    When it comes to advanced singing techniques like mixed voice, distortion, grit and better range, it's best to go to the source and pick the brains of people who have actually achieved what you want to achieve!
    Ian Thornley from Big Wreck has had a phenomenal career as a vocalist who's live range spans D2 - F#5 ...!!! And he uses that range with a dialed-in mixed voice and healthy, consistent vocal distortion!
    Ian is a Baritone, someone with a naturally lower, thicker voice who can sing higher than most Tenors because he has learned to feel out different resonances and care for his voice in ways that encourages perpetual growth and discovery!
    Join me as I learn how Ian has crafted a voice over the years that just keeps getting better (when other voices in similar styles seem to be getting worse)!
    You'll learn some best practices for your own voice and pursuits in the process!

    Just noticed (and some of you did too... SORRY) that the audio cuts out from about 1:45 - 1:57... The rest of the video sounds fine. So sorry for that glitch! I was asking him in that section if there was ever a time when he felt like his voice was very limited, and he says "yes, mainly when I just wanted to be a guitar player and didn't experiment that much) Then we get back on track!

      Great singer. Please can you tell what the first song in the video is before Albatross. I am listening to more and more of this and it's probably the first band, music and voice I have naturally connected with for a long time. As a guitarist that has always struggled with my voice, it's a huge thing and so glad you actually got him to chat to! Thank you

    Love to see Ian give props to Myles Kennedy. Myles is such a student of the voice. I’ve heard Kennedy often pump Thornley’s tires too. They obviously have a mutual respect for each other and are both fantastic top tier rock vocalists. Would be great to see/hear a collaboration some day!👍

      That’s very reassuring. I think I’m still trapped in the phase where I can hit the notes (for the most part), but it tends to fall apart when I try to actually articulate some by adding the consonants. Did you experience similar? Is this common, for the notes first to be accessed, then the ability to flesh it out and turn it into actual words coming much later down the line? I’m guessing it breaks down to part coordination, part strength?

    I notice that you can see when you find something he mentions that you really want to talk about and I really appreciate that you let him finish what he was saying before you go into it. This video was very informative and I love getting the raw process of how he became a great singer. It feels very motivating to see how normal it was. One nit pick, I don't understand why baritones are often referred to as a "low voice". As an example, you can be called a baritone if your lowest note is a G2 but as a low bass, G2 is my speaking voice and I can go at least an octave lower. I would love something similar with an actual low voice

    great video! i reckon you should do a video on the part at 13:45 , how over use of voice or wrong techniques can change the timbre of your voice and strip you of range and technique in the long run. elton john and bono are both good examples of it, elton more from substance abuse and a surgery in the 80s but still interesting to compare his baritone opera sound today to his iconic early 70s twang, then bono who used to belt out high notes as loud as he could night after night and often with grit until the 90s, where he became more 'dry throat' sounding, and slowly lost his range thru the 2000s until 2009 it miraculously came back for the 360 tour, then disappeared again by the following tour along with his grit, vocal fry, falsetto etc and now sings very simply, some songs in lower keys and without as much power. of course age has a play in it all as well but then theres guys like steven tyler who still has the same timbre and all the technique as he always has and could sing everything in the same key until only very recently. would be cool to see a comparison video on this kinda thing with references on ways to maintain your timbre and sing easily with technique without losing it from improper support etc

    This was fascinating. He finds hitting high notes clean more challenging than hitting them with distortion. At the same time, (if I understood correctly), sometimes people cut back on the distortion live compared to on the album to save their "vocal budget." It's so complex!
    Is there any advantage to being a baritone in hard rock or metal? People don't sing low because it would get buried by the loud guitars and bass, right? The only guys I know of that sing low sing low are found in mellower music, like Johnny Cash, where he didn't have to be heard over a wall of Marshalls.

    • @nostringsattachedmusic
      @nostringsattachedmusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That does seem to be the common wisdom. However, with a smart setup and a good sound engineer, particularly with today's gear, a lower voice type should be able to be mixed and monitored well enough to cut through the jam. The easiest example I can think of is the dude from the band HIM, definitely a hard rock sound, but piercing low vocals that cut through the mix. It can be tough to avoid feedback, but if everybody's going digital and/or using in ear monitor systems you can get the low voice mic dialed in more easily than with the old fashioned "marshall stacks and wedges" approach.

    • @russellspear6188
      @russellspear6188 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nostringsattachedmusic What's the key to getting vocals like the vocalist from HIM to cut through the mix when recording?

    • @nostringsattachedmusic
      @nostringsattachedmusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, I must admit I'm not very knowledgeable about mixing, but I'm often in the studio when the engineers are doing their thing! My guess would be that the key concepts are good mic and preamp selection and clever EQ. Also I think that being clever about the choice of instruments could help. For example, sprinkly guitar sounds that come from Vox style amps, Ricks, and other semi-hollows will pair well against a lower voice. You don't want too many things competing for the same sonic space, right? Mind you I could be totally wrong here, but I've noticed that this balanced approach works in performance. If I'm singing in the lower register I go high with my chord voicings, this gives me some room to play in without getting nudged out by the honking mids.

    • @nostringsattachedmusic
      @nostringsattachedmusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, and another thing, sometimes it might be less about mixing and more about composition. I was the low guy in my band back in the day with three singers. How to cut through? Just create space in the instrumentals during the verses, then fill it up with harmonies during the loud choruses! Here's a couple examples:

  • @RhiannonTyler

    It’s always strange as a soprano hearing the struggle of baritones/ basses wanting to sing like tenors. Sopranos often struggle to get the tones of altos, baritones, and grit. I find it’s better to find the best option to get the note you want in the mix, in my case it might mean doubling my vocal with a gritty acoustic violin, or playing the sustained midrange on guitar instead of singing it or using an octave effect. Another thing to consider is higher notes become irritating much faster, there are a lot of professional successful artists I prefer not to listen to because they seem to dwell in a frequency range that I find sufferable, I might even like the song but can’t bear to listen to it because of the key it’s in and their note selection 🤷‍♀️

    • @rafaeljannotti3002
      @rafaeljannotti3002 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Its a simple matter. Most famous rock and even pop songs are in the tenor range. It is what it is. In an ideal world that wouldnt be the case, but thats what we have in this one. I dont understand why some people get so puzzled, the reasons are very, very evident. Even in opera tenors are the most generally praised singers. Some people just don't want to be niche singers so they will try to adapt. Its the same reason so many people want to be conventionally attractive. Its the state where you will get more direct benefits, and unfortunately, no amount of good intentions and wishful thinking can change that.

In the same way people can get rigid with classical approach to voice..... And don't explore and play..... You can get overly rigid against more traditional vocal conditioning approach. Which is actually fun and musical for some people.

    Learning how to mix is weird for baritones and lower. I think we get accustomed to singing super chesty and dark (a lot of us sing bass for vocal groups) and as a result we have a harder time understanding that you can thin out your voice up high and create a bridge between head and chest. It’s a process

    My vocal budget is often flat busted so I have arranged for a loan for a voice by arranging my songs also as solo guitar pieces. that way the bad sounds don't need to be made. The result is guitar parts that are far too difficult to sing along to and play accurately at the same time. I use synth string, flute and choir pads to back ground the noise floor (GR 20/ Mel 9). reverb, EQ, delay (slap back) Chorus. I'm a guitar guy but I get sucked into singing and end up sounding like cats being abused. You say that around 70 the male voice changes again? I'm almost there, I have wrestled the vocal Demond for many decades. I will just continue to struggle because if I don't get it by now I never will and if I stop trying I will just die.
