    Learn from a road-tested, career-long healthy, rangy and incredibly talented singer! I get to talk with Big Wreck vocalist Ian Thornley about what his full, regular vocal warmup routine looks like --And It's quite extensive!
    He strategically jumps back and forth from pre-planned vocal exercises and warming up his guitar fingers. Then he spends time working with his musical mind while he coaxes his voice into serving his inspiration while performing live.
    Ian says, that if he's warmed up correctly, his voice actually feels BETTER after a long night of singing than when he started the show! He's figured out how to do lots of things right!
    Learn from Ian to save your voice and bring it to it's maximum potential for performing... Especially if you're like him and have a naturally lower voice and are trying to reach higher notes!

    Ian’s songwriting, vocals, and guitar work are all top-tier. I’m hoping his increased exposure on channels such as yours get him and BW the recognition they deserve. I’m always very happy to hear/see him, so thank you for having him on. He doesn’t open up easily, so this was a rare treat. Ian: I’ve seen you many times in Canada, and appreciate your body of work! Drummer says "that sounds stupid lol" Now I remember when I first started singing , or trying to sing as a kid, and my drummer saying the same thing. These things will haunt a singer thinking we can't sing. I took his opinion seriously but it messed me up thinking for so many years I wasn't any good lol. Great video Chris

      I so agree. the hardest part of me trying to improve on my singing, or like, say, cutting vocal tracks, here at home, is the self-consciousness I get, over what the family is going to experience, upstairs, and the impending ridicule I have waiting for me, when I'm done. I've tried to "prepare" them for the noises, explaining that they are not hearing things in proper context, but it still happens. It really dampens any possible progress. I may have to resort to the detached garage, once winter breaks. 😄

    Hi Chris, any chance you could do a video on Cedric Bixler-Zavala? He's an interesting singer, going from an aggressive punk vocal (At The Drive In) to clean, skyscraping belts and falsetto (Mars Volta) and later a nice distorted rock sound (Antemasque). You can find isolated vocals for One Armed Scissor and L'Via L'Viaquez online. Cheers :)

    Hey Chris, I have a random question. It pertains more to deathcore vocals if you can help, but is it safe to whisper scream? As in using the mouth shapes and kinda using the muscles, but just pushing enough air to make a very quiet airy sound (like very quietly whispering) to use to practice mouth shapes/nasal openness/air flow practice? It might be a stupid question but I’d rather be safe than sorry lol

    As usual, another great video from Chris. I HAVE A REQUEST: Chris the terms Open Throat and Compression (also called cord closure by some) is discussed a lot on youtube singing videos. Can you actually do both at the same time while singing? Aren't Open Throat and Compression (also called cord closure by some) opposite of each other? I just can't figure out which to use or if both can be used at the same time. Any thoughts or maybe even a video explaining......Thanks

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This deserves some clarification for sure! ...A great idea for a video. Short answer: You can apply the open throat technique AND compression at the same time. Also, compression and cord closure should be thought of as completely different things. You can have full cord engagement and closure whether you are employing compression or not!

    Hey Chris, do you mind if i ask you a question about my voice?
    im having an issue on my voice, i just feel that my voice is so thin and weak in the higher notes, so i searched for a solution and i read somewhere on the internet that you can thicken your voice by sounding a higher notes with a vocal fry only.
    A few days later when i tried to sing a higher notes in a song there was a weird distortion which doesnt sound good, is it because the vocal fry is the wrong solution or is it just my voice trying to adapt?
    im about to have an informal singing performance this weekend, but its been months since my last actual voice exercise and training, do you have some videos to help me prepare?
    thanks a lot chris

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Rav! I think it's not vocal fry you're looking for but learning to moderate your airflow with the proper use of compression! This can result in a slightly "fry-like" sound but it isn't vocal fry. Check out any of my videos on compression or airflow to help with this... Also, join my free voice course where I help you dial in the support necessary to use compression correctly!
