Great review. I recently got a eb tuba made in the USSR. Also changed the mouthpiece. It has been fun learning a new instrument after focusing on guitar for the past 40 years

The timber mouthpiece is novel. I'll have a go at turning one for my bass trombone, with suitably hard timber, as an experiment. In terms of a brass mouthpiece for the instrument in your video, I think it'd only be a matter of reducing the shank diameter of one you like, on a metal lathe. Just love the comedy you add to your video's. All round, very entertaining and informative.

    Hi Trent,
I enjoy your videos a lot. Thank you for what you do.
I just bought an Eb tuba for under $100, and I'm looking to get it into working order. Do you have any thoughts?
There are a few obvious things wrong with it that I think I can fix. It has a very leaky spit valve that needs to be recorked. The slides all move but are not as smooth as I'd like.
It also has a sticky middle valve, and I'm trying to figure out why that is. The particular configuration of the valves on the tuba I have is such that no side of them is directly approachable, so even though there are some dents and ripples elsewhere in the instrument, it seems highly unlikely that any direct damage by banging could be done to the valve bloc. It seems like the valve stems and caps are not the fanciest or most precise equipment I've ever seen, to put it lightly, so it occurred to me that one thing that might be possible is that one of the valve stems is slightly bent, but if it is that would be by an amount that can't be seen with the naked eye. So I'm not sure if that's it. I also tried moving different valves around between each other, and for some reason it seems that the valves move okay when switched but not in their respective casings.
One challenge is that I haven't found the brand yet or serial number. It's possible with more careful looking it will turn up. All I've found so far is an floral etching on the bell that says Elkhorn, Indiana. I'm aware some brands of American tubas have been built in that city in the past, but I think I found out when researching a clarinet once that the different factories would often make things for one another and adopt each other's brand names, so without seeing more specific information I'm not sure if that would resolve where it is. It seems like this would be important information to know, because as I've looked up mandrilling valve blocs as a possible last resort on the sticky valve, I've found out that the diameters vary by brand, so I think I can't do anything like that until I know for sure who made it and what the model is.
The other thing that's odd about this tuba is that the last tiny bit of tube that's between where the mouthpiece would go and the leadpipe is unsoldered. Having never played the tuba before I wasn't sure if that was normal or not. Perhaps, I thought, it's an additional piece of tube added for taller players to get the mouthpiece closer. But it seemed more likely it was supposed to be directly soldered on, so I wondered what you thoughts were about that?
The tuba came without a mouthpiece, which is part of why I was able to push the seller down so low on the price. I am ordering one and hoping to inspect how everything sounds, possibly with the help of plumber's putty on the parts of it that are leaky.
I'd be happy to hear your thoughts.

Trent, sounds like that bass has the little metal guides on the side of the valve?
They screw into the valve so you can grip them with a small adjustable wrench and unscrew them. Then replace them with plastic guides which you can buy. You may have to file the plastic guides down once fitted to the valve but it will drastically quiet the valve action.
I usually make my own guides to replace noisy metal guides.

These instruments were actually made by Boosey & Hawkes and is similar to the top of the range Besson New Standard. The modern Sovereign mouthpiece receiver fits and allows the use of a modern American or European mouthpiece.

I’m currently being lent a Boosey & Hawkes Imperial E-flat compensating tuba similar to this one, and I’m finding that G1 through E1 on the B-flat side don’t slot well at all. How is it on the instrument you have?

Personally I play an etude, my first trumpet was a much higher quality and more expensive instrument but the etude was a gift from my aunt, and it once belonged to a now passed brother of mine, I enjoy it very much but need a new nut or screw for the third valve tuning slide finger hole, yes I know that they do not make parts for etude trumpets by themselves for the one I play. I am serious about trumpet and do enjoy it and would be glad to hear anyone's input.

Hey Trent, I know this is a little off topic for this video, but what is the relation between King and Benge? I’ve notice that the instruments are created very similarly and just use some of the exact same ideas as opposed to other brands that build similar horns but not as closely “matched” as King and Benge

    • @A432Hz
      @A432Hz 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Just A Guy Who Loves Music both Benge and King are owned by the American music conglomerate Conn-Selmer, inc. They also own Armstrong, Artley, Bach, Emerson, Holton, LeBlanc, etc. I think they also own Steinway.

But the 4th valve extends it's range down to the same as the Bb, which begs the question 'why a Bb then' - the answer to that it the same as to why a big 5/4 or 6/4 Bb, or an F or C, to which the simple reply is 'more Ooomph!'
