpunk , cod warzone, ghostwire can consume 8gb + vram even in 1080p ultra sometimes, so definitely future games will consume even more to run just the games

I think 8gb for 1440p should be okay for a while, with maybe the odd tweak to some settings after 2-3 years but games will be more demanding then anyway so I'll be using medium settings anyway on my 3070 laptop.

What can you say about issues people have with Hynix vram manuf on TI versions? Need your opinion please

  •  ปีที่แล้ว +10

Hi, it's great video about bottleneck!
people always talk about less vram is enough. I don't know, it may be that the pr experts of the companies provide this and convince the communities. A gaming card should have a minimum vram of 12-16 gb. not accepting this can be explained by inexperience or ignorance.
In my tests, I've seen cases where the rtx 3060 is much better than the rtx 3070. Until the 8gb vram is full, the rtx 3070 performs much better. When 8gb of vram is full, the rtx 3060 performs tens of times better. Who buys the rtx 3070 wants to believe he has a better card than the rtx 3060 in any case. but the truth is not like that. rtx 3060 is a much better card when 8gb vram is exceeded. if the rtx 3070 came out with 16gb vram, it would last for many years because it's a very fast card. I told that the reason for the aging of this card would be 8 gb vram. Of course they didn't believe. They mentioned vram speed etc.
Why would people buy a more expensive card if they're going to bother not filling up 8gb of vram?
No matter how fast the vram is, it is useless when full. like a ram. imagine 2 gb 6400 mhz ddr5 ram trying open a chrome on windows 11. speed totally useless if vram or ram filled.
When the vram is full, games automatically lower the texture quality. Although it looks ultra, you will see medium or low. We call this utilization. Many people are unaware of this.
We bought 12 gb rtx 3060 for all our adobe photoshop & davinci resolve workstation machines. The most functional card I've ever seen. 12gb vram for $329 is amazing. Saved us from buying the rtx a series gpu. When you install nvidia studio driver, you get real professional experience in programs.

For a lot of thinks like Nvidia Cuda the more vram is essencial. Running with lower bandwith on the 3060 with more vram is better because you can run higher Resolution in models, slower, but with only 8 GB vram on the the 3070 that wouldn'twork at all.

I have 3070 on 1440P and in newer games I set the textures to High quality. That's enough and you don't know the difference from Ultra in most newer games. But under load, yes. Most of the ultra on high textures I am able to reduce the graphics memory by 1-2GB.
+ I do not play preset games. I set the shadows to medium, post processing to high, water to ultra. I'll set most to high and that's enough.
But I don't want to defend Nvidia again.
She could supply at least 10GB at 3070.

so the takeaway from this video is:
in the FEW GAMES out there that use super optimized engines which can pump out an incredible number of FPS at 4k, like doom eternal or racing games, the 3060 12 GB will keep smooth sailing at 4k while the 3060ti, the 3070 and 3070ti crap themselves once the 8GB threshold is crossed.
BUT in most OTHER games, the engine becomes so demanding at 4k that the 3060, which already outputs some 35 fps less than the 3070ti in most games, will chug along just as bad as a 3070ti but not due to lack of vram but due to lack of rasterization power.

It's becoming a trend too. We've had hogwarts legacy, re4, and last of us all come out in recent times, and all of them demand insane amounts of vram at resolutions where a 3070 should crush it.

So the vram is why it runs at like 40fps on 3070 unless I "trick" it into running right? I sometimes have to turn graphics to low then back to ultra to get it up to the 100 something plus fps. But Ive heard alot of different places doom had some issues to where you would have to trick it to work again because even sometimes when everything's on low it still has the same fps takes a few times to get it working so it actually might be doom that is messed up with memory or leak or something idk

You could be experience a memory leak, though this video was mostly a "worst case" or "future" scenario. In doom I'd drop the "texture pool size" down from ultra nightmare to just regular nightmare. It's really what made the 3070 choke, and all it does is reduce pop-in a little bit.
