Solar Powered E-Bike (Trike) Designed to Reduce City Traffic

  • The Veemo is an incredible fully enclosed electric assist bicycle with an 80 Watt solar panel on the roof to trickle charge the battery. It was designed by VeloMetro to be a shareable vehicle in Vancouver and eventually in cities around the world.
    The idea is that people can rent these e-bikes and use them as an extension of the public transportation system in a given city. The electric assist makes it possible for people with different fitness levels to use the bike, and to get around the city without breaking a sweat or getting wet if it's raining.
    This ebike can go up to 30 km/hour and the battery gives it a range of 100km. To operate these electric bikes as a fleet, but without having expensive infrastructure, VeloMetro plans to have a battery swap system with a truck packed with charged batteries who will go around and swap out batteries that are low on power.
    Kody Baker from VeloMetro thinks these bikes (Velomobiles) will help cities make a modal shift towards getting people out of single occupant cars and into active transportation.
    The positive impacts of a modal shift would mean fewer cars on the road, less noise and air pollution, more space for bike lanes, and a healthier population.
    Veemo even has shocks, power windows and locks, and space behind the seat for groceries or luggage.
    To stay up to date with the Veemo project, check out their website and follow them on social media:

    What an awesome project! I bought an ebike a few months ago but I'm scared to use it in busier areas where motorists can be unpleasantly aggressive towards cyclists (or just not that aware of them). I'm also not that stable (due to some health issues) so a tricycle structure is a bonus. This vehicle is more visible and seems more assertive on the road than a regular bike. I like it a lot and hope the concept is a success so that it can spread to more cities around the world.

      My thoughts exactly! everyone cant afford a drivers license or cant do the theory for medical reasons thus we're stuck to a bike in the snow, rain and cold, struggling to get our bags home. This would solve all of that. But is the price right, I ask..?

    I'm from windsor ontario and there is a huge stereotype behind ebikes. living in the Motor City if you buy a solar powered / electric vehicle you're telling your friends, family, ect. you don't care about their jobs. but we need to find a compromise, we need to have reliable level entry vehicles, vehicles that are designed for your shorter commutes to work, school the store ect. I can't wait for this to be available, and more business like this one to be accessible. To force larger car companies to rethink how they market and sell to cities. love this idea.

      I live in Chatham-Kent and there's a similar mindset here. Fortunately I live in the country and my travelling is on long country roads with occasional city visits.
      I've often biked Windsor and London and find it enjoyable for the most part with a few difficult areas. City infrastructures need to be a little more accommodating for cyclists in general.
      London has progressed a little further than Windsor.
      Chatham is dismal. People ride on the sidewalks because there is no safe alternative.

      @@kokopelli314 Hi! I'm in the north of England. I can only afford to ride a bike these days, but I don't ride on pavements. Not ever. My late mum was knocked down by a lycra-clad cretin riding on the pavement. He very bravely ran away, leaving her in a heap. She was 74 and very frail. Her wrist was badly broken when she hit the ground. She never quite recovered from it.
      When I'm a pedestrian I make myself as wide as possible when I see a cyclist riding towards me. I respond to pavement cyclists with EXTREME prejudice. I trained in jiu-jitsu for 26 years, so Johnny-f*ckwit courier will find out that I'm not the pushover my mum was.
      If riding on the roads isn't safe, bikers should get off the road and bloody-well walk. Driving on the roads isn't safe, either, but people would soon complain if nervous motorists and motorbike riders took to using the pavements.

    I think these are going to be very popular , especially in places with Sunshine and Towns that are just 5-10 km in diameter where cycling is doable, viable and when it is raining and these protect from getting wet …….so much cheaper than a Car for short trips .
    I read on the net that in the UK 2/3 of car trips are those where the driver is the only occupant and over 1/2 of our trips are less than 5 km !
    This makes these little modes of transport attractive .

      Alright smart guy. Think before you speak and do your research on frikin velomobiles. First of all, velomobiles are made of fibre glass or carbon fibre, which is light, strong, and yet expensive. These allow for a farther extend of molding into an aerodynamic which covers the FULL trike. This allows you to pedal faster than this even without a motor. Ayyyy, looks like you didn't do your research. Yikes. And let me tell you something: if you have a car, I can guarantee you spent at least $1000 if you have had it for a good amount of time. Now let's bring reality in. You have to pay for gas, insurance, registration, and maintanence. And if you bought cheap, your maintanence will be high. Within a year, your yearly cost will jump from $1000 to at the very least, $3000. Now, $2000 a year atleast for all that bs on cars, you'd be past $11,000 spent on a cheap car in just five years. Look at that!!! In five years, the velomobile only needs the basic velomobile maintanence. So let's say the velomobile was $6000 and you kept it well, you'd spend about $100-$200 in a year. Five years= $500-$1000. So that brings you in at about under $7000. And that was a $1000 cheap shatter box car. Most people get $10,000 or more today. That makes it more expensive! Cmon bro, think about it.

    Hi there, I have owned the Quest and Rotovello semi closed trikes. They were great but E - motors and permanent roofs are a big step ahead. Also the Quest and Rotovello are quite low so their visibility profile is inferior to your higher covered bike. You are easily up with the ELF in terms of all round practicality. Factors to bear in mind are side winds and bike width for cycle lane safety. I note, ELF have open sides for wind mitigation so something to think about. ( I think ELF should have suspension so an opportunity for you to improve there). You have really ticked a lot of boxes with this clever trike. See my old Web site "Planet Pride in the South Pacific" for more on my background. Cheers.

      In the Netherlands we have fully enclosed recumbent bikes where you can drive in (when a bit used to driving it) up to 60 kilometers per hour without any assistance.
      There are also a wide variety of enclosed and not enclosed bikes available here. Not new at all, others are doing it already on larger scale (like 1500 bikes+ a month scale). You might get a better picture about it at en.ligfiets.net/ although most of it is in dutch.

    Things like this are great over flat ground, but I live at the confluence of 5 rivers in south-western Ohio. A 10 mile trip across town means going down into town and back up the other side. A 450 watt ebike with a 240w/hr battery could just barely make it. I think you're gonna need more power.

    Maybe one day they'll be affordable enough to replace the second car. I can see these working in major cities like NYC, Chicago, Boston. I could even see cities in other countries reducing the number of car lanes and forcing people to look for something like this as a greener option.
    But electric cars are only becoming more popular and within a few decades solar/wind plus electric cars will keep these sidelines as expensive toys or novelties.

      The ELF is $8,950 base price and is still consistently back ordered 3 to 5 months due to demand. ELF weighs 160 pounds so it can really be pedaled but this Veemo design is so heavy and expensive it is not practical and will not succeed.

    • @popeyegordon
      @popeyegordon 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Veemo I wish you success but you have to admit that your gorgeous but somewhat over engineered vehicle weighs 100 pounds more than the ELF. I really don't want to be seen as a shill troll for them but it's like this, OT has sold 1000 units and they are years ahead in miles logged and rider feedback compared to competitors. 5 million road miles, three 4000 mile cross continental trips covered in books, blogs and feature length movies. It remains to be seen if your targeted market will be happy with the cargo capacity and pedaling performance. This industry is wide open, I would be foolish to not admit that 10 years from now Veemo could be the global leader in this new industry. Or you can be a minor footnote. The design is so critical.

    • @bobamericana3099
      @bobamericana3099 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      your targeted market reeks of agenda 21 and agenda 30...you wish to entrap the population into rental..and rentals that would not allow said population to leave the city.
      trump and the USA has wrecked your targeted market so perhaps you should shift gears and markets and look at developing a product that is focused on individual ownership.

    • @YourMajesty143
      @YourMajesty143 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bobamericana3099 - Sigh, you conspiracy nuts are all over the place. Nobody is getting trapped, you think these ebikes and ecars are even hurting the gas-powered vehicle industry? They're barely profiting! Name one scooter, one golf cart, or electric car that is able to travel outside 100 miles. This issue isn't exclusive to this one company.That's just the nature of solar and electric design. Those have always been their limitations, but they're slowly improving as technology continues to advance. If these manufacturers could extend the distance of these vehicles and have enough consumer demand to sell them (rather than rent), trust me they'd do it. They'd be way more profitable. Stop watching news propaganda and go read a book or your brain will continue to rot.

    1. Transport 1-2 kids (or a kid and a lean adult) and 2 grocery bags.
    2. Travel in winter = battery works in minus degrees.
    3. Drive in a nordic climate with occasional but sometimes surprisingly strong gusts of wind while maintaining stability and safety on the road. Maybe the only way to do that is with sideways flexibility like Denmark's "Butchers and bicycles" have on their trikes? Don't know.
    4. Being able to lock it safely and leave some semi- valuables in the vehicle. Preferably out of plain sight.

      VeloMetro Mobility Inc You have a great target group in health- and environment- conscious, educated 30+ year old family-building Northerners (Europe, Scandinavia region plus a little south), who want to live healthy and save the world but also complete their daily tasks. Most of these people can not afford to get sweaty or wet on their way to work (it just won't fly) and can not afford a Tesla either 😊 Price and usability is key. Testdrive in Iceland. Been there. If your bikes can handle Iceland, they're up to anything! There are some bike clubs there. Check out the usual tourist sites and ask around. Icelanders are helpful folks and getting in contact with some real bike people should prove to be easy 😊 Best of luck to you, can't wait for the final product!

      Organic Transit sells a version with rear bench seat that holds 2 kids w/seat belts and still has room for 10 bags of groceries. The battery will always do better if you take it inside at night to charge. Leaving valuables in any vehicle is unwise in city environments. But OT does feature a locking trunk.

      Probably can't. Will have to find a similar product manufactured by a different company. These people are looking to build their business by having these fleets in cities everywhere. They are more service oriented rather than individual sales. They want to keep control of the quality and maintenance and be able to charge usage fees making them widely accessible and affordable for everyone. It's like a new form of public transportation. Like you wouldn't be able to purchase your own greyhound bus.

      the laws of many places are designed to keep out competition for ICE vehicles. This means laws prevent them from ridingo n bike lanes becaus ethey want to disourage safety of anyone using these. they ant you to drive an ICE car, the laws are drafted around monopolies paying politicians to ensure they are kept that way. so you can either walk, or drive ICE. bikes use road and get killed, or use sidewalk and get fined for breaking the law. tey wont allow 4 wheels in many places iether wihtout a license, becuase 3 whees is unstable, and unsafem, so they mandate safety to require ICE vehicle,. politicans dont care for safety, they care for money

There are plenty of other manufacturers making similar products. The bicycle cars in this video are part of a fleet. A ride sharing service. They are not planning on selling to individuals. You'd have to find an independent salesman of a different make.
