    I watched the Italy v Korea game in Asia. I was pretty drunk by the end of it so my memory’s a bit hazy but about half the bar was Italians and I’ve never seen such angry people in my life. Learnt a lot of Italian swear words that day.

    I was there in 2002. The only good thing that came out of it was that it brought the country together supporting the Red Devils. Every game Korea played had decisions that went their way, allowing them to get through the top four. I remember, years later, Korea tried to play the phi al game against Australia using elbows and dangerous tackles. The Australian team took it as a green light to play the same way and five Koreans were stretched off the pitch.

    Not to mention that Moreno shouldnt have even officiated the italy - korea match in the first place. As we all know Moreno is from Ecuador and italy beat Ecuador 2-0 in the group stage at this wc so for him to be a referee here would be a conflict of interest.

    • @stefanomartello3786
      @stefanomartello3786 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Also, as far as I know, the FIFA just said something along the line of "he did his job and there were no irregularities" more or less, just before "randomly" kicking him out the list of referee at the first occasion (a someway suspicious match in his home country among low level teams, less than a year after the World Cup).
      Last time I checked this guy was arrested (like in 2010) for trafficking cocaine between Ecuador and USA.
      He also half-admitted to have received money but never said if it was from korean federation or from someone involved with bets or from someone else.
      2002 was a shitty edition of the World Cup.
      Italy had one of the most competitive teams back then.
      I would have greatly enjoyed the match Italy-Spain.

    • @BrianStorm742
      @BrianStorm742 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      That's a bit of a stretch, isn't it? How far does that logic go back? Should South Korea never get any German referees anymore because they beat them in 2018? Most refs are actually professionals and their careers depend on doing their job right. In most sports, it's completely normal for a ref to be from one of the competing countries, and it rarely leads to controversy.

    • @BrianStorm742
      @BrianStorm742 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      France beat Uruguay with an Argentine referee in 2018, and Croatia beat Denmark with that same referee, despite them having beaten Argentina previously. France then got a Uruguayan ref in the semis and still won.

      As said in my previous comment (which was already a reply so you may have missed it) he was corrupted. He took money for that. That's the only reason why he shouldn't have been put in lead of *any* match as a referee. He judged unfairly 3 or 4 matches during that World Cup.
      It's not a matter of who played against who before, which is not expected to be a problem among pro referees (even if in rare cases some of them seem to forget about it). It's a specific problem occourred whith that specific referee in that specific edition of the Championship.

    • @zackq8865
      @zackq8865 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BrianStorm742 I am not saying that it shouldn't be an issue, especially with professional legitimate refs but in order to completely eliminate and prevent all doubts from having a clean officiating match it's better to put a ref with no conflict of interest. If your theory is 100 percent fool proof like you claim then you would even see refs officiate matches between teams that are the nationality of one of the teams in action but as we all know we never see that, even if the refs are 100 percent clean and legitimate. For example, like putting an argentine ref in a match between Argentina and Germany. It's not about whether a ref is corrupt or not. It's about getting rid of all doubts and making sure there isn't any favoritism in play as that could also leave room for an appeal to be made.

Today in the team I am a fan of, Napoli, there is a very good Korean player, Kim Min jae. He is an honest and humble player who is doing very well in Napoli as a defender, despite having been with this team for less than two months. He has already scored 3 goals and as a defender he is really a wall. The fault in 2002 was, not of the players, but of the organizers, Fifa and Moreno

      I’m more worried about Iran and Saudi Arabia, the Muslim Powers Qatar is sandwiched in-between. If Soccer is to grow in the Middle East, those two Caliphates more than likely want their teams to do good.
      This raises the question for me, does England, The US, and Wales then have to have a blood bath for 2nd?
      There’s a lot that could happen, but I’m expecting the big population nations to go far along with either Iran or Saudi Arabia.
      It’s so unlikely Qatar will make themselves the “bad guys” rigging this. One of the other Muslim powers will likely be.
      My money is on Saudi Arabia shocking the group of Poland, Mexico, and Argentina. But Iran could also make it out. They’ve never done that.
      There’s no way Qatar actually does this for themselves. Except the money part.

    Italy - South Kora was a nasty game and the referee completely off the rails, maybe the worst referee of all world cup games and yes, possibly partisan
    But your representation is exaggerated, especially the part about bloodthirsty Koreans violently rough up these lovely little Italian schoolboys who were send to the world cup. Like Totti, Gattuso, Vieri and Materazzi.
    Within the first 25 minutes the Koreans already had Italian ellbows and arms on their faces, all purposefully and early on they started giving it back. Vieri alone had done plenty of action to be send off during the game easily.
    The referee overlooked obvious violent fouls on both sides, with the Koreans being more obvious, the Italians more devious.
    The bloody head-ingury of Coco you are showing is the result of getting the arms of one Korean and one team mate in it´s face, while he is pushing the Korean away. Obviously no harm intended.
    Also the penalty for Korea is well documented. The Panucci obviously grabs Seol and brings him to the ground. This is a give or take penalty. But the penalty situation of Totti too, because the korean actually played the ball and Totti is going into him for full contact. Maybe not a yellow card though...

      Totti's second yellow was a complete disgrace, since there was contact(after touching the ball), and definitely not a dive. And also in second half a Korean player deliberately elbows Del Piero in the face (while piero was pulling his shirt) in their own box, which should have been a red and a penalty. There was also another incident of penalty not given as far as I remember. And the wrongly called offside which was a goal. South Korea did play really well, but wouldn't have won it if not for the rigging.

      This is a classic example of “false equivalency”. The Italians have never been in a such a high fouling game, ever, before or after 2002. In a fixed game, the targeted team will often get bad calls in their favor, only to obscure the cheating. However, all of the critical calls were in South Korea’s favor. The 2002 Italian team would’ve easily beaten the 2006 World Cup champion team. South Korea wouldn’t have even made the World Cup if it wasn’t in their home.

      I'm sure he strongly suspected but is that the same as explicitly knowing and does it make him culpable? Is he going to go to his Korean boss and FIFA vice president and say "be honest with me, is everything above board?" Or does he just keep his head down and focus on doing his own job of preparing the team. Also, the players were being doped but I do believe the players were probably told they were normal, legitimate substances and AS A TEAM weren't aware of it. What individual players thought or suspected, who knows. But IMO, without explicit evidence, it has to be pinned on the offficals, not the team itself. I'm sure they would tell as few people as necessary of any illegal doings to prevent leaks and give plausible deniability to the team itself.

    I think it's ironic that Italians and Spanish are so upset about matchfixing. Italy has a very broad history of matchfixing in football in their domestic club league and Champions League. Juventus was found guilty of bribing referees and was set back to the third division. Their team doctor also admitted to giving them doping for the CL final of 1996.
    It is also common knowledge that dictator Franco asked UEFA for help to make Real Madrid champions of Europe multiple times.

The whole game was so physical between the two committing many fouls. One Korean guy even ended up bloodied in the head. The foul call against Totti at that time with no VAR could have gone either way but its pretty clear the home team will get that advantage. I mean reviewing other matches before this one... this ain't really nothing compared to other crazy calls that happened in the world cup. Remember Maradona's divine hand??? lol.
