- Greg Furstenwerth was an early adopter of the Tesla Model S, but once the car was out of warranty he had a hard time getting the parts and service he needed. So he took on the repairs himself, and found it surprisingly easy. "If you can put together Legos you can put together a Tesla.”

Alpha_mac_omega you’re assuming the repair parts are readily available. Electronics usually require diagnostic equipment to determine what circuit board is bad. Then you have to get to it. Like he said, $1,000 for a tail light. But hey, what’s abnormal about that right?
I just can’t believe how much has broken on only a five year old car.
I was surprised about this too. That’s a lot of stuff to go out! I sorta expected more than this

its literally the first round of cars they ever made, back in late 2012 to 2013. their reliability was awful, and today, its extremely high. Palindromemordnilap well, most old cars (especially jdm) have very hard manuals to find too, can’t disagree about parts availability though, at least you can get a cheap used part with an old car.
you literally has to fix it by yourself or go to Tesla, even Porsche do license to repair shop and training manual. and if you ever mod yours car they will refuse service, including stuff like their super charging station, unless you pay for a large reexam fee.
kirya312 yeah very old cars..this car is 5 years old... this company doesn’t want you to fix this car easily they want you to pay them.. they don’t want 3rd party competition. So yes it is shocking to find someone willing to work on their own Tesla bc I’m sure they are brainwashed by Tesla and warned that if they attempt to fix anything they could cause serious damage... they can play this card bc the tech is so new and complex.. but what they don’t tell you is that other than the battery the tech is the same as any other car.. only proved by this video.. wouldn’t be surprised to see other owners work on their car bc if the valuable info provided by this vid..

he bought it back when it was new and tesla had quality issues, of course it's gonna break a lot, I'm just surprised to see that even a startup company can pull this level of reliability on their first models, this is better than most jaguars and land rovers and they've been around for years! At least tesla makes some of the most reliable cars in the world nowadays.. not quite toyota or honda level... nothing is :P
Owner 2003 Camry LE. Only repairs, other than light bulbs, was a new fan belt (2019), and new water pump (2020). That’s it in 17 years, other than fluids and brake pads.
AccurateShooter I don’t think it’s about the maintenance because let’s be honest It will need maintenance and I’m sure things will break on Tesla’s or any EV I think it’s more about the environment. Very similar to Apple Support
I can relate. My cousins iPad needed repair after the warranty expired and it wouldn't charge any more and NO ONE wanted to work on it. So I just called apple and all they could do send a replacement that we had to pay for.
I mean, could they at least try to fix it? When a RAM chip, Power supply or whatever goes out on a PC you dont just say screw it and buy a new one!
Worse because you can sell your apple product to anyone.
You can only sell your Tesla back to Tesla themselves.
If you sell it any other way then they disable a heap of feature and stop all updates.

Also The older MacBooks are much easier to pull apart and enhance but they are now making it harder to do that - like making it harder now to remove/replace the RAM. It’s doable but harder now. GamingTV nope, it is illegal to refuse a warranty repair even if you know your customer took appart the product, you have to prove that the customer broke the device by taking it appart to void the warranty
What are you trying to say here? It's a company, so people shouldn't support their decision to not repair an out of warranty product for free? That's precisely the reason to support it, Tesla is a company that's out to make money, giving away free repairs for life because an owner lives a few miles away from the nearest authorised service center would send them broke. I wouldn't want to take my Tesla to a regular mechanic just like I wouldn't want to take any luxury vehicle to just any mechanic. Dude pays $60k for a car and expects there to be service centers on every corner? The guy is deluded.
Plus several for this guy. Right now, the big issue with owning an EV is that nothing is standardized, so finding a mechanic is hard. If Tesla wants to remain the EV big dog long term, they NEED to open things to independent repairs. And, frankly, they need to do it YESTERDAY! The legacy automakers will be happy to beat them to it and start dominating the market, otherwise.
Warranty gone, me mad. Me no show proof of asking Tesla for help. Me try fix Tesla now. Tesla say money, I say no. Me still work on car.

Cyborg Please it’s the same thing in this case, so nyah
Actually it has nothing to do with early adoption. The fact that you wont even recieve courtsey from the manufactorer just because the warranty is expired is just appauling. Neither my two car brands would treat me like a peasant. However being tools like Apple, Tesla are very good at.
So you knew all the consequences? Really?
You knew:
Tesla doesn't even want to know you after warranty?

ABSOLUTELY. The vast majority of my friends that were fooled into buying a Tesla have all either sold them at a massive loss or traded them in for a proper car.
I guess they might as well interview your local car shop.
He successfully hot wired a Tesla. Okay, now that’s cool, and proves that people can easily steal a Tesla as long as they disable the GPS.
Welcome to the world of early adoption. And if you feel like you're "on an island" - IT'S BECAUSE YOU LITERALLY ARE!
buying a $100k first gen car then complain about how unreliable it is! The parts that he listed sounds super reasonable to be! I mean 1.5k for an LED headlight is a deal compared to a Bimmer or Lexus!
I don't get the fascination with Tesla or cars in general, especially at today's prices. The bottom line is you need a car to get you from A to B, to get to work or to pick up a few things. Today if you do a little research and exercise a little patience, you can buy a decent low mile car in the $5,000 range. This car or that car may be fun to drive or make you feel good for a while to own it, but when the thrill is gone you still spent maybe $100,000 for that thrill. I've been around for over 70 years now, and I can tell you that these people are wasting their money in a monumental way. My advise in the beginning is to work hard, save BIG, spend as little as humanly possible. Try to save enough to retire at 40, I'm not saying to actually retire at 40 but to be in a position to be ABLE to. Trust me I've been there and done that, I don't care how successful you are at the moment, that can all change in a heartbeat. DON'T BE A SUCKER TheReaper!
I've done exactly that. Never had a new car in my life. Paid cash for everything except my first home. My father told me the same thing I followed his advice now I'm 41 and retire in 10 years or so.

This dude ever owned a gasoline car before? Electric is the same........they break down.........you either buy a new one, pay to fix your old one, or fix it yourself. 134,000 miles isn't a new car anymore.
Except that with an electric car, everything is disposable. Either that or if something doesn't work, the whole car breaks down because they're all interconnected. Combustion engines can still run and replacing a single part is cheaper even if it includes labor, because you don't have to replace the whole system.
@@jsiszero Still does not change the expectation that after an average of 100,000 miles your car may and probably will begin to break down. Thank you though for your input.
Watch Rich Rebuilds and you will find out what he is talking about. My Ford has 162, 000 miles on it and ita cheap to repair so is my Acura. Tesla door handles fail often and cost over 1000 dollar's, you can spend thousands on basic repairs
At least any other cars could be taken to any nearby mechanic to get them fixed, saving you time and more convenient.
Andrew Gillespie this guy is stupid
So, basically Tesla's are not reliable. How can a window regulator go bad/malfunction? LOL My Japanese car is 20 yrs old and still has the original factory installed regulator which has not failed.
Maybe sitting on an island in the salt air? Not garaged?
Theres a lot going on here
Window regulators are one of the most common failures as a car ages...
@@kungfoochicken08
Never heard of that before. I had another previous Japanese car, Nissan Altima I think.. and it had 380,000 KM on it.. and still had the original factory installed window regulator.
@@Nexus-7.0 My girlfriend had a 2006 Lexus with 280,000KM on it. Three of her window regulators have gone out already, and one switch. Her factory radio went out. The switch that locks the doors was busted. And the only door whose regulator didn't go out had the window switch go out on it. Electrical components failing isn't something unique to Tesla. Luxury cars are especially prone to having overly complicated electronic components that end up failing. The target demographic for luxury cars is someone who is only going to own the car for 140,000KM at most, so they design them to last about that long.
@@kungfoochicken08
It seems cars in the 90s were built to last. And I forgot to mention that both of my Japanese cars were from the 90s. Yes, you are right about the electronics-complexity. German cars are the worst at it.. I heard lol
Legend has it the car is still in millions of pieces.
It seems a lot like this guy just got a lemon of a car, this is an extreme amount of repairs he had to do, which just doesn’t seem like you would need for a Tesla.
Never be afraid to tear things apart. Great job and thanks for sharing.
Wow a man fixing his own car! Never done before! What a mAd LaD!
"That's your problem and you need to pay to have it fixed"
Does this guy not understand that he's out of warranty. That's how it works with literally any car.
Bobdingle25 you can take any other car to a million different garages and get it repaired. They don’t even need to by main dealers. You can buy manuals and parts easily on line and also buy cheaper pattern parts. With a Tesla, they won’t supplier non Tesla main dealers with parts, thy won’t provide manuals of technical help and they won’t supply diagnostics. The warranty is not the issue, it is Tesla’s refusal to slow owners or other garages to repair a Tesla.
Early adopters should be respected
Surprised a lot of dumb people in the comments don’t realize this is a right-to-repair claim against Tesla, not just a story about his warranty expiring.
Grand Admiral Thrawn yeah that’s what I’m saying and I agree with you. What I mean is that the comments are full of naive people saying “I don’t see the issue, the warranty on my car expired years ago and yet nobody is making a video about it”, not realizing that’s not the point of this video, the point is to protest against Tesla for not giving the right to repair to people.
Either way they are breaking a law.
If they sell dirrectly to the consumer it's illegal.cause car manfucatures aren't legally allowed to sell dirrectly to consumers.
If they refuse to let poeple repair their vehicles then they are in violation of the right to repair.
Tesla is not a spare parts company, like Ford, GM, and Chrysler. Tesla's primary focus is the sale of new cars. They are constantly growing, so their priority is understandably on making parts available for new vehicles to sell. Each year, the Tesla Model S outsells multiple direct competitors combined. So, yeah... It is probably a bit easier to get a door handle for a Lexus LS, AUDI A8, or BMW 7-Series as a spare part. Will it cost less at retail?
@Grand Admiral Thrawn -- The others' primary business is the sale of spare parts. Tesla's primary business is selling complete cars. Therein lies the difference.
@@redxsage well said.
I think I'll stick with toyota.
bonsai J here here😀
True
Lame af
Same Toyota and Honda all the way my ae86 with my Atlantic 4age and supercharger has never let me down
pan af haha best description of a Lexus lol
This guy is like the white "Rich Rebuilds".
Lol facts
Kudos for the DIY attitude. But he bought a preorder product which is pretty much a beta release, lives on an island, drove it all over the place till warranty expired, and the product he got may be simple to work on but does not fall into the realm of your average mechanics expertise. Idk what anyone would expect but that's awesome he found other parts and that stuff is becoming available.
No way! You bought a niche market car and it turns out it’s expensive to have fixed. That’s crazy!
CNbc must be shorting Tesla big time
Haha
They run like an hour off Tesla content a day, virtually all of it is negative. It's hilarious. The banks could destroy the economy (again) and we'd still know more about Tesla's car seats than how what kind of scams Wall Street is running. SMH.
I love it. Lets keeping shorting the company more. #TeamShort 😂
CNBC must be a pedo guy
Dusty Lemieux thought I was the only one looking at it from that POV😂😂😂 always thinking about stocks
Cool aid drinker.
My 20-year old Ford Excursion diesel is still chugging along nicely, thank you. 😁
You are awesome 👏🏻 a true human being! Bless you!
$14,000 worth of repairs over 100,000 miles...
*”RELIABLE”*
Will Ferland Miata gang 👌🏼 my 92 is at 198,000 and has never left me stranded
Lol insane! Saved a ton of money by not need gas but needs 14k in repairs for parts that probably caused as much waste as production of making the fuel to run a normal car 😆
@@danielnoble5608 silly silly. TOYOTA LAND CRUISER GANG 350k miles and never broke down on me
My 2000 Chevy Siverado has 300k miles yet hasnt brken down yet
Exactly, this bs cars are priced at $80k and after 100k miles it does not function well anymore!!! What a super ripoff this is. I would rather buy a house😊.
So he repairs his own car?.... wowwwww that's amazing. Can't wait to see the story on the guy that mows his lawn.
Watch the video. Parts are NOT easy to obtain for these things
and?
WheatSnackBread The fact of the matter is this guy worked on a 1st model tesla, that had no repair manual, a new wiring/electronics within the car and really a new type of car to work on plus he has never worked on a car before. This is definitely more impressive then you actually make it out to be
Wonder what he'll do once the battery goes bad, I have heard that's 15kusd to change it.
A great humble guy....
If he was closer to @richrebuilds they could create a super power
Richy is way better. but Richy is a black dude. so I guess that's why they skipped him and went with the white dude who basically didn't do anything special
Rich has bubble gum and a butter knife. 😂😂
Rich is awesome! They should have interviewed him
@@Famekom lmfao yeah rich rebuilt a swapped. This guy just doing maintenance
Rich made people believe that Tesla DIY is doable
Everyone in awe of this guy must not know about RichRebuilds -_- my dude made a running Tesla out of other broken Tesla’s 😭😭😭
Erm...Tesla should hire this guy because he seems extremely intelligent.
Someone needs to build a totally open source electric car that can be put together like Legos as you said
That a really great idea
biggest PROBLEM is.....you don’t own your Tesla! if you get in a small crash that gives your car a salvage title (very easy and fast to obtain because of Tesla’s crazy expensive repairs costs) they won’t service your car anymore, you don’t get updates anymore and they disable the car from the super charging system. Same if you move out of the country and want to take your Tesla with you. They don’t even give you warranty services anymore. And yes, I have experienced all this with my Model X. VERY disappointed I had to sell my car at the end because it would have been unusable...
Two words explains Tesla. Planned Obsolescence and Money Pits.
They just do what Apple is doing in the consumer product industry...
i read about one guy who got his whole drivetrain replaced as if it was under warranty. He had purchased a salvage car and brought it into the shop and either they didn't catch that it was a salvage title, or something else, who knows. What's crazier is that the drivetrain wasn't under warranty anyways. He basically got a ton of free work done... salvage title voided his warranty in the first place. teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/tesla-salvage-rebuilt-title-dissapointment.112246/
Open a Tesla Auto Mechanic Center and you'll be sued in a second!!
He needs to start his own TH-cam channel about common Tesla problems and how to fix those problems!!!
Tesla needs to hire this genius!
