My first dragon quest game was dqmj when I was about 9 I think anyway I loved it and played it a lot I was very good at it so then I went to the store and thought of buying another dragon quest game thinking it will be just like dqmj and it wasn't but I loved the new game even more that game was dragon quest 9 one of my favourite games which I bought in 2010 and kept it ever since my ds broke and forgot about it until I bought dragon quest builders which revived my interest in the series then I purchased dragon quest 11 then I remembered about how good dragon quest 9 was so I though maybe I still have it so I looked around the house and fount it at the bottom of an old box and took it out and I also found my dragon quest monster joker 2 game besides I couldn't play them until I bought a new NDS And i bought one and that was all the way back in September 2019 and I will continue these games

I first saw the game in a promotion on a game manual somewhere, I was instantly intrigued but it wasn't until 3 years later that I actually got to play it.
When I did, I was instantly hooked, the game was the largest game on the DS I believe at the time for me. I spent around months playing the game since I loved doing side-quests and I was also afraid I'd lose out on something. Needless to say I was quite OP when I fought against Corvus.
My character, Kab, was an Armamentalist with a complete mastery of the sword.
His mercenary and friend, Trump (as in trump card against the Wight Knight, not THAT Trump)
Rose, the Priest who could oneshot MKS with Thunder Thrust and made my entire party OP FAST
aanndd Rui, the Sage, who I imagined wasn't that "in tune" with the world.
aaahh thanks for discussing this game, I absolutely adore it and I love seeing videos about Dragon Quest in general.

This game was practically my childhood. My mom got herself a copy, and after realizing it had co-op, she got me my own copy for Christmas and we worked together to finish the game in record time. I say that, but she actually made me fight Corvus on my own, and after 20 failed attempts, she jumped in and helped me put him down. After we had both beaten the game, we did the grottoes together for years after that. This game is a masterpiece.

Dragon quest IX is definitely one of the best games I've ever played. The customization, the amount of content, the stories (I felt so sad with the one about the doll) where all incredible. But there's something that no mather how hard I search for it, no one seems to appreciate it. I'm talking about the battle animations.
In most turn-based rpgs your team and the enemies stay still, and when they attack they leap forward, do the animation and then leap backwards like they where proffesional athletes. On the other hand, in dragon quest IX there is a complete battle coreography with camera movement wich makes the battle look a lot more real and fluid. So far no other RPG, or at least most of them, have this feature, apparently because "It makes grinding too time consuming".
I hope this feature comes back in the next game of the series, because not even dragon quest XI had it, which really surprised me, as there is free movement when attacking (thought it's useless).
Anyway, let me know in the comments if you also love this feature as much as I do.

Maybe I'm old school, but I started with the first back when it was called Dragon Warrior. It was just plain hard. The same could be said about its sequel. The third one was MUCH better. It wasn't until the fourth DQ game that I got even remotely into the series. The first three I lost interest cause they were so hard and their stories were blah. The third was decent, but I didn't really dig it like the fourth. Anyways, I came across this game via emulation and after maybe 20 minutes I ordered a copy from Amazon. Looking forward to throwing down on this one. I liked this one right away by virtue of the fact the outfits change and the combat is a little more than just the usual screens from games 1-6. The story might be a little wonky, but I'm stoked.

While DQIX does have some meaningful dialogue, most of the story is contained in the emotions behind the development of the fights and situations presented. Take the cut scene at the beginning when the main character falls off the observatory. It shows a lot more in depth of what he might have experienced rather than if It was all dialogue. In fact if you actually thought about it the cutscene is a strong statement by the developers in the way they set it up. The main character, barely of age just a day if not only a few hours, old enough to be in the protectorate by himself is suddenly able to be seen by humans, lost his wings and halo, and is separated from everyone he knows. While lack of extensive dialogue may make this game seem 'Bland' to you. So worth it though, best game for the DS I’ve played, 7 year old me was not prepared for all that emotion and uncontrollable sobbing, it’s just so good! Something that I didn't realise until I played through the game again when I was older was that there were quite a few stories about mortality. Like with Stornaway is was about the Wight Knight and his lost kingdom, Coffinwell was the loss of a loved one, Zere Rocks was about dying alone, Bloomingdale was dying young. Seems kinda fitting for quite a few stories for our immortal to experience was how the fragile mortality affected those around them.

@@FrustratedMillennial Well you can't know where they may have heard these rumors.? Other than that there's a video of nintendo people (devs? what do you call them?) actually saying there might be a dq9 remake since every single dq that came before it got one, and there's a lot of lists of "games that need a remake on switch" that do include dq9 so yeah :I

@@FrustratedMillennial the devs did a live video stream for the 10th anniversary of DQ9. A remake was discussed. And when they asked the audience what system they would prefer the overwhelming answer was "Switch"

Just started the game a week ago and didnt expect that it would take sooooo much time to explore everything. Never knew that something like this existed back then. Thanks to my little brother who gave me his old nintendo ds.

I love that the plot continues. After you beat the final boss there are a good number of "sidequests" (I guess since the main story is technically over) that progresses the plot further. Big things like finding out more about Stella and regaining your sacrificed Celestial status.

I never realized how far I got into this game, it was my favorite after getting it on sale at Gamestop and remembering the tv commercials for it. I first stopped for years after getting stuck at hootingham, then came back to beat him then never play it again. I wish I understood what was happening when I was younger so I would have grown a greater love for jrpgs, especially the Dragon Quest series. Thanks for reminding me of this game I forgot about for so long.
