Unfortunately I have a crooked collarbone thats higher on one side than the other. A result of a previous crash on the street. (I never got it plated for some reason, I’m not sure why cause I should have) Anyway the point is that I have a neck brace and it just doesn’t fit right, cause it rests on the bump in my collarbone.

I did not have enough momentum to get up and over the little hill between the trails. I was not moving but I could not react the ground at that point and by the time I could reach the ground I could no longer stop the falling of the bike. She is a big Ktm 690 (sorry I don't ride motocross lol) Anyway the back handle on the bike went down the back of my leg. I thought I was fine, a little sore but good. Rode all day. I had 3 nights where sleep was difficult and my leg was purple from mid calf to heel. This went away and there was a large scab area and the pain was gone. I continued riding for 2 months and no problem. Then one day I noticed that the scab was looking really bad and I got it looked at and treated daily. With in a week I was in the hospital wondering if I would lose my leg or worse! I found out that the injury had caused the skin and stuff to pull away from the blood supply which resulted in necrotizing fasciitis. (Flesh eating disease) to set in. Hospital for 3 days and another week of intravenous antibiotics daily. All in all from injury to a healed massive scar on my leg it was over 6 months of open wound. I wasn't even moving at the time of the injury and if I had proper boots it would never have happened. WEAR ALL THE GEAR, ALL THE TIME!!
well I hope you are healed up and all good now, that sounded like a horrible experience to go through, also great advice, I once took my Harley for a quick ride around the block and had a kangaroo bounce out in front of me and I ended up super manning over the handlebars, luckily at only doing 60km/h but unluckily I was only in jeans, t-shirt, and sandshoes nothing else no helmet no boots, it was the last time I be that stupid when riding
@@ggsgaga yes all healed up now! Good to hear you made it through your mistake. It only takes one bad ride without your gear and your life can be changed forever. Ride safe my friend!
Rod Neufeld wow ive always heard stories on like staged medical tv shows about flesh eating diseases but never thought you could get it from a little wreck on a bike like that ,thats pretty scary
All the gear all the time! When I was learning to ride I dripped the bike at only about 10mph but landed in just the right way to tear my MCL, and sprain my ACL and ankle very bad. I couldn't walk for a week and still to this day my left leg moves a little different then my right while I'm walking
I started riding in 74 at the age of 10. Helmet, jeans, shirt and tennis shoes. My Dad told me to wear my hiking boot, but what did he know? Not many Dads rode back then, till we grew up. But a beer truck driver told me he used to race TT races, and I should wear some boots. I was good for about 10 years, noting but bumps and scrapes. Then I raced MX for 10 years and got banged up a bit more, (riding gear then). But as far as hospital work, that only happened twice. Broken arm and a broke foot that I let heal by itself, (in between jobs, no insurance.) It still works good. Today, it is not the injury as much as it is finding a good Doctor who knows the best thing to do. They often mess things up today, and things often get worse. Government run healthcare, and kids who think they know it all,---at your service.
Back in the day when I drove motocross in Finland, it was required on all tracks to use every single safety gear you listed, and also elbow protection and a kidney belt. Also the neck protector saved my life once when I hit a bad jump and the bike started tilting forwards in the air. I fell staight onto my head and it would have probably broken if it wasn’t for the neck protector
Everytime I fall (which is alot) I am glad I spent the money to be outfitted properly. Father's who have young kids starting out need to make sure their kids wear *all* of their pads *and* boots. And set an example and wear your gear too. No matter how hot it is, wear it for them. Also buy your kids hockey shoulder pads. You can find them for less than half the price of the dirt bike brands. My sons pads have D30 in them and they were only $25. The Fox ones are $40.
Great advice! I taught and made my sons years ago to wear all their safety gear years ago and we have never been seriously hurt although I broke ribs with one of those plastic type chest protectors ( no side protection). Don't forget to replace worn out equipment. Thanks guys for all your tips.
I crashed going pretty fast not too long ago, I had a neck brace on and I felt my head smack against the back pretty hard. It did hurt my collar bone a little but I think it saved my a lot of trouble with my neck. Would recommend 👍
The braces are for hyperextensions. but what if you fall? You automatically straighten your palms to catch yourself. However, the braces limit the movement in hyperextension, so in this example you would break your fingers rather than your wrist. Do you understand what I mean ?
With regard to chest/back protection, it's worth making the distinction between the basic, plastic "roost deflector" and actual CE armor that is rated for impact protection (level II, preferably). If you can afford it, get the latter (but as always, anything is better than nothing). I wear a Leatt mesh jacket that has CE Protection for the chest, back, shoulders and elbows. The stretchy mesh keeps the armor where it's needed. It also has a slot in the back that a Leatt neck brace will slide into...that way pressure from the neck brace is distributed across the back protector and that'll *hopefully* prevent the back injury you suffered (sorry, BTW). It's all about building a coherent system that distributes forces over as wide an area as possible, and vectors them in ways that avoid or minimize injury. For instance, MX boots will protect your foot and ankle from impacts or bending in ways they shouldn't, but the force is then going to go to your knee which is only designed to bend in one direction. Knee braces help ensure that happens, and transfer forces to your hip which *can* rotate. I wear separate knee pads (with straps) even on the street. Yeah, my ADV pants have them built-in, but they're just sort of "floating" and I have no confidence they'd actually be where I need them in the event of a crash.
Great video, however, Neck Brace...NOT controversial to me. 4 days ago had a 45 mph crash on hard-pack logging road between trails. Brace save my neck and my helmet took a serious digger. Not one stress related muscle strain or stiff neck. 1st crash with the brace and now I will never take it off when riding! It was that good!

As soon as I see the words, "Safety is key", I reject the baby sitter. You should do the same. All I need to do is look at my options, and think about it. Mobility is safety too. Being able to feel the foot controls is safety too. In fact, I have learned that not letting people tell me what my biggest factor is, is usually safer too. I reject the baby sitter! :)
Great vid as always. I just started and bought everything new, but entry-level. Snell HJC helmet on sale, Tech 1's, 100% Accuri's Fox chest, knee, elbow armour, Shot pants etc. - decent to get going but didn't break the bank - all-in for around $500 new. I do have a neck brace that was expensive ($350) but had that already. For sure, wear the right stuff - hospitals are more expensive then gear. One day I'll get proper knee braces but they are uber expensive and I'm not going that hard yet.
Priorities in safety gear (most to least important imo): 1. Helmet (Shoei) 2. Boots (Sidi Crossfire) 3. Goggles (Airbrake) 4. Kneebraces (Ortema) 5. Spine protection (Leatt 3df Airfir) 6. Chest protection (leatt 3df airfit) That's all the safety gear i wear besides pants jersey gloves and underwear of course. The particular stuff I'm wearing is the best stuff on the market for racing, at least imo. I don't wear a Neckbrace, ellbow guards and padded underpants, eventho i used to wear all that when i was a beginner. I'm riding regularly and since I'm riding this gear I didn't have any injuries any more, eventho before, when i was wearing more gear, i got injured regularly (this is probably not correlated to another since i also became a much better and safer rider).
999racing well a neck brace is proven to help with spinal injuries which are the worst that can happen. And a thin Leatt airfit won’t protect your spine either. Back and chestprotectors are classified and a lot of these roost protectors don’t even meet level1
@@simon2625 if you would've done your research you would know that the 3df airfit is rated as level 1 chest and back protector and therefore better than for example the Fox ones most people use or alpinestars a1 just as an example. It's not a level 2 but it's the best compromise between safety and comfort. And as the video told you Neckbraces are very controversial and there is no study or anything with any statistical value on wether they help you or not, so it's completely up to personal choice. I was wearing one and it was restricting me, i fell and smacked it into my neck bruising it for a week (without NB nothing would've happened). Examples like the one in the video, or Marvin Musquins brother who got paralyzed if not by than at least whilst wearing a leatt neck brace just make me believe that they do more damage than good. In addition to that there is also some other arguments for me against neckbraces, which is why i choose not to ride with one and obviously believe that it's the best choice. If friends ask me for advise on wether they should wear one or not, i tell them these exact arguments and that that's the reason i choose not to ride with one any more. But i also tell them that there are other people that believe otherwise and that it's the riders choice and that I'm not telling anyone to ride with or without a neck brace. It's your responsibility because you're the one that eventually ends up in a wheelchair, and i don't wanna hear sth like "but you told me to ride with/without one". Choose for yourself and live with the consequences. And if you want a safe hobby probably consider golf? Lol
This channel is incredible you have covered everything on this channel im a nee rider saving for a bike tried my friends bike out did good and made to jumps because of you but crashed the third due to leaning to far back and the bike took me woth it 😂 let's say i got lucky and landed amd side amd rolled amd got back up quick man im hooked now all i need to do is take it slow amd more technique my friend took me straight to meduim bumps if he didn't i would of had a perfect first ride i been missimg out i now want to practice for a year or two amd race motocross amautuer im 25 and cant believe i just now riding wish i knew how much i liked dirt biking at first was nervous at first but im a natural my friend is saying thanks for letting me ride tony
Well, if the "initial cost" of the gear is a lot, that means you sell your 1 or 2 year old gear when it is still in good enough shape to be sold, (which used to be pretty rare. I don't know now.). So keep it until the skin shows. :)
I wear all the gear mentioned in this video except the neck brace. I wear calf socks, briefs and then spandex compression pants, a t-shirt, then put all the gear on top. Sure it might be a little warmer than skipping some of that but it helps with any rubbing of gear and does keep some of the sweat out of the gear. The compression pants are a natural carry-over for me from wearing them under leathers for drag racing where they help the leathers slide over the knees as the legs come up to the pegs. Even wearing leathers on the street the compression pants are nice. I'm gonna check out the knee braces since my right knee isn't that great anymore. Thanks for the heads-up on that.
Chest protector saved my life a few years ago still wound up with a few broken ribs and a brushed lung/liver but had I not been wearing it I'd have had a punctured lung or possibly worse..... 100% wear your gear and increase you chances of walking away from a bad wipeout
Something you should have added to the helmet section. Always fasten the strap! If you crash its just going to fly off. Speaking of fly. My favourite gear brand. Fly Racing
I'm mostly concerned with my arms and wrists, which you seemed to skip. We use our arms to protect ourselves from falls. Are there good ways to fall? In snowboarding, I've read that you don't want to use your arms in a fall.
If you don’t ride extreme or are taking big jumps, going for time, etc. you don’t need all the gear. If you ride super hard off roading than you should have lot’s of protection but if it’s easier/slower riding with less hazards than all the equipment is not necessary. Mostly if you have a helmet, some good boots of some kind, and some clothes to not get scratched and burned, its mostly fine.
i mean.. it's up to you. it's best to wear the proper gear. i have some easy trails behind my house and i just put on my boots, chest protector, helmet, goggles and gloves. next thing i know i hit a rock and it threw me off the bike and i skidded on my knee for 20ft. it's been 2 months since the crash and my knee is still kinda messed up. and i tore my fingernail off during the crash. hurt like a son of a bitch. hit my head and got a minor concussion, and when i sat up.. i thought my knee was broken. then a week and a half later i but on my riding pants and knee pads, boots, gloves, chest protector, goggles, and helmet thinking i would be fine with just that. i have a little uphill double in my trails and hit it next thing i know i fly over the bars. did a superman onto my belly and slid 10 feet. scrapped my arms all up, now have scars, and scrapped my belly up from when my t- shirt flew up. also hit my head again pretty hard. anymore i learned to wear all my gear. boots, pants, knee pads, shirt, elbow pads, gloves, goggles, helmet, chest protector, and neck brace.
I only have a helmet right now and have received multiple injuries that could have been avoided by wearing safety gear. Today I got 2 deep gashes in my knee because I fell from my bike and something hit my knee. I also have gotten multiple wounds on my ankle and elbow.
I was in a crash a few days ago and after I was in hospital. You need to make sure you wear all the gear my chest protector is cracked right in the middle and my helmet fender is cracket if I didn't have a helmet I could of died so make sure you wear everything
Favorite gear. FXR, helmet-bell, Goggles- Havoc & 100%, roost deflector Astar, boots Astar. Got fox rn but going to switch to astars when i need new boots.
Fly racing helmet Vemar goggles with nose guard 2 Fly racing chest protectors 2 pairs of Fly racing jerseys 2 pairs of Fly racing pants Fly racing boots Thor boots Fly racing gloves I forgot the other brand of gloves I have Edit: the 2nd chest protector is Leatt (made by fly racing)
I’ve gone back to knee pads from braces and feel a lot more comfortable but my knees ache at times when I get a leg ripped up dabbing. I probably just need better, more comfortable knee braces. I’ve seen to many people wearing neck braces get really hurt in what should be a simple tuck and roll fall to believe in them. 🤷🏻♂️ Helmets are also so big on kids in proportion to their bodies that they look so restricted with a neck brace thrown into the mix. I believe that comfort and the ability to move freely forms part of safety and shouldn’t be overlooked.
Normally I ride mostly street. almost 90% highway, but today of all days I got hurt. not from falling or being hit, but from hitting a bird. i smacked that poor thing going pretty fast, got hit right in the arm, felt like I got shot with a nailgun and ripped my hand right off the handlebar. so fast forward a few hours and my arm has a pleasant bruise however the dense jacket seemed to have prevented any serious damage.
I wear T-shirt and shorts, hate wearing jerseys or long sleeve clothes. I ride with just a helmet and boots that’s it, i used to ride with no gear at all, just whatever I have on during the day which is a shirt, short and flip flop and I have not hurt myself yet. I decided to buy a helmet and boots because i got told to, and they were quite comfortable and they are the 2 most important gear. I don’t race or do jump or be silly and normally don’t ride very long either. I am crazy since I started out on a 450 with no gear and decided to get boots helmet when I got my 250 2 stroke.
@Trent williams Obviously your not shipping to Australia, for some reason shipping from the States to Australia seems to be the same price as to what one has bought or in this case, may win
I had that same Fox Chest Protector. I got landed on and now have 3 broken ribs while watching this. Granted without it I may have had a broken back. I did upgrade to the Leatt HD-Pro with side protection.
Hey bro I just bought my first bike. I don’t plan on doing motocross but I just want to ride on flat tracks, open fields, farms and forests etc. Do you think that is much safer than moto cross and the chance of accidents is lower?
I’ve just bought my son a dirt bike to ride on my fields. I’ve also bought him a helmet, gloves and a chest guard with built in neck protection. Do you think he needs boots and trousers? I’m not sure how far I go with it as he be racing anyone or jumping anything. Any advice greatly appreciated
I like MSR Explorer clothing, and Leatt armor and ridding water systems, goggles I like most are Scott’s Prospects, then 100%, CTI2 knee braces and All spots Dynamic wrist braces. Priceless. And Alpinestar tec10.
Im thinking about getting knee braces because last year i tore my ACL not even on a dirt bike i tore it trying to walk across a log fishing and i fell but siting on the couch for 3 months and the other 3 months walking around with a brace and crutches taught me to do whatever i can to be able to have fun but be safe at the same time
oneal is my favorite for jersey, pants, helmets. fly or alpinestar for boots. shift for gloves. fox or leatt for chest protector. leatt for knee braces, shin guards, and neck braces. and then the holy MSR kidney belt...
I wear fly pants, jersey, and gloves cause they fit big dudes real well, bell moto 9 helmet, (came from a troy lee helmet and will never look back) alpinestars tech 7 boots and POD knee brace, I need a second one but I have one for my knee that I utterly destroyed without em.
My favorit brand of riding gear ??? Helmet LS2 470 Neckbrace leath Boots Alpinestars Chest UFO reactor II (but i like your vest, never se befor) Clothing Alpinestars. Greatz :)
Best gear for me is alpinestars, fox and asw Btw guys don't underestimate the boots. A root went through my boot last weekend, and if i wasn't wearing those the root would've probably go through my leg
Thor boots, gloves, pants, and jersey, Fox chest protector and knee protectors VZ goggles and Arai helmet, I also depending on the type of riding will wear padded underwear and a ball protector like the ones a baseball player would wear, I have hit that area one too many times from bad landings
For clothing, I like FXR. As a brand for most things I like Wulfsport. But Im not stuck on one brand. My boots are Oneal. I like carbon helmets because they are light and strong. Again, I am not stuck on one brand. I am budget conscious rather than label conscious.
Personally I wear for warmer except for chest protector especially racing or in the desert also I also wear my Levi under my racing pants believe me it sure saves your rear
When injuries happen we know that once the body is upside down then severe injuries are going to happen including death. Falling of the back is usually bruising, twisted ankle or a fracture. There is a way to stop people from going over the bars. As soon as they invent it this sport will be some much better
I'm new to this channel so I haven't seen as much videos, but could you make a video a wheelie video and a jumping video for smaller bikes like Honda 100 (that's my bike). I've been wanting to start riding dirtbikes with family on big trails, but they require jumping and going over stuff that requires wheelies and I don't know how to do that.. if you already have these videos, don't worry about it, I'm sure they will appear lol, but if not thank you in advance, love your channel guys!
Lol

What’s the first chest protection vest
Honestly the more gear you have the more badass you look.
Man I love riding. Haven’t been on a bike in years, just getting back into it now but the initial cost of gear is crazy!!
How about the bike? I will stick with the YZ250 2-stroke.
Well, if the "initial cost" of the gear is a lot, that means you sell your 1 or 2 year old gear when it is still in good enough shape to be sold, (which used to be pretty rare. I don't know now.). So keep it until the skin shows. :)
Where can i buy that white vest?
It looks very cool
I prefer wearing elbow protection as well.
Alpinestars Boots
Bell Helmet
Fly Racing Everything else
Well explained subjects, injected with humor and saved by editing.
I've used cheap hockey chin/knee guards while riding, just a tip for peoples riding in short shoes.
Is this good for off road riding as well. Btw i haven’t watched the whole video so don’t get mad if it’s already in yhere
I would still strongly recommend to wear all of the gear you can. You can get very very hurt even going slow.
"One of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you"
Very Helpful video, Thanks
I only have a helmet right now and have received multiple injuries that could have been avoided by wearing safety gear. Today I got 2 deep gashes in my knee because I fell from my bike and something hit my knee. I also have gotten multiple wounds on my ankle and elbow.
Dude, just suscribed yesturday and already lovong this channel..., great job, and soooo fun to watch! GIVE MORE LOVE TO THE MX FACTORY!
I was in a crash a few days ago and after I was in hospital.

Do you have a chance of winning the yz125 if you´re not from the us?
If you cover shipping 👍🏼
Still cheaper than buying your own there!

Im thinking about getting knee braces because last year i tore my ACL not even on a dirt bike i tore it trying to walk across a log fishing and i fell but siting on the couch for 3 months and the other 3 months walking around with a brace and crutches taught me to do whatever i can to be able to have fun but be safe at the same time
SIDI boots, and Fox for everything else.
Seven. All the way. And Bell Moto 10 helmet.
Seven brand MX gear. The best.
My favorite riding Gear?

Thor boots, gloves, pants, and jersey, Fox chest protector and knee protectors VZ goggles and Arai helmet, I also depending on the type of riding will wear padded underwear and a ball protector like the ones a baseball player would wear, I have hit that area one too many times from bad landings
Alpinestars is my fav brand
Is it ok if I use steel toe boots because I don’t have the money for dirt bike boots and I’m just starting out
For clothing, I like FXR. As a brand for most things I like Wulfsport. But Im not stuck on one brand. My boots are Oneal. I like carbon helmets because they are light and strong. Again, I am not stuck on one brand. I am budget conscious rather than label conscious.
Don't have a favorite brand, I just buy whatever fits me best. From the helmets tho, Airoh and Shoei carbon fiber helmets ofc.
Im saving up for a 6d helmet, gearne boots and a leat neck brace
All my gear is the standard fox stuff
The 6d helmets are super nice! We like those
@@TheMxFactory yeah some guy at the track told me about their design and protection, im totally sold

Stay safe!
Not really something you need but wrist braces I’ve broken my wrist a few times now I wear the mobius wrist braces
Wrist braces are nice, but generally are used like you do, when you’ve had an injury and need to use them.
