Hey peeps - sorry for the confusion. This is a reupload because I tried editing out the ending "blackness" at the end of the old vid. And it turns out what you have selected in the YT editor is what ISN'T cut And I selected all the black so my old video is now just darkness. ):
Anyways thanks for dealing with this for me. And I appreciate cha! New vid this Friday. :)

The reason you can't see your party in a fight is a hold over from original computer RPGs. The idea is that you're playing the role of the hero so in combat it switches to a first person perspective.

I love the ludonarrative aspects of this game. That cutscene at the end of part two was so slow and drawn out. I felt really connected to the character in that moment and I don’t have any desire to be a parent. The quiet, dialogue light moments gave me room to think about the story and seeing that other person’s kid grow up for time reference was kinda brutal.
(Personally I cried once or twice, hah)

The Dragon Quest games from 8-onward (and the 3DS remake of 7) all show your characters in battle, so that should be a pleasant change for you.
My own petty turn-off in games is whenever they prominently features things like hunger and sanity meters. They ultimately make me feel like I'm just managing the meters and doing stressful, often futile busywork just to keep them from getting too low instead of focusing on the game as a whole. Just not my thing.

Dragon Quest is a pretty phenomenal series. And while V had a visual and audio glow up, it plays essentially the same as it did back in the Super Famicom. So while a few elements are a little clunky, it's pretty damn impressive for a game released in 1992. Glad you liked it! As far as comparing it to Mother 3... it's hard to expect a game from 1992 to have the same level of script complexity as a game from 2006. Whoever told you that it would be like that just did you a disservice! Heh.
I'd really recommend giving the remake of VII a try on the 3DS. It's my absolute favorite and really the only reason I think more people aren't all about it is they haven't played it (or they got scared when they heard it's about 100 hours just for the main game).

Foote-Dive here ( you posted this video for me on Twitter so I could watch) and I loved this video. This game gave me huge feelings but I do agree with you that my view of the game has been ..I guess I could say altered by those who played it before me due to their constant worship.. Bianca does seem like the only GOOD choice when it comes to a partner simply because the other two choices are crap but I wish more JRPGS were like this one. I am starting to fall out of love with JRPGS because they do not HIT the way games like DQV hit.

SAME - I never fully got used to not seeing your party. I can't believe they waited until like DQ7 to add that. I played DQ4 & DQ5 (both great games), but I am so happy to have now gotten to the titles that show your party!

  • @beebs_magoo

I'm the exact same way when it comes to seeing party members in battle, and loved that you referenced Phantasy Star IV afterward. This is my biggest pet pieve in RPGs and would've made Phantasy Star III so much better to me since PSII and PSIV show your party members in battle.

  • @acidwizard6528

Love this game. I only ever played the fan translated SNES version as it was the only option at the time I played it, but the DS version looks amazing. The art style is classic Dragon Quest, and the story is one of the best for the series.

  • @danielostrowski856
    @danielostrowski856 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

The only Dragon Quest I’ve ever played is DQIX but watching this is so nostalgic because every Dragon Quest is the same, in a good way- the graphics, sounds, tone and gameplay are so familiar. If the DS versions weren’t £80 they would probably be my ‘comfort food JRPG’ like how a lot of people view the Tales series.
My pet peeve, for JRPGs, is increasingly becoming equipment management, which is a bit of a problem since most games have this. FFX has a simple one, and FFX2 has pretty much nothing at all which is appreciated, but so many games ask the player to spend their time and money buying and equipping new clothes of like five different types for the entire party, and it’s just not very interesting.

Yes. The absolute facts shown here makes me feel very satisfied.
The first video game ever where you can recruit monsters to fight along with you wasn't Pokémon, it was Dragon Quest 5.

We have the same issues with DQ in terms of how some stuff like item management and what not being outdated which I know is a DQ staple so it won’t change I feel but they could make it not so tedious in the next DQ game. My petty-problem: When the main character auto-attacks for you. Games like Final Fantasy XII and Xenoblade Chronicles are the first ones to come to mind, but there are lots of MMOs like that where you just select a target and the game sort of plays itself a bit. There's that extra barrier between you and direct control over the character. And I just can't get past it.

"There is no way to increase this." (In reference to the monster catching system.)
This is a major problem I had too, but in the mobile port of the DS version they actually did add an accessory that makes it more likely for monsters to be recruited a few years after its release as an update to coincide with the Your Story movie adaptation coming out. But it's locked behind the Casino and costs 20,000 Tokens, and it only increases the rate by one stage for each monster. (E.g., 1/256 becomes 1/64)
Probably too little, too late, though, considering it took them 27 years to have a version of the game with something like this in it, you'd think it'd be kind of a no-brainer but oh well.

Bianca is one of all-time favorite DQ characters, but I had such a fun time with Debora as my partner on my 2nd playthrough; I'm constantly using party chat in the DQ games that have it and it always felt worth it to check out whatever she had to say about any given situation. And she even turned out to have a good heart buried underneath all of those layers of spoiled jerk.

Enjoyed this one way more than DQVIII: Journey of the Cursed King. Blasphemy, I know, but it's my opinion. It's one of my better RPG gaming memories. On the top 10 for sure. Actually I have a bit of some kind of "concern" regarding the Trails series in general. (Mostly the Sky and Zero which are the only ones that my PC supports) as a whole those games have everything that I like in JRPGs. An engaging storyline. Interesting cast of characters + Villains! One of the bests battle systems ever created in an RPG and most important a SUPERB soundtrack!! Serious guys!! It is just amazing how the music in this series goes above and beyond! It is in a league of it's own! ( I find very hard to find a contender for the general quality of the compositions and also the execution in so many different moods!) another one that I could put in the same realm is CrossCode! ( What a stunning ost!!) and we all know how music plays a HUGE part in the aprecciation and also persistence for players to keep on playing until the very end!
But sadly NONE of that can keep my attention when I look to those chibi sprites! Do not get me wrong, I like the rair, the size, even that they are the same with slight modifications. But I have A BIG PROBLEMO with the faces!! EVERY character has those BOMBERMAN eyes, that are a bit charming, but NOT FROM THE BAD GUYS!! It does not add up you know? We see the characters portrats and look to this chibi representation and it does not ad up! I think it is by my own limitations, but it requires a level of abstraction almost impossible for me, to endure the blatant difference! When you compare with those sprites on Chrono Trigger, Suikoden II, Tengai Makyou Zero. All of them are cartoony versions of the oringinal concept art, but they were maded with such a good taste, and variation, that do not seems to take us as a child. Suikoden II, Or Breath Of fire III, the bad guys or even the good guys, looks a lot like their original concepts. And in Trails, it is hard to me to take a villain to serious when they have those lego faces. I know that is a nitpick but, it is sadly true. God only knows if some day i will overcome this misconception and finally plays this amazing series!! But for now I will stick with my guts... ( FINAL FANTASY VII, and WILD ARMS did not age all that well either and it is even worse... low polygon Playstation 1996/1997 era is my nemesis kkkkkk. i can't handle that!!)

Until I played Tengai Makyo 4 for Sega Saturn (1997! A great year for RPGs) But I did not played in 1997, If I remember the first time I played the game, was about 2005, if I remember correctly! But the important thing to mention is that it took me by surprise! Seeing those giant animated monsters and charming bosses, attacking with such fluid and vivid animations (especially the bosses!! All of them with special full animation special attacks!! I love me some deal of great and memorable bosses on my RPGs!!) Them I started to enjoy the first person perspective and nowadays it becomes my favorite battle visual (Of course they have to be as you mentioned, well maded and feel lively) I much preffer this style than a half ass chibi cartunish to much super deformed characterer on the screen wich I can not relate very much nowadays.. Of course there are so much exeptions for the rule (Rule? Wich one?? XD) Like FFVI or even Fire Emblem or Bravely Default (Regardles I must say annoys me a bit... ) I'ts a mix of so much things for me... I don't like too realistic tough, I find too reallystic to be a bit embarassing... (What is my problem XD ) But depends on the game! A perfect example is the aforementioned Tengai Makyou Series! The third game (actually a side story) called Tengai Makyou - Kabuki Den (PC Engine CD 1993) goes with the chibi characters in battle in full swing! And I liked!! (But still prefer to see my enemies/bosses looking at me on the screen!) I make a exeption because the game is too good!! But may I say that First view is more for battles! I do not like to play a first view person whatever game.
About the music! DQV has a soundtrack that grew on me day by day!! And you are such a smart coockie aren't you? You talked about the soundtrack and I notice that one of the themes that were playing while you were graciously talking about the game is by far my favorite music in the entire game (and probably a top 10 rpg music!!) It was the theme from the ghost haunted house, am I right?! The dark castle that our party first venture after Bianca first enjoys the party!! That song is amazing!!! Climatic, poetic, earie and so much things in one song!! I'm sure is one of your favorites too!! (That's why you use as background music!!) Liking this song so much is a bit outside the curve from me! (I'm much more inclined to like the upbeat and agressive ones!! Like Bloody Battle from Einhander for instance!! Such a pounding electro rock marvel!!) Well I think I may digress a bit! Another thing worth mentioning is how the game offers some quality of life improvements! One of them is the icons of items spred out along the entire game! A herb, a piece of armor, an amulete, an special item! Each one represented by the drowing itself!! Most RPGs dont have that! The maps are handmade too, every village has it's own map showing Inns, armory shops etc. with just a pressing of a button! That helps a lot!!! But let me finish right there to congratulate you, for making one more amazing video!! God bless you sugar!!

I wish you could have played DQVI but everybody will say DQV is the better game. I'm probably one of the few who praises DQVI more so than DQV. All this is making me crave Dairy Queen for some reason.

@@yellowtheyellow There were elements of time travel in the game, but the overall game felt different than the previous games, and had many sad moments as well.

DEFINITELY need to see my characters on screen during RPG battles. Don't know if it's a "playing with my action figures" thing or what, but... yeah.

8:16 Yeah, it took me a while to get over that mentality too. Wasn't until SMTIV when I finally did. Still prefer seeing my characters but I can deal with it now.
As for DQ games, I've finished 11's Main Quest, got halfway through 8 a long time ago on PS2 and am waiting for a Switch or PC port with the 3DS content, I finished DQ3 on Switch last year and I messed around a little bit with the first DQ just to know and finally I started DQV right as things went down with the whole pandemic and have been chipping away in spurts. With 5, I'm at what I believe is around halfway through the game (just married Bianca).
It's pretty great though for some reason after hearing so much praise for it, I expected things to feel a bit more...grand? At least in the DS remake. Things can be a bit nonchalant in tone with some of the major event like with the whole first time jump/enslavement thing. The way that section felt like an odd side note in the story without as much impact on the characters as I feel there probably should've been. Also, I'm still waiting for a dungeon to top that first major one (The Haunted Mansion) as nothing has even come close to being as cool or atmospheric so far. Either way, DQ5 is still a very solid classic JRPG, maybe a little overrated from what I've played but still awesome regardless.

Granted, you can play it on a 3DS, which is good, but still...

Things I dislike in a game:
The style of 3d models that appear in DS and 3DS games. You know the ones. The Bravely Default, Final fantasy 3 and 4. I feel like they are bland and infant looking. I wish they did more 2D sprites in that era of handheld games. I loved the pixel art in Dragon Quest 4. The end battle was really well animated. They could barely do anything with 3D models so they are just novelty.

    • @battledwarf8872
      @battledwarf8872 4 ปีที่แล้ว

The Bravely Default character models look great; the models look [to me] inspired by classical children's book illustrations of the past. I enjoy pixel art as well, however, the models on this type of art came from the limitations of older hardware.

I wasn't keen on 3d models in the ace attorney games. I prefer the 2d sprites.
Yet I like the Ff4 ds graphics as much as the spirte graphics

I can’t think of any game that allows you to marry mid-game, let alone allow you to procreate. If you know of any, feel free to enlighten me.

    • @NaroLucian

Fire Emblem Awakening requires one of the main characters to marry for plot progression fairly early into the game.

I mean... Record of Agarest War is across 5 generations of the main character(s) and you have to find a wife for each one, and the spouse you choose effects the stats and weapons that the child will have.

My petty/superficial deal breaker in JRPGs is if there is no magic specialist character and/or a prominent, playable female (usually filling both roles). Aside from FF15 not being turn based, the whole playable cast was male and none seem to be exclusively casters. I also agree that I need to see my party in battle.

I just beat the mobile version of this game for the first time & agree with the lack of refinement about monster hunting. I liked catching monsters & had an awesome Slime Knight among others, but I didn't play around with that aspect too much. The mini games, esp. Treasures & Trapdoors, was my favorite aspect.
