My mother instructed me back in the fifties to always remove dead roses at the “five leaf” which I still do today. Thanks to your video I now know that there’s a reason behind it and not just some old family tradition that I follow for no other reason than that it always brings Mom to mind with a smile. Thanks :-)
Nancy Alywahby when dead heading a rose just look down the stem and you will see some branches of leaves that have just 3 leaves on them and still you will find some little stems or leaf branches that have five leafs on them and this is where you will cut off your dead rose :-) . My mother never told me why to do it that way but it must be right if Frazier Valley says to do it too so I’m glad I took her advice; moms can be pretty wise sometimes!

Growing up in Washington D.C., the yards on our lots within the city are *VERY* small (generally about 6x9 ft or smaller) and in the past it was typical to populate these limited spaces with rose bushes and hydrangeas. Every block becoming its own undulating sea of color during bloom times.. giving us all a great sense of pride in our community. Sadly, as a kid I paid very little attention to her toilings in the garden and now that it is mine I want to keep it beautiful and healthy, just as she did. Thank you again for all your much needed tips.

Again, the yards are very small in some cases and these ladies believe in perfection. So buying a mower for a 4ft yard isn't economical but the perfect 3 in grass length under the roses *will be* achieved at all costs. My Gram used wood ashes around her rose bushes and she only put it on them at night so none of the neighbors knew her "secret to rich green leaves".. I've now become a part of this wonderful tradition. One I would definitely call "hardcore" or I wouldn't be up this late with roses on my mind! 🤔😆
That's sad. My favorite past time with my grandma was in the garden. Hopefully, if you have kids in your life, you can make that a common activity with them.

This is my first year planting several rose bushes and I didn't like the unsightly shriveled roses after blooming so beautifully and I went around snipping them off. Little did I know, that was the right thing to do! 👍

We purchased a house with many rose bushes. I’ve gardened all my life, but not had roses and knew nothing about them. This video was an excellent teaching video to give me confidence that I can properly take care of my new garden.
Thanks so much for this. I'm really getting into gardening, due to being home during COVID pandemic. My sister had given me a small rose bush that is flourishing this year! I figured there would be a "right way" to deadhead the blooms; you explained it very well.
Mulch the plant generously, talk to it nicely, to keep the roots cool & moist but not wet. Add a little soluble fertiliser to the watering can to help it on its way. You have a lifetime of learning & pleasure ahead of you.

Yes! Best pruning advice from a real old school landscaper, whom learned me more about the craft at work, was indeed, "prune it just a thumbs up the first 5 leaf". Same goes for grafted roses. And other plants. I think I'm also gonna experiment with this on the Buddleya davidii. They can also bloom twice. Hydrangea macrophylla, won't bloom twice, because it only blooms on biennial wood. So you only prune the dead flowers. Except for hydrangea macrophylla 'Annabelle'. Annabelle blooms on annual wood and it endures agressive pruning each year. Sometimes, the more agressive the pruning, the bigger the flowers get. The only thing that misses in this video is that you have to watch for flowers on annual wood and flowers on biennial wood. Like this guy says, you're gonna have to experiment for yourself. Excellent video.

I planted Salvia in my garden for the first time this year, and they are all roughly at the same stage as yours. After watching this video, I now know how to prune/deadhead them, too. Nice!

I follow every tip you give, and our roses have never looked as good as they have before. I also dont follow inward or outward facing bud eyes either. Bc the rose bush does shoot anyway it wants really anyway. I agree with cutting like you do. I have some rose bushes that have over 50 flowers at any given time. Along with multiple buds getting ready to open. And it's a smaller type floribunda with that many flowers. Its gorgeous. Just want to thank you for all the info you put out.

Another very useful video. I deadhead most of my flowers to extend bloom time or at least make the area tidier. Like the tip about cutting flowers back early for time to recover and give fresh growth before a garden event. Thanks! The only reason I wouldn’t deadhead a rose is if it is near the end of the summer and it produces good rosehips for feeding the wildlife.🐧
True, rosehips can be an attractive red or orange color for winter interest. Also I heard that rosehips provided Vitamin C for the people of Great Britain during World War II. 🙂🌹

Natalie Dodson, Yes, I found that fact about rosehips and its role in proper nutrition during a time of need so inspiring. I got that information from the TV series Homefires about the role of the Women’s Institute in World War II. I think rosehips were also mentioned in the book Jambusters that the series was based on. 🍓

I just started growing roses 2 years ago and last year proved I did not know what I was doing because the whole year was a disaster, but I learned so much in this short video and should be able to fix most of my mistakes and have a beautiful rose garden going forward. I've watched quite a few videos about rose care and this was the best explained and demonstrated video I have seen yet.

I follow every tip you give, and our roses have never looked as good as they have before. I also dont follow inward or outward facing bud eyes either. Bc the rose bush does shoot anyway it wants really anyway. I agree with cutting like you do. I have some rose bushes that have over 50 flowers at any given time. Along with multiple buds getting ready to open. And it's a smaller type floribunda with that many flowers. Its gorgeous. Just want to thank you for all the info you put out.

Another very useful video. I deadhead most of my flowers to extend bloom time or at least make the area tidier. Like the tip about cutting flowers back early for time to recover and give fresh growth before a garden event. Thanks!
The only reason I wouldn’t deadhead a rose is if it is near the end of the summer and it produces good rosehips for feeding the wildlife.🐧
Thanks - and good point. You definitely have to consider the lost hips (even as ornamental value) as one of the costs of deadheading.
True, rosehips can be an attractive red or orange color for winter interest. Also I heard that rosehips provided Vitamin C for the people of Great Britain during World War II. 🙂🌹

Natalie Dodson, Yes, I found that fact about rosehips and its role in proper nutrition during a time of need so inspiring. I got that information from the TV series Homefires about the role of the Women’s Institute in World War II. I think rosehips were also mentioned in the book Jambusters that the series was based on. 🍓
