Thank you for covering this gem in the rough that only resurfaced in recent years!! In the first place its a great idea to cover all those FMV games like Phantasmagoria, It came from the Desert, and so on. Harvester in particular has such an interesting story line with all the ridiculous characters and riddles, I can tell you did this awesome game justice. Its also funny how Gil Austin after the wrecking launch of the game seemed to be all over the place when it comes to new jobs. You should read into Phantasmagoria - maybe the two games in the franchise are worth covering, then there is also Gabriel Knight 2 which was pretty much Sierras last fmv game and a classic amongst the german fanbase for the sole reason that it plays in germany. As always thank you for this awesome video, keep them coming!!
It's kinda ironically fitting in a way that Kurt Kistler, the actor who portrayed Steve (but not his voice actor), was convicted of possessing child pornography in 2010
i jumped at this the second i saw it pop up in my sub box i could watch people talk about/play harvester all day this game is such an absurd interesting product of it's time and i can barely name anything like it, so cool to see you covering it
Thanks for the fun video, you really knocked the ending out of the park imo. You've got a great grasp of how to look at themes in media (better than me imo) and the whole video was a very welcome bit of entertainment. Happy to be on that patron list as usual.
otra pequeña parte de las historia de los video juegos analizada y presentada con humor. amo tus videos! saludos desde mexico. i did not write this on english because idk how to type some of the words i wanted to use. lol
I've seen a couple of videos on Harvester but this is my favorite analysis I've seen. I'm really glad the channel is getting more views and subs, well deserved!!!
Sometimes people say they are on a binge of a specific topic and just as it is supposed to end, there is a new video about it by a great creator This time it happened to me ! Harvester has its flaws ( as a game mostly ), but it seems more relevant than ever
1996 on consoles: Super Mario 64, Pokémon Red/Blue, Resident Evil, Tomb Raider 1996 on PC: Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Commmand & Conquer Red Alert, Diablo....... also Harvester and Ripper xd
A game I was actually familiar with before your video, and it really is the perfect game to get a deeper analysis from your channel. I read a comment a few years ago that sums up the game rather well; "Everything that is problematic and icky about America which is present in the background is here pushed into the foreground." On the surface, Harvester doesn't really seem that innovative. Satirical parody of 1950s America where the bad parts of it are emphasized isn't nearly as uncommon or boundary-pushing as some people like to think, but Harvester does something deeper with it. For example, the end of each day plays the same animation of Steve undressing and going to bed, "desensitizing" the viewer. Your analysis regarding the Chain of Pleasure, Consumption, Violence, and Production is thought provoking.
I love the yearly Halloween DOS coverage!! To me, the most memorable part about harvester was its ending. Always thought it was funny that in the “good” ending the cult leader officially weds the two together with them in actual wedding attire.
I'm continuously amazed at how much valuable video game history there is to find outside my usual areas of interests. I have of course heard about the general discourse on video game violence that occured before my time, but a whole a game made to commentate on it during those times? And it's another one of the few solid games prominently using FMV
The entire section with Mr. Pottsdam and Karen made me audibly say "what the FUCK". I knew Harvester was a game satirizing America's strange relationship with sex and violence, but I wasn't expecting the story to take such a dark turn. The fact that the citizens of Harvester completely brush it off like nothing happened is genuinely horrifying. Up until the scene with Mr. Pottsdam spying on Stephanie and Steve having sex, you could argue that the game was a dark satirical horror comedy. I didn't know the game discussed topics like that.
I can't help but notice that throughout the game, most of the people who get hurt are innocent (besides Mr Johnson), but ultimately forgotten about. Who cares about the fire men? They're just these overdramatic queens. Who cares about Karin? She's back home, after all. Who cares about Pastorelli? He's some shifty immigrant. Who cares about Edna? She *chose* to do it. By the end, when you've seen so much disgusting stuff from the people of Harvest... You kinda *want* to kill them, hm
Oddly given modern politics it's still relevant as hell. And also includes convicted sex offenders. Because we as a species really suck. We can be so much better than we are.
A few days ago LobosJr posted a playthrough of Harvester, but I didn't care because it's not my type of game. Thanks to your amazing video, now i know that was a mistake and I should taken a look. Unique story and pretty disturbing game, i loved it !

Makes the scene with Steve saving Karen even more fucked up in retrospect.
What's so crazy is that if you look up his mugshot, he's wearing the SAME FLANNEL
Well, you always were a diddler Steve

16:26 I like that you can tell how little he cares about his job based on the fact he has a lit cigarette in his mouth and a second one in his hand

Thank you very much for the support :)
Man the town of Harvest feels like what America will actually look like in the next couple of years
This game's atmosphere always creeped me out. Not because of the blood / gore, more because of how "fake" everything feels. It's like living in limbo.

Gotta have Ripper in there
This game is like an indie 70s midnight feature
I've watched a lot of harvester videos and this is the best unpacking of theme and intent IMO
