Fallout 2 Marcus' character as shown in dialogue

- A demonstration of Fallout 2's Marcus' character as shown within dialogue. In the context of Fallout 3, Marcus was 'dipped' with a strain of FEV that was peculiar to the west coast, NOT the one used in Washington, DC. Marcus is intelligent, articulate, speaks easily and fluidly (without the hesistation and shouting tone of the Fallout 3 DC super mutants) and has depth. My understanding is that the west coast type FEV did not cause a decrease of intelligence or an increase in body size as the mutant aged, which is different from the FEV type in Washington DC that is shown in Fallout 3. Marcus was voiced by Michael Dorn and I love the job he did.

Marcus is so cool. I enjoyed Fallout 3, but I really hope we'll see more mutants like Marcus in Fallout: New Vegas.
Bryce M dude, u were right ;)
I can only imagine how happy you were when you saw Marcus when first playing New Vegas.
Oh man, i want to know your reaction when you saw Marcus in New Vegas
@@cosmicdude8282 damn old comment haha! I absolutely freaked out when I heard there was a super mutant town named Jacobstown and ran there straight away. When I saw him standing at the gates it felt like coming home :)
Bryce M So did you decide to come back to this vid after 10 years out of the ordinary or were you notified by TH-cam of replies?
So that's how Jacobstown got its name...
Howl Marcus talks about it in New Vegas
What a great mutant he would’ve made
Damn I love that line "if they weren't safe with a mutie and a Steel Knight, safe just wasn't going to happen". I have to admit, as a Wastelander, I'd have followed these two for safety too.
@Droxy 56
Super Mutants, as in proper SUPER mutants, don't eat people. Nor are they typically violent. You're mistaking supermutants with FO3 and FO4's orcs.
@@ThatZenoGuy
This is incorrect. Even the master lamented that the vast majority of Mutants are unstable and violent.
@@LightAndDarkMdness02
Notice the word you used, MUTANTS are unstable and violent. SUPER mutants aren't however, hence the name.
@@ThatZenoGuy
Rhonda: You're listening to another edition of Know Your Mutants, with Best Friend Tabitha! So, Best Friend Tabitha, who will we learn about today?
Tabitha: Uhh, I guess it's time we talked about the dumb-dumbs!
Rhonda: Oh, you mean the second-generation super mutants, WHO AREN'T SO BRIGHT?!
Tabitha: That's them! Dumb-dumbs! Uhh... that is, they...
Rhonda: They're very big! And strong!
Tabitha: Yes! They're just as big as other mutants, and as strong as they look. Beyond that, uhm...
Rhonda: And there's a lot of them!
Tabitha: Oh, yeah. Dumb-dumbs are the most common type of mutant that most travelers will encounter, and make up more than half the mutants here in Utobitha.
Rhonda: Best Friend Tabitha, some of our listeners may wonder how you can call them dumb-dumbs on the air like this!
Tabitha: That's a good question, Rhonda!
Rhonda: Thank you!
Tabitha: The truth is, they're so dumb they don't even know that I'm talking about them right now!
Rhonda: And that's another revealing look at mutant-kind. Second-generation super mutants: big, numerous... DUMB! More after this.
(I.e. Any Super mutant not created from what used to be a human vault dweller was the same as an East Coast super mutant. The vast majority of Super mutants in the Master's army were just like super mutants in Fallout 3 and 4.)
Edit: Correction this is referring to Super mutants created by the Enclave. Still, the master makes mention in Fallout 1 that super mutants often come out stupid due to the radiation levels. This is why he wants Vault 13, because there is enough Vault Dwellers there for a proper super mutant army. Every "Wasteland Mutant" enemy in Fallout 1 is a failed intelligent super mutant created from the master trying to FEV the average wastelander. Even without these generic "Wasteland Mutants", you still have Harry, who is so dumb the vast majority of Gen 2s are smarter than him.
@@LightAndDarkMdness02
Tabitha is a schitzoid Nightkin, SUPER mutants are by definition smart, like Marcus, Lou, etc. All other mutants are just that, mutants.
The Master only considered the future of mutants to be those which are superior to humans.
this is why the fallout series is great. characters like Marcus
It would be cool to make a fallout movie called Marcus
Amazing how developed his character went from 2 to new vegas. He became wise, a great leader trying to help other super mutants seek peace and came to realized while the master's intentions were noble it didn't end well. I bet Ulysses would see Marcus as a potential nation builder.
I would pay to see Ulysses and Marcus have a full conversation with each other.
@Ferbujosbe Don't forget: The Divide, The Divide, The Divide, The Divide, The Divide, The Divide, The Divide, The Divide, The Divide.
@Ferbujosbe *HISTORY, OLD WORLD*
@Ferbujosbe i swear I didn’t know what the fuck Ulysses was babbling about 90% of the time.
“The Bull took your Cheetos. The Bear has your Mountain Dew”
not really, he was pretty much all of those things in fallout 2
Marcus has to be THE coolest Super Mutant in any Fallout game. I LOVE how he came back in New Vegas.
And even better, Michael Dorn (his voice actor) even reprised the role.
i like how marcus just accepts the fact that the master's plans were foiled, and he doesn't seem bitter about it. then again, 80 years is a long time to get over something.
That’s part of what makes him such a great character. No matter how twisted an ideology is, there will always be people who adhere to what was trying to be accomplished. There are real world examples of this (Stalinism, colonialism), and oftentimes these people are genuinely good people who help their communities. Gives it all complexity. Marcus still believes in the Master’s vision, and it’s interesting to hear his side of things. Gosh what a great game, new Vegas did him justice too.
His smoothing voice, his small confident smile, his eyes of trust and the way he narrates his story...
Gosh, he's the perfect friend.
Fallout 2 had incredible voice acting...
The first 2 games @@bhavankarnani4740
He’s the gentle giant
"Muties and normals made peace a long time ago"
Bethesda apparently forgot about that
EDIT: And to all of you "bUt tHe lORe!" folks?... So what? You think lore just magically pops up out of nowhere and developers have no choice but to write around it lol? Lore is made to accommodate writing and game design decisions, not the other way around. Super Mutants in 3 and 4 are just another raider faction because Bethesda wanted a bunch of generic "scary green orcs" faction for you to shoot at rather than put in the work into creating an actually interesting and well written faction like what 1, 2 and New Vegas had already made
Wouldn't it have been cool im Fallout 4 if there was a super mutant settlement that wanted to trade with human settlements and you gotta bring the peace
I mean, bethesda's writing is a joke, but at least they tried to respect the original work by setting their games in the east coast, at least it's a good excuse for things to be so differently made
@@lvnhdmnn Too bad they retcon a lot of things from the West Coast.
They made peace but only on the west coast... bethesda has made lore on the east coast
Bethesda that Bethesda this smh. People just don't care about the lore and curse Bethesda for everything wrong with Fallout series.
Sure Bethesda did make some changes that you might consider 'retcon'. But those changes are probably the reason why people are still playing Fallout series to this day.
his "pimples" popped in fallout new Vegas hes got literally craters in his face now
We will get to meet up with Marcus again in Fallout: New Vegas.
Oh, and still voiced by the same guy.
It's gonna be awesome! I wonder what kind of stories he'll have to tell...
TestECull im sure he would have had heaps of stories if bethesda gave obsidian longer than 18 months to make the game

Heh, I actually find this pretty sweet. I never played Fallout 2 but I loved him in Fallout New Vegas, he was pretty sweet and now I understand why it's called "Jacobs Town".
He had no stories lmao they had no time for the game development

Masters plan is pretty much a failure since some mutants do fight each, especially the nightkins, if the player character in new Vegas ask that shouldn't they listen to each other since they're both mutants, Marcus response was "its like saying Caesar would actually listen to kimbell "
The Master was psychic and controlled the mutants with his telepathy, the supermutants bent to his will as a collective.
It was a failure because super mutants are sterile without exception.

Yep. Really the only reason his plan wouldn't have worked is because super mutants can't reproduce without transforming humans, meaning super mutants have an immovable population cap.

Yeah he is, him and some other super mutants reside in a lodge-like settlement called Jacobstown. The location is up north west near the mountains.

pirotess2 wouldn't make sense. In FNV Marcus needs to stay with his mutant kind as they need a leader
He done his time.
@@Stryker98 He did leave his town behind once to follow the Chosen One. I mean, he was Sheriff and Mayor of Broken Hills and left the town as the mine crisis was averted.
That "if all humans" line has really stuck with me for the longest time.
True. The worst armies in the world couldn't have mustered a single troop if the soldiers could have exercised their free will-fought for what THEY believed in instead of on someone else's behalf. I definitely wish I could actually sit down and discuss that with Marcus, and see how he would feel about specific aspects of his belief system. Does he believe in pure individuality of everyone doing what they want free from outside influence, or does he simply believe that people would innately be drawn to peace were they not so keen on their own greed?
When your video game makes someone wish they could talk politics with one of your characters, you know you've got some great writing on your hands.
@@ob2kenobi388 The issue is how a person forms their beliefs and how it relates to them and the people around them. There are so many different groups and types of people that it is unfair to expect everyone to merge into one, especially when it puts their identity, culture or beliefs in almost inevitable danger of destruction, especially if theirs is much less prominent or is the one that's being pushed out or their core values are not being met by the new collective.

Well his role in New Vegas makes a bit more sense now.
I loved these talking heads. They were so effective. I get nervous that I might make them mad.
True. Except for decker. Fuck that guy in particular
Marcus is one of my favorite characters in all of Fallout, because he’s such an interesting creature.
He's my favorite too, also Fawkes and Uncle Leo.
one of the most beloved character in the lore, acted so perfect. wonder if there is any detailed information about their relationship. ''if they weren't safe with a mutie and a Steel Knight, safe just wasn't going to happen" Id follow em too probably
The meanest, roughest, toughest bastards in the Wasteland for sure.
Lieutenant Worf!
I was gonna sayyyy
Such a simple yet effective dialogue, why they can't do it today..
Because good writing doesn't sell as well as fun gameplay. Sad truth is, most players probably care less about why they're shooting someone and more about whether it's satisfying to do so. HBomberguy talked about it in his Fallout 3 video-how all of the reviews for the game when it came out had pictures of the player shooting someone in VATS, and the devs may have spent more time and effort modeling the 3d chunks of someone's head getting blown apart than they spent on whether some of the _main characters_ of their story were properly written or had motivations that made sense or whether that head was filled with actual interesting thoughts before you put a bullet in it. It's a good vid, you should watch it.
Play fallout 1 and it helps you understand better. The FEV virus has a number of possible outcomes for the people dipped. Some mutants come out with their prior knowledge intact, some come out with memories erased, some get dumb - and some don't survive at all and die a horrible death.
Kinda wish Marcus had his own unique in-game sprite. He looks awesome when you're talking to him.

Fun fact some important characters are voiced by Star Trek actors, the two famous ones are Mr. House Odo from Star trek DS9 and Marcus of course Worf from Star trek TNG and DS9.
Why the hell did bethesda make a fallout game if they are just going to retcon all the lore?
Because their writer is a fucking joke who contradicts his own stuff because he "wanted some fun"

Yeah, fun. Remember that thing that games are meant to be?
Except fallout 3 and 4 are fucking neither.

Guys I have a Theory on who Marcus was before being a Mutant.
"My memories of being a human aren't as clear as they once were, but I remember pettiness, hatred, jealousy... I prefer being a mutant."
Richie Marcus: a "mentioned only" character from the New Vegas add-on Old World Blues.
Marcus may remember, those negative emotions, but maybe they weren't his. Maybe they belonged to Doctor Bourous. Who was bullied by Richie Marcus.
***** Im more concered with the fact the super mutant Marcus and Ricky Marcus were made from 2 diffrent dev teams the IP of fallon was sold to Bethesda when the guys who started fallout went bankrupt how ever biological life span wise its possible Harold the Ghoul who knew the master a 8ish when the bombs fell so maby Marcus was an old man when he got dipped a possible theory but dont put stock in it
***** good point and you may be right but dont gamble on that idea all the same
when i heard " richie marcus " marcus came into my mind right away
@@An_Ian Well, not exactly. While 7 years have passed and I imagine by now you figured this out already, I feel the need to respond. Fallout New Vegas was published by Bethesda, but *developed* by Obsidian, which, at the time, still had *many* of the old Fallout 1 and 2 devs in it.
I love how Marcus despise still having the same mindset and still agreeing with the Master he is a kind person who doesn't impose his ideas, and doesn't look back at history with hate.
Everyone should be like Marcus
Marcus' demeanor easily makes him feel like the type of guy you wanna invite to the bar to have a drink and share stories with.
I really hate how all of the mutants in fallout 4 were screaming simpletons
I've never heard that vault suit dialogue, the more you know.
one of my favourite fallout characters
Love Marcus. He's my fav NPC
Crazy how Marcus knew 3 of the main characters in the fallout series, I really hope he shows up in the show too
What an awesome character
@nclanceman It may have had to do with radiation or it may have been exposure to a mutated airborne FEV that resulted from the Chinese bombing the research facility that created FEV. In either case, untouched, pure strain humans (like vault dwellers) would produce the desirable super strong, super intelligent Super Mutants.
We all need a Marcus in our lives :)
I hope to become a Marcus
Interesting to see how his opinions evolved over the years.
I never played fallout 2 cuz I'm 14 and cant find away to play it so I assumed he named it after the chosen one

notice he goes on about his good friend jacob, and in new vegas marcus pretty much runs jacobstown? just me or do you all reckon marcus named jacobstown after his friend after he left black mountain?
In New Vegas, Marcus mentioned that he named the place Jacobstown after a friend of his. That'd be Jacob. Lol I'm replying on a 10 years old comment btw
new vegas gave a lot of people closure who waited so expectantly for Van Burgen
I wish there was an option to convince the master that even though mutants couldn't replace humanity they could still coexist. It's obviously useful to have them around in the wasteland.
god damn, I've never played fallout 2, but I got completely sucked in to this dialogue. Delivery is amazing too.

FEV mk2 what the master used was design to make the next gun of humans, better in everyway, but variy based on a persons rad level, the lower the smarter. Marcus and Lou being how its suppost to work, whille Harry being how off it can. Gen 1's however then to be above ave to a human.
The one the Evlace use was disign to be shock troopers (as they didn't like mutants of any kind) so they were dumber
