I struggled to wake up early for years. It wasn’t until recently I found a solution that works. We all have hobbies or things we want to do but we put them off because more important things take precedence. One for me is video games. I like playing video games but I’m a grown man with responsibilities. How can I justify playing video games when I’ve got a long list of productive things to do? It seems like a waste of time. But then I sleep in for hours and waste even more time than I would’ve spent playing. So I’ve been getting up at 4 am everyday, playing video games for an hour, and then going on with my day. Yeah I might have “wasted” an hour playing games but now I’m up. I gained several hours I would’ve otherwise spent sleeping that I can now do more productive things. I do it every day so my mind knows first thing in the morning it’s gonna get that reward and it makes it easier to get up. Maybe it’s weak minded, but hey, it’s better than sleeping in. Also once you start waking up early you start getting tired earlier in the evening and it’s easier to go to bed on time and the cycle continues. Makes the habit easier.
I know so many people might disagree with me or what not but hey man, if you find playing video games enjoyable or stress relieving or a way of escaping for even just an hour, then go play some video games. If they make you feel good and give you enjoyment, then it’s not “a waste of time”. Just because you’re not out there making money or whatever, doesn’t mean it’s a waste of time!

The night before setting out all the gear knowing I have to be quiet so I don’t wake the spouse, out the door by 0400 and ready to hit the door by 0600. Most alert days ever even though it starts out very quiet and peaceful it is absolutely focused. Great podcast keep them coming
I love how echo puts in more mic time now. He used to be very quiet and let jocko do all the talking but now he gives a good counter balance to jockos remarks.

I wake up at 4 am. Every day. On my work day it gives me time to clear my head, have a coffee, check the news, make my lunch etc. On my day off I still get up at 4 but the day is mine. I don't have to think about work, can take my time and plan my day. Sleeping late takes time away . Thats my routine and works for me. But I do sleep by 9pm or so.
love this guy Jocko you're the man and thank you for all of the motivation and inspiration, I'm finally getting my life together, it's amazing how your words affect physical reality :)
Marine Vet. here...love the vibes of this podcast. It feels like you're in the room with two of your favorite leaders without the fear of being fucked up haha
I’m a veteran, 9 ½ years in the army, so getting up early was bred into us. However, I found getting up early is overrated and individualized. I run a lot, up to 75 miles a week, and I also love working out very late at night, 11 pm, 12 am, etc., that is when I love to run when very few cars are on the road and I belong to a 24-hr. gym, so going to the gym in the middle of the night works for me. I had a job with flexible hours at the time. But several months ago I secured a better paying job where I have to be in standard hours like 9-5, so in order to work out I have to get up each day at 5 or 6. Both scenarios worked for me, so as long as you get your 7 or 8 hours sleep and your day is productive, it doesn’t matter when you wake up for the say. I do miss running long runs at 1 or 2 am, which I did for a few years, something very majestic at that time of night and I live in a very safe suburban area, and never had any problems. But now I do my long weekend run during the late afternoon and boy do I sometimes hate being around so many people and cars. LMAO 😂
echo shrugged off the last point but that might be the gold nugget of this whole video. Delaying gratification will build your character like no other.
I've had my life mostly fall apart since I got out of the army, but one thing I never let go was getting up early. My depression is so much easier to handle when I'm on a routine regardless of having something to do. I always get up at 0400-0500 everyday, even weekends. I don't have a spouse, only as dog. At this point, I get up without an alarm at the right times.
One tip I found by accident for being alert in the morning... Within 15 minutes of waking up, drink at least a litre of water. I run a nearly identical schedule to Jocko's and that's the deciding factor on whether I drive to work tired or not regardless of whether I have a morning coffee which I usually don't. I never made the connection to carbs tho. I'll have to explore that. Also the power nap idea is amazing. 7 minutes has always been my perfect number. And I always set 2 alarms but I don't know why. Second one never rings. I'm a very deep sleeper but it's never more than 15 seconds from when my alarm starts till I'm standing. And I use the quietest alarm in my phone with volume on low. It's called discipline.

Get a wind-up clock. That thing will wake you up from a coma. You do need to wind it up every day, though, at least I did. 4 years ago my wife left me and took the kids after I lost a big job. I was deeply religious and prayed and fasted for 14 days straight. I had crones disease, overweight, and was diabetic. I lost 40 lbs and both sicknesses went away before the 14 days ended.
@Nancy dude I've gone ten days fasting, myself. 25-30 is where it becomes deadly. Diabetes can be 'cured' with weight loss. Have you never noticed that type 2 diabetes patients are almost exclusively fat fucks? Crones symptoms are exascerbated by weight gain and diet. Everyone in my family has diabetes and IBS/ crones. My grandparents and uncle died from complications related. Organ failure, foot/leg amputation, etc. They were fat fucks also. Since I'm predisposed to it, I'm careful. They are 'curable' in the sense that if you treat it properly, it won't happen to you.

I had the brilliant idea to use “Wake up and move forward” from psychological warfare as my alarm. I keep my phone on silent all the time and forgot to check the alert volume. I promise you that Jocko saying “Get up and get up now” at full volume, 8 inches from your head will wake up even the most sound sleeper at 4:30am. Also counted as my cardio for the day.
I am a reconstructive surgeon and in surgical residency I had to wake up at 4:00 every day. I have continued that ever since and thank Jocko for advocating waking early. Getting your workout in and other critical things done while it’s quiet and there are no distractions is a great way to start the day. Unexpected things come up for all of us throughout the day and so it also prevents your workout from getting derailed.
I’ve been waking up at 3am because I’ve raised two puppies back to back so you have to get them out to pee. Since then I realized I have 4.5 hours before work to get my stuff done -and get kids ready for school. It’s so nice.
I personally don't like the watch alarm because I have the ability to just turn it off or hit snooze. I get up easier if I have to physically get out of bed to go turn off my alarm

Key to waking up early for me has been Prep every needed item for the day ahead the night before Alarm at 4am: Keep my morning tasks simple and easy. I don’t bust into waking up at 4am and think I’m gonna go for a 10 mi ruck...I build my way up there from something small easy and something I’m not afraid of...

Yes this is the fucking truth. Ppl pat themselves on the back as if waking at 5am is in and of itself some big productive achievement... when it’s not lol. What matter is what you do with your waking hours. Whether you wake at 5am or fucking 12pm lol
@@christophersurnname9967 No. Point of waking up early is giving yourself a big challange every single morning. Because it is so easy to put your head back to the pillow. By forcing yourself to wake up when your are too comfortable you increase your will and dicipline. And another thing is (atleast for my opinion) nights are not productive at all. You are more tired. Ext. And by waking up early you finish the task you need to do by the time most people get up. This feels great. And you are more likely to make the day count.
For Alarms, especially when I’m traveling and sharing rooms, I use the soundtrack of the movie INTERSTELLAR for my alarms. All the music is very soft and cosmic.. I wake up 8 to 10 seconds after it starts floating in my ears..

I'm late to the party and just discovering Jocko. Love the advice, thanks or that! Regarding carbohydrates, he is referring to processed carbohydrates like sugar, flour, syrup, etc. Whole plant food is pure carbohydrates and absolutely not the same to your body as refined/processed carbohydrates. The only time you need refined carbs is any time you plan to burn it all off - like during exercise.
I feel the same way about food. It’s inconvenient. I usually do 1 meal a day. Eat a good meal an hour before Jui Jitsu. Protein shake after wards. That’s perfect.
I always have a moderate amount of coffee after my workout (2 hours after waking up) so I'm coasting on wake-up cortisol during the workout and then caffeine isn't interfering with it. Net-net, great effect.
How found that meditating for 30-90 min a day has reduced my need for sleep, I have now for a month straight just woken up naturally at 05 and being so tired in the evening I'm in bed at 22- 22.30 at the latest. Feeling much more relaxed and aware of my surroundings than ever before as well. Cant praise it enough. Edit: paragraphs
@@mikemihay Only my Spotify app to search 'meditation music' and several playlists pop up. Have my favorite of course. Just learn the proper breathing technique as you through 'Kundalini breathing'(a type of old yoga/meditation)you'll end up breathing so deep, slowly and controlled your lungs can expand up to 8 times. Breathing this way and 4 or less times a minute will automatically put you in a meditative state while increasing the secretion from your pineal gland flooding your body and mind with all those good hormones and oxygen rich blood. Your blood gets extra, extra oxygen rich which is really good for you, by proper breathing. To sum up the breathing you breath in and out with you nose or in nose/ out of mouth, start by filling your stomach up from bottom all the way up to your chest and collar bone, trust me you'll feel it when doing it correct. Hold breath for a short while, not until you get dizzy then exhale from top of collar bone down to stomach. Key is to breathe with your stomach not your chest, stomach going out when breathing in and in when breathing out. Namaste.

The night before setting out all the gear knowing I have to be quiet so I don’t wake the spouse, out the door by 0400 and ready to hit the door by 0600. Most alert days ever even though it starts out very quiet and peaceful it is absolutely focused. Great podcast keep them coming

My appreciation for Jocko is absolutely yes factor.
How does it take time away?
Finally, suddenly at a place where I can integrate these practical tips into my life, apply them, live them. Thank you Jocko.

LMAO 😂
Iron Swan is such a savage track. You've just sent me back a decade, thanks Jocko.
echo shrugged off the last point but that might be the gold nugget of this whole video. Delaying gratification will build your character like no other.
"I'm not a doctor. I'm a knucklehead."

Love ❤️ it !
Hope you’re doing well ❤️
Thanks for your service man. Hope you’re getting better
Alarm sounds Jocko Recommended:

Get a wind-up clock. That thing will wake you up from a coma. You do need to wind it up every day, though, at least I did.
On the other hand even something quiet works really well if it winds up into something. I used Dio - Holy Diver as my alarm for a long time. After a while I woke up before the actual song started. ( th-cam.com/video/BxYQo43dw00/w-d-xo.html )
Grave Digger - William Wallace
Don't ask 🤘🏼
highly recommend trying Samurai Sword from the Microphones, no better alarm song imo.

4 years ago my wife left me and took the kids after I lost a big job. I was deeply religious and prayed and fasted for 14 days straight.
I had crones disease, overweight, and was diabetic. I lost 40 lbs and both sicknesses went away before the 14 days ended.
I doubt it. Like 100% doubt it.
@@jamesanderson2236 heaven forbid your world of understanding be challenged.
They are 'curable' in the sense that if you treat it properly, it won't happen to you.
it's called weight loss, the praying is just talking to yourself.

Truth is, Jocko wakes his alarm
A fitbit or smartwatch will vibrate for an alarm, which isn't audible to your spouse. My weapon of choice.
I sleep right through that vibrating alarm lol
Put it on your weiner, it will wake you right up for sure
It also means it can safely be ignored. That's a negative, you need that 'oh shit' adrenaline rush to get you up and moving before it's TOO LATE
I personally don't like the watch alarm because I have the ability to just turn it off or hit snooze. I get up easier if I have to physically get out of bed to go turn off my alarm
Yep, Garmin has been waking me up silently for years now. I have an audible phone alarm set for 3 minutes later on the other side of the room. That motivates me to get out of the bed.
Longest recorded controlled fast was in 1974. An over weight man under supervision fasted for 382 days. He started around 450 lbs and ended at 180! 🙌
How was this possible? Were they giving him and i.v. drip of supplements or something? That's crazy!
@@mphase7575 It was possible because he had 270lbs of fat energy at 3200 cals per pound! He was medically supervised, they supplemented him with vitamins. If you do the math he had over 2000 cals/day available from fat.

11:49 "food is for the weak" is the most Jocko thing I've heard Jocko say
Key to waking up early for me has been
Prep every needed item for the day ahead the night before
Alarm at 4am:
Keep my morning tasks simple and easy. I don’t bust into waking up at 4am and think I’m gonna go for a 10 mi ruck...I build my way up there from something small easy and something I’m not afraid of...
“It’s so convenient to eat all the time.” I feel the same way. This three meal default modern structure needs to be further examined to find the optimal for health and state of well-being.
Everybody is different
3 meals a day is just a baseline
While an athlete may need 5-6
two large meals a day and a morning run
Jocks is a beast , yet he seems exceedingly sweet, polite, kind...he is considerate towards his spouse. A model of a gentleman. Also, filled with thoughtful and sound advice.
I sleep 7 hours. It doesn't matter what time I wake up. I still have 17 hours to be productive. What matters is cutting out time-wasting activities.
... which there are many of in most lives. Good point too
Yes this is the fucking truth.
Give some examples. Is reading wasted time to you?

I'm late to the party and just discovering Jocko. Love the advice, thanks or that! Regarding carbohydrates, he is referring to processed carbohydrates like sugar, flour, syrup, etc. Whole plant food is pure carbohydrates and absolutely not the same to your body as refined/processed carbohydrates. The only time you need refined carbs is any time you plan to burn it all off - like during exercise.

Do you use an app to meditate ?
Namaste.
