Something I love about the switch is its easy customizability. Due to all the flat uninterrupted surfaces on its dock and back, you can slap any sort of sticker or skin on that bad boy. My wife and I own one each and while mine has some silly set that makes it resemble the Shieka slate from Breathe of the Wild, my wife’s switch is a colorful collection of Etsy stickers. Kind of a funny way to like a design, by covering it up, but I appreciate it despite them definitely not having considered that.
Maybe it's because I never had a GameCube as a child (Nintendo didn't officially sell them in my country back in the day) and got access to it as an adult a couple years ago, but I simply can't understand all the hate that the cute little box is getting. Well, aside from Nintendo's stupid decision to use miniDVDs. It is the best looking console of it's generation as far as I'm concerned, and that silly handle doesn't really detract from anything. Oh, and the controller? Hands down, the best gaming controller there is, Nintendo figured it out back in the early 2000s. It's just a perfect fit for a human hand and a very comfortable button layout, I can't believe the design has been dropped ever since.
I always thought the PS2's design was timeless. Simple yet iconic, especially with the official stand. That specific shade of blue gradient, which was also used in all the marketing and cd cases (and maybe even some games?) seems to be carved into my memory to represent that period. The PS4 is also a favorite of mine. Like you said, similar approach. Guess I just like sharp angles and minimalist design. Could also be interesting to go over handheld console designs, where things can get whacky. Thanks for the awesome video BTW!
I should do something handheld related 👍 And I think I'm in the same boat of loving the "less is more" designs for the most part, something about it is so cool to me
great video as always taigen :) being in a PAL region, I always loved how our SNES looks, with the same design the super famicom has. the red yellow blue and green buttons and the very curved design of not only the console but the cartridges is really charming to me. I just wish the cartridges had end labels :P
Yep, that version of the SNES definitely feels more like the "family computer" than the "Entertainment System" if that makes sense. A very industrial looking palette, but then those four colors suggest a world of possibilities; low-key but charming design
Great video! I love shit like this! A few thoughts: - I'm happy to see my feelings echoed about the PS2 fat model, especially. There's something so bloody appealing about the font on the top, and the blue and green lights, the gilded sides, all of it. - I really, really miss the Wii's blue light bar. - I bloody love the OG PS4, as well. I never once picked up on the parallels to the PS2, though. I don't know what I'd say is my favorite for looks though. Saturn comes to mind, but admittedly that is only because it is my favorite console of all time, and it's difficult for me to divorce those two concepts from each other.
Yeah, in a way, because I'm not much of a console guy, I had the impression that I had less nostalgia bias. But come to think of it, I probably have a bias based on how I view the console historically
for me, the gamecube is the best looking console, andit has the best controller, one i still use today. the gamecube is the perfection of cute hardware.
I very much agree that the PS5 is not my favorite visually, but I can definitely see the idea of them kind of reaching for something new aesthetically. The choice to do white and black together is interesting, and the curved shaping is very "trying to be different". Pretty much every one of these consoles is a box of some kind, while this tries to be more of a hard-to-define futuristic cyber-thing. It still doesn't appeal to me on a visceral, visual level, however. Maybe there's something off with me? I hope we're not destined to a fate where 20 years from now we talk about how great it looked, because I hope humans aren't naturally doomed to not recognize the good in new things except in retrospect. Of course, I do think it kind of looks like a ridiculous blob still.
Great video as always Taigen, I'm also a ps2 head, it has such a great look. I'm gonna pretend that me growing up playing it a lot has nothing to do with that opinion :)
good video love your content. as someone that came out when NES did (born in 85) its interesting to me to see indepth analysis of someone looking at these things in a completely historical context. n64 is the funniest, most consistent example of this: when it came out, it was only boomers that didnt know that you only use the middle and right stick, but these days, its zoomers boomers and alphas alike who pick up the control that way. you're right that nintendo was trying to figure out analog.. the controller was built completely around mario 64- basically it was nintendo's idea to use analog stick for 3d games.. before mario 64, most 3d platformers used awful "tank" controls. the dual shock and other later controllers where the analog stick was positioned near the d-pad were initially seen as an inferior arrangement , likely due to sony being unable to directly copy the three ponged set up. if n64 didnt have an analog stick so prominently, and demonstrate just how good it was, its likely dual shock and other analog set ups wouldnt have come along for much longer.
Always funny to see how innovation and experimentation pan out long term. I was recently reminded of Alien Resurrection on PS1, the first game to use the now-standard dual analog control scheme for FPS games. At the time it was met with confusion, and it was definitely weird, but post-Halo it would ironically become _easier_ to come back to
i had gotten my home invaded once and the intruders while robbing my house saw the black wii u i had and could not decide on whether or not it was a video game console or dvd player and if they should even take it
I never owned a OG XBOX but the look of it always fascinated me, yeah it is very "american" but its just so ridiculous that i cant hate it, i think the best colour alt was the transparent green, black and green is pretty ok but i just like it all green Also black and green reminds me too much of ben 10
We had mostly Nintendo consoles growing up but we did own a Genesis, it definitely had a vibe to it that said it was cool, I just remember it was the console to play Sonic lol unfortunately it lost it momentum while Nintendo and Playstation succeeded. I was carried through most of the 2010 gen with 3DS and PS4, both amazing consoles beautifully aesthetic and amazing library of games. Since the reveal of PS5 I had zero recent to leave my PS4, it was uggo and there was nothing in it even now! I did eventually get a Switch Lite and its fine as I no longer play games as much as I use to which is why PS4 still having had support made keeping it. I think its come to and end of console, imo this is a perfect time for something new fresh to be introduced, Steam Deck did so well because it was similar to Wii U Switch PSP handheld style with a large steam library ofc that imo is superior to the Switch. I think Sega making a come back would be super cool rn now in this gen when consoles are steuggling with PC and Mobile competitors
It's weird that the Wii U had great joysticks both for the pad and the pro controller for it and was a complete failure but then the Switch has absolutely dreadful joysticks and is super successful, I mean yeah it's great being able to take a console on the go but what's the point of getting it if one of the most important aspect of its controls are a complete joke in terms of reliability especially because it's a portable system you'd think a company like Nintendo that had strict durability standards for a stationary console twenty years ago would be even better in modern day at designing a durable controller for a portable system but no their controller for their most modern system has the durability of a knock off bootleg controller it's embarrassing but also sad to see. Nintendo is like a car company that were known for making vehicles that could last a century with relatively minimal maintenance to those stupid electric scooters you can find in a huge dumps across China
I always thought the original Xbox One looked like an old Betamax VCR, more sophisticated and cool than all the other gray boxes but also just as boring; I hate the huge touch-sensitive power button, it's just too easy to press by accident. The original PS3 did that one better and thinking about it, I like its overall design quite a bit. It's just very much a product of its time, I mean you can date it just by looking at the logo... The chrome accents were just the coolest thing for me, though.
Good analysis of the consoles. Personally I loved the circle -> triangle -> square design of the Dreamcast. Also have a sub to help fuel the spite against trolls. :D
love the japanese sega saturn with all the colors. i can picture kero from card captor sakura playing it in my minds eye

what a great video
I found this video immensely pleasurable

Scott The Woz ass video concept

You deserve to hit 10 millions subscribers! Your writing style is unmatched! I think all you need is a better camera and more click-baity thumbnails.
I'd have everything I ever wanted if I just had a big rack to take up 50% of every thumbnail
Here’s hoping that the next generation of consoles don’t become digital only, I was really nervous when the PS5 originally had a digital only model.
great video as always taigen :)

It was funny to me how they had to bring it back for Smash games on Wii and even Switch lmao it was that good!
16:19 For a long time i always thought the Wii U console was just the controller 😅.
This video brings so much nostalgia
That is a beautiful background video of a shaggy dog playing a game console
It's an Atari 2600 commercial about video game addiction being contagious lol

It kinda look like an eye of Sauron. So I always thought that it's a console for bad boys, but I'm a good one.
I really like the european snes design
Yeah, totally. I had the European version myself as a kid. It always surprises me that almost everybody fails to mention it.
yet another banger from my boy
however: bring back winter lane unless it gets your ass copyright claimed
I just go with the flow when it comes to music choice; what'll you get next time? Who knows!
Great video as always Taigen, I'm also a ps2 head, it has such a great look.
I'm gonna pretend that me growing up playing it a lot has nothing to do with that opinion :)
I personally been liking the snes jr design a lot, it looks really good with japanese and european cartridges
the XBOX CONTROLLER WAS HUGE
I will never not laugh at that

My heart swells with national pride when I look at an Xbox
