Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution Review // The Best 4X4 Ever Made

  • The 1997 Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution (~$40-50,000 USD) is the epitome of gnarly 90s style. Built to demolish the grueling long distance Dakar Rally, these rally-homologated SUVs are nothing short of legend. A 276 horsepower naturally aspirated V6 is shielded by twin hood scoops, Torsen differentials are used in both the front and rear, and long-travel independent suspension adorns every corner. Between the extremely successful rally heritage, and the undeniably attractive styling, there isn’t one un-cool thing about this SUV. Just don’t look up what Pajero means in Spanish… We hope you enjoy the episode. SUBSCRIBE!
A massive thank you to Ray for loaning us his pristine Pajero Evo and to Eclection Auto for connecting us.

The 6G74 was pretty advanced for the day. Like all of the “276 hp” engines of the day, the actual output was usually much higher, and the engines had a ton of tuning left in them. Turbo kits are readily available and power output can be pushed into the stratosphere. I’m curious how the actual Dakar versions were tuned.

Depends on what year, the regulations changed a lot. But Mitsubishi's 6G engines were incredibly tough. The 6G75 which is the 3.8 petrol in Gen 3 and 4 Pajeros regularly has been modified to 400hp+ and is a bulletproof design. A fun fact is that Mitsubishi entered in a few Dakar models a redesigned block from the 6G75 where it was run as a 3.0 V6 quad compound turbo diesel (yes QUAD). They were only allowed a tiny 19mm air restrictor on the intake yet even so it made 206kW and 520Nm of torque. Opened up it is estimated that it would easily have made over 400hp and 800-1000Nm from a 3.0 diesel in the early 2000s which is just mental.

Cool thing about that rear diff is the Gen 2 Pajero solid axle cars also used it. So, if they were equipped with the air locking differential you got to have a Torsen when unlocked and then could fully lock it up when you needed to. Also, you don't need to be in neutral to shift into 4H, you only have be below 100kph.

I lost it when an Adui S5 decided to kiss the front of it at about 15 mph. You can imagine how the S5 ended up. Still searching for an SUV that provided the enjoyment I had driving it. The, excuse my swearing in spanish 😁, Pajero is not an extremely rare car. The real Dakar version would be. So if someone who’s got the money would fancy an easy ride in mild dirt? No problem for me. Cutting the fenders, putting the big wheels on and go for some rock-crawling - that would be far beyond my limits.

Very underrated car. Unfortunately they no longer make such cars today. It's almost like car companies forgot how to make good simple utility cars. The EVO version is great for fun only. But If you want to go offroud you should get the standard version with solid rear axle and factory airlocker. 3.5V6 is strong motor. But Diesel is better for offroud if don't need to go fast. I bought one for my gold prospecting adventures for $3.5K SWB 3 door 2.5 TD manual. Permanently locked center diff and factory air locker in the back. It's surprisingly capable offroud. It has good factory steel protection plates under the engine and gearbox. Front suspension is adjustable. And the rear is very easy to lift with simple springs swap. Add some good MT tires and it goes everywhere. It's on par with modern 4 Runner or Bronco. But 10 times cheaper.😃
