I'd been thinking about this video for a long time now. I'm pretty sure a mass shooting sparked my interest in the subject but there have been too many in the time since for me to remember exactly which one.
But the biggest impetus to make this video came from the fact that I could not find a comprehensive overview of this issue. Sure, there are a handful of articles that tackle this subject but they mostly focus on one or two aspects of male aggression - usually testosterone or some bit of evolutionary theory. Nothing that summarized the whole subject.
After all there are plenty of 10 minute videos about quantum mechanics or relativity. Why not one about male aggression?
To be fair, it's a huge subject. Male aggression is probably the most studied human behavior in psychology. There is a lot of information out there about it. But it's spread across a dozen wikipedia pages and separated into an innumerable amount of psychology articles.
For this, I wanted to gather up as much information as I could and try to fit it into a 10 minute video. A mostly impossible task.
I had to leave a few things out. The neurological differences between men and women was one. Brain scans tend to show some slight differences between men and women but it's hard to tell if those differences in neural architecture are due to innate physiological differences or a result of divergent upbringing.
The Male Warrior Hypothesis and the evolutionary origins of mass killings come from a field of psychology called Evolutionary Psychology - which I find endlessly interesting. It investigates how natural selection might have influenced our behavior. But it's a controversial field. Usually when you're studying evolution, you look for evidence in the fossil record but behavior doesn't fossilize. So there's the argument that some theories in Evolutionary Psychology are too speculative and lack true scientific evidence. Others argue that human psychology is too malleable to be influenced by evolutionary forces that might have happened hundreds of thousands, even millions of years ago. And sometimes it can seem as though Evolutionary Psychology is excusing certain types of gross behaviors by making them just as natural to the human makeup as eye color and handedness.
Anyway, whenever I tried to investigate this subject, I found myself searching for an article that didn't really exist. Something that gave a broad overview of the current state of knowledge on this topic. After a while, I realized I'd have to be the one to create it. So I did.

Honestly I liked the video - a lot of the sources, as you say, try to blame our genetics for our behavior, which to me is an excuse. "Boys will be boys."
Boys will be the men they're taught to grow up into.
      Thanks for the video :-)

I'd suggest changing the title, though. for one, most men don't become killers, even if a majority of killers are male. Those are two very different things, and that's probably, in part at least, why you caught a lot of flack from people. The points you made seem pretty valid, but I'd suggest making it clearer from the get go what you stance on the premise is. Most people won't bother watching till the end to dislike the video, insult you and close the tab.

One thing I think factors a lot into male agression is things like socialization, being aggressive and strong is associated with masculinity in society and being seen as masculine is socially rewarding. 'Toxic Masculinity' as a social science term refers to a collection of harmful socialized behaviors performed by some men (this term does not imply all male behaviors are toxic but refers to ONLY behaviors which are harmful to men themselves or to others - Think macho jerk stereotype behaviors like being aggressive to other men).
There are many men who are not inclined to aggression and have normal testosterone levels. Evolutionary biology theories are only so helpful and I think that it is a stretch to say that male aggression is entirely biological, I think there is likely a lot social sciences like sociology or psychology can contribute to finding an answer.
      scholar.google.ca/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C5&q=socialization+male+violence&btnG=
As for concentrated events of mass violence there are a lot of different angles. Often mass shootings are linked to some form of ideological radicalization (this includes terrorism but also other forms of radicalization like white nationalism etc.) - while both genders can be radicalized these groups often subscribe to strict gender standards where men are more often encouraged to be violent than women within the ideology.

Wow. Talk about Clickbait! Why then do women get lesser sentences for the same crimes than men? Why are the majority of murders of men, men?
Why are women who commit violent and even sexual domestic abuse of their kids, and hurt, kill spouses, never mentioned in those shaming ads out there? Double standards.

Because we don’t know how to fix it and men are afraid of the lengths that women might be willing to go to in order to escape male violence. They don’t want us considering separate societies or something similar and in reality most of us already move like that in one way or another and i think deep down inside men know that if they were women they’d probably consider a completely separate society as well. It’s just the most logical thing to do. I personally think women should live amongst mostly other women and if a man wants to be in a woman’s life he needs to prove to that group of women that he can control his natural urges and that he is safe. Back in the day men had to leave their tribe to marry and go live with the wife’s family. This way the wife got to stay within the safety of her own tribe which mostly consisted of women and younger male family members. Patriarchal cultures flipped this tradition on the head and forced women to leave the safety of their tribes to go live among the man’s tribe and that should’ve NEVER happened.

That whole 'men have to be more feminine' is a pure social lie just to make men more submissive. They only want to use men to benefit the others and not for themselves, that is just not how it works, if you want the lust you also have to take the burdens.
Modern society want to enslave men and make them more cowards and live like their worker ants. A lot of those mrn has a job they don't like, kid's how don't look up to him and disrespect him and a wife how disrespect him and where even a cup of coffee is too much to ask let alone a blow job.
Men don't cry because no one cares about a sad man, nibody cares about male depression, a man is build to save himself, they are build to suffer, that's why it is important for a man to be strong and to learn how to fight. No one wil do it for him.

@@_blank-_ So many things wrong with this. And men say they're the "logical sex". First of all, the opposite of violence is not "building", it's care. Who's wiping asses in hospitals and retirement homes? Who's changing diapers and raising drooling brats? Who's teaching and counseling and running shelters? Men like to dominate the "heroic" careers (and they do because of their strength advantage), but when it comes to body fluids, emotional labor, and $12/hour, men are mysteriously absent. To suggest that men do the majority of "good" in the world is beyond asinine. I already told you why the "defender" argument also doesn't work. Men are simply defending women and children from men.
As for destruction, you're right about men being destroyers, too. Look at the beautiful landscapes they've destroyed, polluted to death, and all the species extinct because of it. Even before women had basic rights (I'm talking 1890s) they were the igniters and a substantial portion of the activists of the environmental and wildlife conservation movements. Women heal the earth.
      And then....THAT.
      That again. Uuuuuggh.
That men did all the "art, math, literature, science" and etc. does not paint men in a good light. It paints them as the relentless oppressors that they are. Men only did "all these things" because women were trapped by them in the home. Not even allowed education. Not allowed to pursue hobbies. Now, only 100 years since the feminist movements began, and much sooner still lacked rights, slowly....SLOWLY....ever so slowly, women are creeping into male-dominated fields. Women have already conquered the school system. But the chains of the past still linger.
Men even sometimes tell women to "be grateful" that men did everything. Hellllll no. Never will I ever be grateful for the almost total lack of history. The erasure. All the women's names erased when they married. Women would've been better off if men never existed. And imagine how much further along humanity's progress would be if we had had women's minds contributing throughout the past centuries. Double the progress, probably.
See? Does not go both ways.

Ignore those who are mad about you stating scientific facts. Those who get offended by your video are those that haven't done research, taken psychology in college, or maybe have tendencies, or are like this. Those called "snowflakes" are less likely to be violent, but still can be. Testosterone not only creates the sex drive, but also determines the base anger and violence level. Everyone, male and female, can learn to not be as violent. But, many don't realize children overhearing conversations by adults at very very young ages, even 2 years old, can cause issues on top of genetics. The base levels are genetics and developed in human evolution. And the rest is developed. Both men and women can have higher testosterone and can be violent, but the male genetics cause theirs to be higher. Unfortunately, it is scientific and historical fact. It isn't anything to get angry and defensive over. Those who are aggressive, those who are raised to be even more violent than the genetic base level, can choose to learn to not be that way. Male AND female. It nbn isn't a "snowflake" way of thinking. It is just common sense. And yes, "traditional" way of thinking is good to a point. And helps to balance our societies. But doesn't need to be as violent as many people tend to be. I think he is meaning to point out the scientific and historical facts. And how makes tend to be more violent than female. And how far society takes it when there isn't a need for the extreme violence.

I think like this is more learned though. Men are discouraged from anything feminine while women who adopt masculine traits are seen as "less basic". Note that feminine and masculine traits are conditioned cause most people have a mix of both energies or traits.
"Empathy" for exampe is not a female trait it's an expected behavior from women. Men have it but they hide it and women who don't have it fake it.

I often find it's more down to purpose. A young male's natural motivation is good if it's focused on something constructive, or simply disciplined and controlled. It might be weird to suggest martial arts as a good answer to this sort of thing, but controlled sparring and a focus on self-improvement rather than random acts of frustrated violence is probably a good thing to support. I like the message of this video, but even if society does eventually encourage men to be more sensitive and less violent, there will still be the part of us that is inherently violent and seeks out conflict. It sucks that we still have this DNA that helped us prosper in cavemen times, when we are in the digital age and no longer need it. @deathbypowerpoint There are two genders but sometimes there's both at the same time and sometimes neither due to genetic anomalies and gender expression lies on a spectrum and cultures can and do consider non binary gender expressions to be different genders, this is why culturally the Indians have 3 genders, the Native Americans had 5, the Thai identify the Kathoey as a distinct gender, there's the femminielli of southern italy, and the fact that the Yoruba people of Nigeria did not have a gender system until colonization. Biological gender does not necessarily invalidate the existence of Gender Expression and of cultural gender systems.
Women are "privileged" in western society in so far as they have rights that women in other parts of the world do not. The "benefits" that women receive due to "being women" come from the same pervasive sexism that paints them as being "more naive and incompetent than men and only being good for child rearing" and thus is a result of men treating women as less than them. Add to this that most men will abuse their positions of power to pressure women to "pay them back" for their "generosity" and you see why what might be seen as an unfair advantage by a male colleague is just a result of the inherent sexism that exists in the system.
So on the surface level you're right but your "reality" falls apart the moment you compare it to actual reality.

It's like it makes sense if you squint at hard enough but only when you squint. When you actually look at the reality it makes no sense. Not being allowed to drive doesn't mean you get to be driven around it means you stay home or walk.
See that's the main difference between the majority of feminists and the majority of MRAs
. MRAs look at the problems that men have and try to blame it all on women and created some sort of conspiracy about women being the ones explicitly in charge despite women being denied what could be considered basic human rights for the majority of history
. A feminist will look at the situations that BOTH men and women are in and while you might not completely agree with the patriarchy part their solutions are good for everybody.
MRAs complain about lack of safety regulations in male-dominated jobs but do nothing to actually fix it while feminists talk about how we can get companies to be more responsible about the wellbeing of their workers.
MRAs complain about the amount of homelessness while feminists talk about raising the minimum wage so people can afford housing.
MRAs complain about the lack of support for male victims of violence while the majority of feminists talk about how men shouldn't be seen as less of a man if they open up about said violence.
Does reality offend you my good sir? Are you going to go back to your echo chamber to be told about how STRONG you are and how it's reasonable to feel cheated when someone else gets the same rights you already had?

Feminists only look at problems men have as well as women when it is convenient for their PR and the solutions they propose only help them in the long run. The MRA tries to fix regulation problems, but are stopped by feminists and the companies at almost every turn. All the while feminists talk about how we can be "less biased" in the workplace and are merely focused on getting women into traditionally male dominated positions with high power and none of the ones with low power. MRAs claim that the rate of homelessness is due to the rejection of most males in the education system which is a whole argument on its own. Feminists on the other support a solution which in this case benefits nobody at all because raising minimum wage will just create a job shortage. MRAs try to fix the issue of lack of male support for victims of violence, but are laughed at and shunned by every turn by feminists and literally everybody else, because apparently they deserve it for the male stereotypes they created and perpetuated despite the fact that the only ones shunning them are literally the people who speak out against those stereotypes. Once again I see someone else exhibits Shapiro's one major flaw.

When talking about the Male Warrior hypothesis you forgot to mention why the selection pressure you describe only applies to men and not everyone, and I always found that reason super interesting: the tribe that loses most of its men can recover, while losing the women means certain doom. Until those same men turn on their own women in their own community and then that theory blows up. This is what’s currently happening in the black community where black women are being killed by black men every 4 hours. And statistically speaking most women are assaulted by men they know, wether it be domestic partners, family members or close associates which means that most women are assaulted by member of their own tribe. Men don’t typically just walk into foreign territory and start harassing women because they know they’re gonna have to deal with the men in that territory if they do.

    • @naraferalina2308
      @naraferalina2308 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

The male warrior hypothesis actually predates humans too. Chimpanzees have the highest rates of violence against females of any primate. Which is quite a feat. Chimpanzees will kill females who display too much aggressive behavior too. Simply, because they are weaker. Male chimps will also fight over territory for access to resources. Warfare is in their blood.
Now it isn't surprising that estrogens do a lot for human brain development and hence why it takes men a bit longer to develop the same skills. Estrogens are needed for: emotional regulation and stability (weird right?), learning and memory (women remember events more easily), self-control (female rage being a hilarious example), planning and executive functioning (plays an important role in switching tasks and doing things you don't want to do for example) to name some. All this because acting on daddy's anger genes was a death sentence if you couldn't get away with it. Women and females of the ancient past developed various conflict avoidance strategies to lower male aggression. From smiling and crying (tears contain a chemical that lowers male aggression. Possibly developed to avoid killing annoying children as infanticide is just... common), to straight up learning to predict men's behavior. Hence why women's intuition is not just a concept.
It should be said, that male aggression is so common, it'll be harder to find a species where the males aren't more aggressive than their female counter parts. From pigeons to dolphins attacking after being rejected, to zebra's, tigers and elephant seals killing infants that may or may not be theirs. And of course, the reindeer bullying. Where older males will bully a younger male or female reindeer over food. Killing other males, makes it so that the most violent ones become the only option. Females more often than not don't care when in heat. Male aggression is so common, that 25% of the females in A species of hummingbird, develops a male phenotype to bluff themselves out of conflict. Because males are inherently violent, and you look scary, other males will avoid you. Giving up their camouflage and making themselves a bigger target when nesting, for birds of prey as a result. Avoiding male aggression, was more important than avoiding predation. And the only reason we ever see 20-25% of females displaying male behavior/phenotypes, is because if all females were to do this, the "I am scary" loses its meaning. My favorite will always be the female frogs that play dead to avoid being crushed to death by males piling up on them. Some of them will opt to scream and pretend they are male, just so that the male lets go.
They studied expression of pain in laboratory animals (rabbits, guinea pigs, mice, rats and hamsters) after exposing them to male body odor. They found that the smell induced a fear response which made them hide pain more. This phenomenon hiding pain out of fear was already known. As prey animals will hide illness when a predator is near to avoid being targeted. Turns out, testosterone is scary. It is also the same reason, that "domesticated" wolves will behave more hostile towards strange men than strange women.

Whether someone becomes a bully or not is a complicated matter and can't be boiled down to what they choose. Children's choices are highly influenced by what they learn is right or wrong or whatever during early childhood, by parents and the society they interact. Aggression can also be affected by mental health, as a troubled child can also resort to aggression more often and normalize that for themselves. Society, parents, genes and health all come into play regarding who GETS the "bully" trait, and not only choice. People don't chose who they become personality-wise. It's like saying shy people chose to be shy because they admire shy people. I'm pretty sure that's not the case why shy people become shy.

From the beginning with the bit on testostorone I thought you were implying that I was going to possibly be a killer. Because as a woman I have had extra T through my puberty and formative years. Which I would get pissed easier, but I never thought about killing anyone. But I think it was important to take it from the aspect then of psychology. There's a reason more men have ASPD than women, how they grow up often determines their behaviours, how they are socialized.

I've been asking this question for many years - the majority of criminals are men, and there has to be a reason. I'm glad you tackled it, and I understand the need for exaggerated expression. I did however feel a bit uncomfortable with how you demonized men for something they were born with.
Personally, the men I love in my life hardly ever express violent or aggressive behaviour, and for that I'm thankful. I do believe that testosterone can be used to benefit society. It can be channeled away from senseless violence and used to build society up.
Also guys, you're whole identity isn't "testosterone-carrier". You are an intricate, complicated human completely capable of building society up.

  • @jamesteavery0

Why did you put oversharing as a universal human trait? One of the most damaging aspects of masculinity is the drive to not share, and to hold emotions without properly discussing them with others. In fact many of these attacks would have been much more preventable if the killers 'overshared'. Just the word 'oversharing' is damaging and suggests that we shouldn't be social, shouldn't talk about feelings, shouldn't express ourselves unnecessarily.

    • @alisonlaett9625
      @alisonlaett9625 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I mean there are certain ppl you should share with and certain ones you shouldn't. for example when one of my classmates told us some intimate information about her family to the whole class I felt physically uncomfortable because of how inappropriate that was to share with everyone. But by all means plz go talk to your friends about it, don't hold it all up inside.

    • @pickles3128

I think of the word "oversharing," I think of someone telling his grandma over dinner which kind of porn he likes to watch. Or telling someone on the first date you love the smell of your own farts. You know, stuff that's not socially acceptable. Although I do agree with you about men being very guarded about their own feelings... It's frustrating to deal with.

@JONES I think that solipsism and cutting oneself off from others tend to go hand in hand. The only thing that stops isolation is interaction with others, and exposure to other people. Sure it's not a 100% cure for the problem, murderers would still exist even if they didn't isolate themselves from society, but sharing of that perspective gives both the opportunity for it to be contradicted for the solipsist, and the possibility for others to realise that those people need help.

Whenever we say karate or martial arts movies as kids the warriors in those movies always had a strong sense of discipline, self control and spirituality. That’s what’s missing from masculinity today. The men are “warriors” with no self control or spirituality and rather than using their aggression in a controlled and appropriate manner they become drunk with it and burn everything in sight.

Let's add: My 7-year-old son who has been raised by a former infantry soldier who grew up in an economically depressed area where violent physical fights were a daily happening (I broke my first jaw when I was 8) and whose primary digital entertainment source is 80s cartoons on DVDs is bullied by girls (not boys) at his school, on his bus, and in the neighborhood.
He has come home with welts and bruises all over his back, his legs, and choke marks on his neck. His bookbag has been ripped apart, his lunch bag has been thrown out a bus window, the one time he took a toy to school (a stuffed dog that he had since he was 2) for show-n-tell he came home with it missing all it stuffing, one of its eyes and having curse words written on it in marker.
We don't live in a depressed area as I did as a kid, we live in a community and area that has a strong economy so the causes of the traumas and violence of my youth aren't here. When I approached the school, the suggested that maybe my son was lying, bullying (especially by girls with such good grades) could never happen there. I hired a private investigator showed the school video proof of the bullying in the recess yard ... they threatened to call the cops for the crime of the unsolicited videos. Then they claimed that maybe my son had done something to them first ... the video showed my son playing utterly alone (none of the boys would go near him I later learned for fear of the girls going after them) and then being kicked from behind by a girl.
My son hates women now, not for anything I taught him. Not for anything I continue to try an instill in him, but for the unwarranted hatred and violence that has been visited on him by "the less aggressive" gender. Oh, and when my son finally had enough and slapped one of the girls (after she punched him in the stomach) he was the one who was suspended.
