Protecting the retreat, is btw what the 300 Spartans actually did at Thermopylae, (the army was around 3k, most of them from a town near the Battlefield, and when the Persians found a way to attack that town, the Spartans organized a structured retiret that left them as the last unit on the field)
So it wasn't just an amazing sacrifice, but also a strategic masterpiece, that avoided probably almost all casualties accept them self
The Unsullied share so many characteristics with the old Spartans, that they must be G. R. R. Martin's tribute to them

    • @razz2552
      @razz2552 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yeah the whole gist of Targaryen's can't burn is not true. What Dany did was basically like a one time deal and she understood from the witch for paying for a life you must give a life. Her ordeal from the first season was of blood magic and she knew the consequences.

But keep in mind, in season 1, when taking a bath, she doesn't get burned by the hot water. Then when she takes the dragon eggs out of the fire, her hands don't burn, but the other girls hands do. Granted, that is not fire, but occurs before the witch

Be prepared for the flurry of people hating on this episode, guys. Myself included. 😆 It's iconic for having extremely important things take place within it, sure, but how they happened were often times painfully stupid and disappointing. I would argue that it's the best of the season, but I don't know if I'd put it in my top 10 of all time. When I saw this episode at the time it came out, I left it saying to myself "what did I just watch"...literally, I couldn't tell what was going on half the time.

I couldn't wait to see you react to this. All of Arya's training since Jon gave her needle led her to this moment. So many lil clues when you look back point to Arya being the one to kill the Night King. So many disagree with me, trust me, at 1st watch I thought it would be Jon. But he is the Catalyst that encourage her on her path. He is the one who got everyone together to fight the war, it would not have happened without him. The Prince that Was Promised. But, I knew there had to be a reason Arya trained to be quick, quiet, learn to switch hands, fight in the dark etc. That's my Girl

My take on the last seen. Every complains that Brann does absolutely nothing. But he is the chessmaster. (Reminds me of the movie Wanted). Brann needed the Night King to stand in that exact spot at that exact moment. Arya knew the absolutely only way to get close enough to the Night King is get caught by him. Nothing of the sequence was happenstance.

About the Unsullied and their stand protecting the retreat - there's a military fighting position commonly referred to as a DIP. It stands for Die In Place. Essentially it is the point at which you can retreat no further, be it because of terrain, enemy forces encircling you, or friendly/civilian forces pulling out behind you.

Watching along with your reaction was the first time I had rewatched this episode in full since it aired, and I had forgotten how god damned stressful it was throughout! Obviously, I knew what was gonna happen, but I still held my breath throughout the library sequence!
I will say, this is nitpicking but it still irks me, putting the main characters, ie, brienne, Jaime etc in the front line and have them survive the initial attack let alone the entire battle didnt make sense to me. Having them in a safer position wouldn't have relieved any fear for their safety but would have made their ultimate survival more believable, imo anyway. That was really my only issue.
I wouldn't say it's one of my favourites, but i rate it highly, and it was a great episode!
Zay had the best reactions throughout. I hope you guys had a beer or something after to recover from the stress, lol!

It's important to catch that it is the Old Powers, not the New Gods, which answer to the Night King's Threat. The Lord of Light, the Faceless Death, the Children, the stolen weapons of the Harpy, the Three Eyed Raven... the Old Gods flexed for the saving of humanity. In a world where trial by combat establishes the will of the divine, the Old Gods struck down the faithless New Gods quite hard. The New Gods failed to show up for the Night King and their representatives have done nothing but bicker.

This was an epic episode, so well directed and acted, I personally didn't have a problem about the darkness of it as it added to the chaos and reality for the battle, if I couldn't see properly neither could they!
Your conversation around Melisandre and her role was interesting, she had confused me for a long time but think I'm settled in my head about her now, this whole episode was about character arcs and redemptions and I think Melisandre played hers out in this episode too.
Remembering back when she fled the Stannis camp and turned up at the wall and later admitting that burning Shireen and claiming Stannis was the Prince that was promised was a mistake made her doubt herself, we never saw the real Melisandre, frail and vulnerable before she accepted that.
I think she had to shake off the arrogant and manipulative Melisandre before she could use her powers to their full strength at the battle, she even doubted herself there too but that made her even more real. Her death was her own, almost like she wasn't going to afflict anyone else to a mistake if the old arrogant Melisandre returned. She was all about manipulation but I think she was the one that was easily manipulated by her own power and for that reason her death was so poignant.

This was the best episode in my book. Just by the sheer amount of suspense that had you from start to finish. Nothing quite captivated you from start to finish on the big screen like this episode did on TV. This episode got the 4th highest amount of "10" of "10" by voters on IMDB. Despite all that, many Monday Morning QBs who didn't quite like the ending of the show, went back & destroyed this episode too, giving it only a "7.5" avg.. What I found funny is that the screenplay writers got the brunt of the hate, but it was all them from the start of season 6 (Best rated season on IMDb, with 3 of the top 6 episodes coming from it) to here with no books to go off of. The ladder episodes of season 8, which got the majority of the hate, by mostly book fans, happens to be where George build the platform for the last stop. He knew exactly where all the cards would fall & told D&D the fate of all the main characters before they even shot the pilot. They followed his ending. They revealed all this backstage of the Emmy Awards, after collecting their 4th consecutive Best Drama Award for season 8, which happens to be the only 4 Best Drama Awards that the show won.

The God Was Split, into 3- The Night King, Lord of Light and the many Faces. Things had to happen to reunite This God, Death is not good or evil it simple is part of the cycle or Life , and all its faces, for one cannot exist without the other. Killing the Night King merging with the Lord of Light, now back together the god of life and death and all its many faces.

It’s up to you guys if you think Season 8 is trash, meh or great. See what you think. I read all of the current books (obviously the last two haven’t been released nor will they. Bitter much!). All I can say is that the show didn’t align with a lot of the foreshadowing previously presented (especially in the books). Now I know that GRRM has released a few spoilers about the ending of the books but my guess is that the books are not supposed to end exactly like the series. They've brightened the episode since it's original release, but the darkness really puts you in the episode and let's you feel how the characters would have felt fighting in the cold and the dark. When Theon died I remember bursting into tears and screaming, "What is dead may never die!" One thing that was interesting to me that the show never touched on to my knowledge is the connection between the Mormonts and the dire wolves, because Ghost was with both Jorah and Lord Commander Mormont while fighting the dead, Or maybe they covered it in history and lore and i missed it.

Love how you guys discuss your thoughts together. But, I gotta say, the cutaways are a pretty inexcusable writing choice imo. Yes, we've seen it be done before, but those circumstances were entirely different. There is NO way that Jamie, brienne, sam, etc would have survived their scenarios. Theres literal frames of them having their bodies covered in wights. They should be stabbin, not hugging lol. I feel like the choice to rely on the cutaways took away from the anxiety they were trying to create.

Thanks guys, I look forward with anticipation to your next entertaining romp through film!! ✌

you are right... Lyanna Mormont didn´t disapoint her family....she was the last!
    House Mormont died with her.
And we saw Arya in the battle only one time...fighting her way to hide in the library.
And we had fun with the running gag Jon rises his sword to do great things and gets saved in the last moment...like behind the wall... like in the battle of the bastards... like....
And you are angry Cerseys army isn´t there.... and where are the armies of the Karstarks, the Baelishs, the Blackwaters and all the other former allies the dumb Starks made enemies?
And how stupid to fight against the Boltons and losing so many soldiers for nothing while the white walkers are coming...

How can you call Aria a silent assassin when she screams as shes leaping toward the Night King? I hated that they had her scream. Awful choice.

You should know that no CGI Wolves were hurt in the making of this series.

Their battle plan was so pathetically stupid, it is the mediocre writing that can be blamed. Cause Jon, Jaime and Lord Royce have all battled before and that was the best they came up with? Bullshit. Plus the Unsullied and Dothraki. Frustrating how the war was only one episode.

The 'it being dark criticism' is just ridiculous, I watched this episode probably 5-6 times with my lights shut and didn't skip a beat

Agreed. It’s not too dark to follow. It’s dark enough that I feel immersed and can relate to how confusing and eerie it must have been to be standing there knowing you’re about to go to battle and can hardly see.

Most disappointing battle I've seen in a long time. Writers and directors show a complete lack of understanding of tactics and have the defenders of Winterfell do so many stupid things it's to long to list

True. knights on horses would be to the right and left of infantry. once the enemy was engaged with the infantry the horsemen would attack their flanks.

    They kinda forgot…
Not true. 65% of the audience HATES this episode and hates this season. There is too much to go i to but needless to say there are a million videos. EVERYTHING from the crypts to the darthraki to the fact that John was a sack of potatoes, that an 8 season build up ended in once episode. The narrative is dumb AF. The mistakes are horrendous. This whole season is trash. My thumbs aren’t nimble enough to write it all out. The “cutaway” is inexcusable for this show, which spent the first 4 seasons showing real life consequences, turned into a stupid cartoonish shit show. Oh! Sam is in a dire situation! He’s gonna die! Cut away. He’s fine. Oh no! Jamie and Brianne! Cutaway. They’re fine. No need to actually wrote anything.

Probably the most overhyped and most disappointing battle scene ever. So poorly constructed and directed.
