As a woman who ended up in STEM i would say there was a combo influence of Janeway, Torres, Scully, Sam Carter (SG1)...you could probably throw Dax in that mix too.

love The Autobiography of Kathryn Janeway, I listened to the audiobook and Kate Mulgrew gets back into the role like she never left, giving real weight to a back story we never saw on screen.

    • @Bastion90
      @Bastion90 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

I personally prefer Mosaic to the autobiography. Jeri Taylor wrote young Kathryn with more personality and character flaws, and then we see her grow into the captain we all know. I think Taylor's writing style was also far better. I did enjoy the autobiography, but it's nowhere near as good as Mosaic.

    • @sarahc3295
      @sarahc3295 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

@Bastion90 - there is a 3 young adult book series: "Star Trek Voyager Starfleet Academy" where it tells the story of Janeway's first, possibly some of the 2nd year at the Academy. Shows some of Janeway's admiration of Amelia Earhart. The individual book titles under the above mentioned banner: "Lifeline," "The Chance Factor," and "Quarantine." I personally recommend them for more of Janeway's backstory.
I did just finish a Lost Era Star Trek book titled: "Deny Thy Father" and while it focuses more on Kyle and Will Riker, Janeway does make a brief appearance as an Ensign working as an aid for Admiral Paris (i presume before the El-Batani) and assists Paris and Kyle Riker to flush out a sabateur in Starfleet

    Catherine Janeway, a captain bold,
Met young Tom Paris, so we're told.
Her name changed twice, before it stuck,
Kate's method acting showed her pluck.
No romance with crew, she did decree,
Though Chakotay held her heart, you see.
Engaged to Mark, her distant beau,
And once to Justin, long ago.
Her father and Justin, both were lost,
    A tragedy of immense cost.
    Sister Phoebe, mentioned in Prodigy,
    Completed Janeway's family tree.
A hero to women in STEM,
    Inspiring them, a precious gem.
    Janeway's story, rich and deep,
In Trekkie hearts, she'll always keep.

Mulgrew was suffering from a cold at the time she auditioned for Janeway, which she thought was one of the reasons why the role went to Bujold. The reason why Bujold left is due to the fact that she was a movie actress and was unprepared for the more hectic pace of shooting TV episodes. Ultimately, she had to drop out. This, of course, gave Mulgrew (who had recovered from her cold) a rare second chance at Janeway and nailed the second audition. And a Star Trek legend is born.... 🖖😎👍

I was one who wanted Janeway and Chakotay to have a romantic relationship in Voyager - but I understand why Kate Mulgrew knew it would have a negative bearing on her authority as Captain if she did. What I did not know was that Mulgrew admitted that Kathryn was in love with Chakotay - wow! Although that might ha ve simply been for the benefit of the youngster at the convention who asked the question.

Though a different series altogether, the name "Kate" was applied to another of Mulgrew's characters she portrayed when they scrubbed the show title "Mrs. Columbo", a short-lived series intended to be a spin-off from Columbo starring Peter Falk, and replaced it with "Kate loves a mystery", as it was deemed that Mulgrew at the time was far too young to actually be portraying Lt. Columbo's wife, given the established long-time relationship between himself and the ever-unseen Mrs. Columbo... :)

You cannot deny that whether surrigate mother/son relationship or potentially adventurous romantic, both McNeil and Mulgrew and their respective characters have chemistry on screen.
I could picture a young Paris boy having a crush on that rising star when they went on a flight simulator...
And in multiple episodes, Janeway clearly takes him as her protégé, not hesitating of taping him on the shoulder, even in earmier episodes, something that we would do much less on Harry Kim, who, despite looking at the same way, as a protégé, she classifies him as the "child" of the family.
If Paris and kim had been her children, Paris would have been slightly the favorite.
And given what is said in Threshold when Tom excuses himself about what happened, she mysteriously says that it might have been him who initiated it... Janeway, the repressed Cougar. Might have been one of her alternate universes versions, no doubt.
Of course JC chemistry is above all...
I never criticized the decision of not gong further towards Chacotay, given his position in the crew. I always saw why Janeway never gave up, it's not heartless, it's a decision that she had the right to take, as captain of a stranded Starship on the other side of the galaxy. Had they settled down on a planet for good, had they been in the Alpha Quadrant where Chacotay could have requested a transfer, things might have been different. Janeway's decision and Chacotay's understanding of it is also what gives charm to that relationship.
No matter her experience in Sci Fy, Mulgrew had the acting experience and method to incarnate ANY character possible and adapt accordingly, that what counts and that is what sold it for me, she is talented, she has class and charisma. She had what it takes.
What about the Sam Carter effect? After all Amanda Tapping also studied some astrophysics to be sure her character wasn't telling bullcrap on screen... So Mulgrew is not the only one to portray competent women and still steal our hearts...

She did violate its principles, including the prime directive, from time to time, but so did other captains like Kirk and Picard both of whom were within communications range of Starfleet and could have been advised if they had encountered a situation where she was not in communications range for most of the time and thus had to make her decisions on her own and decide for herself whether violating The protocol was worth it or not.

Of course I learned something. You could casually mention something you take for granted about this character and I guarantee there's at least a 75% chance no one else has even considered the possibility. That's not a bad thing; always own your passions.
Also, couldn't her mother have been a mathematician who wrote children's books? Look at Da Vinci and all of the different things he accomplished. Are you going to suggest that the mother of the GREAT WOMAN HERSELF wasn't comparable to that guy? For shame! There's a reason, I suggest with nothing at all to back up my claim, that Da Vinci was one of the Captain's top inspirations.
P.S. TH-cam autocorrect tried to tell me that "Captain" shouldn't be capitalized. I ignored it, as any sensible person would.

Janeway does frequent the Da Vinci holodeck program as seen in "Scorpion Pt 1" and "Concerning Flight" so it's pretty clear she's inspired by him.

Ms. Jeri Taylor's Mosaic is actually considered canon (as was the novel Pathways) as Ms. Taylor had a hand in Voyager's production.
Lindsay Wagner & Kate Jackson would've made for an interesting CO for Voyager.
Nicole was also a better first name.
Its said Nana Visitor also lobbied Rick Berman to head Voyager but he nixed the idea.

Linda Hamilton would have been wild as Janeway. Likely even more no nonsense then Kate's Janeway. Interesting what ifs :O

Pretty nice list and I agree with the number one pick, but... yes but... Nichelle Nichols surpassed that role as a pillar for a much larger audience throughout the Trek History so maybe you could do a list about Uhura as well next time... Good Luck with that!

As much as I loved Kate Mulgrew and her splendid delivery of Captain Janeway, I can't help but wondering what Geneviève Bujold would have done with the role. :)

I agree with the decision not to have Chakotay and Janeway "get busy", though I maintain that what happened in "Resolutions" stayed there. Regardless, i totally shipped them.
Also, I can see the memes if they'd chosen Susan Gibney... FLED 70,000 LIGHT YEARS TO ESCAPE GEORDI'S STALKING!

Probably it was uncomfortable or didn't resonated with the audience.
Most of the female roles had to put up with some sort of hellish outfit at some time.

@@GabePuratekuta yes look up that episode scientific method, the outfit was a brown version of the silver one she started off with, she only wore it in that one episode and never again.
