  • Been down home spending time with family and decided to do a review of my little sister's Eb Bass. This is a Besson Sovereign Eb Bass, model BE982, and is quite disappointing. I was certainly expecting it to be better than it is.

The low notes aren't a problem of the instrument. I don't have any problems to play the low notes on my Sovereign BE982.

love your videos. I find the lower notes rather easy on my sovereign be982. Also my tuba has two strap rings, so I'd imagine the tuba has been modified. But you produced a lovely sound and did "the Swan" justice.

Hello, Trent! I like videos with trombones and trumpets! You have good sound on them. But after I watched some of your videos with tubas I can give a fair judgement, that you have serious trouble with big mouthpieces. Nevertheless Besson Eb usually have problems with G note within all the range and it is fair enough to admit, that lower notes with 4th valve involved have to be practised a lot to get them done. That tube wrapping on compensation system gives a lot of crossroads before the sound gets on straight highway. And almost every compensating tuba will have that problem. But that valve mechanism is clever, simple, reliable and quiet. All slides are excellent and it easy to clean.

If you were going to play anything from Carnival of the Animals, you should have played "The Elephant"! All time favorite for tuba or double bass!

May be helpful, what my old teacher once said:"you don't have to press the air through your Instrument. There is enough in it. You only have to kick the first molekule in motion, the others will follow by themselves."

Hi Trent, stumbled across this while looking for serial number info haha. I've got a 982 and I find the low notes really hard and require a lot more breath support so some days I only get them 50% of the time. Otherwise its a nice instrument and I like it but being short I have to put it on the seat like a Bb player so I can reach the mouthpiece haha. Its got rings but I used a smaller and lighter Cortois for marching, again because of short person issues. The 982 is nice tho.

Hi Trent, I asked you before about a bass trombone but do you have any experience with classic cantabile tenor trombones? I'm currently looking at the QP-52. Would this be any good for a student that plays lead trombone in a brass band?

Hey! I know this has nothing to do with this video in particular, but I was wondering where you bought your soprano trombone ( Jupiter). I've looked everywhere online but it seems to be discontinued, and there is no music store around me, any suggestions? Also, the only other in budget soprano trombone I can find is by a company named Jean baptiste, would you say this is an okay company considering this wouldn't be my main instrument? Thanks!

Saint-Saens actually wrote Carnival Of The Animals including The Swan. I can play it on my cello.

Hey Trent, around a year ago I bought a perantucci pt-64 this mouthpiece was designed for F and Eb tubas. Around a week ago someone donated a Eb tuba but we only use BBb tubas (except if the student has their own CC tuba) I never used the pt-64 on an actual horn I used it to buzz and work on range. So when I found out we got a Eb tuba I thought perfect! But when I tried fitting it in it wouldn't fit. This confused me very much so I got my BBb tuba and it fit perfectly! The cup is the size of a large euphonium mouthpiece. I dont know about you but when I'm playing a BBb tuba I want a dark deep sound, something a mouthpiece that small could never do. Anyway do you know of any reason why the mouthpiece won't fit in the horn? The mouthpiece is made in Germany but they were all of American design for the most part I know the 64 is an American design.

try putting different brass mouthpieces in different brass instruments, and you can do this with a hallowed out wine cork as an adapter. and do you own a frenchhorn

+Bitch I'm fabulous If you search for sheet music for 'the swan' by Camille Saint Saens then you should find something. Else it should be on IMSLP.

you know, when you're playing Eb you can read the bass clef the same way you read the treble clef if you imagine 3 sharps more ;) the original has 1 sharp so in Eb it's 4 sharps

The BE981 has a better sound in low reg as it is larger bore. imo the 982 is inferior for most playing (also it gets damaged v. easily as it has a bunch of extra gubbins attached to it). +The 981 is cheaper from many dealers

In Europe, the tubas are called basses, and in the US it's called a tuba. there are the same thing just a different use of vernacular
