On December 2, 2010, FIFA announced the 2022 World Cup would take place in a surprising country, Qatar. At that same meeting, they also announced that the 2018 World Cup would take place in Russia. These selections set off a new chapter in FIFA’s history, one where the public would have a greater sense on how bribery and corruption have a huge role in who gets to host this international sporting event.
The last 14 World Cup locations were decided by a group of 24 powerful men within FIFA called the executive committee. Their votes meant a lot to bidding nations and allegations on bidders bribing members of the committee lingered for decades. These allegations reached a new level when criminal investigations were launched nearly five years after that FIFA announcement. The fallout of these investigations nearly broke FIFA and tainted the World Cup.

Are you guys saying these things like it counters anything I am saying? I am not saying that America is all-deserving of, anything. I'm not American on top of that.
Just because no nation is perfect that means that this unusually high level of corruption is okay? Laws are neat in your mind. I don't expect host nations to be perfect, far from it. I think it reasonable to set a base level of "well that's too much corruption", but hey, defend wrongdoings because America went to war in Iraq... Absolute top notch logic 🤦🏼‍♂️

The World Cup isn't corrupt when the host is a western nation but when the countries you don't like get to host it, it becomes corrupt. If you want to have a separate World Cup, maybe you guys should organize your own World Cup filled with your own teams while the "corrupt" countries that are left out host their own World cup.
32 countries play in the World Cup. Europe gets 13 slots, which is almost half of the available slots and half of the number of countries in Europe. Meanwhile, Africa, which has 54 countries (the most in the world), gets just 5 slots. If that isn’t corruption, then tell me what is.

The bribe-taking and bribe-giving I think happened in New York City. Under Interpol rules, if a crime happens in U.S. territory and there is strong evidence--video evidence, witness evidence, etc.--showing said crimes occurred within the U.S., then the FBI and other U.S. authorities can then call for those alleged criminals to be hailed back to the U.S. to be tried in U.S. courts. All signatories to Interpol are allowed this privilege. So if criminals commit crimes on Swiss soil, and those criminals then escape to the U.S., then Swiss police authorities can demand that the U.S. hail those criminals and send them to Switzerland to bring them to justice in Swiss courts.

It's interesting to see that, if Russia and Qatar organize the world cup, the system is corrupt...
Isn't it a sporting event that needs to go beyond politics and, if we analyze the case of Qatar, develop the sport in that country. Of course the USA could host a great world cup, but let's not forget the 2nd and 3rd world countries, too...

    • @yeetingat100subs9

it is corrupt though. did you just ignore the facts from the video? Qatar doesn't deserve a world cup if they're paying and bribing to do it. especially a country that has no football culture does not need to be hosting a football event when their own people have no interest in football. hosting it in egypt or turkey or morocco for example would all make much more sense because they actually care about football and they even have a chance to get picked without corruption and bribing

Blackwater 49 is correct and the commenters insinuating that the money used by the DFB to bribe FIFA officials was tax money or saying that "the money comes from the same place" are embarrassing themselves with their ignorance. If you don't know anything about the facts, why comment at all?

Such a shame the World Cup didn't come to Australia. We lead the technical proposal, have a burgeoning domestic league waiting to explode and a massive interest in sport, but just couldn't beat the Qatari money.

The world cup was never going to Australia anyways regardless. It only attracted one measly vote, that says it all. It was a naive bid which wasted a lot of taxpayers money that could of spent at the grassroots of football, now football gets a lot less money per player compared to AFL, Rugby League, Union and Cricket.
