Oh! gosh I have just been pulling the flower head petals off. Thanks for very clear explanation, you are never too old to learn, 5 leaves, it couldn't be easier.
Oh yes Penelope it really is a simple process and it works!!! You will have a repeat of Roses again, they won’t be as abundant as the first set but definitely more 😍
Good morning Irene and thank you for your lovely message. And I’m so glad to have helped. I always do mine this way now, it really is the best way because the new stems which grow from 5 leaves (or 7 sometimes) are just much stronger so grow better roses. Of course the following flushes of blooms are never going to be quite so good as the first flush, so pleased I’ve helped. Happy weekend ♥️
I never really understood how to prune roses until I watched your video. Thank you so much for a very clear explanation. Wish I was as knowledgeable as you although I guess everyone has to start somewhere!
Oh thank you Trish. I am happy to say that new shoots have appeared where I made the cuts now so I will do an update probably in the July garden tour. Thank you for watching 😁
Hello there Joe and thank you so much, it really is the best way and I always do this. How lovely you’re helping your Mother in her garden too ♥️ happy Friday to you 😊
Hello there Michelle and I am just so pleased that I’ve helped you. It really is simple isn’t it, and once you know, you know! And you can treat every rose the same. So pleased 💜💚❤️
Thank you. I’m new to growing roses, and your video - out of the many I just watched to figure out how to prune, including an English head gardener video - was the most informative so far! Great explanation and thank you
Thank you SO much. A perfect and easy and informative video that is clear and showed me what to do. I am new to roses, this is my first year and I was freaking out when the shedding started in June. So I dead headed today having, like others I see, just been pulling the heads off. THANK YOU SO much.
Oh Karen I am so pleased I’ve helped you 😊 it’s so easy really. Give it a few weeks and you’ll have new roses again - they will never be as good as the first flush of roses you get, but you’ll definitely get new ones again. I’m so pleased to have helped! Wishing you a great week ♥️
Hi there Jenci and thanks so much for watching. I hope I’ve helped you. Pruning is really not as overwhelming as it seems 😊 good luck with your roses, mine should be blooming very soon now 💜🩵
Hi there Tina and thank you! I think lots of people are intimidated by the thought of pruning roses but it’s really very easy, and the reason you go down to 5 leaves is because the stems grown from that point will be extra thick and sturdy enough to grow strong new roses rather than on spindlier branches higher up! 💚🩵🩷
@@TheEnthusiasticGardener thank you so much. My mum has lots of roses so I’ll be able to help her. I have a standard rose so is it the same principle to prune that?
I’m so pleased I could help, and yes, exactly same for standards 🌹 but of course you’ve got to try and maintain the shape of those while you’re doing it, try and keep the cuts to a similar height all round 👍
Hats off! This is the best video! It was precise in detailed information that can be easily interpreted. The video aspect held on the subject long enough to actually see what is being explained. The explanation was so well done' I am feeling confident in my decision making of where and how. I have been a lifetime lover of roses and in my 60's. I bought my first rose bush yesterday. I still had questions before planting. This video empowered me to where I will plant it today and this rose bush will be well cared for, and my neighbors will enjoy the buds blooming because of what I learned from this video. Thank you very much!
Oh thank you so much Stephen, I’m so delighted to have helped you. Like anything, it really is simple when you know and now you can be confident of what to do. So pleased and thank you for taking the time to comment. Thank you so much and have a great weekend 💚
Thank you! I’m so glad if this has helped you because it really does work when you prune like this. And you’ll get a second flush of blooms too. Wishing you a happy weekend 🩷
Hi Graham, a five leaf set is where the stem is thick enough to support the next long stem bloom that will grow from it. A 3 leaf set is not as strong or thick. So cut at 5 so plant remains nice and strong and blooms should be better 😁
Thank you so much! I always prune my roses this way, down to 5 (or 7 if there’s 7) and those new stems which grow from there to form new rosebuds will be far stronger than if you had pruned only down to a weaker 3 leaf point. Thanks so much for watching and I hope you’re having a great weekend ♥️
Hello Roger and thank you! That would have been a good idea but I remember (this was 3 years ago now) thinking that this was the right time for pruning and if I wait another 3 weeks to add an update on to the end of that video of how they’d done, then I’d miss my slot of showing how to do it. I just tried to find an update on them (because I did do one) but it was in amongst a video on something else, and there are so many videos that I couldn’t find it 😆 I must say that this method does work, although the second flush of roses will never be quite as good as the first. But I’ve pruned mine again maybe a week or 10 days ago, so as soon as they re bloom I will make a point of showing it in a future video. Anyway, I do hope I’ve helped and wishing you a fabulous week ♥️
Hi I have a rose that's just coming to flower the first time in 4 years I took seed from my own rose BUT it came out a different colour so I name for the wife ( terena rose ) she happy thanks again for your time and consideration plus tips 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
That’s interesting. Could be you got the original wild rose that your Rose was grafted onto. Apparantly most roses are grafted onto a wild rose rootstock. Grafted rose bushes have a top variety of rose that typically is not as hardy when grown upon its own root system. So these roses are grafted onto a hardier rose bush rootstock. 😁
Well thank you for your kind comments Michael and I’m so pleased to have helped, I do this every time and it really is the best way! Thanks for joining me in my garden today and have a great week ♥️
This is the BEST video I've seen on how to prune/deadhead roses to encourage more blooms. Thank you!! Would this same technique apply if you wanted to cut fresh beautiful roses for a vase but still encourage new growth?
Jody I’m so delighted to have helped you and thanks for taking the time to say you enjoyed it. It really is the best way to prune and yes, if you want your roses as cut flowers, then cut them in exactly the same way, then you can remove some of the lower leaves on the stem before you put them in your vase of water 🌹 Hope all goes well and have a wonderful rest of the week ☺️💜🩵
Hello there and thanks for watching. The reason for cutting above a 5 leaf stem is just because this is where the cane is going to be strong enough to support the next long stem bloom that will grow from it. If you cut only down to say 3 leaves, you are higher up the stem and so that part is already going to be a thinner and weaker place for the new stem to grow from. So less lovely new buds. I hope that makes sense? I should have explained that in my video. Hope you’re having a great weekend ♥️
Thank u for that great tip about the direction of the next growth; never knew that 👌. Nice colour of roses; any chance of knowing what the rose plant called? Does it smell nice or just pretty?
Hi Reza, I’ve no idea what sort of rose it is - it is one of the very few plants in my garden that were already here when we moved in. That was 15 years ago so it’s at least that old. But it doesn’t have any fragrance at all! But it’s a beautiful colour 😁
Hi Melissa. Yes I would do that, even if it’s close. The idea is that a 5 leaf stem is going to be stronger than anything else, so it can hold a lovely new flower. This really works, I always do it now. Although you have to bear in mind that although you get more flowers, it’s never going to be as spectacular as the first lot were 🌹😍
Excellent info. Best video I have seen on this topic and believe me I have watched a lot of them. ONE QUESTION THAT STILL REMAINS? What if there is no 5 leaf option?
Hello and thank you so much, that’s so nice of you to say that. As for your question, most modern roses have 5, 7 or even 9 leaves because they are grafted roses (rose bushes that have a top variety of rose that typically is not as hardy when grown upon its own root system. So they are grafted onto a hardier rose bush rootstock). If yours only has 3 then perhaps it is an old fashioned variety I’m guessing and so of course you can do yours to 3. I hope that helps and have a very happy Sunday 😎💜
Brilliant! I'm housesitting for a friend a found your video extremely helpful. Cheers!
Hi Joseph, I’m so pleased to have helped! Don’t kill all your friend’s roses 🤣🤣🤣🥰
I love dead heading and pruning roses, I find it relaxing lol.. I think because it’s so easy!
Actually I do too! It is relaxing, you’re right, and good to know you’re doing the plant good too 😁
Hello there Adam, yes you could do that. Good idea and it’s still early enough for new shoots to grow ♥️
Wow brilliant... I knew the five but didn't know the direction. Thanks for this. Have a great sunny day ☀️✨
