How to: Clean & replace T-MAP sensor Ford Duratec / Mazda L (Mondeo, Focus, Ranger, Mazda)

  • Simple DIY how to: Service or change the T-MAP (Temperature & Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor on a Ford Duratec HE or Mazda LF engine.
    Dirty or faulty MAP sensors can lead to rough idle and engine tune problems. They get dirty over time along with the rest of the insides of an intake manifold, and it's good practice to service them by just cleaning from time to time.
    Or if faulty, it will need replacing.
    Amazon links for replacement part - US: amzn.to/2bYan1y | UK: amzn.to/2c5gHaP
    You will need:
    - T20 torx drive bit and a small ratchet handle or other compact driver suitable for small confines
    - Flashlight
    - Brake clean or similar plastic-safe solvent for cleaning
    - Spanner to remove battery negative cable.
    (Using the above Amazon links will support my channel and is appreciated!)

    Dude, you were the only one I found that gave the location of this part accurately. And showed, live, how to remove and replace it even though it's soooooo difficult to get to and see. Thank you soooo much.!!! Good work. Saved me so much grief. and helped me service it faster.

      Woooow! This worked great on my Mondeo MK3 2.0 Duratec HE. I have cleaned sensor with EGR cleaner, but removed gasket on sensor first as it's quite agressive. After putting it back performance +50% on acceleration. Before my mondeo was like an old and heavy cow. Sensor was coveret with oily mud and dirt. Now my car runs like racing horse! Much thanks!

    Replaced the T-Map sensor on my 2006 Focus 1.8 Duratech and the dam fixing screw sheared inside the manifold .. had to glue it in place for a temp fix .. 2 pack plactic body glue did the trick ...

    It seems someone at Ford really hates people trying to clean their MAP sensors. Still, be glad you don't have the old Zetec SE engine - this placement of the MAP sensor is awkward, but it's still much better than on that Zetec. To be able to get to it there, you have to remove the accessory belt and alternator. The MAP sensor is hidden behind the manifold tubes and the screws are positioned at such angle that it's just impossible to get to it any other way.
    Very nice video, BTW.

      That sounds like far too much of an arseache. What I loved about the old blacktop Zetecs they put in the 1.8 and 2.0 Focuses (Focii?) was pretty much everything was easily accessible. Just about the only thing I had a small issue with in terms of access was the idle air control valve.

      yeah I'm the unlucky owner of one of those.. today I got myself a brand new T-Map sensor, a bluetooth dongle to clear the codes and off I went to replace the darn thing... after about 1 h of trying to get the belt back on I reconnect the battery , connect the OBD2 bluetooth dongle to an app , send the clear comand, check again and then start the engine.. it just starts and stalls right after..tried leaving the battery disconected for longer, turning the key without battery on in hopes for a capacitor discharge, shorted the leads .. nothing seems to reset the ECU. now I'm stuck having to put back the old MAP just to drive it to an electrician in hopes that his scanner actually clears the codes...

      As anybody can see, the tip of the MAP sensor was dirty, with a lot of oil deposits caused by the terrible (I'd say "shitty") design of the PCV system in all cars. In this case you did not notice any change because the MAP is the least dirty part, just remove the entire inlet manifold to find how dirty the inside is! The gunk and dirt in the manifold is even less than at the inlet ports in the cylinder head and valves. THAT DIRT really messes up idle quality and emissions in some cars.
      The ONLY way to cure the crud and dirt deposited in the inlet tract, is to install a oil vapors cooler followed by a properly built "Catch-Can", so that the PCV stream it cooled first to condense most oil vapors, then separate the oil mist in the Catch-Can.
      A Catch-Can alone will barely remove oil from the recirculation, as this stream is present as a vapor-mist mix, and sometimes visible oil droplets, dependong on the engine and RPM. Why do auto manufacturers still design their PCV systems so badly? Because they don't care the user will have higher tailpipe emissions and because it costs them pennies as designed, and finally, because they don't care lowering the effective Octane number (lube oil has a terribly LOW octane number, btw)
      To really do a proper job, the complete manifold must be removed and cleaned. Finally, Don't attempt to "clean" the inlet manifold with a spray can "lceaner", as you will end up removing ony some crud, but then that dirt is going to form hard deposits inside the combustion chamber, foul the sparkplugs, and more importantly, the O2 sensor and the expensive Cat converter!
      Do it properly OUTSIDE the engine. Amclaussen.

      Torx heads are usually pretty robust. And these are not torqued very tightly. Are you not able to get the bit into the head? Can you clean it out? Tap the bit into it (carefully) to get some bite? Maybe a few drops of penetrating oil around the screw.

    • @CraigsDIY
      @CraigsDIY  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I couldn't tell you, other than the driver socket is torx T20. For this reason it shouldn't be 'rounded off', or if it's been damaged by someone trying to mash a cross drive in there then it should still work if you are careful to engage the driver fully. Spray a little penetrating oil on it and try it when engine warm maybe. If you want to replace it, you would have to take it to a fasteners specialist and match the thread, ideally with a stainless steel version.

    it didn't start immediately cause that cleaner stuff (Isopropyl Alcohol) felt cold on the Air temp sensor thus ECM is programmed not to fire up the engine until the parameters of the ATS, ECT seem logical as a fail safe design, so once the Alcohol sucked inside the engine it received the proper/expected air temp it allowed the engine to run

    • @alfredomarquez9777
      @alfredomarquez9777 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      By the time the sensor is installed, ANY alcohol has been long evaporated... It is more related to the practice of DISCONNECTING the battery. In my VW vehicle, disconnecting the battery nor only erases the radio stations, but the partial odometer reading, and causes EXACTLY the same difficulty in restarting. It can be lessened by switching the sarting key several times WITHOUT reaching "start" (just cycle OFF-ON-Off-On-OFF- On and it usually helps reset the computer and get it ready for restarting sooner. Amclaussen.

      Great videos & audio, Craig. Invaluable these past few days trying to isolate lumpy idle and/or misfire on an '05 Mondeo. Have broken the fragile EVAP purge line near the main fuel injection connector. How is the rubber elbow joined to the manifold (your manifold video 5.47min)? Haven't been able to loosen it; looking to get a replacement.

    • @fraserdickson4722
      @fraserdickson4722 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply. Perhaps I misunderstood: isn't the collar depress on the brake booster hose? In my case it's the narrow EVAP line that you disconnected from the elbow, rather than elbow from manifold. In manifold video @ 17.22min (to right of flaps actuator plug) there appears to be no collar, just push on (same as valve end?), however, mine is stuff firm and hose won't release at elbow either.

    • @CraigsDIY
      @CraigsDIY  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry I jumped to conclusions. So you can see at 5.45 in the manifold video how I disconnect it, if yours is stuck at this joint then it's still a very simple join that a heat gun and some force would always work on. If you want to replace the rubber hose as well, that just goes down and in a few inches to a male connector on the manifold directly underneath the IACV. Again this will just pull off but may require a bit of encouragement. Much easier with manifold off the car of course. I would just leave it in place if it's not damaged.

    • @CraigsDIY
      @CraigsDIY  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Edit: you can see it (the hose) very clearly at 14.00, 14.54, etc (next to IACV)

    you seriously dont have to disconnect the battery to reset! The ecu keeps learning it can take a day or week but it will adapt the new values to run the engine optimal. Resetting will only learn it faster.

    Am I missing something? This is about the eighth video i have seen entitled CLEANING MAP which doesn't actually show how to clean a MAP sensor1 I have a P0106 MAP sensor problem. You show diagnosing MAF sensors, which is something completely different. (However many MAF sensors you clean)

      The sensor shown is a MAP not MAF sensor.

    Makes me laugh, that sensor is only £5-£8 and how much is a can of brake cleaner? Seems a lot of aggro for a throw away part! However, very good video though

    Brake Cleaner? Don't you love the internet? You can learn anything! And you won't know how wrong the information is!
