2018 Honda CB1000R Review and Comparison

  • I have ridden nearly all the bikes in this class as it is my favorite class of bike. My current bike is a Yamaha XSR 900 Anniversary edition. While it is down on horsepower it packs a lot of punch down low and is quite light. How will the Honda CB1000R compare? I also talk about how this bike fares compared to the MT10 and the Z1000 as well as the less priced bikes such as the Kawasaki z1000 and z1000rs
    I filmed the talking segments mostly with the Sony a7iii on tripod.
    The slow mo was handheld with the same camera
    little action shots were handled by the Sony FDR3000X
    Audio was recorded with a Rode Video Mic Pro plugged into the camera for the most part.
    Bike riding footage was filmed on a Sena Prism with audio from a bluetooth Sena 20s headset.
    Edited on Premiere Pro CC

    I have owned it for about a month. Long time Honda lover and collector. The first bike I owned was an 82 CB750F, black and orange. Since then I have owned and collected a bunch of VFRs, fireblades, and a super chicken, before settling on a blackbird as my weapon of choice. Over the years I begged for a rightful successor to the CB SS, but the 919 and last gen cb1000r never tempted me, either in looks or character.
    This bike is a gift from the Honda gods. Comparing this bike to other liter sport nakeds misses the point entirely. I am sure they are excellent machines, but Honda didn’t build this to compete with other bikes. This was Honda returning to its roots and doing so spectacularly well. It delivers power in classic Honda fashion, which means that up until 5k rpm it purrs like a very civilized kitten. I added the quick shifter (which, of course, works perfectly like everything else) and on lazy moments I shift easy and early and just cruise along keeping it in standard mode. That may not make sense to an MT10 or Duc or KTM owner, but it’s a big fucking deal to me and always has been. I don’t want to fight a dragon every god damn minute. I love the civilized power delivery of a Honda, always have.
    But I got a bit of a naughty side. Well, bi-polar more like it. And when I feel the need, about half way up the red line, that’s when I really love Honda engineering. Cause the same machine that is so civilized down low becomes such a performance powerhouse up the speedo. My beautiful new CB1000R does it better than any other Honda that has come before it. EVERY ONE. The performance is breathtaking, but what’s even more amazing is how confidence inspiring it is at all times and in every situation.
    This is the way Honda should have been building its standard big displacement inline four all along. Honda prioritized the CBRs and VFRs and the sporty standard CB was an afterthought, and it showed. NOT this one. This one has both soul and character, and it is so good that, respectfully, I couldn’t give one care about the competition, just like the original CB SS didn’t either.

      How would you rate this bike in terms of skill level? It’s clear this is no “liter bike” super sport or hypernaked. But if you keep the CB in user mode with power down and traction control up, could a contentious rider with one or two seasons under his belt get on this and feel safe and confident?

    Quick note, at 6:27 you mention the z1000 has a good 20% more HP. It actually has less HP. Low Torque can make vehicles "feel" faster than they are, the CB1000 actually has a better top end than the z1000. Perhaps try Sport Mode next time, you were in standard the whole time.

    • @sixthisoverdrive
      @sixthisoverdrive  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kevin Kettler yeah....I noticed that while editing the video, yet still forgot to put up the correction. Since I was on a quick test I didn’t try the other modes, as I like std as it has the most natural feel of the bike. I usually don’t fiddle with modes and tc options on my rides. Thanks for watching.

    I have had my CB1000R now for 1 week and have been able to use it on all types of roads in both rain and standard modes. Travelling at 70 mph (approx. 4,600 revs)on the motorway was comfortable and the ride was compliant suggesting light/ medium touring would be good to do, standard mode offered greater responsiveness than rain with delivery in both smooth and rewarding accompanied by a nice exhaust note(standard can). Obviously I am still running the engine in so do not know yet what the added value will be once revs go above 5,500 when the exhaust note and engine power changes but this is to come. You are right in stating that this bike is a gem. Interesting note is that mpg is continuing to increase and my bike is now registering 41mpg and is going up.

    Just a further note to my previous comment, I am 6'2, long legs and 110 kgs. I fit this bike perfectly and the seat is comfortable for a few hundred k's. Rider triangle is spot on, but the mirrors have to go! I will be putting on grip mirrors as the standard ones don't allow me to see anything except my arms! I also own a Suzuki 1000 Vstrom ('14 model), so the Honda is my "go play" machine. Enjoyed the review and have subbed.

    I just got your video recommend to me and your review is excellent! I love your review points! you are fair in specifying the good point and bad points on the motorcycle. I appreciate that you mentioned even though the bike is a great bike on the post ride analysis the bike isn't for you because you are 5'8". That really helps me understand the fit and feel of the bike ergonomics as I am exactly your height! This is fantastic help for me! There are so many other reviewers who state the bike fits well, or other bikes are too cramped but fail to disclose their dimensions so it's no help to watch the review in terms of ergonomics. Thanks again, and great job! :-)

    I've got a Z900 (with a radiator guard) my brother works for Honda and just got one of these as his company ride, absolutely gorgeous bike the quality is typical Honda (I've got a Crosstourer at home as well) we took the Z and the CB up one of our mountains (hills) down here in OZ a couple of days ago, the CB strait out of the box needs some suspension setup its great at 20 /30 km corners but mid range 70/80 km advised corners it is a bit of a bronco, we both agree the Z even though its 20 horses down will absolutely annihilate it on an typical Australian road and I imagine the XSR900 will as well, got passed by an XSR on one of my favorite roads it was fun watching him do wheelies between hairpins impressive. Nice video good work

    Agree in your opinion regarding the height, also in terms of the quality of the cb1000r, I also agree that the engine is smooth. But in relation to the engine, I think you were not clear, it has a beastly 145 hp, it is much faster than the xsr 900 from 0-100 and definitely also in the quarter mile. Finally in my opinion its design is insanely spectacular and could never be compared to an ordinary design like the Z1000.

    Bike sizing matters and you need to feel comfortable on it, but the complaint about low-end torque is easily remedied going up a tooth or two on the rear sprocket or dropping one on the front sprocket. This applies to any bike. You can also add a speedo healer to correct the readout on your speedometer as well as odometer. What drive mode were you in, btw? Did you test them all to see if any of them felt better to you?

    • @sixthisoverdrive
      @sixthisoverdrive  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alpha Force I didn’t test the more intrusive modes, and I also didn’t fiddle with them. (Each mode has more adjustments). Most of the time I left it on sport with minimal tc. Yes you can do anything to any bike (I have a smaller front tooth on my dr 650), but the engine nature is not as linear as some f the other bikes, and does start out soft. Thanks for you comments. It’s good to hear about fixes and troubleshooting. There s only so much we can jam into an unrehearsed review. Cheers.

    Agreed. I rode one of these to see if I'd swap my XSR for it but no thanks. (That goes for the street/speed too.) I would swap the MT10 though, boy I loved that bike. But saying that, I still think that the CP3 engine is the best I've ever owned so maybe I wouldn't when I take into consideration practicality and fuel consumption. I have the SW Motech side bags which seem to be quite good so far.
    How do you find the seat comfort on the XSR? I'm struggling but I think that may be more of a personal muscular problem rather than the bikes. I did just buy the 'custom' seat but I swear that thing is even harder if possible!!

Not much you can do about the forks though. As far as a good starter bike, it depends on your ability. If you have never ridden a bike before, I would stick to 500 cc or less. If you know your way around a bike a bit, the z650 or fz 07 are great choices. Those will be great to learn and will give you room to grow.

      You are correct sir. I did get the hp wrong as I had accidentally looked up the older version somehow. However I did get to try out the modes on the bike and did go into sport, and still found it soft compared to the xsr. Not that it was bad, but there was definitely the Honda 8 k rush and a soft feeling down low.

    @sixthisoverdrive I just sold my MT09, I currently have a z900rs. The Honda just became available here where I am from and I really love the way it looks, and on paper it looks better than the z900rs... I loved my MT09's performance... low end torque is amazing... I just didnt like the modern edgy look of the MT.... Hence I bought the z900rs. But what I do miss is the performance advantage of the MT in the 80-130kph range... I feel the z900 lacks that little oomph. Would you say the Honda is just as powerful (or more powerful) than your xsr900 in say accelerating/overtaking cars from 80kph to 130kph, assume that you happen to be on 4th 5th or 6th gear. Most of my riding is on the highway and done in that range. THanks!

      Raphael Arcenas The bike opens up at 8k rpm. It is definitely faster after that. Keep it at 8k and above and there won’t be any lack of power. In the city you will notice that it doesn’t have that low end playfulness of the triple. I definitely would be passing in 3rd on the cb and 2nd if I was at 80 kph to 100 kph.

    • @raphaelarcenas2888

      @@sixthisoverdrive Thanks for the feedback... 8,000rpm, and 2nd or 3rd gear huh? a bit disappointed to hear that... it means I'd have to be riding with a bit of aggression and purpose... the z900rs power comes in at around 6500rpm (i wouldve have wanted it to come sooner)... I remember that my MT09 had the pull even at 4000/5000 -which was what I loved. I could be cruising at 5th gear going 100kph then if I wanted to pass some slow car, i could just open throttle and not have to downshift and the power was there right away. I'll miss that.

It’s cool that you like the bike you own more than this one. I respect that. The center of gravity on this bike is very low. It’s an extremely short wheel base and it’s 140 + HP bike. With traction (torque) control off, this bike will lift the front wheel in three gears, maybe four if you’ve got the balls. Also, I’m 5”10 with a short in seem and can barely flat foot this bike. However, I own an Africa Twin so having a tall bike isn’t an issue.
