Why are Males often More Physically Aggressive?

  • Tournament vs pair-bonding
    The term I keep coming across to describe humans (and other species) is "serial pair bonders" or "serial monogamist". We tend to fall madly in love for a few years and then fall out of love. But considering all the diversity in human sexuality, and the fact that there are billions of us, it's hardly beneficial to put a label on it. You'll get polygamists, you'll get monogamists for life, you'll get males who are attracted to males, you'll get males who feel like they are female and who are attracted to females... and you know everything else.
    Looking at animal behaviour and the reasons for animal behaviour is just a way to start thinking about behaviour on a evolutionary scale. These are not necessarily models to explain human behaviour. Every species and every community will have a different world of when it's appropriate to be aggressive and when it's appropriate to be sexual.
    From secondary sources I've read that male and female humans are equally aggressive (how this is measured I do not know) but that males are more "physically aggressive". But that a big part of the difference stems from male vs male aggression. For example, from what I can see from internet article statistics (not really statistics), females and males are similar in counts of "physical domestic aggression".

      He falsely states that most human cultures are monogamous, that hasn't been true until very recently with the spread of Christianity and Western thought. Before then, most cultures had people seeking multiple partners, via concubines, or multiple wives, etc.
      Generally there was some commitment, though. Hence why bastards are so frowned upon in many cultures, as are "deadbeat dads."
      So we're sort of in the middle, like he did say. We compete to get as many mates as possible, but generally we seek some form of commitment from them.

    I've seen some nature documentaries were the females will choose a male who is 'weaker' as a father for her offspring and the producers explain this by pointing out that he wasn't weaker: he was albino or blind or missing an arm and somehow still alive and surviving inspite of this. even a creature with a less-intricate brain can project that if another animal is still alive inspite of its wierd colors or dsabilities, it is stronger than the ones that have all the arms and legs. she knows for sure that this male could survive without pigment or eyes. she can't tell that about the males who have all their eyes and pigment.

      farley pants That's not how it fully works. Still, for example, there's a reason why female animals want to mate with the most colorful male. Colorful males are easier to detect. If a very bright male has made it till adulthood, it means he's a tough one (or intelligent one) and by extend, he posseses good genes.

      secretname911 Yup. A guy who gets laid a lot is dominant, probably has good genes, and is overall a better mate. A girl who gets laid a lot has low standards, probably doesn't know what's going on, and overall is a poor choice. It's a natural way of looking at things.

    • @kesselsol
      @kesselsol 9 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      Cha0x110 Probably. Thats just nature. Nature doesn't realise the concept of condoms/birth control... so, I'm willing to bet, animals will tend to look down on females who get laid while they are pregnant. Because the male who had sex with her while she is pregnant will not have his child to bare. Also, if you have alot of children, you will barely have enough time to take care of all of them. Some males kill the female's children just so she can take care of his own children.
      Thats just nature. And we still have nature's way of thinking in us.

      @Dragon Cocplayer i mean, that is extremely off-topic but ok
      also, i'm assuming your first language isn't English, because if it was you would know that "they/them" is a gramatically very common pronoun for usage in singular when the gender is not specified.
      in other languages (German for instance) it is not grammatically correct to use the 3rd person plural for a single person, even if their gender isn't specified, and as a result we German speakers have to resort to he/she, and the grammar wouldn't really allow to change the rules. But like i said, in English it's a different story.

    One question. This video suggests that in general, males would be more promiscuous than females because the females put more resources into producing offspring. How then does it explain species with promiscuous females that mate with multiple males instead of being choosy? I'm not just talking about species where gender roles are reversed such that the males put in more parental investment but there are some species where both males and females can be as promiscuous as each other. I've also heard of experiments showing that females can also increase their chances of reproduction by mating with multiple males. Also both humans and bonobos can also have promiscuous females.

    • @ThisPlaceChannel
      @ThisPlaceChannel  10 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      Yeah, this video just says males don't necessarily have to invest more than sperm into a baby, so lots of mating is better for males because of that. But female's and males both benefit from promiscuity in other ways.
      One way has to do genetic variation, the reason for sex in the first place. There's greater chance of getting a good combination there, depending on what the environment throws at them. 20 kids from one male may get redundant in adaptation to the environment. 20 kids from 20 different males is much better for potentially beneficial traits.
      And there's probably lots of other reasons. Regarding what you were talking about, guppy females just mating with multiple males can make them lay more eggs. Not a prolonged genetic benefit, something about mating with multiple males rather than a single male makes them make more kids. Here's that paper: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC27698/
      Even though there was the same amount of mating going on in both monogamous and polygamous treatments, the promiscuous ones has a higher fecundity. Weird.

    • @chickadeestevenson5440
      @chickadeestevenson5440 9 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      +Jonathan Hartman Well with domestic cats for example. The rate of infanticide is high in cats. However if a female breeds with as many males as possible then the kittens have more males invested in keeping other males out, and therefore them safe.
      Also it offers, to species that have litters or clutches a larger diversity in genes for their offspring.
      Like cuttlefish. The big strong males dominate the mating. However smart small males pretend to look like a female and sneak breed the females. So the female wins out by having both strong and smart offspring, doubling the chance for her genes to be passed on.

    • @blanc18
      @blanc18 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Jonathan Hartman 5:08 --> he's saying that generalizations are, in essence, not useful for predicting SPECIFIC behaviour. Additionally he mentioned behavior is influenced by both you're environment and you're genes... So basically, you're behaviour isn't determined by only who you are, what also matters is how you are socialized (raised).

    • @RainAngel111
      @RainAngel111 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      +Jonathan Hartman Most of the time, when females are promiscuous, the males stick around to help raise the kids. This is the case for Tamarins, where the males do most of the raising. In that case, the more males she has, the more kids she can support.
      In other situations, where the male doesn't stick around, the female usually has some internal mechanism like a sperm storing pouch that lets her keep and choose sperm from lots of different males. In this way, she can make her selection later.
      In some sense, the promiscuous female is rolling the die and playing the numbers game. She may end up with offspring that are weak, but chances are good there will be at least one mate with good genes that she otherwise wouldn't have been able to mate with, had she been monogamous.

    • @blanc18
      @blanc18 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jonathan Hartman "This video suggests [...] how then does it explain species with promiscuous females that mate with multiple males instead of being choosy? "

    So, this is possibly impossible to answer (i.e. why does anything happen in biology), but I'm going to ask anyway: Why is the sex ratio of births still generally one-to-one? If the gene 'wants' to be reproduced more frequently then, it seems to me that a very advantageous trait would be to be able to produce a majority of females. If this happened then, over time, I guess the tournament traits would get de-emphasised because there'd be less competition, and a pair-bonding (or tri-bonding / poly-amorous bonding) would get emphasised. More females would mean a higher chance of the rarer males mating with multiple partners and ensuring more genetic spread, wouldn't it?

    • @ishrendon6435
      @ishrendon6435 ปีที่แล้ว

      No not exaclty there are spevies where females very overwhelmingly make up the species and if you evolved into a tournament species it still carries on for many many generations like in many animals . I think youre assuming to much knowledge in aninal affairs or how evolution works . It doesnt alwaus make sense or whats good for the species. This whole idea animals behave for whats good of the species has actually been debunked no evidence for it. Please read robert sapolsky

    Another way (that i don't think happens in nature) would be to simply birth more females than males. if there'd be 1 in 10 chance of a male being born then male gametes would still be plentiful. This would mean that most males get to breed and the only deciding factor in a specific genes survival would be how well it helps SURVIVE.
    Alot of tournament species mentioned seem to be in an evolutionary dead end of sorts. It's an arms race among males. They need to be big and strong in order to breed their kids will need to be big and strong and their kids...
    If a lion was born that was 10% smaller but needed 50% less food to sustain itself he would never breed and pass this magical gene.
    And humans are neither big or strong, we are the dominant species that just happen to go the opposite way.

    And this is why we like skinny or muscular people so much. Skinny and muscular usually means healthy. This is also why men who have a lot of sex are considered studs while females that have a lot of sex aren't held in the same degree. Males tend to be expendable in the eyes of nature while females aren't. A female with no standards isn't going to be seen as a favorable partner. But this probably isn't universal. Not all species reproduce the same way.

Bonobos are a really close relative to us and they seem very openly promiscuous but at the same time we tend to disapprove of homosexuality even while we fairly commonly display it. In humans yes, because we are apes (apes like asses and wide hips evolved because it is a fertility signal, other animals prefer other signals of fitness), but for males the cost of copulation is so low (some minutes of your day) that they will just "do it", you just don't have a reason to be picky. But they will still avoid a partner if it is sickened with a contagious disease.

    Not much depth to this video, too busy trying to pander to the equality crowd. Males are more aggressive because males are disposable. A society can afford to lose significant numbers of males without long term consequences to the population of the society at large. Aggression comes with risk, but it also brings rewards. Our species can afford to risk males, but females are too valuable to risk in the same way because every female is the next generation while 1 man can do the reproductive job of a hundred males. This is also why females are risk averse while males seek risk out. It also explains why the majority of females reproduce while less then half of men do.
    And behavior is more genetic then environment. Science is your friend, not feelings and social justice.

      This was a good way to summary this video. It doesn't say more than what you said.
      I think that Humans are long past the point of having to worry about reproduction that much, there's just too many of us, and our decisions don't need to be made with reproduction and biology as a priority... We now worry about how to make everybody we can mentally happy, and sometimes to achieve that happiness we must go against our primal instincts.
