Maybe it inspired George Martin but the events were different. In the Red Wedding the entire Stark wedding party (minus Edmure Tully) were butchered while in the great hall. The Black Dinner, and later events at Glencoe in 1692, the Douglas Clan was falsely accused of treason, and both William Douglas' (the 6th and 8th Earl of Douglas respectively), were taken out to Castle Hill for trial, and was beheaded, and William Douglas the 8th Earl of Douglas was stabbed 26 times.

When Cat screams "LET HIM GO" for a sec I unreasonably think it might actually happen. It's partly due to my own subconscious trope expectation of the hero getting himself out of the trickiest situation, and partly due to the sheer conviction in her voice. Her high pitched acting in that scene is more reminiscent of a Shakespeare Broadway play than normal TV acting, but it works, probably cause the whole scene feels like a fever dream. And then of course, it doesn't. It's similar to when Arya sees Greywind and everyone automatically go "oh she's gonna free him". But it's GoT. The dog gets Jon Wicked too.
It’s wild how many loops this show put us through! Very unpredictable yet very successful at pulling off these wild twists!
Michelle Fairley did an amazing job! That scream is so full of despair and horror, it is gut wrenching.

It’s an interesting comparison between Robb and Ned, I feel like they both suffered due to naivety, but Ned was trying to be honorable, while Robb didn’t honor his promise… I wonder if that honor contrast is intentional or not. Thanks for the comment Chance!

Who knew to graduate from Sweet Summer Child to Man of Winter all you gotta do is watch Sean Bean's son, Sean Bean's wife, Sean Bean's son's wife and Sean Bean's unborn grandson all die a gruesome death 😂. They even stabbed up Charlie Chaplin's granddaughter, smh ruthless lol. If Zay still feeling terrible about Robb look on the bright side. Robb's still better off than his ex bestie Theon😂. Well, there it is. Not much for any of us to say. Possibly the most harshest episode in TV history. Isaiah's extended dropped jaw says it all really.
In the show you first hear the full song when Bronn and the Lannister soldiers are singing it right before Blackwater. At the end of that episode you hear the marching tune of that song as Tywin makes his legendary entrance in the throne room.Then a whole season later Cersei tells Margaery about the story of House Reyne. The foreshadowing is there in bits and pieces. But everytime so much else is going on it is designed to make those little bits of info feel trivial. Everyone always focus on Joffrey doing something terrible at the Sansa Tyrion wedding, but that one ends up being a red herring. This is the one. "And now the rains weep o'er his hall, with not a soul to hear". System of a Down's Serj Tankian has a live orchestral performance of Rains of Castamere that you can find on youtube. It's so good. It's one of my favorite piece of music from the GoT verse.
Absolutely agree, it’s an essential aspect of the show for me! And love that they had three weddings happening around the same time, so new viewers that have heard the term “red wedding” won’t be able to pinpoint when or where it happens!
@MrImATool Oh yeah the tune has definitely been played before. When Tyrion whistled it and in various other moments of S2 too. When Arya was in Harrenhal for eg. But the first time you hear the song actually being sung in the show was def during Blackwater.

I actually thought it was priceless that you were both wearing red for this episode. Wasn't sure if it was on purpose, or just coincidence...but was very fitting regardless. Gotta say Isaiah has great instincts...you were onto something, the moment the doors started to shut. But then it looked like you may have been second guessing yourself for the next few minutes. This one is rough man...wish i could tell you it gets easier, but i don't wanna lie to you...haha.

Another 'Red Wedding' from history for you, not related to GOT in anyway. In September of 1066 England/Anglo Saxons were invaded and conquered by the Norman/French William, Duke of Normandy. By December he felt safe enough to have his coronation, at the same time, to help keep the peace between the Anglo Saxon War Lords and himself he negotiated marriages between them and the Daughters of French Dukes, some as young as 8yrs.
On Xmas Eve, after his coronation came the marriages, as was tradition with the Anglo Saxons with celebrations they would let out a loud war cry. The Norman guards standing outside were unaware of this tradition and thought their King was being murdered so rushed in and started hacking people to bits.
Good start to being King! It actually set the seed for the rest of his reign as he didn't build his first castle (The White Tower, within the Tower of London) until 1100 due to having to concentrate on constant uprisings of the Anglo Saxons.

I always find it interesting when people want Catelyn to kill Frey's young wife. That girl is Frey's victim and more innocent than all of them, except for Talisa's unborn child. She was just as innocent as the Lannister boys that Robb executed Rickard Karstark for killing. We understand the mother's pain and even Karstark's pain as a father, but we still felt he was wrong for killing those boys. I felt horrible for Catelyn seeing her son murdered (the actress did a phenomenal job in the scene), but once she killed an innocent, her death seemed as just as Karstark's.

Believe it or not this scene "The Red Dinner" happens A LOT in history in many culture and many countries all over the world, and they were bloodier than what in this show. We also have a history similar in my country where a whole family of nobles and royalty were butchered after a dinner party xD

Small feedback: during the red wedding section, Zay was frozen with his mouth opened (great reaction, very normal) and Cam starts doing small comments, breaking Zay's reaction. Just keep it quiet during those dramatic moments.
Also, Zay didn't look ready to start commenting about anything when Cam started to ask him for comments. Zay was tearing up at that moment. I just watched another reaction couple and there was no reaction or comments from the "Zay" on that reaction.

There's an added subplot that was cut from the show: In the book, Robb's wife isn't a foreign nurse, but a girl named Jeyne, the daughter of a Lannister Bannerman who's castle the North men conquered. Robb was injured in the battle, and Jeyne tended to him while he recovered. In a moment of weakness, Robb has sex with her, and marries her out of a sense of honor. It's implied that Jeyne's mother was in contact with Tywin Lannister, and their relationship was set up specifically to break the Stark-Frey alliance.
That is so wild! I wonder why they cut that, maybe to make the situation seem a tad more natural and less set up? Either way, thank you for this piece of knowledge!
To add to what the OP wrote: In the books, this plan goes even further. Jeyne's Mother, per Tywin's indication or instigation, regularly supplies her daughter with a beverage that she claims will help conception, but which is actually either an abortifacient or an oral contraceptive. This was done to eliminate any possibility of Robb having a child, and thus prevent the North rebellion to continue, gathered around this would-be child. Also, it would stop the Stark lineage (at this point, Sansa is a prisoner in King's Landing, Arya has disappeared for months and is considered dead, and Rickon and Bran are supposedly dead, killed either by Theon or in the battle of Winterfel).

I remember reading the books before the show and I knew what happened at the red wedding and laughed to myself when the night before the episode aired people at work would ask me what is going to happen in the next episode and i just smiled and said you'll see and the look on their faces the next day at work

If Robb had to have married someone other than Talisa, why couldn’t it have been Margaery Tyrell? I get that he wants independence for the North but he should’ve just declared himself as the king of Westeros and then wed Margaery once Renly was slain. And he could even wed Loras to Sansa once they took King’s Landing. The Tyrells have lots of food, soldiers, and resources as they are the second most richest great house of Westeros behind the Lannisters. And with Robb’s military mind and Margaery’s political mind than those 2 might’ve been great rulers together.
Great point, I don’t think the Tyrells would have found it in their best interest though, of course I could be wrong!

The Red Wedding is probably one of the most well known and infamous episodes in television history. Now that you're a sturdy person of winter you can spend an eternity just watching the thousands of reactions to the Red Wedding episode lmao. but season 4 is really the last time the show understands how to kill main characters, unfortunately, all the characters have mega plot armor and refuse to die for the last four seasons. Thier ability to meracilously survive the impossible over and over took me out of it compared to the early seasons.
