After watching this I researched Ike's career. His work as a producer and songwriter is very impressive, his influence is understated. His early life would make a fascinating movie or series. @@kiara198923 we are entitled to look back on situations that caused us pain and made us grow, it doesn't mean we still have an attachment. That man in the comments is a clown. Good on you for moving on.
He didn't get a raw deal. Like many men , he led with ego. That was his downfall. Unfortunately, hurt people can hurt people. I hope his soul is at rest.
She helped make his a name, but he made her a singer and standout. Remember, he was the choreographer, composer and musician. Not Ms. Mae... That's balance.
He got a raw deal? Wow I would have to say Tina made him more famous and she took so much abuse and other terrible things he did to her that I am surprised she made it through without major depression and many suicide attempts! She adopted his children and took them on without any doubt Tina is the hero of this story of triumph!!!
Since understanding how much childhood trauma shapes your adult life - hearing that Ike Turner was sexually abused from the age of 6 by 3 grown woman shows me he was angry at all woman from that young age. He made sure all woman suffered because in his little 6 year old mind, all woman were predators and out to get him. He had a “get them before they get me” mentality. This is why it is SO important to protect and love your children at all costs. Their future depends on it
Being sexually abused so young twisted his perception on sex. When Ike talks about being preyed on by grown women in his book, he said he wasn't traumatized. "That's probably why every relationship I was in was surrounded by sex. Sex was power to me," he said. I don't think he had the mentality to make all women suffer. A majority of his defenders are women he helped. He hired a lot of women and most say they never witnessed any violence from him. However, he was self admittedly selfish when it came to his needs in a relationship and he expressed remorse later in his life.
Tina was gorgeous I mean she was so beautiful i feel like her beauty was so underrated I’m so intrigued by how stunning she was && she had very nice skin teeth nice smile amazing facial structure
Amazing facial features ? U sound like a blackwoman who is quick to size up a blackperson based on her looks more than on the nature of her soul and heart
Trauma in the first years of life can permanently alter the brain. This is a fact. His actions are inexcusable but we should also seek to understand what causes people to behave the way they do.
I was 15 years old, when I saw Ike and Tina Turner at Skatland in the San Fernando Valley. It was a awesome act. Tina carried the hole show. Ike was a common drummer, nothing exceptional. Tina could perform with anyone and always carrie the show. She shined all by herself. It was no surprise when she decided to go solo. That was pretty much expected from anyone with unique talent. Ike was never in her league. It's wonderful to witness exceptional talent succeed. Yey! For Tina 👏
Ike played guitar. Tina was a great performer. Ike built the show around her. She was the show but Ike put it all together down to creating her stage name. He wrote, produced and arranged most of their songs and he was the bandleader. Tina wanted to be in his band for a reason.
Let's be clear there would have not been a tina without a ike you don't know what you're talking about your getting all emotionally involved as if it was your situation or if u was actually there So jut stop it don't do that Ike put the show together he said XYZ and that's how it went and they were successful doing it So let's not discredit the men okay u doing very much for no reason
I’m so flabbergasted by people in these comments saying “we don’t know for sure that Ike physically abused Tina”, the man himself admitted to laying hands on her. I’m sure every villain has an origin story, like this documentary presented about Ike but it doesn’t absolve him from what he did.

Keith Richards talks about teaching Ike his style of playing in open G. Keith said it was amazing how quickly Ike picked up on the technique which took Keith a long time to develop. This bio-doc was very informative. Thanks for the post!
I watched that interview. In part 1, which was now mysteriously disappeared, Keith told a story about Ike and Tina. He heard them fighting in their dressing room. He looked out into the hallway and Tina emerged looking pristine and Ike was the one who looked battered! People have a perception of Tina being a passive woman who didn't fight but Keith said she wasn't someone to mess with. There is also an interview of Judge Joe Brown talking about the violence he witness Tina inflict.
Redd Foxx was open about his cocaine addiction and Elvis Presley reportedly used liquid cocaine. Ike and Tina had a residency at the International Hotel with Redd Foxx and Elvis in 1969. It's possible that's when they introduced Ike to cocaine. When Elvis was still a truck driver, her used to sneak into black clubs in West Memphis to watch Ike play piano. Ike said many years later Elvis approached him at the International Hotel and asked if he remembered him. That's when he realized he was the white boy who used to watch him play.

I loved Tina and Ike together!!! She promised Ike she would never leave him. But that last fight in the car, in Texas, she had enough. She done what she had to do. Both Tina and Ike are very talented.
I always tell people Ike Turner started Rock&Roll. Born and raised in Mississippi just 10 minutes from his hometown Clarksdale we had to take Mississippi studies in school and do black history reports on black people from Mississippi and I did mine on him. He might've not been the best husband but he definitely left his mark on the industry
Crazy how he went through all of that as a child. And he couldn’t talk to anyone and it projected in his relationship with her . Undoubtedly he loved her and they had great chemistry off stage. But it just hurts to know what happened on both ends the man was a Genius fr fr
But if he “loved” her, he wouldn’t have tried to hurt her. She said she tried to commit suicide a couple times during their marriage. An interviewer asked him why he thinks Tina tried to take her own life so many times & he said “he didn’t know” 😳 so you mean to tell me you have no idea why the person you “love” tried to kill themselves. Doesn’t sound like love to me, but that’s just my opinion
Ike was nothing short of a phenom. Among musicians he's always been revered as one of the greatest. He was a pioneer, but unfortunately that's been lost on the public.
I was treated badly by parents who should have known better. My grandmother drank; she was also abusive to us. My father left after my folks bitterly divorced. I did not become a criminal. I turned my anger inward, drinking and not taking care of myself, for years. But I managed to turn it around. I am 74, and look back with sadness on things I missed out on. But I have a happy marriage, and a full, rich life. I am no victim. Only, of my own past stupidity, I guess. I blame no one. Only me, for not making changes.
I appreciate this documentary and I respect Ike’s genius. The documentary was mostly focused on Ike’s talent and his own personal trauma and downfalls. Definitely necessary to hear about his life and pursuit of happiness. I believe he severely abused Tina. Even if Hollywood embellished certain aspects, we know he was a brutal husband and drug addict. People who try to blame Tina for the abuse she suffered are sick in the head. No human is completely evil or good, and in that way neither was Ike. But they say you know them by the fruit they bear. Look at how both their lives ended and it tells you all you need to know.
Sometimes you dont completely recover from a murdered parent, multiple childhood rapes, and growing up in the midst of vicious racism that could have you killed every single day. You don't always 100% recover from those things to become a perfectly functioning human being later and that's just the way it is. Im shocked he made what he did of himself as is ya know. People aren't perfect. Tina is sooo beautiful. What a queen.
He should have told her does things tho maybe there relationship would have been different if he just opened up with what he went thru when he was a child
@@lifeinsights7695 therapy doesn't always work. In fact, MOST of the time it does not work. Especially for all the issues Ike had to overcome. Nice of you to sit on your high horse never probably having had to go through ANY of the issues he did and say, "he should've got therapy". They're therapists not magicians. There's only so much they can do. Therapy didn't help me with ANY of my issues and I went to several different therapist for 18 YEARS. It did not help one single thing and my issues were just a drop in the bucket compared to Ike's.
I agree. Childhood trauma and abuse is very difficult to overcome as demonstrated by our prisins full of men and women who were abused and traumatized as young people. 80 percent of female hard drug addicted prostitutes were sexually abused as youngsters. Unless you've had this happen to you as a youngster, you really shouldn't be passing judgement. Nevertheless it's a reason for negative adult behavior that hurts others, but not an excuse. People still need to protect themselves from harm some of these harmed folks perpetuate to others. She helped make his a name, but he made her a singer and standout. Remember, he was the choreographer, composer and musician. Not Ms. Mae... That's balance.

Agreed

Childhood trauma does not justify being abusive towards other people.
It's not an excuse, but it could be a reason.
Trauma in the first years of life can permanently alter the brain. This is a fact. His actions are inexcusable but we should also seek to understand what causes people to behave the way they do.
Thank God Tina ran away. I was abused and left too. I can relate. She was so strong. Im glad she found happiness

Sister Rosetta Tharpe started rock and roll in the 1940s way before Ike
Actually Jimmy Hendricks did
They were never married. Ike was married to several women. Was still married when Tina was pregnant by him.
Do you ever visit Clarksdale?
Ike and Tina did get married.
And then divorced, in the 70s.
I'm glad to hear some peoples from my hometown of Mississippi who made it out thats a good thing

Tina Turner was & “is” a legend! I so agree with you!
not as a musician that's for sure
Hmmmm, Tina was ok, i think she got more love for the sympathy for the abuse she experience from Ike than her actual talent
Yes but you take therapy session to seek help if not you will pay for the trauma
I do believe everyone, prisoners too, should be treated humanely, respectfully and compassionately. 16:18

But she has to forgive herself and him. They are both victims of the times, drugs and abuse. I'm glad he was able to be ashamed at the end. I hope he made peace with himself. I hope Tina does as well.
Perfect statement 🥰
