  • So far it seems I'm only playing the "Good" Dragon quest games. Hehe. This is certainly a great entry point! I hope you enjoy my thoughts and review of Dragon Quest VIII. This is my second ever Dragon Quest game coming from DQ 5!
" This is a portable version of the classic RPG, with added content and other 3DS enhancements.
Set off on an unforgettable adventure with Yangus, the bandit with a heart of gold, Jessica, the high-born magical minx, and Angelo, knight and lothario, by your side! Players are able to capture monsters that inhabit the battlefield in this role-playing adventure. These beasts differ from the creatures you'd normally encounter in battles, as they have special names and abilities unique to them. Once a monster has been scouted, it's added to a growing arsenal of creatures that can then be assembled into teams of three for use as support characters in battle."

The beast with 7 heads and 10 horns coming up out of the waters, multi-headed means political, singular is religious (being the anti-christ which is Satan).
7 dominions throughout the earth, 10 kings/world leaders, the waters are the people expecting to be raptured, for it will be as in the days of Noah, those who are taken abide under God's wrath.
False messiah comes 1st in Rev. 12 Satan and the fallen angels will be cast to earth, he is the son of perdition (perdition means to be put to death, he is the only 1 who has already been judged).
The harlot, the woman spoken of is that great city Babylon, babel=confusion (Satan is the author of confusion), God said "to come out of her.
It's not until the son of perdition, after the 2nd woe, on the 7th trumpet is when Jesus returns, the Lord's Day (that 1000yr period, the day John was taken to, even past where were at now), when Jesus returns the dead will rise and we will all (meaning everyone to have ever lived) be in the spirit.
Yeshua Messiah will reign here on in the new Heaven in the earth till the Great White Throne judgement, then Satan will be let loosed a little while because God is fair and everyone will have a chance and they will be tested by him and some will still even then choose to follow/worship Satan.
God is that consuming, you don't burn in Hell forever and ever, your name is blotted out, no longer existing, period, all souls return to whenst they came.
The mark of beast in the forehead are those without the seal of God in their foreheads (meaning the truth), the mark on their hand are those doing the work of the beast, not a tattoo of 666 or a computer chip implanted.
The 1st beast received a deadly wound on 1 of it's heads, a disagreement via the supernatural entity being Satan when he is cast out of Heaven entirely will come to solve the problem (world peace), no nations to wage war against 1 another we/they will all be as 1, a 1 world rule, under Satan (the beast system).
The religious beast who was out of the earth (dust/ made flesh) and cast to the earth, the anti-christ isn't a man, it's Satan (looks like a lamb, spake like a dragon).
He exercises all the powers of the 1st beast (to take advantage, coming to make peace), and when the dragon healed the wound of the 1st beast, all worshipped it (trample like cattle).
Churches will become the harlot and whore after her, and oh how so difficult it will be to speak/preach against peace/ the wound was by the sword and it is truth, for they/ the world will hate you/us for standing on God's Word till the end.
Satan uses men, the churches will do the work for him, they'll think your preaching against Jesus, our Messiah to come.
      Amen.
      Ephesians 6:12
12 For we wrestle not against* flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

My first dragon quest game. I started playing back in 2009 when I was 8. Over ten years later I can still very much enjoy this game. The ps2 soundtrack really makes the world feel alive and I’ve loved every aspect of the game over the years. It’s perfect. 10/10 no complaints from me.

Amazing review :D always happy to see positive talk around this gem of a game. Oh, I almost forgot, I wanted to let you (and anyone that reads this) know how to get more party interactions. At every new area or story point, or even if youre just at an interesting place. If you press start to get advice from the party, they always chime in on their opinions at the time. Yangus, Jessica, and Angelo actually do have full conversations amongst themselves. If you keep checking them, you'll def get that party growth. Princess Medea even has quite a few missable cutscenes with the main hero if you don't take her to the mystic lake every now and again to change her back for a couple minutes. By the end of the game the hero and medea's relationship feels much more fleshed out if you got to see their interactions in those cutscenes.
Ya gotta kinda try more than notmal, but there really is quite a lot of party growth. Sadly 70% of it is completely optional and most people miss out on some truly great moments.

A nice tip to help with late/post game: Timbrel of Tension! You can only make 2 of them and one of the ingredients is one of the best Helms in the game (a hefty price indeed and one can only be found post game)....yet, having two of them is COMPLETELY broken. It can be used to increase the entire party's tension level by one. I used Jessica (whips), Yangus (axes) to attack, and Hero + Angelo to Timbrel. I had a Meteorite Bracers on Hero and Angelo to make sure they always went before Jess/Yangus in case Jess/Yangus failed a tension build. An example fight: Rd1 Jess/Yangus - Build Tension, Hero/Angelo Timbrel, Rd2 Jessica - Twin Dragon Lash, Yangus (I forget the move I used), Hero/Angelo -Timbrel or heal/buff....by the time Jessica and Yangus attack they are at 100 Tension and DESTROY enemies (Jessica has the highest damage output of every character this way and it's not even close).

    • @KainiusTheGreat
      @KainiusTheGreat ปีที่แล้ว +1

It was Helm Splitter! I had Yangus use Helm Splitter and made sure he went before Jessica with speed boosters (whatever the weaker Meteorite Bracer was called, maybe the Argon Ring). Helm Slitter at 100 tension is absurd.

That makes me more willing to try VIII because of all the quality of life improvements that were already brought to the table.

Edit (18/7/2021): Finally, I can confirm the fact about the Ni no Kuni series being great JRPGs and considered as one of my favorites. That is after a few play sessions for the two games on Steam.
Considering this game along with IX is developed by Level-5, are you interested in doing a review on the Ni no Kuni games at some point? From what I've heard, they are great JRPGs. Of course, the first one has the honor of Studio Ghibli being involved.

I bought this back on the PS2 almost solely just to play the FFXII demo disk that it came with. Unfortunately, I never finished DQ8 because I felt like the grind was way too much for me to find fun or engaging. I've been wanting to revisit this game on the 3DS for a while now, but I either can't find a good physical copy or the copies that I do find are too much for what I'm willing to pay to replay this game. Since the original release in 2004 I always make sure I get to replay it to completion once every 2 years. It's my most replayed RPG of all time and it never gets boring for me tho I only stick to playing the 3DS version since the PS2 version can be a bit of a slog for completion so for the original. I just go to the main ending.
Also I love the localisation of this game where it set a new english script with european writing rather than american which is a breath of fresh air and most of the voice actors who've done english dubbing for the DQ series. they've only done their DQ games or a few cartoon voice roles, I know some of the actors from british comedy/mature drama movies so it felt great identifying english actors who'm i've known in other roles.
To me: No other RPG still has topped it? some that came close were skyrim, Paper mario TTYD, shining force 2 is a personal big fave of mine, skies of arcadia is really cool to, even chrono trigger is up there... hahahah but it will never top DQ8
In 2020 bunch of my buds were having a really hard time, they got tired of playing more serious games. So I recommended them to play Dragon Quest 11 S edition or Dragon quest 8.
Most of them went for DQ11 and they're in love with that game so much and so greatful I recommended it to em. Sadly only two of my friends got DQ8. My mates aren't into 3DS games but those who've play it really love DQ8 so much. They now see why I love DQ8 so much during a time they really really needed something charming to get their minds of bad things going on and all that.
I remember my friends would see me play the original PS2 game so much, more than GTA san andreas at the time. They were more into edgy games. Now they regret ignoring this game and the series.

I’ve only ever played DQIX but since I played it around launch about ten years ago, DQ is very nostalgic to me- and because things like the enemies and visual style are the same in each, they’re all very comfortingly familiar to me
IX does have some unfortunate things (loads of content locked behind an unfeasibly large postgame, and because you make a party out of generics they don’t have personalities) but it really is a great game and I might revisit it someday

It's worth noting that the content changes between the two releases are due to changes in Japan's rating system. Dragon Quest is always targeting the A/Everyone rating, so they had to tone things down in the rerelease to meet the revised standards. (Personally I think the warriors look better with shorts, but the slight plot changes are a bummer since they lose the impact they had. )

Grinding becomes a cinch when you discover the best places to spawn king metal slimes! So its not like you will spend so much grinding for the endgame stuff! Because by that point there is simply nonuse fighting normal monsters for level up. Only fight metal slimes exclusively. Which on 3ds is pretty easy to exploit the spawning of them with the camera trick.

    Really fun video!!!
The only DQ game I've played was IX (and DQ Monsters 2)and that was shortly after release so you can imagine that I didn't retain much of it. But having heard so many positive opinions about the series in the last few years and now watching your video really got me hooked for this game! Also, DQ IX didn't have 'real' party members and I would love to experience characterization in DQ for once.
    Thanks! :)

Metal Slimes. They figure everyone would know or quickly find out that one needs to just grind on those. It's what I did in the PS2 version so I could do the Trials to get the chance to get instant Alchemy. I chose the gear first like an idiot and the next dragon wiped the floor with me xD.

Even if you grind with signs it's still a grind fest. Because they always run away. I spent hours grinding for king metal slimes and I do not like it.

Hey, we have the same favorite song! That and the overworld music were the only ones that I really liked, but I'm not the biggest fan of orchestral music in games, even though I grew up listening to equal parts rock and classical. 🤷‍♀️ I didn't like this entry in the series as much as the ones that came before it, but I cut my teeth on the first one; the grind WAS the story. 4-7 had neat gimmicks to tell their kinda lackluster stories, but 8's not having that just laid it bare for me. And I know that's not a popular opinion; I just like different things about this series from what most people do, so I'm not as big a fan of the newer entries. I can't wait to play Memories of Celceta, myself; I've only played the SNES version of the original, and it's pretty rough. Definitely looking forward to your review!

Hello, this is probably one of my favorite DQ games along with II. I actually imported this back in 2004. I remember getting help from Kouli on GameFAQs back then and even later when I imported the 3DS version. There was no voice acting in the original PS2 Japanese game but when it was added to the US release, it really added something to it. I would later play the US PS2 version also and I loved the voice acting. They did a great job with it.
I agree DQ often doesn't have a lot of character development but I think that is because US audiences are used to Final Fantasy which offers a lot more perhaps even too much. That said, for someone like me, that's kind of why I like DQ. Give me a bit of info and let then let me roam and skip around wherever I want to go.
To your point about DQVIII being too much about "grinding," you are right but all DQ games are that way. There are actually three key areas though where you can level quite easily in the game. It helps especially in the 3DS version that you can see the monsters roaming so you can avoid a lot of unwanted encounters. You couldn't do this in the PS2 version although one skill allowed some cutting of time.
Sorry for the essay. Great review.

I know Dragon Quest is mainly for grinding at times and I don't have an issue with that. However, I do think they went an little bit overboard with this one when it comes to grinding mainly that getting those kind of moves when leveling up is pretty high. One time when I was facing Dhoulmagus, I died so many times to that guy cause he duplicated 3× himself and if u attack the fake one, he will encounter attack. So either I have to use an boomerang ( which doesn't do alot of damage and it's got an 2nd form that's pretty useless at that point & he can heal at times ) or have other characters learn multi-attacks like Yangus's Punch or Jessica's Sizz or Angelo's Bow. But learning those moves is pretty high. Especially when there's other skill weapons that u may want to give the characters. So I have to grind for over an hour to finally get pass through to him. And I have played both PS2 & 3DS. Despite they said they balanced the level curve from the PS2 version on the 3DS version, it's still the same as grindfest as the PS2. So when I start the game, I have to make sure I get every character to learn an Multi-attack moves to finish the fight quicker before leveling up other skill weapons.

I know the 3DS version has a ton of extra things and quality of life improvements over the original, but I still prefer the PS2 version. They censored the 3DS version and the PS2 is the only version with the orchestrated music, which is probably in my top OST's of all time.

What's with people wanting to see Jessica in skimpier outfits? How can that seriously be a gripe people have, or am I missing something else that was censored?? The only legitimate complain is the lack of orchestrated soundtrack which is a complete downgrade from the original.

While 8 is great, Dragon Quests 3 and 7 were my childhood, back when they were called Dragon Warrior. I had the original PS1 version of 7, which I believe is many times better than the 3ds version if only for the script, and the Gameboy Color version of 3. 7:29 While you complained about only being able to save in temples in DQ8 and comparing that to Suikoden saving in castles, early Dragon Quest games you could only save in castles. In fact, in the original Dragon Quest, there was only one save point in the entire game and it was the king in the castle. The temple save points were a thing changed for DQ4.
