    If your purpose is just to play games, having 12GB of VRAM is too much for you. However, for video editing or rendering purposes, VRAM becomes crucial. Higher VRAM capacity can significantly impact rendering performance-the more, the better. But having 12GB VRAM on the RTX 3060 doesn't necessarily mean it outperforms the RTX 4060 8GB in rendering and video editing tasks. The RTX 4060, with its higher CUDA core count, can still excel despite its lower VRAM capacity. You'll only need higher VRAM if you're handling larger projects with extensive scenes and heavy textures.
    In terms of future-proofing, a higher VRAM size can make your GPU more future-proof. The RTX 3060 12GB can be considered future-proof in terms of VRAM size. However, the RTX 4060 is also future-proof due to its newer architecture, which may offer better compatibility with newer software and longer support from NVIDIA compared to the RTX 3060.
    Regarding power consumption, the RTX 4060 consumes less power than the RTX 3060 due to its newer architecture. If you live in a city with expensive energy costs, this difference in energy consumption should be a consideration.
    I hope it helps...😉

      It is actually. Looking at how frame generation working you will need more vram. Like this guy didn't use amd fsr 3.1 . If he did you will see why 12gb is just better and also future proof

      @@siddharthsahu7123 i would recommend 12gb or 16gb. 8GB is already too little for modern triple A games. I would recommend 12 or even 16 if that fits your budget. You could try a rx6800 with 16gb of vram, or if you want current gen you could try a 7700XT. A 8GB card probably wont do well running a modern game like GTA6.

    This comparison is a tiny bit misleading, because you're relying on the game's graphical presets. I'm presently playing HFW on a slightly downvolted RTX 3060 12gb, at 1080p. By researching which specific graphical settings are actually worth raising, and which ones are just wasting resources, I can get a steady 70-75 FPS pretty much everywhere with absolutely gorgeous graphics. And as for those 12gb of VRAM, they allow you to play with higher resolution textures which makes a big difference in graphical detail. And besides gaming, those 12gb come in handy for tinkering with AI image generation software, like Stable Diffusion.

    If only the RTX 4060 has 10 gb vram instead of 8 with the same specs and price, it would be one of the best cards in history on Quality/ price value
    But the problem is that 12gb in the 3060 will be more helpful in the future games like gta 6 for example.
    Well, I think I will wait for the 5060 and let's hope it don't come with 8gb vram as well.

    I have had a 4060 for 6 months and am reasonably happy - you can sense it's limits when pushing games at 1440p, but overall, as an entry level card this gen, it's decent. The energy consumption vs. performance delivered is a clear bonus. I will switch it out for a 4070 soon though, as I prefer gaming at 1440p and I think that would be better for my set-up. No regrets though and I will hold the card as a back up.

    192bit bus, full x16 lanes, 12gb vram .... and by applying ultra textures ,+ mods 12gb vram will definitely come in handy. ofc it will provide less fps than 4060 in some latest titles but it will be smooth and stable and atleast no texture blurrs or stutters.... and even framge generation needs more vram hence 4060 is already struggling on vram hungry games.

      There is a lot of criticism for this card, which I totally understand. 4GB more VRAM and a 192 bit interface would have made this card a beast. And that is exactly the point why NVIDIA cut the specs for not interfering with their own products.

    Many commenters do not realize that memory alone does not mean higher quality or better performance, now or in the future. This video perfectly shows how important technical progress is and how it affects the development of the technologies we use. Just look at the fact that other cards also have more memory, which does not mean that they have stood the test of time. If we are to rely solely on the amount of VRAM, we can say that 1080Ti or even 2080Ti should be better than 4060. Coming to the essence of the matter, many people only look at the numbers and do not realize that drivers, technical design, newer controllers, newer APIs are more important because the GPU can use its power more effectively. Likewise, we forget that developers optimizing their productions will not bother with GPU that is 3-4 years old or more, they will optimize their productions based on the latest architecture, which is why, among other things, slower RAM and its smaller amount do not affect lower performance. RTX 3060 is only better when you currently have it in terms of replacing the GPU, if you are building a new computer, never go back a few years because a few numbers are higher. Of course, we are talking about the case assuming a given budget, if you currently have a top-shelf GPU and you want a budget GPU, for it to be worth changing, you have to wait 2 and sometimes even 3 generations.

      Whilst newer arcitecture of GPUs and CPUs result in better performance in general, vram does play a big roll in some games, the RE engine for example is very vram hungry, and the resident evil games actually run better on the 3060 12gb than it does on the 4060 8gb, because of the 4060s vram bottleneck, and even this video he shows how the 4060s lack of vram is effecting performance running frame generator wboch was developed for the 4000 series cards!! My advice for anyone, looking for a new card from this generation, would be either ignore the 4060 and just save up for a 4070, or if you must keep it around £400 go for a 7700xt, or if you are on a real budget, look at the used market and look for a 3070, 6700xt or if you can find one for a good price a 6800xt

      @@adamduffield7782 I can't agree with everything you write about. Even though the 4060 has little VRAM, older cards were not always able to use this VRAM. Therefore, in 90% of cases, the 4060, despite the smaller amount of memory, is better than the 3060 12GB. My advice is to buy what someone can afford because prices vary depending on the region. In my case, the RX6700XT is about $50 more expensive than the 4060, which is a big difference, and used cards such as the 3070 are much more expensive than the new 4060. And not everyone wants a card from AMD, I also choose RTX over RX precisely because not only high numbers matter, but software changes a lot. As for the frame generator, the increase in memory consumption is not large, about 200-300 MB, so if the game uses around 7GB of VRAM, you can safely use it and gain a lot in terms of FPS. It should also be remembered that the cards from the ..60 series were not created with longevity in mind, these are budget cards and if we want to have a card for more than 2 or 3 years, we have to take into account higher expenses. Coming to the point, I recommend buying a card that you can afford, I personally will always choose the newer technology over the older one if we are talking about the same price (as in the case of 3060 and 4060).

For 4060 Ti, those VRAM would be much useful because of all the bells and whistles, RTX, Frame Generation and NVIDIA FG actually uses more VRAM than AMD. I have said in some other comments I made that I was not super happy with my RTX 4060 investment. That said, It is in my second rig and not primary. Also I forgot to mention that I do indeed think the RTX 4060 has a few things going for it. It's extremely power efficient, It's nice for upscaling thanks to DLSS and it does indeed have frame generation. Even if the VRAM kinda limits framegen in many cases. So far I have no issues doing 1440p with it in the modern games I have. Upscaling and textures a notch down and I have 60 fps +. It's not a bad card, but I think it should have been cheaper for what it is. But then again, graphics cards are kinda overpriced. Also, in this video it is very clear that the RTX 4060 is quite a bit better VS the 3060. Even though it's nice that the 3060 has 12GB VRAM, in many cases it doesn't have the GPU power to back up that VRAM.

    • @theivadim
      @theivadim  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I think that both options suck. But I'd pick the RTX 4060 because it has a bit more life in it thanks to higher compute power. RTX 3060 struggles to deliver good FPS in the latest games already. It's not able to utilise that 12GB of memory because the GPU is not powerful enough to deliver high enough FPS at higher graphics presets. Unless you are prepared to tweak all settings individually for every game. Every time. But then you could also do that for the 4060. So, no matter how it's twisted the 4060 still comes out on top in my opinion.

    I was surprised by this. If we put frame generation aside, I'm not sure why 4060 would still be performing 40% better in this selection of recent AAA games. The cynic in me says the game devs and nvidia driver devs have worked with each other to make certain optimisations only for the new gen, and perhaps excluded those optimisations from previous gen. This would be convenient as it shows off how much better the new gen is, which in turn creates more demand for them. The previous gen has 50% more ram, 50% wider memory bus, 16% more cuda cores, but 38% slower clock speed. Could it be that the latest AAA games just favour clockspeed above all else? But on another selection of games there are supposedly more like 10-15% difference in performance, so that makes me think it's something about these particular games that just likes the 4060 so much more. And the 4060 you chose was a cheap little one with a pathetic cooler, and it still beat the 3060 dramatically on your 3 test games.

    • @theivadim
      @theivadim  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This little 4060 performs the same as a bigger one would in these room temperature conditions. But this little cooler does begin to struggle if the room temperature gets above 23-25C. Fans starts running at 100% and GPU throttles🙂
      You could be right about optimisations. NVIDIA certainly prioritises newer products. I don't know about game devs though, because their priority is to sell as many copies of their game as possible. And there are a lot of RTX 3060 users out there🙂 Many more than RTX 4060 users.

      Just looking at more benchmarks from various places and yes it seems 4060 is about 25% faster across the board, which is consistent with your findings.
      I think it is most likely the faster clock speed giving the 4060 the advantage as that is the only hardware parameter where it significantly excels over 3060. I could be wrong, but a 38% faster clock is quite a lot, that has got to count for something.
      I just bought 3060 ventus 2x, waiting for it to arrive. I don't have buyer's remorse as I wanted it for win7 backwards compatibility, lower price, and I don't play AAA games just older PC games, emulators, and HTPC (MadVR)

    You just sound like a paid agent for advertising nvidias 40 series. In most of these cases having 10 fps more doesnt matter because i guarantee it will drop below 60 often with the 4060 anyway and is much more prone to stuttering with 8gb vram. Not to mention the reduced bus width etc etc

    • @christophermullins7163
      @christophermullins7163 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      The reduced buswidth is a non issue for 40series. Nvidia put in the work to make sure that they didn't have to give you the same buswidth to achieve the same performance.. this is because they didn't want to have to give you double the VRAM for a certain tier. This is why every teir has a lower memory bus. 40 series is designed to not need as many memory chips for a certain performance. Just look at 3090(12 memory channels) vs 4070ti(6 memory channels).
      But yeah. Vram amounts suck. Nvidia should have just kept all bus width the same per tier and just doubled the vram but it's Nvidia. They're cruel and evil and willing to fuck ignorant consumers for an extra buck.

They optimise 1080p experience with the 8GB RTX 4060 in mind because a lot of people have it and will keep buying it in the near future. So, if they want to sell their games then they must make sure that they run well on the 4060. What will happen in 2-5 years is anyones guess.

      I'm not sure we can say the GPU itself is not powerful enough to take advantage of 12GB. For all we know it could be the game which cannot, or does not, take advantage of it. What do you store in VRAM? What is VRAM for primarily? What does it help with? Rasterisation at higher resolutions? Keeping textures and assets in memory to avoid having to swap them to system RAM? Do you need a specific clockspeed to take advantage of VRAM? (clockspeed is 4060's main hardware advantage it seems). I'm asking because in other tests on other channel with Cyberpunk there were less microstutters on 3060 which youtuber attributed to higher VRAM -- 3060 was actively using 10GB and 4060 was using 6GB. But I have no idea if VRAM was the reason, for all I know it could just be a baseless claim. "Oh look, 3060 has more memory, and it's running better, so it must be the memory". Without knowing how the game engine works I don't know if that's true.

    • @theivadim
      @theivadim  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Animal_lives_matter That could be the case. However, what I care about in the first place is the experience a product delivers. There could be a multitude of reasons why a product's full potential is not being utilised. An average user simply want to buy a product that delivers a good experience. Not fight with these companies for fair practices or improving performance of the GPU they haven't even purchased yet. They'll simply buy a product that works well out of the box to enjoy games today. At least that's how I approach this matter when picking new products I'd like to buy.

      I mean the 4060 will have trouble using its main feature, FG because FG eats up more vram. The real 4060 is the 4060ti but with 192bit bus + 12gb of vram. Had that been the case, it'd have beaten the 3070ti and not been far off the current 4070. Likely within 10-20% of it. Which makes the 4070 more akin to a glorified 4060ti.
      The 4060 is really just a glorified and OC'd 4050ti. And even at that it fails as it really should've been a 160bit 10gb card with a 75w and 100w version. The laptop 4050, if given a 128bit bus with 8gb of vram, would've been the real 4050 and it too should've had a 75w and 90w version.

The 4060 should've been 200 USD or less to make it a great buy. The 4060 is slower than the 3060 Ti, which is disappointing. One commenter from that video said, "Nvidia needs to realize that frame gen does not make up for bad performance, and that 99% of games do not use frame gen, and literally anything other than gaming doesn't benefit from it either, raw performance matters."
      Fewer 4 GB of VRAM than the 3060, 128-bit instead of 192-bit on the 3060, 272 GB/s memory bandwidth compared to 360 GB/s on the 3060.
      This comment from Vex's video "Nvidia’s Insane Success and Greed is leading to Self-Destruction." said, "GPUs are for more than just playing games. People need high VRAM for huge Blender projects and professional CAD. Right now is like back before Ryzen when you had to get an Intel HEDT for higher core counts. Up until Ada you needed a Quadro or a 3090 for higher VRAM. Ada at least got more than 8GB to the 80 and 70 tier cards but it's still a $500 premium. That's why AMD is doing well with professionals, with 16GB of VRAM for just $320 on the 7600 XT being an absolute steal. So don't assume everything is for games, you're making a complete fool out of yourself."

    So was it stupid is what i still ask myself when i see that the rtx4060 has alot of more fps in almost all games(a few games that demands over 8gb vram that are peretty close w the older 30series gpu)
    500 euro difference would it have been worth it in 2023/12/31 so about 6 months back now..
    Also what will i need to save up to next time to be able to game in 1080p ultra settings w r.t on??
    example rtx4070ti or super in a prebuilt w a ok cpu that works ok w the gpu will this be enough in about 12months or 18months even??
    I know that the 50series rtx fpus are soon comming so the rtx5060 and rtx5070 how will they compare to todays higly used 1080p gaming cards(rtx3060/4060 and amds gpus)
    Will it(mayby)Be better to get a rtx5060 when it comes vs a rtx4070ti prebuilt pc...This is pretty hard to say before info has come about the hardware i guess??
    Anyway 1080p max settings with Ray tracing at maximum what is n will be needed to run it for me in 1years time up to 18months(if we say 10-15% increase in games that will come vs whats needed today for same gameplay at maximum in 1080p)
    Hope u understand what i try to ask(dont know this stuff n dont really know where to look either to be 100% sure)

      The RTX 4060 build for extra 500 Euros is absolutely not worth it. No way!🙅‍♂️ And as for the future, we'll have to wait and see what the RTX 50-series brings. NVIDIA has the potential to either pleasantly surprise us or horribly disappoint when it comes to RTX 5060/70 cards. No one knows yet how they'll configure those cards. Also, 5060/70 cards are still many many months away. 5090 and 5080 will launch first. If I wanted a low to mid-tier GPU now then I wouldn't wait until RTX 50-series. The wait is too long imho.
      Furthermore, I'd recommend looking into moving to a 1440p monitor. DLSS is so good now that you can enjoy games on a 1440p monitor and it'll be a more pleasant experience than 1080p. Thanks to DLSS I use the RTX 4070 SUPER to play games on a 4K monitor using DLSS Quality or Balanced. Good stuff.

    The reason nvidia and amd won't give you good budget options is because why bother? People often defend the 4060 by saying its efficient and the performance is ''good enough''. Its not. Nobody even points out that from specs and performance, its more akin to a 4050ti. I mean I've seen people even defend the 8gb of vram. Why bother releasing good value cards? Nvidia realized their ''mistake'' when they made pascal too good. They aren't going to repeat that. And trust me, AMD made the same mistake with rx6000. They're no better than nvidia overall. They too will follow nvidia's example.
    The rx5500xt, 6500xt and 3050 all have had 8gb of vram. Thats 3 generations of xx50 class having 8gb of vram. Its about time they got a boost. 4060 should've been a 4050ti with a 160bit bus and 10gb of vram. That too with a 75w version and 100w version, so we can actually utilize its efficiency. 4050 should've been the laptop 4050 but with a 128bit bus and 8gb of vram. And had a 75w and 90w version. I mean the 1050 and 1650 had this.
    But, I don't think the future of 8gb cards will be as bleak some people say because what games you play dictate how much vram you'll need. AAA games suck in general. From being just interactive movies to unoptimized ports to incredibly boring in general, why bother? A lot of folks are shifting to modding older games, playing older titles or just playing indie titles.
    Besides, upgrade cycles have increased now as well. And likely will continue given how things are going. I mean the fact, that pascal, which is 7 years old now, is STILL relevant, to the point that remedy had to optimize AW2 specifically for pascal, just goes to show how little people have started to care about new AAA titles.
    I wouldn't suggest waiting on the rtx 5000 series considering the 5060 will be another crap 128bit 8gb card.
