I'm an old guy (52) and ride with my new to the sport 15 year old. Mostly ride two track and some single track. I've learned more from your channel than most of the other I watch. Really enjoy your content. We didn't have this knowledge when I learned to ride, I'm trying to break my old habits and setup my backyard with some training obstacles practicing the techniques you've shown us. I'll never do the stuff you do, but some of the techniques you use for training helps for all around trail riding.

I haven't watched anything the IRC tire guy doesn't do well. All his videos have great information and tips. Since I am too am a 65 y/o chiropractor, I understand the need of balancing 40 pounds of extra gear versus passing out in a hare scramble. The mobius braces are excellent tools for me providing great ROM vs protection vs weight. Thanks for the recommendation of other gear and I look forward to future videos.

Camando is the best. It allows the twig and berries to act as a counterweight when going over obstacles.😂

Thank you. Always interested in seeing people’s setup. I’ve seen you with the Fanny pack style USWE drink system and I really like the way it’s off of your back. Thinking of trying this out. Keep the sweat from building, and show off the Team USA colors in Spain in October!

Luckily I broke mine late in the season and by the time my wife convinced me to get an x ray it was winter. Sucks missing out on some studded riding but I did heal up in 10 weeks.

What about chest protector? I find the under jersey
compression style to be critical. The number of times it’s saved my shoulder and elbows is countless.

You ever try Forma boots? I've had 3 different models and they all fit the same which I appreciate. The soles have the most traction I have seen which is essential here on Kauai

It’s interesting that I started out wearing all the protection I could find (60 yo chiropractor). Sometimes I would get so hot I would crash more often due to fatigue. I still wear a lot but have put away the padded shorts and have been wearing a neck brace less frequently. I wear the mobius wrist braces all the time. Wrists are easy to break and take forever to heal.

That was agreat breakdown, I enjoyed it! Have been a fan of Mobius knee braces myself, I think the hard plastic impact protection they provide should not be understated either - knees are what often hits them ground first in a tip over.
I've been running Gaerne SG12 boots, but am kind of curious to try Sidi. Gaerne has been awesome except for the fact that the hinge/buckle plastic sticks out on the inside of the boot and gets caught on the pegs in the least opportune moments. I've talked to a few other riders that have had that happen and result in a crash instead of a quick dab.
Regarding body protection - to each their own, but as far as risk of death goes - protecting your chest/back is almost as important as protecting your head. Broken limbs usually won't kill you, but damage to your lungs, heart, or spine can. Might not be as critical at lower speeds, but I ride woods a lot, and the amount of pointy sticks is substantial. I've smacked plenty with my chest protector, and there was a rider at an enduro that got killed by one recently.

Great vid on the gear. How about mental prep before a ride with friends or competition? Aside from mentally preparing with the self reminder to go over the fundamentals which you shared I like reminding myself to have a great time. What goes through your head before a ride?
Love the videos, keep them coming! 👊🏽✊🏽🤘🏽

I hadn't considered wrist braces, but thinking about a lot of times, I've hit the ground, they sound like a good idea. I run crossfire 2 srs's, and really like them, also you can pick up leatt z frame hybrid knee braces cheaper than most anything else comparable, and I've used one for my bad knee while off the bike in just day to day life, and its really pretty good/comfortable.

  • @helavatar

I used Asterisk Cell knee braces for a long time but they were a bit bulky. Then I had my knees checked and turned out that my knees were very different and off the shelf braces didn't fit well enough. Now I have CTi Custom braces and these do not limit my movement on the bike. Maybe in MX you can get away without braces but in hard enduro you fall over and the bike falls on you or you get the leg stuck between a rock or a stump and the bike - not a nice feeling without braces.

Pants are my biggest consumable at the moment too Rich! I struggle to find pants that have a bit of give and room in the knee area for my knee braces. I really like the FLy Lite pants, but I find the webbing between the inner thigh only lasts 6-8 weeks - with us constantly moving back/forth on the bike and seat, the thin mesh material just wears out.

Ok, I was hoping you might discuss the seat/hips and torso/elbow areas. From my own experiences of unscheduled dismounts I'm a fan of undershorts with hip/thigh padding (Klim) and a light chest and back 'body' (Jitisie) . I should say this is for slow speed (trials) use . It looks like 'the pros' don't wear any upper body stuff and just regular lycra (spandex) underwear, any thoughts ?

Thanks for the helmet recommendation! I've been looking for a lighter weight motocross helmet to wear on my e-bike which is just as fast in the woods as I don't think a mountain biking helmet is sufficient.

I wear the mobius wrist guard coz I folded my right hand in half across the centre and broke my wrist aswell and can't move my hand backwards much anymore even to get up off the ground I have to make a fist and use my knuckles to get up , made me scared to fall off the bike , my wife got me the mobius and it supports it that much I can actually use my hand better and first time I came off with it it saved my hand I swear by it and won't ride without it

Pair of pants a month. Dude you must get to ride a lot. My first pair lasted for 4 years before the butt was worn through and the second pair has lasted 2 years. Burnt them a bit on my 4stroke exhaust but thats just extra ventilation.

Love your content, and thanks for sharing your safety gear!
I'm curious to hear what's your opinion about how a beginner/intermediate/advanced riders should approach towards protection. Clearly, the less gear on you makes it easier to move on the bike, but probably going to hurt you when you crash. Where do you cross the line? When's more is better, or is it the less is better?

even a slow speed crash in Arizona without elbow pads will leave you with a painful reminder for many months. Everything here is trying to bite you, poke you, scrape you, or break you.

"The form fitting gear looks great." Yeah, maybe on you skinny guys. Not so much on us fat boys. I used to be a hard core knee brace guy then I quit and went back to pads. You may have me rethinking that decision. I may also consider wrist braces. I've never worn a neck brace and Ryan Hughes has me convinced not to. I'm past due for a new helmet. Suomy wasn't on my radar as something to look at, but now it is. I miss the bulletproof riding pants from the 80s and 90s that were made out of cordura pack cloth. It doesn't look as flashy, but I've always liked a long sleeve cotton t-shirt instead of a synthetic fabric jersey.

as a bigger dude too , im back in the knee brace camp as more horse = more force , and a bone is much easier to heal than a knee recon ,
also , look at the Fly Racing gear , they have big sizes and still have a generous but not bulky fit and so far the header pipe is the only thing thats put a hole in mine

@IRCTireUSAMoto have you tried the fly patrol series or the f16 ,
The *higher end* fly gear is much the same as all the other mx brands in being super thin , but the f16 and patrol both seem to be the most robust i can find anywhere here in Australia,

I’m just starting to ride in the dirt, but I’m planning on using the pants/jeans with UHMW fibers that are stronger than leather, I’ve been hit by a car on the streets and broke two limbs with zero road rash. They are not any hotter than moto pants in the Phoenix summer and they don’t have any stupid logos on them and they won’t rip. Also it’s impossible to find moto pants without leather knees and I’m not into the environmental damage that comes form leather production.

Personally I wear mtn bike clothing. IMP there still way ahead of moto gear. Sidi boots is the only thing I wear that is moto. Even my helmet is a mtn. bike lid. Fox Proframe line all the way top to bottom with D3O. Everything I wear has to breath and keep you cool.

currently watching this with a scaphoid fracture i thought the same exact thing also pretty much did the exact same thing was in a cast for 3 months didn't heal and then had to have the exact same surgery you explained in the video definitely going to invest in some wrist braces after that
