I didn't want to have to pull that greasy gear off every time I change my oil so I just remove the headstock cover and pump it out the top. After several failed devices I finally ended up with the same hand pump fluid extractor that you used and it's great. I also tossed a couple of rare earth magnets in the bottom of the case so I inspect those each time it's drained. I didn't use any gasket sealer on my lid either and no leaks.

Next time I open mine up I'm going to do the same with the magnets. I finished the cross slide lock today. Video should be out sometime tomorrow.

I couldn’t resist the urge to look in the gearbox when I first got the machine and took the cover off early. I dropped a rare earth magnet into the bottom of the gearbox before replacing the cover and when I did my first oil change I took the cover off again and the magnet was coated with a grey “mud”. I’m certain that it was just microscopic bits of burr from breaking in the gears. It was a lot easier refilling it with the top cover off than through the little oil hole provided. I didn’t use any gasket compound either and haven’t noticed any leaks.
