@epik_gaming9824 me when people don't understand that you can care about multiple things at a time (and that taking care of a fish is easier to do individually than fixing something as big as the foster care system)
I was at a pet store 4 or 5 months ago and this oranda was absolutely covered with ich amongest other problems.. he literally looked lifeless in the tank and the store owners even said “we’re gonna trash those, we just haven’t got them out yet”.. so I was like, well, if your just gonna throw them away, can I take this guy home and see if I can help restore him.. he was like “ill let you buy him for half price”.. even tho they had just told me they were going in the garbage… lol. Anyway.. I bought the dude, treated him and he’s still going strong today.. in fact, he’s the most feisty fancy I own.
You tried and that's what matters. You gave the guy a good time before he went. You're a good man for that. And with any luck, his friends will live on and be very happy in their new home. He will live on.
The way I am with bettas is the way you are with goldfish. I just purchased a CT/VT mutt with a crooked face and gills from a pet store, the other one I have I got emaciated, full of parasites, fins rotting off, and grey, and he’s now a blue marble feathertail, absolutely stunning. It warms my heart to see other people who take in these sweet babies to give them a good life. It’s impossible to save all of them, thank you for doing what you can.
Honestly, it's possible that's what killed it. Fish can get used to dirty water and a bad environment, so when you put them in clean water they just can't handle it.
I have 19 fancies at the moment. Two are successful rehabs. One has 1 eye and gill curl. The other I got very emaciated and diseased when he was tiny - one more night in a pet store and he wouldn't have made it. A few months in a hospital tank and lots of treatments and he pulled through and is one of my happiest goldies. I also have two with chronic swim bladder issues in a separate low flow tank. One can't stay upright for long and scoots around on her side. She gets therapy twice a day to increase muscle strength. The other has inflated anterior s.b. like Mushroom. He gets massage twice a day and that relieves it a bit. I've also had some non successful rehabs - sometimes they're just too sick to pull through.
I know you probably know this, but you didn't fail whatsoever with him... the poor guy was just too far gone. Thank you for caring for these sweet babies and doing the absolute best you can. Fingers crossed for the other fish here! Rescue and rehabilitation is such a painful process, sometimes, for both you and the fish. I've done lots of betta fish rescues through the years and what counts is that you're trying and you're qualified to do so. They have the best possible chance with you over virtually anyone else. Once again, thank you. PS. I didn't see any mention of whether or not you purchased the fish for full price, though I may have missed it. If you haven't done so already and decide to do this again, I would highly recommend asking for a heavy discount on any non-feeder fish species. Point out every problem they have and try to get the price as low as possible. There's a balance with being firm and polite with employees - as of course it's rarely ever their fault - but animals and their well-being is the one place where putting up a decent stink in a retail store feels justified. Many stores will sell a fish at a significantly discounted price over making no money at all thanks to a fish's death.
Luke just a bit of advice, the osmotic shock of being put into completely different aquarium water was probably too much for the mushroom fish in his condition, which is why he conked out as soon as you put him from the bag into the tank. With sick fish it's best to drip acclimate, not just temperature acclimate. Healthy fish deal better with being plonked into different water quality, even though that's not ideal.
@@bec2549 You both are saying different things. He's saying that he was acclimating him in the bag beforehand and then dead when taken out. You say he was breathing before taken out of the bag which doesn't look to be the case in the immediate moment before I don't see what the original comment is saying as he looked pretty lifeless before being taken out

*So the best thing to do for fishes like the big goldfish with swim-bladder is to not acclimatise them to new temperatures or introducing them to QT tank. You can add the airstone to the bag directly and add in some salt with methlyn blue. This cause less stress due to temp fluctuation and might just save them. Once slightly stable 3/4 hours later you can start adding water from the tank to the bag one cup at a time. This one was far too gone though.*

I just started watching it I hope it didn’t die. Edit: (sorry for spoiling lol) I’m so sad this little fella didn’t make it :( it was beautiful thank you for trying to save it.
When I worked at a pet store, I was basically in charge of fish for several years. I did all I could to keep more fish alive, but when all the systems are linked and you only have so much time to dedicate to the fish, you can feel pretty powerless. If we had a fish that wasn't gonna make it if it stayed with us, I'd just write it off as dead and give it away. We just didn't have the resources, only 1 quarantine tank (that i bought) and 2 separate feature-only tanks with very specific parameters. Nothing feels worse than knowing how to save a fish, but not having the ability to. Our city's water quality would change drastically season-to-season, and it was a full-time job just trying to keep the water at a normal kH level.
I do this all the time. Trying to save goldfish I go to pet stores and save the most sickly fish and probably 3/4 of them die but it’s worth it. I even have a poor goldfish with only one eye he’s doing extremely well. Thank you for sharing and extra new ideas, and how to save these poor little creatures.
Thank you for trying to rescue but remember...Like Luke said in the video, you are promoting this practice if you are buying the sick fish. It sucks but NOT buying the fish is whats best in the long run. There is lots of tips on what to do, but generally the best is to take an photo and put it in a bad review.
Dont do that, you are basically giving them more money to buy and sell more sick fish. If you really want to save them you can ask if they can give them for free but spending money like this is completely useless if not damaging
@@suemucek7844 The issue is that by saving that one light, you are supporting the practice of snuffing out many more lights. Life is precious, but if buying those sick fish causes the store that's unequipped to take care of them to buy more goldfish, a ton of which will die *before* even making it on display, you are snuffing out a lot more lights than you are saving.
If he could have survived the acclimating process, I would have tried a smaller hospital tank with a higher salt content. I've had goldies bounce back from death's door doing that. Also, instead of waiting to acclimate, you could measure the temp of the bag water, then add hot or cold water to the tank to bring it within a degree or two.

Poor little mushroom goldfish, but seeing his state i think there was little that could be done for him. Wish the best for the others, i love the little common gold fish his coloring is really interesting, i hope he will stay like that.
Poor Goomba (that’s what I named him for myself)… You’re so sweet to these fishes and I’m sorry Goomba missed out on the love and care you would have given him…
Even though this was a fail, this whole video is perfect for demonstrating how messy the aquarium trade can be. It would be amazing to be able to revive these guys, then find them good homes if you don't wanna keep them forever (I've seen people revive fish when they had almost no experience in them, just to find them a better home). I don't understand why most aquarium pet stores don't let people take home obvious sick fish for free, the employees are going to let them die and throw them out anyway, which means they are not getting money. Thank you for trying your best for these guys. ❤🐟
One of the worst local pet stores had huge common goldfish , they had huge cuts , one had a missing gill cover and all were gasping for air at the top, I doubt any that stayed there survived . Sadly I don’t have goldfish and couldn’t do anything. There was a pet store near with a huge tank for goldfish that could have been given them but sadly the worst one got them ( all their fish are disease ridden and skinny )
You inspired me so much that I went out and bought a baby red cap oranda with a deformed fin. I made sure that the rest of the fish at this store were looking good and I ended up getting him and just brought him home and he is acclimating right now!
Kind of looks like the big guy was breathing heavy and just ran through the oxygen that was available in the bag. It was a big fish and they suck up that oxygen fast. Had a couple close calls with some Koi myself.
Does the methylene blue stain the aquarium sealant blue? Sorry that pretty fish didn't make it😞 Someone invested time and care for him to grow so well developed. Very sad.
mushroom was a big guy who knows how long he had lived in such poor conditions. i am sorry you had a bad experience with humans. and luke your my hero. people may say ah shush its just a fish. but a life is a life and mushroom couldent have had a more respectful end.
Sweetest guy! I saw some for sale at my local petco and they had ich and no one was treating them and you could see it all over them! They need better care!!
Luke With those feeder goldfish you’ll eventually need a pond Of at least 250 gallons because those feeder goldfish grow very big. A lot of people say 12 inches but that’s only in aquariums. In ponds they can get to 18-24”. Good luck with your goldfish
I went to Petco to get toys for my parrots and I got sidetracked looking at the fish. There were over a dozen dead fish in one. I feel that’s just wrong..
You didn't fail at all. You did the best you could and offered the lil guy a chance to get better even it didnt last for long. I'm sure the rest of the goldfish will get ten times better in your care and heal very quickly. It's great that you gave them a better life 💫
I’d like to say, the rule of not supporting a store bc they don’t take care of their fish well, applies to any other animal they have. If they are known for not treating the animals well, do your best not to support them and give them more money to replace the animal you are looking to purchase. No hate, just educating. Thank you Luke for doing something I want to do but can’t due to lack of funds
Rip poor little nugget, he probably didn't have the best fish life but in his final moments he was given a chance for something better from a good man. He wasn't alone, he was saved, and finally given care, may he be put to rest in a painless after life... 🕊️
I once saved a mutated golden wonder killie fish from a petstore. His tank mates seemed perfectly healthy, but he was thin, had tattered up fins, and anytime he tried to come out from behind this one rock to try and get a look at the human staring into the tank, the others would attack him, so I figured the issue wasn't actual illness or poor housing, it was bullying from the other fish. I assume the reason for the bullying was because he wasn't remotely yellow. He was a cooler pale shade of grey, with darker grey horizontal stripes, and eventually developed some iridescent green and markings. Very pretty, but very different from the others. I knew absolutely nothing about killie fish, but I felt sorry for him, and he seemed like a friendly and very curious little guy since he trying to look at me even though the others kept attacking him, so I didn't want to just leave him there. So he got put in my community tank, which was mostly populated by female bettas (I have some tests I conduct on bettas to try and estimate their aggression levels, and the females are significantly less aggressive to others of their kind than the males, so I rarely had issues with them being in the same tank) a trio of mollies (a male and female pair of dalmatian mollies and a female creamsicle, who also had appearance related bullying since she was a darker, less orange shade of yellow; she wasn't very social but the other two were inseparable to the point where one would jump into a net if you caught the other,) a pair of platies, and a pair of corydoras. He recovered surprisingly quickly, and was a super friendly fish who always greeted people who approached the tank. I did sit down and research his species after bringing him home, and was surprised to find out that they're known for being aggressive towards smaller fish since Stripes only exhibited aggressive behavior twice - once when a very small, young betta nipped his tail and he chased her around for a while (he could have caught and likely eaten her if he wanted to, but he didn't, so I think he was just mad about the tail biting.) The other time he acted aggressively was after put this male silver sailfin molly in the tank, and he managed to get into three fights with separate fish (including Stripes) within the first few hours of entering the tank, and was found dead the next morning, presumably because he got himself murdered. Unfortunately my mom put a new betta in the tank without quarantining her, and caused an outbreak of cotton disease which killed most my fish including Stripes before the medicine I ordered to treat it came in the mail (checked 5 different petstores in my area, but all they had was ginko extract - which I bought and used in an attempt to buy time for the better medicine to come in...)
Idon’t care what anyone else says, I’m calling the poor fish who sadly had died “Lil Mushroom” because he looks like one, and looks like a baby cuz he’s so cute,
I don't know if this is just a rare instance but my local Petco well I don't do say it's about a 30-minute drive away but anyway they seem to treat their first pretty damn well all the employees being passionate about what they're doing and seem to know what they're talking about

Even though he died, I think you did a pretty good job reviving him.
Thank you for the rescue video! I was really hoping you’d make a video like this and it’s great to see this.
Poor Goomba (that’s what I named him for myself)… You’re so sweet to these fishes and I’m sorry Goomba missed out on the love and care you would have given him…
Well luke, atleast you tried and I hope you get to rescue the other fish, but RIP big wen dude

At least he had the best human possible in the end. You did good, Luke.
I don't know how I'm this early...
Edit: that second fish is honestly beautiful very sad that he wasn't taken care of 😔
You inspired me so much that I went out and bought a baby red cap oranda with a deformed fin.
The beard mic gives me so much joy
Does the methylene blue stain the aquarium sealant blue?
Sorry that pretty fish didn't make it😞
Someone invested time and care for him to grow so well developed. Very sad.
mushroom was a big guy who knows how long he had lived in such poor conditions. i am sorry you had a bad experience with humans. and luke your my hero. people may say ah shush its just a fish. but a life is a life and mushroom couldent have had a more respectful end.
Luke, you are a great man. Theodore will be up in heaven waiting to say thank you.
He never said his name-

Sweetest guy!
I saw some for sale at my local petco and they had ich and no one was treating them and you could see it all over them! They need better care!!
i love red caps, i had like 11 in a pond it was crazy!
Orandas are my favorite goldfish. I love their fins.
The red caps are super cute too because of their red wen.
"I won't be giving the names of any of the pet stores I'm going to in this video"
The title literally be "I tried to save a Petco fish!"
HEY! At least you did your best to help him
“I just thought he’s adorable” awww
He didn't look in great shape in the beginning. Luke, you did an exceptional job in trying to save him, I truly mean it. RIP.
Can’t wait for the updates! I sure we’ll see a huge glow-up for the fish that survive.
R.I.P little guy, Luke keep up the good content. We hope goldfish and betas get attention one day
Poor guy. Glad you helped these poor fish the best you could
Thank you Luke for trying to save that big guy 🥺
Luke With those feeder goldfish you’ll eventually need a pond Of at least 250 gallons because those feeder goldfish grow very big. A lot of people say 12 inches but that’s only in aquariums. In ponds they can get to 18-24”. Good luck with your goldfish
For one feeder goldfish put him in the 180 gallon
I went to Petco to get toys for my parrots and I got sidetracked looking at the fish. There were over a dozen dead fish in one. I feel that’s just wrong..
So sad. Thank you for trying Luke. ❤️🧡
You didn't fail at all. You did the best you could and offered the lil guy a chance to get better even it didnt last for long. I'm sure the rest of the goldfish will get ten times better in your care and heal very quickly. It's great that you gave them a better life 💫
I at least want to know where you got the fancy fish I want one but don’t know where to get one I looked at yours but none where in stock
You are such a kind man with a kind heart❤️
That’s so sad…you tried, and you’re a great goldfish dad. 😔🙏💔
Creating a sickness soup by mixing fish with all kinds of diseases into the same tank
R.I.P. You have a kind heart Luke. Thank you for trying
Your a good man dude, may mushroom rest is peace. 😞
Dude literally said. Nah I don’t want to be in the tank.
Poor guy. He clearly wasn't in the best of health when you got him but it was nice that you wanted to at least give him a chance before he passed on.
Rip poor little nugget, he probably didn't have the best fish life but in his final moments he was given a chance for something better from a good man. He wasn't alone, he was saved, and finally given care, may he be put to rest in a painless after life... 🕊️
This was so sad but atleast he taught us somthing new about helping ill or he atleast
Taught me somthing new god bless you luke you did somthing good
I'm sorry for our little mushy friend, but red cap is cute I hope he can thrive
Damn sucks he couldn’t make it to the quarantine tank… really does
I once saved a mutated golden wonder killie fish from a petstore.
Luke out here providing universal healthcare to these goldfish
Idon’t care what anyone else says, I’m calling the poor fish who sadly had died “Lil Mushroom” because he looks like one, and looks like a baby cuz he’s so cute,
Luke: I will not be giving the names or locations of the stores
3:10: 😮
Luke I love your videos I finally got my lion head ranchu!
The acclimation put the sick fish out of his misery.
I have red caps and I am so happy you got to get the same joy
Big company business dont care for their animals. So sad they were so hurt. I hope they swim better in heaven
As sad as it is was probably for the best. That little dude had a lot going on with him.
I don't know if this is just a rare instance but my local Petco well I don't do say it's about a 30-minute drive away but anyway they seem to treat their first pretty damn well all the employees being passionate about what they're doing and seem to know what they're talking about
PetSmart on the other hand is a different story.....
You did your best hun. That's all anyone can ask.
That goldfish looked like he was bullied and beat up.
Poor little nugget. At least you get to take care of him in his last moments. He's basically in a fish hospital bed and taken care of. 💔
At leat big mushroom will have a peacfull life in fish heaven. RIP big mushroom.
