Velcro the cooler to the paddleboard. That will add stability to the "seat" but be easy to remove.
Another option is a small electric trolling motor (30 pound thrust about 15 pounds) with a 50ah lithium battery (about 12 pounds). This is perfect for electric only ponds/lakes.

I think I just found my platform to build a wing in ground effect with hydrofoil.
A really good start is pumping it full of helium instead of air. Party balloon helium is cheap.
I also have a couple of ideas on how to use the hydrofoil as elevators and rudder while airborne.
Carbon fiber is the new fiberglass. It's just as cheap and easier to use now.

Aloha from Hawai'i Joe. I LOVE your idea, and what you have done with this simple paddleboard. I own a SOLO Skiff, and I love it BUT I have a bad back injury, and 4 surgeries later I have a substantial lifting limit, and my SOLO Skiff bone dry and empty weighs in at 150 pounds. My 6hp motor weighs another 60 pounds, and fuel, and safety equipment along with fishing tackle I am pushing close to 400 lbs. When I bought my SOLO Skiff 5 years ago it was $1800.00. Now they are close to double that. I almost forgot, I have to trailer this thing to a launch ramp, and pay an annual ramp use fee to the State of Hawai'i. I do allot of freediving spearfishing, so I just might have to get me one of these, and start out using it as a dive platform, and maybe add an outboard mount. I already own a 3hp Tanaka aircooled motor which would work fine when I get to that step. Mahalo nui for the inspiration.

I would get out a carbide drill and drill 1/4" holes through two layers of steel where the pivot point is on the motor. Put a spring loaded BB tip push pin in the holes and WALA!! No more flipping the engine in reverse. When needing to lift the drive jet just pull the pin.

Great ideas/build! That's awesome. About the only thing I would've done differently is used furniture grade (already colored) PVC pipe for the whole motor mount frame. Furniture grade PVC comes in like a dozen different colors, including the usual pipe fittings so you could've made it in different sections to relatively match the colors on the board. Because it's made for outdoor furniture it's much more UV resistant than even painted regular PVC. You could also use "T" fittings to install rod holders, camera mounts, or even some sort of grab/leaning bar (also with rod holders) across the board. I would've also used the same furniture grade PVC for the motor mount but put thick pieces of HDPE (plastic cutting board material) for mounting the actual motor. Lightweight but super strong, no wood splinters (it is an inflatable), waterproof, already colored, etc. You could even make it so the PVC frame can be taken apart to more easily fit in a car.
But otherwise...wow. That's awesome! Great job!

Maybe drill a small hole thru the clamp and I don't know pin the clamp so it doesn't tilt unless you take the pin out, look for a really thin locking pin. Nice little skiff you've built. One thing that could be done to make it even more portable would be to make the engine mount a little more collapsible by using paint poles that extend rather than the long 2x4's. I think the one I've got extends to about 10 feet (not that you'd need it that long). The main pole is fiberglass, and the secondary pole is aluminum. It's probably stiff enough for what you need. I could see drilling holes in the transom/motor mount for the poles to fit into to provide a connection. Of course, the rod holders would need to be reworked. Anyway, just a thought.

you could put a cross brace through that handle in the middle of the paddle board. That would help lock the 2x4" frame down on the paddleboard even more. Same if you angle the frame or use bungee cord ties to secure the frame to the 2 diagonal handles.

Just some things I see I would change. The rod holders I would spin them 180 degrees so the tips are facing you. Less likely to have rods getting caught up. If I missed it and they swivel and such, then disregard this. And move the cooler more toward the front and use a small chair and sit closer to the back. Also lower the motor into the water further when you are running in deeper water if possible. A trolling motor and a small lithium battery might be a good option too. Look for a HV Lithium battery. Trolling motors have come a long way from when I used them.

I really like this setup and the price point is so affordable. Portability is obviously great. I see all of the comments offering suggestions on improvements. First gen looks pretty good though. Swivel seat on cooler mounted to the rails would be a good start? Or maybe even make it able to slide forward and backwards as you add or remove weight with a pin system? But I thought it looked pretty comfortable. Maybe you could throw a short piece of pvc pipe inside that rubber tube tiller to give it some rigidity? I'm not sure how far you can go (or would try to go) on that gas tank, but it holds such a small amount of fuel, you could always throw a little refill on there without adding hardly any weight. Looks like a blast. Thanks for posting it.

    Joe,
This is a super use of a clever Costco paddle board! I would love to take that thing down along the southern end of Florida and cross from Miami to Chocoloski, fly fishing the back bays. The beauty of your redesign of a catamaran paddle board is its' flexibility (power/paddle) and the very light weight of the boat. Light weight allows you to launch, setup and haul out easily with one person.
As for suggestions, I would have glued a sticky rubber material to the underside of the wooden motor mounts to help spread loads and to reduce any friction induced ware to the surface of the paddle board. I would also mount the cooler on a cross piece so that your weight helps keep the motor/motor mount firmly attached to the top of the paddle board and to tie the whole mount structure together.

  • @comfortablynumb9342

That's pretty cool. I think I'd go with a an electric trolling motor instead of a gas engine. A trolling motor is quiet and can be used while fishin'. You've got me thinking about getting one and a motor. I live in Virginia and I'd have to register it to put any kind of motor on it, but that shouldn't be too expensive. That board could be awesome around the marshes for redfish and trout. On calm days it should be okay around the bridge tunnels. But I do wonder about hooking it or poking a hole in it. And keeping gear on it might be tough. But it's so cheap I might have to try it.

This gives me an idea... I wonder if a (largish) water pump could be used to pump water in the opposite direction that you want to travel in. And some kind of tiller handle points the output hose in that direction.
For example, a 'trash pump' that does 264 gallons per minute (4.4 gallons per second) is only about $180.
But it's not a boat motor... it's a water pump. I don't think water pumps require registration.
I don't know about the physics of this kinda system.

    • @JoeOceanside
      @JoeOceanside  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Yeah, it's basically the same thing as a Jet Drive. A Jet Drive has an impeller just like a water pump. It's just that with a water pump every inch of hose or pump from the intake to the discharge creates loss of efficiency.

An option could be to mount a seat swivel across those boards where the dry box is, then attach it to that handle so it does not move. That would put your weight on the boards and not directly on the skiff in on spot AND give you a back rest. With webbing, mount a small dry box (maybe in a backpack) onto the back of the seat that can pop off and float if overturned. Then mount your cooler in the front for your fish/lunch/water.

This would give you access to your stuff without having to get up and walk around it which unbalances the skiff. I'm guessing that you're putting your fish in this same cooler? If so the same convenience for putting fish in it. otherwise the hinges on the wood is a great idea. I also think it would be easy to take a pvc flange that has a little wider diameter than the motor shaft and cut it in half so you can screw it down behind the shaft to keep it from tipping over when you turn it around to go in reverse.

This is awesome young man. You made a craft that is perfect for fishing the canals and grass lands of the lower chesapeake bay. Headed to Costco tomorrow. I'm going to use an electric trolling motor and a 100ah lithium battery.

  • @Skiffdan

Cool. Look out for the man though. In most areas you’ve got a good handful of violations going on there. You could put a motor on a bathtub and those SOBs would want you to have it registered.

A suggestion for the motor kickover in reverse... a low bungee across the transom would prevent the motor from tipping forward and spilling fuel out of the tank vent

    • @JoeOceanside
      @JoeOceanside  27 วันที่ผ่านมา

Yeah, I really should have made the transom higher so it's not so tippy

If you get to close to a manatee you could possibly give it a hicky with the jet drive pickup.😂

Just put a bracket on the top of the bracket mount then it can not flop . Hope this helps.

I would use the rod holders backwards, that way if there's something in front of you the rods won't bend or snap.

If thr rod holders are back wards then they get in my way when I paddle.

What about registration since you're running a motor ?How are you handling that?

That's gonna depend on the state. Cut 2" off of it and it wouldn't need registration in my state while its current length of 10'2" requires registration, motor or not. Registration is based on length here so the very common, in my state, Grumman 15' canoes need to be registered but a 9ft solo canoe you clamped an electric canoe motor to the side of the hull wouldn't need to be registered.

In Florida anything that is motorized and used in public water needs be titled and registered.
      Kinda sucks…but, I don’t mind.

    • @JoeOceanside

I think you need a certificate of origin and a receipt and I think it's less than $100 to register. But I'm not sure yet
