@@davidbrennan5973 Of course. I don’t make ill informed statements. The Piano was great but Angela’s performance farrrrr outweighed the performance of that actor, in my opinion.
Angela Bassett as Tina Turner and Gabourey Sidibe as Precious will forever be the two biggest Oscar snubs of all time. These are two, literally perfect performances and all they got from them were 2 nominations for Best Actress in a Leading Role and an “honorary” Oscar… If Mo'Nique hadn’t won her Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, we would’ve had a serious problem. It will never make sense to me how Gabourey was nominated alongside Meryl Streep for Julie & Julia, Helen Mirren for The Last Station, Carey Mulligan for An Education, and Sandra Bullock for The Blind Side but still lost. All the nominations in the 2010 Best Actress category were heavy hitters but I’m sorry not sorry, none and I mean NONE of them compared to Gabourey in Precious. Bullock’s performance in The Blind Side has not held up nearly as well as Sidibe’s in Precious. I stand by that and am fully cemented in my convictions. Angela Bassett and Gabourey Sidibe are always going to be the biggest Oscar snubs and that’s just a fact, simple as that. 🤷🏽♂️
1994 was the year I stopped watching the Oscars or should I say boycotted the Oscars. 2 great movies had actors nominated and both titles started off with What's. What's love got to do with it and What's eating Gilbert Grape. Both movies no matter what i'm doing I have to stop sit down and watch it.
Some people still don't understand that although this was fantastic acting, it was telling a terrible traumatic story. Most have been insensitive to Tina's story, overlooking it and making fun because of the dramatics in the movie😢
Holly Hunter played all the Piano pieces herself AND communicated in silent language throughout that movie! Angela putting "more work" into her role? Come the fuck on!
@@MrMcsiayou went too hard and serious over a question being asked. If anyone needs to ctfo for all of that it's you. They asked a question regarding the topic not put out a certified statement. But since we're talking subjective on which is more grueling, based on the examples given in the video of what Angela did for the character in the film it was "more work", yes. It's not gonna be the easiest (or the hardest) for someone to learn sign language or play piano but with what Angela did it is less work than that. It's ok to like that movie over this movie, but, there's no point in not trying to take a minute and commenting all over just bc you like it more.
@60wwediva People seem to forget how it can be kind of traumatizing to do scenes like that. Satoshi Kon actually touches on this in Perfect Blue when the main character has to endure a traumatizing scene for a movie and has a mental break. It really puts certain scenes from movies in a different perspective when you look at them again afterwards.
I take nothing away from Basset, she is incredible in this movie. Holly Hunter did not speak in The Piano. Her iconic little voice was not in that movie. She earned it.
Honestly, it’s too bad that What’s Love Got to Do with It wasn’t released in 1994 because the 1995 Oscars Best Actress race was weak. I loved Angela Bassett’s amazing performance but Holly Hunter’s performance in The Piano was equally amazing. Bassett should have won for BP 2 not Jamie Lee Curtis who gave a okay performance in EEAAO.
WRONG. Stephanie Hsu should have won for EEAAO. She blew the competition out of the water. No one in that category came close to the acting masterclass Hsu displayed in EEAAO. Bassett not winning an Oscar is more an indictment of the movie industry than the Oscars to be honest. Hunter was great in The Piano, no doubt about it, but she was offered many more interesting roles (and received more nominations) after her nomination. Bassett, on the other hand, was never offered anything of the same caliber as What's Love Got to Do with It, which is massive shame considering her talent. I know she was considered for Monster's Ball, and as much as I love Halle Berry, I completely understand why Bassett turned that the down the role. I won't go into details but if you have watched the movie and you know how Hollywood loves to typecast/degrade Black women then you get the gist of it.
She was absolutely perfect in this role. I remember reading an interview with Tina Turner quite a few years ago where she said Whitney Houston wanted the role, and a few people were trying to push her in that direction. She said Whitney has many talents, but she cannot handle the dance moves. Didn’t have the legs for it. She was in no way disrespectful in the interview, just knew that Whitney was the wrong choice. Man, Angela Bassett nailed it. I forgot I wasn’t watching Tina herself.
To honor Angela, would’ve honored Tina, Hollywood can’t honor one Black woman much less than two. If only we held our Black awards to the same notoriety😮. But self hate is every where.
Yup, that was one hell of a film! Angela Basset was fantastic in the role of Tina. When the film was sent out in limited release, I wondered to myself what the hell was wrong with the people in Hollywood.

After allllll of that, the fact that she didn’t win is just one of the biggest F*k Ups of Hollywood and the Oscars! This woman is truly phenomenal and I hate that she didn’t get her flowers then like she should have. But I’m more than happy that she is truly praised for her gifts now!

Angela Bassett is epic. She is a fantastic actor.
i sae this movie a year ago and was shocked to hear about this girls past. and whats wild is that my moms friends brother meet her in person
That letter from Tina Turner 😢❤
Some people still don't understand that although this was fantastic acting, it was telling a terrible traumatic story. Most have been insensitive to Tina's story, overlooking it and making fun because of the dramatics in the movie😢
Angela was great but Holly Hunter 100% deserved that Oscar for "The Piano", one of the most brilliant performances in movie history!
Exactly
Wasn't there a quote regarding this Oscar race that indicated that Angela put in more work as Tina when compared to Holly who played a mute woman?
Holly Hunter played all the Piano pieces herself AND communicated in silent language throughout that movie! Angela putting "more work" into her role? Come the fuck on!
Did you watch the piano? Holly Hunter deserved the Oscar, if you haven’t watched it, you can’t say “Angela deserved it”
@@MrMcsiayou went too hard and serious over a question being asked.
@@Boohurghhooangela had to endure domestic abuse scenes and intense dancing / performing. She worked harder
It’s crazy all those other nominees in 94 I never heard of any of them but Angela I still know very well
To honor Angela, would’ve honored Tina, Hollywood can’t honor one Black woman much less than two. If only we held our Black awards to the same notoriety😮. But self hate is every where.
On top of Angela Bassett being a phenomenal actor, shes an absolutely gorgeous woman
I missed your videos!!
Thank you so much! I missed making them too-glad to be back!
Omg?? You’re back! Thought you vanished for good lmao.
I’m still here! Just needed a (very) long break. Thanks for sticking around!
She's a great actress 🎉
Her being robbed for this performance is absolutely criminal
Welcome back😘
Thank you! 😘 It’s great to be back!
Yup, that was one hell of a film! Angela Basset was fantastic in the role of Tina. When the film was sent out in limited release, I wondered to myself what the hell was wrong with the people in Hollywood.
Angela Bassett is the best
The first time I watched this movie I was probably 6. To this day I haven’t seen a better biopic. That Oscar was deserved but she was just too talented.
Getting Tina's approval is more than any Oscar win
