    Great video! Looking forward to switching over to this firmware. Lots of useful features for SOTA and POTA.

      They are a lot of fun for a few bucks. I just ordered another one so i can do some different things. I’m currently playing with the sstv function which seams to work well. Might do a video on that too.

    I bought one of these just to see what the excitement is about. I spent $30USD on it including shipping (Amazon). So far, I haven't loaded any new firmware, but I am having far more fun than I have ever had for $30! The fork of the firmware used here is actually two forks that were derived from the original factory firmware and the best from each combined into this one. This MAY be the one I choose. No hurry, though. I am having fun. If I brick it, no problem. I'll just buy another.

    I like this Ham ! He takes a really basic radio and improves on it. This is Ham Radio at its best ! For many long years, I have seen far too many Hams just buy "off the shelf" and stay in the limits of the radio's programming. This guy wasn't satisfied with what he bought, so he made it better. Nicely done, Sir!!! I really respect your work. Now, if other newer Hams would apply themselves to what they learn about electronics and programming, the Hobby would be really great. High praise from a 40+ year Ham "Elmer", eh?

      I agree, that's why it's called "Amateur Radio" and we are given the ability to do what he is doing with this Quansheng, to experiment, try different things, use what works, and share that data with othe Hams! Awesome comment and thanks for a great video with good detail and straight up commentary regarding the mods.
      I got one for me and my Elmer, and I'm going to mod just like this video. Me and my Elmer will use the CW and DSB for 2M and 70cm.

    Hi, thanks for this good overview. Sorry for a dumb question: Did I understand you correctly that the CEC firmware from Hamskey allows for DSB transmission and that you tested it to work? Thanks again.

    • @QRPMonkey
      @QRPMonkey  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yea that is correct. It is DSB. I did test it across my house using a ic705. Audio worked both ways. Its not perfect audio. But it functions. I will be doing more test at longer distances to see how well it works.

      @@QRPMonkey Very cool, thanks for confirming that! I didn't know that there were other firmwares apart from IJV with DSB TX. Does Egzumer also support it, or maybe kamilsss655 / joaquim? (Sorry I'm waiting for my Quansheng radios to arrive so I can't test them yet.) And would DSBDSB work between two Quanshengs running the same firmware? I'll be really looking forward to your DSB distance tests. My guess is that even if DSB is not as efficient as SSB at concentrating the TX power into a single sideband it will still be better for reading weak signals since the noise floor is so much lower than FM. Thanks again.

    • @QRPMonkey
      @QRPMonkey  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I have not played around with anything else other than IJV. So not sure on that. I actually order a couple more radios so i could play with different things including DSB to DSB, as I wondered myself if that works. I remember either reading about or seeing somewhere that it doesn't work but I do not know for sure. I haven't had much focus on that yet. Since CW was my main goal. As for efficiency, not sure. I would also assume that it would not be as good as SSB but better than FM. My only experience with DSB is the QRPGuys FT8 Transceiver that was DSB and i made tons of contacts with it thousands of miles away. I will share any new info I learn in future videos. Thanks for following along. Have fun when yours arrives. 73 De KF7SEY

      I agree more use of these bands. They are there waiting for us to use them. That was one of my main reasons for seeing if this radio with work. Its not cheap to get a rig that operates 2m ssb and cw, as most are all band radios like the IC-705. Thanks for watching! 73

      Just checked with a little watt meter i have. 4.6w. This is not true ssb. Its DSB but it does work talking to others on SSB. The IJV seams to do better for Duel Sideband operations. Im going to do more testing. VK3YE did a video on ssb and share some distance contacts.

    Im still waiting for the handy that transmits in SSB all mode im sure with current SDR Tech this should be simple and cheap to produce they need to stop fing around and make some real handy radios . all band all mode and im not talking about that brick sized Icom 705 i have its massive like a old Vietnam radio lol Far from truly portable considering your carring batteries food water tent lets get real . So go out and design something truly inspiring China lol the Quansheng is a super cool radio i have it especially if you do the chip swap to it but it doesnt have filtering a needed item if you really plan to use it in transmit as its dirty as they come and is more like a Jammer wideband than a radio lol never the less its a cool bit of cheap tech now lets get somethign real for that price range heck add 50 bucks to the parts count even lol The big boys Icom kennwood etc are over priced crap for what your getting think about it 30 bucks Quansheng hmm china tech could smash the big guys if they get with the program and really build something .
