I worked for the company that made the glass sunroof for Mazda for the first gen RX-7. From the factory it came with a painted steel panel. The glass top was available from the dealer as a Mazda-labeled replacement accessory. The company was Pacific T-Top in Huntington Beach, CA. We also added T-Tops to new Mustangs and Camaros/Firebirds, early-mid 80's.

The wing on the Pajero was actually functional. When it was driven offroad fast the wing created an airflow so the dust did not settled on the back window.
Thanks Jay and Doug. In defense of the rotary, Every RX7 2nd gens I have ever bought that had a blown engine had leaves, sticks, dirt, etc, clogging the space between the oil cooler and radiator, allowing the oil to cook and blow the seals.

It's has very classic lines. My Corvette C5 Z06 is similar in that it has a simple, classic silhouette. Neither will ever look old. It's easy for the Mazda, as the rotary engine is so compact. The 'Vette does it by mounting the engine as far back as possible for weight distribution, with the transaxle behind the driver.
Great to see Jay and Doug back doing a review again together. I grew up with that Rx7. I always wanted one. It was one of the coolest cars on the road back then. Thanks guys !!
This is what happens when two Italian real guys who are passionate get together. The best Leno episode ever!. Two out of three cars here I remember when they came out as a child n loved them. Thanks Jay n Doug
I have a friend who's first car when she went to college was a new first gen rx7 - her dad was a proud Japanese man who'd done well in America and wanted to flex that he could put his daughter in a cool new japanese car as well as send her to college. On top of that, they lived in Compton. I can think of few more badass moves for an old Japanese man in the hood.
Australia had a production based race series where anything was allowed only requirement was you had to use original wheel diameter and width. So you had rx3/4/7 with periphreal port 13b with 400HP racing on 14 inch wheels and brakes. Fun to watch.
OMG! I love RX-7's. I learned to drive with my mother's first gen 78' and 85'. I then owned my own 84' up until I moved to Montréal. I really miss these amazing vehicles. I bought my 84' in 2005 and it had an 80's cell phone in it still!
I used to drive one and what I loved was the no power steering on a sports car. It had amazing road feel and you could feel the road through the steering wheel. You had to do the work yourself.
Thanks for this guys! I’ve been singing the praises of the the FB RX7 for decades to deaf ears. The feeling, the analogue nature, the smooth revving engine, and it’s general overall spirit of fun.
It's fantastic how relaxed the conversation sounds. Jay seems to be able to help people to find the comfort zone pretty quickly. Doug also seems to be able to acclimate as well.
I had a new RX-7 it was great, I put my two young daughters in back and we’d go for a ride, they never wanted to go home they loved that car. A few years later I got a new Miata, totally different driving experience! Great car and a lot of fun but so different. Keep these drive reports coming Jay, so many enthusiasts love the variety.
Thank you, Mr. Leno for another great history lesson, I have been following Doug’s channel for years! Doug has a great story, starting out with auto trader, and then branching out to doing his own thing. He really cares about all things cars🙏🏽
Such a cool car and has to be one of the only cars driven/reviewed by both Jay and Doug! Great to see these two guys connecting over their passion for cars
I have a 1987 RX-7 with manual steering. Love it. Such an effortless car to drive. It is trivial to keep it within inches of where I want it in the lane.
It's really amazing to see of how Jay and Doug went from car enthusiasts to best friends. And BTW if they would keep the Mazda RX-7 as their favorite car, they are not planning to sell it.
If I remember it right, BMW used the 4 cylinder engine in the M3 because of the DTM regulations back then! They actually wanted to use a larger engine, but regulations limited the homologation M3 to 4 cylinders. Entertaining and fun video as always! Cheers
This rx-7 is going to go for more money just because Jay drove it. 😂 Gotta love Jay Leno. I watched him as a kid with my grandma at night. Now as an adult I'm rediscovering him for myself.
Great talk. Doug and Jay interact great together. re: the rotary engine, saw a video by Engineering Explained that described some new patents made by Mazda for it. Sounds like Mazda is looking to use it to charge batteries in a hybrid. Seems if it stays in its optimal RPM's then it can be very efficient, and the compact size and light weight is an asset when trying to combine both batteries and an ICE engine.
@@mbd501 it's a great video by Engineering Explained. He goes into detail why it was inefficient, and how this use of the rotary engine could work out very well.
wow! Doug is like the son Jay never had, and now it makes me realize Jays gene pool stops here, such a great person jay is and no child to carry on his great human character
Jay, you should take the EVO Pajero for a spin... The MIVEC engne is a grunty V6. They put 2 turbos on the same engine for the GTO. A blast to drive are the EVO Paj's...
I'm just buying one from wales. What are the odds of it being on Leno, lol.. Anything you know of that fails? Like plastic fans exploding on 2000s bmws
@seanatsnow I know nothing about BMW's. If you want a flash car get a V8 Lexus. As for the Evo Paj's, keep up with services & drive it like you stole it, lol. They are very over engineered. Unless you do something stupid, no problems.
My mom had the 1980 Rx7, which was the actual first generation. The one you have here is the second generation, which had subtle stylistic changes (wider trim running down the sides that actually looked best), new taillight array, nicer rear interior, etc.
@@phillipt9820 no it’s not. The trim is wider and the taillights are different. My father was bummed when this one was released because he wished he had waited to buy this one for mom. This one looks far better than the first generation.

The Pajero is actually a more successful rally vehicle than the Lancer Evo, Mitsubishi still holds the record for most Dakar wins. They were actually faster than the purpose built buggies that run in the Dakar which is very impressive for a vehicle in a production class.
Doug is a at best a sideshow to Jay. Doug's channel is suffering under it's own success and getting predictable and boring with all his templated stuff. He is becoming like the Verizon "can you hear me now?"-guy.
@@mrtopcat2 I understand what you are saying, but I think we all know if we tuned in and got a different Doug each time it would really limit the appeal. He has to go with consistnecy with his reviews, and then venture our more like he has with Hoovie and his friend that has been on.
Mazda has on sale, not in the USA yet, the MX-30 rotary engine hybrid. The engine only spins a generator, used as a range extender. The rotary works more efficiently running at a constant speed, with greater longevity. In a hybrid the engine will only be a part time engine, so little used, as the batteries will mainly be charged via a charger.

Definitely a flex, my mother had one too, Rj in Oz
Australia had a production based race series where anything was allowed only requirement was you had to use original wheel diameter and width. So you had rx3/4/7 with periphreal port 13b with 400HP racing on 14 inch wheels and brakes. Fun to watch.
I want to say only one thing. Jay, please, stay with us as long as possible 🙏
yh, he's getting old 😔
It’s honestly to see that he’s recovered from his accident.
@@RadicoolToons am sure he has got many many many miles left in him yet
My mother had one, she also had a FD, & her last car was a RX8, she had some cool cars all her life, Rj in Oz
@@rjnation5042 sorry bro but the RX-8 is a POS that’s nothing but trouble!
It's fantastic how relaxed the conversation sounds.
Jay seems to be able to help people to find the comfort zone pretty quickly. Doug also seems to be able to acclimate as well.
That's a key quality in being a talk show host. Getting people into their comfort zone
Jay keeps supporting the auto community. God bless you Jay!
Wholesome. Doug Demuro is incredible. So happy for this guy.
Nice to see you guys together. The top speed of the Dakar Mitsubishi in 1988 was supposedly around 200kph/ 125mph due to the areo aides.
You must be as old as my mother, she had one too, but she always had cool cars, Rj in Oz
Thank you, Mr. Leno for another great history lesson, I have been following Doug’s channel for years! Doug has a great story, starting out with auto trader, and then branching out to doing his own thing. He really cares about all things cars🙏🏽
It's great to see a dad spending time with his son like this. Can't wait for the sitcom.
the "Hey dad!' killed me🤣
Such a cool car and has to be one of the only cars driven/reviewed by both Jay and Doug! Great to see these two guys connecting over their passion for cars
Doug and Jay together, What a great thing.
I have a 1987 RX-7 with manual steering. Love it. Such an effortless car to drive. It is trivial to keep it within inches of where I want it in the lane.
I started watching Doug's channel when I was in high-school now I am 28 years old and I still watch his videos. Jay and Doug what a good duet
My first car was a '84 RX7. My last car was a '95 RX7. I'm amazed that Jay has never driven the FD RX7, incredible handling and performance.
I had an 82, 84, 89. Brought back memories watching this...
I had a '77.. it was a joy to drive
Jay has an incredible car collection, why would he bother his arse with something as humdrum and dreary as an RX7?
@@sandersson2813 Yeah, RX7's are SO DREARY!
Those two together are about as much car enthusiasm as you could ever get in one place.
i like how respectful and considered doug speak to Jay. like he is a mentor for him.
completely different to how he speaks to tyler from hoovies 😂
jay is indeed a level above everyone else hehe
Doug, So funny how comfortable you are with Jay, 2 great people doing what they love. Awesome to see, LOVE IT!!!
Cheers
You guys should do this combo every month. I wish you drove the Pajero. My childhood fantasy car.
Big same. First saw it at age 12 while watching Who Am I? and have been in love ever since.
Exactly 💯 out of the 3 cars they drive the wankel lol I mean c’mon you’ve got an E30 M3 and a pajero Evo sat right there WTF!!!
They started with a 2.3L engine in the DTM because of the weight and they could place it behind the front axle and it made 320 hp at 10,500 rpm.
WOW! Jay and Doug together in another video AGAIN? It's like Christmas.... in May!! Utterly fantastic!!
Love listening to Jay tell stories about the "old days"
So much respect between son and father, this is so lovely to see. Wonderful. Lovely conversation.
Great chemistry. And, I like the idea of bringing in three cars and letting Jay pick one to drive.
This rx-7 is going to go for more money just because Jay drove it. 😂 Gotta love Jay Leno. I watched him as a kid with my grandma at night. Now as an adult I'm rediscovering him for myself.
How about if Doug buys it for Jay?
@@jorgeb9715 Since Doug runs the site, I assume he's not allowed to bid on cars.
Like Father Like Son 2 👍🏾
🤣I can't believe Doug actually said "Hey Dad!" I almost spit out my drink. LMAO
Such a great video. Love the chemistry of the Jay and Doug. The real star was the RX7. Camera crew did a great job. Driving scenes were beautiful
Interesting. They were known for poor fuel economy for their size and power. That Mazda was EPA rated at 15 city, 21 highway.
@@mbd501 it's a great video by Engineering Explained. He goes into detail why it was inefficient, and how this use of the rotary engine could work out very well.
wow! Doug is like the son Jay never had, and now it makes me realize Jays gene pool stops here, such a great person jay is and no child to carry on his great human character
where can i sign up under jay?! 😅
What if you found out that Doug’s name was Douglas (Demuro) Muir Leno? Jay (James Douglas Muir Leno)
@@Hengel_Andrews It's his uncle I think
That Pajero Evolution 🥶🥶🥶
My mom had the 1980 Rx7, which was the actual first generation. The one you have here is the second generation, which had subtle stylistic changes (wider trim running down the sides that actually looked best), new taillight array, nicer rear interior, etc.
Wrong, this is still a first generation known as a series 3, in Japan, Australia and most of the world from 78-85 are all SA22C
@@phillipt9820 no it’s not. The trim is wider and the taillights are different. My father was bummed when this one was released because he wished he had waited to buy this one for mom. This one looks far better than the first generation.
@@Queensizemusicive had a 82 series 2 for 22 years which is as you describe, as i said they are all sa22c first gens in 81 the series 2 came out with updated rear, platic covered bumpers and a bunch of differences in different markets..regardless all same generation!
That Mitsubishi is so cool, I wish you did a whole episode about it. Never heard of it before.
Agreed, it's an absolute brute, t's so good looking
Legendary. Been in love with them ever since the equally awesome Jackie Chan movie Who Am I? introduced me to it and the sport of rally racing.
The Pajero is actually a more successful rally vehicle than the Lancer Evo, Mitsubishi still holds the record for most Dakar wins.
They were actually faster than the purpose built buggies that run in the Dakar which is very impressive for a vehicle in a production class.
Jay thank you for all the quality videos! My absolute favorite TH-cam channel of all time!!
Doug is my fav, Jay is a close second!
Very cool, love the first gen RX-7, thanks for sharing Jay and Doug.
I love that Jay does stuff with DeMuro and Hoovie. What a guy. A true car guy.
Neither of these guys ever stop smiling. It makes me smile too!
