Bless you Jerry. You brought a lot a joy to people who didn't have a lot otherwise. Thank God that Vice did the 'Territories show with him. I bought the Season because I knew they would have to cover Memphis and Florida. We are so lucky they filmed them while he was still here.

Lance Russel was awesome. Listening to him call matches like they were legitimate sporting events. In my opinion the best there ever was.

Just gained more respect for Dutch, by hearing him pay Lance Russell that compliment. People that put guys like Jim Ross or Gordon Solie at the top, as being the best announcers, have either never listened to Lance, or just didnt pay any attention to him. Lance was great. Hearing his voice takes me back to my childhood in the mid 80's. Everybody here in West TN had their TV's dialed in to channel 5 every Saturday morning. Great memories. RIP Jerry and Lance!

When you look back Jerry played a consistent part of a tons of guys who became legends as they were beginning their career in the industry. Off the top of my head I think Taker, Stone Cold, Rock, and Hogan were all guys who spent time in Memphis in their early years and it was fairly common to see a lot o them go from working in Memphis and making the famously awful pay from the territory declines to joining the WWF or WCW. Whatever some may want to say about what they thought about his writing or how he ran his business a lot of guys were finally given a chance to they work full time in wrestling from him and in the end he really was the only territory Vince didn’t sink, granted he didn’t attack them the way he did so many of the others. So gotta salute the guy because there’s no arguing that he didn’t have a clear impact in his industry over his time in it.

Hey Dutch... you may not see this but THANKS For talking about the Estranged Father Son dynamic of the Jarretts. I needed to hear that
I've been estranged from my son for 4 years, but nothing negative. Just circumstances. But thanks. I'll be sending him a card in the mail tonight.

There was always subtext in Memphis wrestling. Georgia did it occasionally. Piper’s Face turn defending Gordon Solie and the same with Buzz Sawyer saving his brother. Memphis did it consistently though especially during those early 80s years Dutch referenced. That subtext was a major part of a fan’s willing suspension of disbelief. Memphis tapes were the hottest commodity during the tape trading days.

I'm just glad I got to go to Jerry's house in Hendersonville back in the 80's. It was a teenage party and I didn't see anything that indicated a wrestling promoter lived there. Bill Dundee had a smaller house 10 minutes away in Goodlettsville I had been to because a buddy lived down the street from him. Our heroes are getting old and leaving us.

I feel for Dutch , he was obviously hurting there but he really gave some beautiful words. I’m too young to have known of Jerry as a promoter. I’m not talking about TNA because I never seen any of it. If I’m honest most of what I’ve heard of Jerry hasn’t been the greatest but I don’t judge ppl by what others say. All I can say is there’s a lot of ppl i very much respect in wrestling who really talk very highly of Jerry. All I can say is may the lord grant him eternal rest

Very true. My dad never went in for sports, he would talk about the snake Ken Stabler occasionally. But he fairly often enjoyed wrestling with me. I have a great memory of him and my uncle watching tbs on a old black and white tv from 1960 or so, we got down the street at a yard sale for 50 cents , my uncle laying on a foam rubber mattress in front of the tv in living room, one summer day in 85 I always remember,Double A gave an interview I think, then got in the ring and wrestled Mike Jackson. My uncle is like,"Aw man why do they put him in there with this guy!" My uncle would joke with me,like, "I never get why those guys don't just grab the rope when they bounce off there so the other guy can't clothesline em," or I don't remember word for word but yeah...Rest in Peace to Jerry. He and Don Owens are two of my favorite NWA old time promoters multigenerational. And those two kept it afloat the longest vs Vince and the WWF.

Dutch is confused; the Universal Hwt title was Puerto Rico. The Memphis angle was over the Southern Hwt title (the main title, then, as Gulas was still going and had the Mid-America titles and the CWA World title had been retired and the International title was introduced the following year).

And in my opinion the industry has forgotten that it's the white hat's and black hat's and the storyline too grabs the attention of the fans in my opinion that is a why the industry is doing so poorly on the TV ratings I have been a fan for close to 50 years now
