i got one in Camo. i ordered a Seperate Antenna for it bc mines got lost in the mail somewhere along its journey too me. i figured out the buttons n basic functions. i like that it Has FM Radio and i can save my Fav Radio Station channels too it.
Qrp Monkey, I have the same buzz at end of CEC ssb transmissions… I tried a qso with a fellow ham about 1 mile away this weekend and strangely he was dropping out if I moved the HT inches away from a sweet spot… it wasn’t as solid as your CEC reception with the k6. I hope the CEC guy fixes this bad ssb because I’m 95% happy with the CW keyer he has. Does the IJV firmware handle CW as well? I bet it doesn’t have a keyer. Good Test you did. One weird thing I noticed was both CEC FM and SSB transmission can be heard with USB on the Icom. As if it’s a Hybrid signal.
NIce test. The DSB is "emulating" SB according to documentation, like a quasi supressed CW. Would like to see if there is a range advantage of DSB vs FM. K5/6 FM vs K5/6 DSB, HT to HT. Thats an idea for your next video?😉
I also came to suggest the same thing! Especially range between 2 UV-K5 units in FM vs DSB mode would be super interesting. Regarding the TX modulation in DSB mode with bith CEC and IJV I've also noticed those little blips at the end that you noticed. And also something strange with long consonant sounds, like for example "tessssssting" and the 'S' sound would drop off, and in general it felt like it was blanking out certain sounds. Quite strange, but still fascinating. Thanks a lot for your interesting tests.
I think either firmware are usable. What's more useful is how to use SSB as I didn't know it's allowed on 2M (I thought it was only on 10M for us Technicians). Can you do a video on getting started in SSB with topics on the freq range, step, bandwidth so we can be successful?
You should do a range test with IJV firmware - CW, SSB, FM on 2m and 70cm - I would think the SSB and FM would be the same since I've heard the carrier isn't suppressed due to the hardware limitation in SSB. It would interesting to see the 3 different modes on a spectrum analyzer. With the IJV you can set the power output to anything you want below 5W. You should set it to something like 1/2W so you don't have to go a huge number of miles away. I have heard 1W CW = 100W SSB. See if that is true.
@@QRPMonkey I found a video where SSB and FM was compared on 2m, but wasn't a range test. In both cases the filter was set to W. In both cases the S meter value was the some. However, the signal quality was much better on FM. The goal of SSB is to cram 5W into a very small space to get more range. It sure looks like the 5W is distributed over the whole bandwidth of FM in SSB mode. If that is the case, SSB transmit doesn't gain you anything.
@@s.b.2088 Somebody needs to test it. The DSB (meant to say DSB instead of SSB in other posts) 2m transmission that I heard had more noise than the FM when the bandwidth was set to wide. Would a good quality SSB radio hear DSB better with a narrower bandwidth than FM? Who knows?

SOTA? Definitely! POTA, in my area yes. I'm in a dense ham population here. But otherwise milage may vary. Great test.
With POTA, its nice as you can work the same operator with different modes. If you do CW can get a total of six contacts with 2 bands.
Great test and excellent video 👍 Subbed your channel 👍
Thanks for the sub!
Looks good
great job73

It does cw as well. And i like it better as you can change the filter down to 2k wide vs 25k
Very cool. I just need to get get the cable to so I can get mine to work
I had issues with mine. It was a tight fit and had to trim a little to get it to fit all the way in.
Yeah trim or really give er a push

I third that motion. I've seen only RX firmware comparison vids like yours so far. Let's put the two-way back into two-way radio.
Mine was two-way that was the point of the video.
Do you have a video on jow to load that ICJ
I Don’t, but there are several videos out there on the subject

I’m sure you’re right on the range test being the same. At least for ssb. You can hear the dsb signal on another fm radio

Won’t give an advantage over the other modes. But will allow participation on those modes where others maybe on. Such as VHF contest,SOTA, POTA
Maybe there could still be a range advantage with DSB transmissions due to the lower noise floor in SSB RX mode?

Sure....I have the egumer but I'm going to change it because it's not transmitting😢
Hold the ptt and s1 button on the side down when turning on. There is a special menu. There is a spot for allowing transmission
@@QRPMonkey I don't see that setting in the hidden menu. Any help please?
K6 on cec firmware ? Haha jk will field test that myself and report back .
I had the cec originally on my k6 when i did the CW video. Same as K5, had the same buzz at end of transmission.
it emulates sideband, the hardware isnt actually capable of sideband dual or single.
Yep that is true. Its a voodoo magic on the software side
