Hey everyone... I had to cut some parts out of this initial edit because it got blocked when I first put it up. Sorry some of the parts of the song are missing, BUT we got all the amazing vocal parts still in there!! :)
He toured with and is friends with Myles. He's credited Myles with helping him learn how to control his naturally great voice so he doesn't blow it out
And there it is. I had a feeling this was coming after I saw the last video with Ian in it. Absolutely amazing stuff man! A beast vocalist/songwriter/ridiculous guitarist. So much we can learn from Ian. Cheers Chris!
When I first heard this song, I thought I heard the ghost of Chris Cornell. I was blown away however when I saw how his voice changed depending on each song's mood. Big Wreck's Grace Street album is a work of art!
I’m glad to see Ian getting his flowers! I dig everything he’s done. Would love to see a deep dive on someone like Daniel Johns sometime - (particularly Neon Ballroom-thru present 😎)
Thank you Chris for bringing this man to others' attention. HIGHLY underrated musician I've followed for years and have also seen live three times now. Thank you so much for covering him. How he's able to both sing and be a killer guitarist on stage is mind blowing. Seeing any Big Wreck show live is never a waste. I highly encourage anyone that wants great live quality to see this band.
It's been mentionned before, but another singer in the same vein is Ritchie Kotzen. He's got an official live on youtube from a few years ago that's truly great!
I've seen Ian sing live 3 times and he's always mind blowing. One of the best ever to do it. Fun fact he was invited to be Velvet Revolver singer first before Scott Weiland but Slash didn't want him to play guitar in the band since that was, "his," thing.
what kind of dumbshit wants ian thornley to join his band and not play guitar?....that's like wanting tom brady to play on your team, but not be the quarterback.
I saw Big Wreck 2 weeks ago in Toronto and I can safely say that Slash’s “thing” doesn’t come close to what Ian can do! It’s not exaggerating to say he’s one of the best and most versatile guitarists I’ve heard!
Just thank you. I try to apply your analyzing techniques to Ian’s voice all the time, he’s just so good… and those guitar skills. I know I said it already, but he is an assassin. Going to see them December 2nd, can’t wait. We would be pals Chris, your taste in music is awesome! Keep up the great work.
Amazing! Ian has a great voice. Great tips on how to strategically plan out your voice to last when performing. Great video! Sorry to hear it was blocked at first, but great that it was eventually posted after some adjustments.
THANK YOU! Ian might be one of the best musicians ever, the way he can play guitar and sing like he does at the same time. And he’s amazing to watch live
@@chrisliepe I was very fortunate to go watch him front row with my dad at a concert, Chris his hands are so freaking veiny and strong from playing guitar, it’s incredible.
I'm glad this band is finally starting to get more recognition across in other parts of the country. I first saw the video for The Oaf back when it first aired on MTVs "12 Angry Viewers". The show is irrelevant, but they essentially laughed it off, and it never took off from there. Well thankfully I tuned in that day, bc otherwise there's no chance I would have ever heard of them and appreciated them at such a young age.
I saw them in 2018, went to a meet n greet before the gig and stood 3 feet from Ian for the gig, they were on a 2 ft high stage. Was 4th show since 98 but least enjoyable since the volume was INSANE. Except for the quiet songs and guitar interludes, which were wowzers
Would love to see an interview going into detail about how someone like Ian actually thinks in terms of building a song like this, with so many nuances. Do they actually put as much thought into it, as you do when dissecting it, or is it more an experience thing, where they pull from their skills they’ve built over the years and just “feel” it out as the song builds?
Man, this exact song has been a benchmark for how my high notes are doing for years. So glad you got to it, there's so much subtleties that I've been missing.
Big Wreck songs are always fun to sing. This isn't even the most challenging vocal on this album. "Voices" is the leading track and it's crazy. Takes so much command of all parts of your range.
ILMO has always been my favorite album from them as well. It's just so raw and powerful. It also has a dark character to it that a love. The newer stuff isn't as dark. Maybe Ian is happier now.. and I hope he is. 😊

Wow!! Thanks a lot!!! Chris You are a the best teacher on this field!!! Hope to work with you soon 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Ian’s voice when he goes higher always reminded me of this natural mix of Chris Cornell and Myles Kennedy, while never ripping off either of them.
He toured with and is friends with Myles. He's credited Myles with helping him learn how to control his naturally great voice so he doesn't blow it out
Yesssss

Ian Thornley: The Canadian Chris Cornell!
I’m glad to see Ian getting his flowers! I dig everything he’s done. Would love to see a deep dive on someone like Daniel Johns sometime - (particularly Neon Ballroom-thru present 😎)
YES CHRIS, I remember hearing So Far So Good by Thornley in 2004 when Come Again came out, still one of my favorite songs to this day
Enjoy!
Thornely wasn't too jazzed on how those albums came out due to the heavy, cheese-soaked, production of Chad Kroeger, he of Nickelhack infamy.
What a phenomenal talent Thornley is.
Agreed!
Also, thanks for what you do Chris! The way you break things down is so easy to follow. Really appreciate all your hard work@@chrisliepe

So glad you're covering Big Wreck! They are so fkn underrated and the vocals are so unique
Thank you for this, Chris. Ian is a monster. Been a HUGE Big Wreck fan forever. Suggestion for next analysis - Bob Seger?
It's been mentionned before, but another singer in the same vein is Ritchie Kotzen. He's got an official live on youtube from a few years ago that's truly great!
I really like Ritchie!
I would love to hear him review the Live in Brazil concert, that might be the best vocal performance I've ever heard from Kotzen!
@@chrisliepe please react to the live version of Fooled Around and Fell in Love he does with the Winery Dogs. Killer version! Cheers from Brazil!
@@Weloz92 that bootleg is mind blowing! He was insane! Both on vocals and guitar. The man is a legend!
Dead-on Julien.

Slash "Sorry, we can't hire you. Your just 10x better playing guitar than me."
I saw Big Wreck 2 weeks ago in Toronto and I can safely say that Slash’s “thing” doesn’t come close to what Ian can do! It’s not exaggerating to say he’s one of the best and most versatile guitarists I’ve heard!
Ian is one of the greatest singers living today, I hope you do even more analysis on him!
He can sing and his guitar playing is nuts. Great band Big Wreck
Just thank you. I try to apply your analyzing techniques to Ian’s voice all the time, he’s just so good… and those guitar skills. I know I said it already, but he is an assassin. Ian Thornley is one of the few real rock singers left. I have been inspired by him since I heard the “in loving memory” record. #bigwreck
Amazing! Ian has a great voice. Great tips on how to strategically plan out your voice to last when performing. Great video! Sorry to hear it was blocked at first, but great that it was eventually posted after some adjustments.
Ya it's a bummer, but at least people get to see it!
Yes! Absolutely! Thanks again.
Yes Richie Kotzen is my favorite all around singer , can you please comment on Richie's techniques and range , much appreciated ....
If you haven't checked out Big Wrecks Pleasure and Greed album, please do as Myles Kennedy and Ian Thornley have some fun on it!
Hell yes. Ian is so underrated. Spot on as always. Thanks Chris!
I've been a fan of his for 20 years and Just can't figure out why he's not more well known.
THANK YOU! Ian might be one of the best musicians ever, the way he can play guitar and sing like he does at the same time. And he’s amazing to watch live
He's a BEAST live... one of the best live performers out there
@@chrisliepe I was very fortunate to go watch him front row with my dad at a concert, Chris his hands are so freaking veiny and strong from playing guitar, it’s incredible.
Great video. Would love to see you do another Ian Thornley video. Have a look at some Hey Mama preformances.
Awesome, Ian's great!
Edit after watching: This was truly enlightening, thank you for this!
He's amazing... thanks for watching!
Such a great voice and outstanding musician... I would love to see Big Wreck at least once in my life, but they never tour Europe :(
Ya they are an incredible force!
I've seen interviews with Ian from GB and Germany, so I'm assuming that they have good Europe
I'm glad this band is finally starting to get more recognition across in other parts of the country.

It's a great song!
For me its Diggin' In. That F5 at the end is something I can just barely reach at times.
Awesome and entertaining and educational to watch you!
Underated musician and singer ...and band also !
Ian’s style is amazing! Dude can belt out notes with the best of them! He can also bring on moments of chills with ease. Check out “Useless.”
This is a great breakdown… thank you
you're the best Chris!! hahah/ Love these videos!! Kotzen will be bad ass. The Cornell lineage will be a trilogy!
YES
Yeees!
Man of your word.
Thanks Chris
:)
Heyyyyyyyyy I was there!!! That show was fucking incredible.
Thanks for more Thornley!
Have you checked out Bjorn Strid from Soilwork yet? You'd get à kick out of him for sure!
I really got into Soilwork a couple years ago... great band!
@@chrisliepe Hang on. Are you aware of his other band The Night Flight Orchestra? All clean singing.
Big Wreck songs are always fun to sing. This isn't even the most challenging vocal on this album. "Voices" is the leading track and it's crazy. Takes so much command of all parts of your range.
Can you check out Ryan Tedder from One Republic? His voice is really interesting.
Have no idea who this guy, is but just learned a neat little vocal trick. Thanks Chris Liepe.
NICE
You gotta go check out his band Big Wreck. You're in for a treat
He reminds me of Chris Cornell
9:39 - This technique is called Boyish Delight :)
hehe :)
Can you do a video about Brandon Boyd preferably when it was at its peak at around 2004
After Cornell, this guy is incredible
Their best album is hands down “In Loving Memory Of...” The Oaf is just an incredible rock track. Absolute timeless banger!
ILMO has always been my favorite album from them as well. It's just so raw and powerful. It also has a dark character to it that a love. The newer stuff isn't as dark. Maybe Ian is happier now.. and I hope he is. 😊
What were the songs used in this video
Locomotive is the name of the song I analyzed. :)
Comment for da algorithm
Streak count: 132
Did some distortion practice today and got a bit excited. Now, my throat hurts 😂😂 whoops
Good on the excitement at least!! :) Rest up!
No auto tuner here.
Nope. Ian’s ears are ridiculous.
He sounds like Chris Cornell
