    I'm currently working on my kayak/camping trailer for my ascend h10. Really like how u did the solar panel set up. I made the box 28in high so I can slide my Remington weatherproof totes in. The wench seems like a bit much but bigger is better! Nice work!

    • @jones_edition
      @jones_edition  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks John! The solor has been great. I did step one panel up there messing around with the kayak. The winch is overkill for sure. But it beats pulling it out of the water while loaded down with a battery and trolling motor. My kayak is pretty heavy now. Haha. There are days I question if I should have just done a jon boat build. Now that I have small kids I might work on that. When it warms up, I will be doing some modifications. So you will have to check out those down the road. Here is a link to the totes I use. th-cam.com/video/rtk4nnBbCvU/w-d-xo.html

      Jones Edition if you don’t mind my asking. Were did you get the winch? I can’t find one with a wireless remote. And what kind of pulley is that on the trailer arm? So that I know exactly what to buy.

    • @jones_edition
      @jones_edition  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I bought the winch at Harbor Freight (2500 ATV winch I believe). Its cheap but I dont use it a bunch so it should last. I think the pulley is from a snatch block that I took apart and bolted to the metal piece coming from the trailer. My buddy is a welder and he used some scrap metal and we laser cut a hole for the bolt for the snatch block pulley. I'm sure there are other ways to get it done like finding a hand crack from a boat trailer and modifying it somehow. Hopefully this helps! You can ask any questions you want! I wish I had someone to ask when I was building mine

    Any cool changes or things you would do differently? This is essentially the design I'm going for as well. A box for storage and the kayak(s) travels on top. My primary spec for the box size would be a standard plastic storage tote (are they "standard"?). I'll add rod storage inside until I start to need the room then will mount a pvc pipe based rod locker external to the box.
    Is the carpet holding up?
    nvm, I read your comments later down the page and that answered most of my questions...

    • @jones_edition
      @jones_edition  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      All good! I have since sold the kayak and bought a boat for me and the kids. I still have the trailer. I took the top off of it and use it as a small haul trailer for my storage unit buys. I leave it outside 100% of the time now and the carpet has been awesome! I don't know if the carpet was super necessary but I wanted to give it a complete look. I wish I would have finished my rod holder in the middle and I wish I made drawer slides to be able to reach the gear in the middle. Overall I loved it. There are way better people at this than me but I learned alot. I just tell people to go for it and make it your own! One of my favorite products when I finished it

    @jlancaster46 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice job ... a lot of work went into that for sure. My question is why would you put carpeting on the OUTSIDE of your trailer? If you're driving in the rain or down a muddy road it's going to be a mess and tough to clean. Also .... it's going to hold water for a while so I'd be concerned about mold. I would have mounted those side doors so the hinge is toward the front and the clasp toward the back. They way they are (they don't seem to close too tight), as you drive down the highway, they're going to be like wind/water scoops and drive all of that right into your trailer? Final thing ... I like the way you McGyvered that launch system but how tough is it really to just get your Kayak off the trailer and walk it on down to the water? That said, this would be great for an older person who couldn't maneuver their boat very well or even someone with a disability to be able to get the boat off so they could enjoy the water. Anyhoo - love your commitment to detail.

    • @jones_edition
      @jones_edition  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the view and comments! I stored the trailer in a shed and it was only rained on it a couple times. When I got back I put a fan on it. And it dried in less than a hour. Usually the drive home and the sunshine will dry it. It's exterior carpet. I wanted a nicer looking trailer, that's why I used carpet.
      The side doors had to swing that way because of bar coming from the front of the trailer (originally welded on be the previous owner) and the wheel well made it only open half way if it were to swing the other way.
      My kayak weighted close to 200 lbs loaded down with gear, trolling motor and deep cycle marine battery plus the weight of the kayak itself, made it a pain to move around. I made the ramp for easy deployment. Just push it off. And use the winch to pull it out of the water.
      All of it wasn't perfect but it worked for me. I would do it differently if I had to do it over again but I was happy with it. I recently sold the kayak and took apart the trailer to used in a different fashion. I bought a 16 ft boat to take the kids with me. Different stage of life.

    When I finally figure out mine, I'll be sealing it with resin. Thin the resin with acetone and allow to harden over a few days as the acetone evaporates. This will allow it to penetrate the wood. Then when fully cured, add one thin coat of unthinned resin. This will provide a boat quality water seal that will far outlast paint. At least what I'm doing as I don't want to be rebuilding it anytime soon.

    • @jones_edition
      @jones_edition  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes i would agree with you on that! I don't have much experience with resin or I would have probably done that with mine. I definitely have and pro and con list of what I did. I plan on doing a follow up video talking more about what I like and don't like about the trailer. Thanks for watching! And good luck with your build!

      @@jones_edition I'm definitely using some of your ideas. Especially the loading idea. Not sure the trailer kit I think I'll get (cheapest solution I've found yet) has the tilt option. I need to load an Autopilot 136 I just won. I lift a 120lb canoe onto my car myself now, but should plan on not being able to do that in the future. Would love to see more of your ideas. Cheers!

      Thanks brother! I wish I could have relocated the tree, truly! I'm love nature just as much as everyone and hated to remove it. It was necessary for several reasons. I have neighbors who have similar trees like mine and they have nearly damaged the house during storms. I left one nice size tree in the front which we love. I would have love whoever planted that tree in the front, to have put it in the back yard away from the house. Either way It was hard to do and i plan to plant another tree in its honor in the back. @jones_edition  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment and for the view! I used exterior carpet from Lowes. I used carpet glue and stapled all the edges. There are some areas that I felt like they needed screws. I made sure they looked uniform everywhere like they were supposed to be there. I store my trailer indoors so I dont really know how it would hold up to the elements here in Indiana (hot, cold, rain, ice , snow, etc..) The trailer has been rained on numerous times at a campsite or while driving. I does well with that sort of stuff. I made it pretty water tight and waterproof sealed the wood. I wish I painted the whole box with the oil base Rust-oleum paint. Its hard as a rock with that stuff dries. I did my doors only in that stuff, and it would have been nice to have the whole thing sealed like that.
      If you have more questions let me know. I will be posting more about the trailer when it warms up on my page so check that out hopefully soon down the road. Thanks again!
