    In 2004 I saw a pederson device for sale. Out of my 35+ years of collecting militaria it was the only one I've seen for sale in person. It was the rifle, device, magazines, magazine bag and tools. $80,000 in 2003. To say they are rare is an understatement. But side note, the magazine bags still show up from time to time for not to expensive.

    During the Rhodesian Bush War, many unorthodox weapons were developed. The Bren in 7.62x51 had modified FAL mags welded together to make 35rd mags, The Rhoedesian SAS modified a Hispano 20mm auto cannon to be light enough to carry in a small helicopter and pushed on a specially-made bipod with wheels through the jungle to overlook a bridge at the Zambian border. Farmers would often make a wide variety of slam-fire shotguns arranged in rows or circular pinwheels around their vehicles to defend against a roadside ambush. Most designs had a series of pipes on either side of the vehicle loaded with 12gauge shotgun shells. When the driver pulled a lever, the barrels (pointed upwards) would drop down to hit a firing pin and discharge to fend off an attack.
    Thats not even including the weapons modified for special forces. RPDs with chopped barrels, suppressed AM-180s, or AKMs with suppressors and subsonic ammo. One AK was heavily customized to include a variety of built-in survival features like a .22 flare launcher in a folding stock, a compass in the hand guard, and illuminated night sights, and a few other features.

    The Pedersen device was a brilliant feat of engineering. The Rifles were ultimately sold as surplus, though they still were kept in service until the 1903 and 1903A3s were completely retired from service. They are safe to use as they aren't low serial numbers. The devices themselves were mostly gathered up and destroyed. Few examples survived, I've seen one for sale at a gun show.
    I don't believe it was necessary to remove the standard rifle rounds from the rifle regular magazine since the device would take the space of the regular bolt and wouldn't be feeding rounds from it. The device also filled in the chamber so it's impossible to feed both cartridges at the same time. There was also a modified 1917 Enfield rifle that had its own Pedersen device made, but they're about as rare as hens teeth

    • @tenofprime
      @tenofprime ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct, you can leave rounds loaded in the chamber. All the device does is replace the bolt.

    • @paulbeck6410
      @paulbeck6410 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There was also a version for the Mosin Nagant. There was one remaining of the prototypes built. I had 900+ rounds of Pederson device ammo, but stupidly traded it off. The 1968 Gun Digest has an excellent article if you can find a copy.

    Could've the Pedersen Device made an impact on the battlefield? Beside the really awkward magazine on the side, being able to fire semi-auto with lighter rounds sounds really ahead of its time.

    • @SPARTANLuis067
      @SPARTANLuis067 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      I think Forgotten Weapons said it never worked very well, and for it to make a difference you'd have to supply tens or hundreds of thousands of troops, and to do that you gotta convince proto-boomer fudd generals that they need to swap out the old rifles they love and trust for a newfangled gun that barely works and shoots a way smaller casing. It's a tough sell to get thru all that mess so it would be hard to say if it would have made an impact.
      Not to mention around the same time, the MP18 and BAR were created, which are both far superior in terms of function and reliability, so in reality the army probably would have just focused on those two types of new weaponry instead of conversions.
      A good example in history is the .308 converted M1 Garands in the 60s. As soon as M14s were more readily available, all the converted M1s were dumped

    • @tenofprime
      @tenofprime ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The C&Rsenal video on them covers it well, basically it is a weapon that looks great on paper but would likely have faired poorly in real combat.

    • @StressmanFIN
      @StressmanFIN ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But the device requires a modified rifle to work properly.
      If it was just the bolt that was necessary, then maybe it could've made a bigger impact.

    • @jacobmccandles1767
      @jacobmccandles1767 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The device was a compromise wherenone was needed: a simplified Win. M1907 in .351 SL would have been cheap and easy to produce.
      A dedicated .32 APC carbine might have been just as easy to supply as Pedersons and Modified M1903s. Arriving at an enemy trench with a loaded semi-auto long gun woukd have been pretty hot.

    "Hey look buddy, I'm an engineer. That means I solve problems, not problems like "What is beauty?" Because that would fall within the purview of your conundrums of philosophy. I solve practical problems, for instance: how am I going to stop some mean mother Hubbard from tearing me a structurally superfluous be-hind? The answer, use a gun, and if that don't work... Use more gun. Take for instance this heavy caliber tripod mounted lil' old number designed by me, built by me, and you best hope... Not pointed at you."

    I know WWI planes were glorified balsa wood and canvas but it's so surprising they could be littered with bullets and be fine but an ejected bullet case could bring one down.

    • @Number1Irishlad

      It is crazy, canvas lined planes could easily take hits since the bullets would just tear through the canvas. Surprisingly, some of those types of planes were used to take on the Bismarck and managed survive a torpedo run and get a few hits on it, and make it back to the carrier safely. yet a damn shell casing in the engine could muck it all up

    That MULE stock is one of the dumbest ideas I have ever seen. Not only does it make your rifle even heavier, it also makes it slower to access your sidearm! I'd genuinely like to see the designer try to argue why it is so much better than all those pesky leg holsters we use now.

  • @tsarfox3462

    What I don't get is instead of mounting a bayonet on your pistol, why not just carry a knife? With a rifle a bayonet gives you more reach and essentially gives you a spear. On a pistol, it just seems like you get a knife that you can't use with as much versatility, plus extra weight that hinders your shooting.

    A very effective upgrade was developed in New Zealand to provide machine guns for use for local defense when nearly all of our aromatic weapons had been sent overseas for use by forces in action there. It was the Charlton machine gun which was a modified .303 Lee Enfield bolt action rifle which when fitted with bren gun magazines made for an effective if odd looking weapon. As they were locally produced with local resources they filled a very real need.

    The AUG A3 can be equipped with a special barrel shroud made by Corvus Defensio (I think its Corvus Defensio anyway) which allows the user to attach the same underbarrel grenade launcher as what can be equipped to the G36.
    Steyr Arms also makes an upgrade kit for the G36, and dubbed their version the G62. It replaces the polymer upper receiver with a metal one, an upgraded barrel is optional, and there are a few other things too.
    Steyr would also provide an optional "NATO" stock for the civilian version of the AUG which makes it able to accept STANAG magazines rather than its usual proprietary ones. And yet aftermarket magazines for either version are made by Magpul as well.
    Ratworx makes a metal sear to replace the plastic one for the civilian AUG to lighten the trigger.

    You know what the M.U.L.E. reminds me of? The Magpul FMG-9.
    The gimmick behind it was that it can be concealed by folding itself into a neat little, supposedly harmless box, and then unfolded into an SMG when in a combat zone. Only one problem: It was no more efficient or efficient than actually drawing a concealed pistol or some other compact SMG. Why would security personnel want to carry such an overly complex mechanism with them into battle when they can just as, if not more quickly draw their sidearm or compact weapon of their choice? It’s more practical that way.
    Fortunately, it never left the prototype stage, and was more of a proof of concept that magpul did to show everyone what cool stuff that they could do with their guns.
    And so, this weapon was banished to forever inhabit the servers of Modern Warfare 3, Rainbow Six: Siege, Payday 2, and the fields of Airsoft courses.

    The Pederson Device was a helluva good idea for it's time, but it was too novel to work and really overlooked the obvious: what was needed was a blowback carbine in an intermediate caliber deployed in vast numbers. Something similar to the later .30 Carbine... like a simplified Winchester M1907 in .351SL with 10 or 15 rd mags for instance.
