I hope Better Bike is listening to your feedback. I am currently planning a world bike tour. Was thinking of doing it with a regular ebike towing a trailer with a solar panel. But then I saw the PEBL and was like hmmm. 🤔 I wonder if a PEBL could make a cross country trip loaded for touring.
9:44 "stop doing that" should be: "well done son, that gives the video some identity as well shows how creative mij son is. Keep up the good work, son. I'm proud of you for being yourself and helping me to get more viewers and make the video's more attractive, as long as you don't do it to much: keep on going." Greetings from The Netherlands 🇳🇱, Europe🇪🇺 By the way: ThanX for your video's. Like your info a lot.
Eric, your videos are so honest and detailed, and such good ideas about improvements and safety. So glad you made another video, I was starting to worry that something had happened. BetterBike needs to put you on retainer as a consultant, your input is really so informative.
Faith E. Gaskin thanks! I probably need a referral code just for the series as people have told me they ordered due to it but really no way for better bike to track that
I owe Eric a big thanks for sparking a modification idea that has helped my rear hub issues a lot. OT used the 8 speed internal geared SRAM hub on older models. Mine self destructed not once but twice in 4 years, 3,600 miles. The main issue is internal geared hubs are not meant for tandem( long shift cable run) use. They start to fail to shift accurately then the two internal planetary gears start failing so you can't possibly adjust the cable to get all gears. Then they grind and pop into scrap metal. Erik suggested the 5 speed hub would be adequate, possibly better because the indexing travel is greater between gears. I looked into this and decided to have my local bike shop build a heavy duty rear wheel/hub using the Sturmey Archer 5 speed internal hub with ONE larger more durable planetary gear. $770 later I have a 2 inch wide double walled super duty wheel, extra strong spokes, 2.8 inch tire and a hub that shifts every time. Sturmey Archer also uses a heavier axle and bearing set so I'm very happy with performance, I actually coast faster down hills. PEBL owners should feel fortunate Sturmey Archer was chosen as the OEM.
Popeye, I'm glad that worked for you. When my 8spd self-destructs, I'm likely to do the same thing. I currently get gears 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8. And since the 2nd gear only sometimes works, I feel like my '5-speed' isn't really working awesome... particularly since the gears I have is 1, 3, 3.5, 4.5, and 5. Not really optimal. When my rear wheel got loose earlier this year, I had my LBS build my wheel with 12-guage spokes instead of the 13s that Better.Bike used from the factory. They're VERY beefy and should do me proud for a long time. The great rims I have is the only reason they think my wheel didn't blow up completely.
Yes, these builders buy pre-spoked wheels from wholesalers who swear the tension is right but I can tell you many customers end up with broken spokes and problems. There is no substitute for having a good local bike shop resource.
Would be interesting to know your experience with the SA 5 speed. I tried one on a bicycle (rotary shift) including winter snow conditions, and it failed. 3 issues basically: 1st is that the old SA 5 speeds had 2 shift cables, one push and one pull, and they now went to 1 pull, with the result that the internal planetary gears may not end up exactly where they are supposed to be, and that partial engagement and “nibbling” is destructive to the gears. I could only access 4 of the 5 gears, no matter how much I fiddled with the adjustments. 2nd issue is that one of the three bearing sets has only a simple dust cover over it, the bearings are visible to the eye just looking at it, and so there is no protection there from water - snow - mud invasion into the bearings. 3rd issue is that it’s a factory pre greased hub, it doesn’t run in an oil bath, and so you can’t lubricate it, the only thing that can be done is to fully disassemble and re grease, and unless you have experience with assembling Swiss watches or something you won’t have the knowledge or tools to do it. A good old Derailleur system seems to me would be better, such as on the DryCycle...?
@@PRH123 Single cable can work well for indexing with a good design. SA is heavier than some but not a top end product. Derailleurs would be worse in mud.
Hi if i paid the cash you have , and the front was cracking i would definitely want the company to fix it under warranty; now saying that, a simply put a longer length of aluminium across the front, and as you said with perhaps a bit of old tyre in there as a bit of suspension , just try a simple mudflap , it looks good not sure if its better than a elf , what do you think with hindsight would you buy an elf with the solar panel .
Thanks for posting Eric. As I understand it, off-road is for the faster speed. They mark it as off road so they can circumvent the legal rules of the road. I'm really happy you keep posting, you are one of the main reasons I bought my bike. They should be giving you some freebies. :)
The federal law for power and top speeds apply to public and park bike trails. Let's assume off road means private roads, logging roads or MTB tracks on recreational lands(wink, wink).
Honestly they need all the help they can get if you ask me. Before I purchase one I want to make sure they hammer out all of the bugs. Before I even consider spending ten Grand on something like this.
Excellent information, in Coos Bay, Oregon, collecting information, and am closer to buying a PEBL soon.w/ all your insight brings one closer to the decision. thanks.
Fender add-ons are no big deal, ELF owners have used scraps of plastic or rubber, bleach bottle plastic or even aluminum sheet painted to match. It's one of those simple projects you can experiment with. I used white vinyl roof gutter, shaped with the aid of a heat gun, Durable and matches my white body paint. I even used that gutter, upside down, to make a really sharp looking rear fender.
I thought about using rubber, but am unsure as to how to mount it. There's very little clearance since I have the larger tires - if there was more clearance, it'd be a piece of cake.
Nothing wrong with trying duct tape fastening to determine the best shape, then when you are ready drop the wheel and rivet or use small nuts and bolts. But I wonder if you do a sharp turn of the wheels, you get enough room. Also could let air out of tires, easier than removing wheels.
I agree with your thoughts on this thing especially since you may have put into it like around 10 grand something you put that much money into should last a lot longer. I mean if you went out and bought a four-wheeler commercial classed four-wheeler I'm sure it would last you more than several years wear and tear. But six months for that much money it feels like a rip off.
Thanks for all of your videos. I had make the last payment and had to cancel because the state of Ohio change the rules for electric bike. Anything that a motor requires a driver license. I don't have a driver license because of my sight. Thanks again. Best wishes.
I was chatting with a dude on line talking about this pebble and he said that that was still worth it as he was replacing this thing with an actual car. Because it was still cheaper than a regular vehicle sure if you had the license it that would be something some money. But for the most part you never have to oil the same you never have to fill it with gasoline it just takes electricity.
I found a neat safety accessory that really improves night visibility from the sides of my ELF - wheel rim reflector kits. Each kit has enough curved reflective tape to treat 4 wheels. Really shows up in headlights! I used white with my white ELF but they sell custom reflective colors too. Amazon.
Popeye Gordon yes the green strips on the wheels of my PEBL are those retro-reflective strips. I show putting them on and results in Great PEBL 6 I think
One other request can you post on how to change the tires and general maintenance with adjusting the handle bars and what to tighten up as you ride. Thanks again!
If you want substantially extend the battery life, use the big one and charge it to 80%. Most of the wear on these batteries occurs above 4v per cell. You can easily double the number of charges by only charging it to 80% or under 4V per cell. You are killing your battery leaving it sit fully charged.
I just spoke with Fredrick today over email and he said a couple of new things regarding shipping. My PEBL would be shipped directly to my house and the driver is responsible for unloading it. He also stated that the would send a video on how to hook the batteries up. My guess is they are shipping the batteries outside the PEBL instead of them under the seat like yours were. The video will also include instructions for installing the mirrors. I will keep you updated on what I hear.
Installing the batteries are a piece of cake. They just slide in under the seat and the plug only goes one way so no way to mess that up. As to the shipping, it's my understanding that they've been shipping the batteries attached to the floor of the crate for a while - so they wouldn't have to revisit what happened to mine. Mirrors are simple to install as well with just a few allen bolts to tighten. Enjoy! That's exciting that it'll be shipping soon

Question about your concern putting wear and tear on the Pebl by frequently putting long rides on it, say every week. What about it wouldn’t last? I’m looking at an e-trike solution for in and near town rides within a 20 mile radius. Do you think it wouldn’t last 5-10 years? I watched the frst half dozen or so of your videos and found them very instructive; but their hill climbing pre-1000 or 1500 Watt upgrade left me looking for other sources. Now Pebl might be back in the running.
MrBiggles53 mine being one of the first PEBLs with weaker frame design and a lack of experience on the side of the team at Better.bike has me concerned about the longevity of my PEBL. For a bike with less than 500 miles and no crashes it’s got some rattles and has had some repair needs that have been above what I expected. I don’t doubt that a new PEBL purchase would be much more durable having had the benefit of nearly 100 delivered before will be far better an investment. The new on/off road 750/1500 watt switch should really assist in hill climbing too
Mr B - did you know 3 ELFs have been used for 4000 mile cross-continental trips? One was a 75 year old woman who wrote a book about it, one was a young Canadian who went to Key West and made a movie about it that can be viewed here on TH-cam, one is still going. At least one ELF I am aware of has 60,000 miles on it. Stuff does break but there is no $5000 motor or $3000 transmission to blow up like on a car. No doubt someone may soon be or or is already on a long trip in a PEBL. That test is part of the source for design improvements.
The new ones are low-Voc fiberglass so way more durable if not as eco-friendly. The hemp body just wasn’t quite durable enough I think. Think it unlikely the new ones would have this issue
Hey dude got some advise so the battery won't run out get a solar panel but not to big connect it to the battery that way you can recharge and environmental friendly but don't let overheat because that can happen
Jesse- a solar panel can not be too 'big', it can not "overheat" anything because all correct solar panel installations include a charge controller that prevents overcharging. It would be an amateur blunder to not include a charge controller to protect the battery.
Peter P. They’ve essentially fixed this! New bodies have separate front piece and side pieces so the weight of the body is no longer resting on this part.

Eric, I just ordered my very PEBL!! I am order 103. The automatic email said 5-7 months so we will see. You can subscribe to my channel for updates when I receive my PEBL. It snows here in Iowa and I got one with a heater in it. So I'll be posting riding videos in the snow once winter comes.
Popeye Gordon Ordered in June it takes 7 months to ship check this update out on my channel. They have started building my body so it shouldn’t be much longer. th-cam.com/video/EtmOOynir3M/w-d-xo.html
Brian Foster according to Kevin from Better.Bike the intention is the 750-watt on road setting is for legally riding on roads or paths. The 1500 watt setting would be when on private land or off paths and roads where legal. If mine had this setting I’d reserve it for hill climbing only
Legally, yes. But better.bike may have discovered a loophole that stands up to legal challenges at least in some states. Time will tell. How many cops even know about the federal 750 watt limit, let alone the fact that one new maker out of 1000 e-bike makers is including an overdrive switch?
Drivers license???? 750 runs cooler. Put a mud-flap on it. You should build up front repair now thicker with carbon. Buy a yard of 11oz twill/ebay. Don’t use fglass. Do mods,, U can make plugs from bondo wood and pull mold from.
Pushyhog my thought is that driving with a vehicle on-road that’s over the e-bike limit could get you in trouble without a valid drivers license. If you were going under 20 and obviously under pedal power I doubt the authorities would look at you twice. Repair-wise I’m going to reach out to Kevin and see what he suggests. Also curious to see if this is happening to others or if maybe mine has a defect.
Body cracks appear on older ELFs in a few particular locations. Eric is wise to work with the factory on the best fix for this. A reinforcing plate between the frame and body shell would be invisible if done right. If removing all that glued on liner is too hard, some thick glue inside and a couple small stainless cap nuts on the outside might work. Or camouflage your reinforcement by making a front bumper that also helps reinforce the shell and fasten tight to the mounting points. I saw a nice front bumper made from aluminum diamond plate with a balsa wood core. A metal shop can whip one up for you.

Awesome! Congrats on getting on the list. I'll be curious as to the changes they make to the PEBL prior to yours getting shipped.
Eric Fischnaller I’ll post up some details on the new changes on how everything works and preforms.
@@jdrum3053 What happened? 6 months later, still no PEBL video on your channel.
Popeye Gordon

They have started building my body so it shouldn’t be much longer.

Just bolt on a car mudflap and trim it to shape 'as i said before it should be fixed by the manufacturer ' they are stress cracks.
Doesn't that mean you have to register the vehicle, if it has a 1500w motor?
Brian Foster according to Kevin from Better.Bike the intention is the 750-watt on road setting is for legally riding on roads or paths. The 1500 watt setting would be when on private land or off paths and roads where legal. If mine had this setting I’d reserve it for hill climbing only
Legally, yes. But better.bike may have discovered a loophole that stands up to legal challenges at least in some states. Time will tell. How many cops even know about the federal 750 watt limit, let alone the fact that one new maker out of 1000 e-bike makers is including an overdrive switch?
Where did you buy it at
Jean Billy you can buy online at better.bike website.
En Argentina no hay este tipo de veiculo
I suffered 4 brain strokes
More pebl.
Just throw on a peice of plastic or rubber and rivet it on the wheel well
como ago para comprar uno
Hi i really want one but ebikes are not legal in new york but they should be
chris gleason yeah, I’ve heard that too bad too. It’s a good way to lessen traffic congestion
Chris - that law was changed in April of 2018. Now legal.
IS LOOK NICE BUT THERE ASKING TO MUSH MONEY BASE LIKE BUYING CAR O MOTORBIKE I LIKE TO BUY I CALL BUT THERE ASKING $8,000 TO MUSH
