Was the 2002 FIFA World Cup Fixed?

  • It has often been speculated particularly within the Italian press that there was foul play involved with their elimination from the 2002 FIFA World Cup at the hands of the co-hosts South Korea.
    Weighing up a very disreputable referee against the typical home overachievement that we are used to seeing at major international football tournaments, in another mini-documentary, HITC Sevens takes a look back at South Korea's success at the 2002 World Cup and evaluates the evidence in both directions.

    Byron Moreno was not given a heroe's welcome, Ecuador despites him because of the horrible performances on the 2002 World cup. As a matter of fact, the ecuadorian football culture still hates him. He left a bad reputation for ecuadorian referees. And, as of this moment, Conmebol (the intitution of football in latinamerica) still prefers other nations to represent them in official tournaments. We are trying to erase him from our footballing history, but we will not able to.

    I'm Irish & in my opinion the Ireland v Spain last 16 game was also fixed but Ireland was too incompetent to win.
    In that game Ireland was awarded 2 penalties. We scored the 2nd to take the game to ET.
    Spain also had 3 or 4 goals disallowed in 90mins. IIRC the 1st goal was disallowed goal was offside. The 2nd goal disallowed for offside was not offside. I think there was a 3rd goal disallowed for offside that was not offside.
    At the start of the 2nd half another Spainish goal was dissllowed. Even the Irish tv commentary team couldn't understand why that goal was disallowed.
    I think FIFA wanted Ireland to progress to play S. Korea as they would need less help v Ireland than they needed against Spain.

      You’re both right, I think. Germany is Germany, always a tough team to beat, but they were definitely a team greater than the sum of their parts, and it showed against Brazil. Meanwhile, Spain always seemed to be the opposite in the pre-2010 era, a team with so many talented players that always seemed to underperform at the critical moment. It’s hard to say who would win but I think Spain would have a chance, just by reaching the semis, they would have a massive confidence boost, doing something no Spanish side had ever done before.

      Spain wasn't as brutal but they just got goal after goal denied and one offside decision was a gg opportunity. I couldn't believe what was going on in this joke of a word cup. Spain and Italy had the ability to go all the way and Italy were hounded by the refs for the whole tournament.

      I didn't know Alfie was just six in 2002.
      My first WC was 98. But as a German, and being a little older, 02 was the one that really stuck to me. Brazil really deserved it, with this legendary team: Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Cafú, Rivaldo and even young Kaká, just to name a few. The final although was close and with Ballack not being banned and Kahn _(still the winner of the Golden Ball/best player)_ without his slips, if, if , if...
      Along 06 there was probably no WC I followed that close. Even though of the weird kick-on time's. Our game against Paraguay, for example, started at 8:00 AM, if I remember correctly.
      It also made the foundation of our WC successes. 02=2nd, 06=3rd, 10=3rd and finally the title in 2014! 2018 came as a little shock to me _(remember the Confederation Cup and the European Under-21 Championship one year before)_ but I can live with it because in 2014 I could finally experience the great feeling of being the champions of the world!
      I also just missed one of Klose's 16 WC goals, against Cameroon _(don't know why)._
      Aaahhhh, I just love the World Cup!

I know home nations get a few decisions but South Korea got so many it was pretty obvious they were being pushed to keep the atmosphere going on home soil to promote the game in Asia. That's the problem with people who were either not born or were too young to remember, they don't see what others saw it was about an investment in the game to grow it so FIFA could develop these continents and create more wealth.

      @@NLT31 Not the way I saw it. Italy struggled to get out of the group only winning their opening game. Italy couldn't cope with South Korea's pressing and like a lot of Italian national teams when it's not going their way they started diving, whining and playing with the air of victimization. Although the team looked good on paper only it's defence was effective. Totti and Del Piero were too similar so Del Piero was pushed forward where he was ineffective the midfield had zero creativity leaving it all to Totti and the Koreans knew that and acted accordingly.
      Look at this line up:

    I am an Italy fan and the manner of the elimination left me incredibly embittered. A few days later I was even more incensed when yet again the referee sided with South Korea against Spain. As soon as the referees stopped doing their "job", South Korea were easily set aside by Germany and Turkey.
    That said, it is unhelpful to focus solely on South Korea/Italy/Spain. The whole tournament was riddled with ridiculous officiating mistakes, below just some which I can recall.
    -Turkey v/s Brazil: Rivaldo's drama to get opponents sent off.
    -Argentina v/s England: Owen dives for a penalty, Collina pretends not to see the dive and gives it. To be fair Batistuta should probably have received a second yellow earlier in that game.
    -Italy v/s Croatia: two valid goals by Italy (Vieri and Inzaghi) disallowed by the lord of bad referees, Graham Poll.
    -South Korea v/s Portugal: some pretty contentious decisions there, all directed against the Portuguese. Joao Pinto sent off after just 27 minutes in a must-win game for the Portuguese.
    -Italy v/s Mexico: another non-existent offside found against Italy as they scored.
    -Belgium v/s Brazil: the Belgians take the lead with a superb acrobatic goal, only for it to be disallowed for a foul nobody had seen. Brazil go on to win 2-0.
    -South Korea v/s Italy: Moreno messed up this game so badly that his most glaring error went unnoticed. Gattuso scored what should have been a winner, only for a non-existent offside to be given yet again.
    -Germany v/s USA: USA almost score on a corner as one of their players heads the ball. A German on the line saves with his hand... officials rule there's nothing to see!

      As a Korean, Korea should absolutely have lost to Spain, no question.
      Korea vs Italy was a toss up if you look at the statistics of the game, but Italy should have edged Korea. Even with bad refereeing, Italy could have won but the goal was disallowed.
      Korea got to the round of 16 FAIR and SQUARE and the campaign should have ended there. Portugal was poor, even lost to the USA, who got demolished by Poland and should have lost 4-1 to korea (19 shots to 5-6).
      Germany and Turkey did not set aside Korea. The loss was a margin of one goal for each match.

    The most frustrating thing about South Korea getting to the Semi Finals is that it denied us the possibility of seeing either Italy or Spain play Brazil in the final. Instead that painfully average Germany side made it to the final instead.
    Convinced both Italy and Spain would have beaten that German side in the Semi Finals. Both would imo have given Brazil a much better game in the final.
    The German 2002 side have to be the luckiest side to have mad a World Cup final in my lifetime. A German side which had only 3 good players in it, Oliver Kahn, who was a deserving Golden Ball winner, Michael Ballack who got the goal to get them to the final despite his booking ruling him out and of course Miroslav Klose who chipped in with their goals. It really was an average German side with the exception of those three players and they would have been lucky to get beyond the Last 16 without Kahn, Ballack and Klose. After all, England had destroyed them 5-1 in a qualification game just 9 months earlier.
    Rudi Voller also has to go down as the luckiest coach to make a World Cup final. As it showed in Euro 2004 when Germany couldnt even beat Latvia in Euro 2004 groups and crashed out after a loss to the already qualified Czech Republic in their final group match. Even Germany's run to the final was very fortunate. South Korea outplayed them in spells in the Semi Finals and had it not been for Kahn in the Quarter Finals, USA would have beaten them after dominating the whole game.
    However, one could say that Voller was a reluctant coach and really never should have gotten Die Mannschaft job in the first place. He took job in 2000 on a caretaker basis whilst Christoph Daum finished his contract at Leverkusen and then he would take the German job in 2001. However, an alleged cocaine scandal broke out and Daum instantly pulled out of the arrangement to coach Die Mannschaft and Voller took the reigns full time after that. Unsurprisingly, after leaving Germany job in 2004 after poor showing at that summer's Euros, Voller only had one more short and ill fated spell in management at Roma in late 2004.

In the other editions the home teams perhaps had home advantage in terms of having more supporters, but for instance Spain, Mexico, Italy, France and Germany were great teams in the editions they hosted between 1986 and 2006 and, apart from Mexico in 86, they all had the quality for even winning the editions they were hosting and France actually did

    Spain's second disallowed goal cannot really be considered a "disallowed goal". The linesman signaled for a goal kick just after the cross and the referee had already blown his whistle before Morientes' header. The Korean goalie didn't try to make the save.
    There were a few sketchy decisions in that match, though, particularly two very tight (or non-existing) offsides.

  • @Kblay1
    @Kblay1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Great vid. Just a couple of points. In the case of the disallowed goals from Tomassi for Italy and Morientes for Spain, the whistle was blown considerably before the ball was put in the net in both instances and the defenders and goalkeepers stopped. Perhaps they would have scored anyway, but realistically we'll never know. Also a quick fact correction: South Korea's World Cup record prior to 2002 was actually played 14, won 0, drawn 4, lost 10.

    Alfie, nice video, and i know i am late to the party and you'll probably never read this, but i have to mention: I am not sure if the "we might not know if Geoff Hursts shot was behind the line" is supposed to be a joke, but since you mentioned it twice, twice with no indication that you mean it as a joke: there is video of the incident (shot from an goal line angle) showing, that the shot was not behind the line. It was not even very close. So we most definitely know, it was not behind the line, just as much as we know the Lampards shot was behind the line and should have been given as a goal.
    I've watched a lot of UK coverage of the fifa world cup and these shows weirdly never include the footage proving, the 3:2 in the '66 final was irregular. I don’t remember that Spanish game. I remember vividly the Italy - South Korea game; I am of Italian origin. Italy could have avoided the consequences of the bad refereeing decisions if they hadn’t decided to play defensively and try to sit on a 1 - 0 lead. At one point you could see Trappatoni screaming at his team “gli, no gli (here, not there”. From his hand gestures, it was clear he wanted his team to play back. Once they had the lead, until the Koreans scored the Latin’s goal, the Italians played with 10 men behind the ball; only Vieri was in front of the ball.
    They never really could come back after the goal.
    Italians go on about corruption at the World Cup in 2002. It avoids them confronting the fact that their coach blew it for them.

    • @pritapp788
      @pritapp788 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is so damn true. Even if I supported Italy, I remain unconvinced that they would have gone all the way. Trapattoni was a dinosaur trying to implement catenaccio (the style of football he had experienced as a footballer in the 1960s) with a group of players who wanted to attack. Could have escaped v/s Korea, probably not Spain or Germany. From the very second game with Croatia, this team had been treading very perilously.
      In fact even after WC 2002 things did not immediately get better. Euro 2004 qualification was complicated, and the final tournament there was a disaster. Clearly it was not just a matter of referees: this team was going nowhere with Trapattoni in charge.

    • @Darrow1991
      @Darrow1991 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pritapp788 a friend once commented on Trappatoni that he never adjusted to three points for a win. That explains his lack of success later in his career.

      @@Darrow1991 I can only agree. Trap screwed Italy real bad, more so than Poll or Moreno who were clearly anti-Italian. The worst thing about it is that thanks to Moreno, Trapattoni escaped any blame and was able to lead Italy to another predictable tournament disaster in 2004. Had Italy been eliminated under more normal circumstances, Trap would not have escaped the sack, a more modern coach might have taken over... the worst thing that happened to Italy in the early 2000s was actually Zoff resigning for Trapattoni to take over.

    • @GermanicusCaesar117
      @GermanicusCaesar117 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Did the Italians play the poorly or were they screwed over by the refs? The answer is yes. The two are not mutually exclusive.
      The fact that Italy had played poorly in that game (arguably in that tournament since they were runners up in their group) didn't change the fact that they were on the receiving end of some poor refereeing decisions.
