Jerry lawler, talked about Andy, they were actually good friends, he said Andy told him to make it real, to slap him as hard as he could for the letterman show. They even practice the pile driver and the few moves they did in the ring so he wouldn’t get hurt. When Andy dies Jerry was at his funeral in tears. They were that close

The coffee throw was such a polite gesture by Kaufman too because it wasn’t planned and to make sure he didn’t burn Lawler, he does a fake throw so Lawler sees it coming and then throws it off to the side to protect him.

This is the thing about Andy Kaufman, he was never a Comedian, people thought he was but he never called himself that, he was as Jim said, one of the first Performance Artists, his passion was evoking emotional reactions from people, not just laughter and mirth but irritation, anger, and annoyance as well, and to Andy pro wrestling was the best form of Performance Art ever conceived. Honestly, as a performer, I was never a huge fan of Andy Kaufman, there were a lot of people who didn't get a lot of his acts, and I was one of them, but his run with Jerry Lawler was pure magic. Andy had one of the best minds for wrestling I've ever seen, you could probably count the men with such a grasp for ring psychology on one hand, if Andy had been bigger, if he had any athletic ability at all, and if he hadn't succumbed to cancer, he probably could have been one of the greatest pro wrestlers in history.

Go back and watch when Jerry slaps Andy. It’s quick but when Jerry slaps Andy with his right hand he slaps his chest with his left hand for a sound effect(which is common in wrestling, although not as much back then as it is today).

A few things I want to say here is 1. My god, you gotta love the love Jim Cornette has for the glory days of wrestling. You can see it while he's telling this story and not only that, it's his genuine love for this that pulls you in. I was smiling so much watching this and more so, the way Jim tells the story, that my face started to hurt. 2. I'm probably the world's biggest monster truck fan and the fact that I got to be there for the glory days of monster trucks, USHRA, TNT Renegades Series, Camel Mud And Monster Series, I feel so lucky to have been alive and a superfan in those times. I know that's how Jim and that generation feel for wrestling then and that's something I wish I could've been a part of. Those guys all loved it so much and took Kayfabe to be their truth and that passion reached out to the fans as well (case in point, this very story) I wish I could watch wrestling now with my son and be fully immersed in it's believability, but sadly can't. Even my son will sit there going, "Oh man, that spot was awful" I would've loved to have been there for the best days of wrestling as I was the best days for monster trucks. I truly miss Kayfabe. Thank you Vice for doing these shows like you do. I'd even say give Cornette his own Vice show telling these great wrestling stories. I listen to his podcast and would watch a Cornette wrestling stories show too.

Andy did you hear about this one? Andy are you locked in he punch....and Andy are you goofin on Elvis, hey baby, are we losing touch.....and if you believe they put a man on the moon, man on the moon, if you believed there's nothing up his sleeve then nothing is cool.....and Mr Andy Kaufman's gone wrestling...yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Andy Kaufman was one of the top10 underrated wrestling heels of all time in my opinion. He was so good and together with Jimmy Hart joining forces to overthrow The King of Memphis and The King of Wrestling was priceless. I wish he'd have lived longer but only the good die young. I heard that Tony Clifton continued touring after Andy passed.....what a brave soul that Tony Clifton. Bless his heart.

Damn I miss those day's. But while some watch it to know what happened. I and a lot other watch to reminisce about a day gone by.

Grew up loving the wwf/raw and wrestled in school then got into ring announcing as I grew up and became a stand up comedian. I am now the General Manager of an all inclusive LGBTQ+ Wrestling Ent co. Called “What A Drag” that has Drag Queen performances in between the wrestling. Our wrestlers are pros from all over. It’s incredible! We mix so much comedy and craziness in our shows!!! We don’t conform and we honor the professional wrestling sport. Shoot, we just got AEW’s Sonny Kiss out and are actively working with Rikishi!!! ANDY KAUFMAN OPENED THAT DOOR! He’s so underrated!!! When I was a kid I was obsessed with Jim Carey, and the Kaufman film was so captivating. It inspired me immensely. I’m so glad I got into him, I wouldn’t be where I am without those greats. This whole story is so well told and iconic!!! I’ve never been so excited to hit the share button. ❤️⚡️
