  • How can we raise our children to resist the constraints of gender scripts? The history of the tomboy gives us a glimpse into the gender parameters operating in society. Tomboys have always been gender rebels, but does the recent popularity of tomboy fashion erode that rebellious history or take girl power mainstream? Dr. Jamie Skerski teaches communication and gender at the University of Colorado Boulder. Her research on tomboys reveals the gender norms limiting the potential of girls. She is a tomboy, feminist, scholar, and mom. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Liverpool Avicii what’s up with being tomboy? Tomboy does not mean trans you are still girl and you don’t want to be a boy you just enjoy same things as boys

I've always been a tomboy and now that I'm in my 30s I feel like my style should be changing to something more my age. But, I don't know how to do that. Sometimes it feels like I have to dress more feminine and wear more form fitting clothes. But I'm not comfortable with that. I can't find clothes that I feel comfortable in AND that look more my age. All the tomboy stuff is geared toward teenagers and young adults.

The both of you need to grow up. I am a man, and I used wear make up. I have responsibilities now. I need to be taken seriously for my clients. I am happy, and my daughter is beautiful. Grow up!

I'm a women I was a tomboy as a kid & I'm still a tomboy. My parents excepted me for who I am I played with both boy & girl toys, was interested in sports fed my little sister mud pies. I feel that being a girly girl makes you weak. I wear mens clothe because I cant find decent womens clothes for my size.

ClarissaPacker 1183 the thing I don’t understand is why you can find your size womens clothing just because you are, I’m 12 year old boy and just curious. Also why do people think girly girls are weaker than tomboys? They are both girls, my own explanation for that is girly girls are less interested in sports and working outs than tomboys

    • @ClarissaPacker

@@dubiousproductions4815 I'm not sure, I think a boy or a girl should be allowed to do whatever interests them. While my family excepted the fact that I was a tom boy some of the kids I went to school didn't. There's nothing wrong with being a tom boy or girly girl. I just think tom girl is more respectful then saying girly girl. I also associat girly girl with being called chicken & weak & that's why I don't like the name. I remember being bullied because I wouldn't jump off a roof, the bullies called me a girly girl even though I not afraid of worms or snakes.

by making our children 'resist the constraints' , is not letting them be themselves, but being something the parent wants them to be

When I was young, I was boyish and did as I wanted. In High School, I started conforming to femininity, and this continued for years. Finally, now I am proud to have retaken my tomboyishness, and I'm once again living as I want, this feels right. Wild Fae, I've never heard that, but I love that, and I'll need to remember that now

Been a tomboy all my life. But I hate that to feel more free, to be myself I have to embody "masculine" traits. Masculinity is the standard that I have to measure myself against in order to claim tomboy status. Which also means I have to reject "feminine" traits to be a legit tomboy. I still struggle with expressing my feminine side with necklaces or nail polish. I want to wear those things but when I do I feel like I'm betraying the tomboy in me. I want to be able to just like what I like. Gender is a social construct!
